Tailoring the resonant spin response of a stirred polariton condensate

We report on the enhancement of the spin coherence time (T2) by almost an order-of-magnitude in exciton-polariton condensates through driven spin precession resonance. Using a rotating optical trap formed by a bichromatic laser excitation, we synchronize the trap stirring frequency with the condensate intrinsic Larmor precession, achieving an order of magnitude increase in spin coherence. By tuning the optical trap profile via excitation lasers intensity, we precisely control the resonance width. Here we present a theoretical model that explains our experimental findings in terms of the mutual synchronization of the condensate circular polarization components. Our findings underpin the potential of polariton condensates for spinoptronic devices and quantum technologies.

Directional planar antennae in polariton condensates

We report on the realization of all-optical planar microlensing for exciton-polariton condensates in semiconductor microcavities. We utilize spatial light modulators to structure a nonresonant pumping beam into a planoconcave lens-shape focused onto the microcavity plane. When pumped above condensation threshold, the system effectively becomes a directional polariton antenna, generating an intense focused beam of coherent polaritons away from the pump region. The effects of pump intensity, which regulates the interplay between gain and blueshift of polaritons, as well as the geometry of lens-shaped pump are studied and a strategy to optimize the focusing of the condensate is proposed. Our work underpins the feasibility to guide nonlinear light in microcavities using nonresonant excitation schemes, offering perspectives on optically reprogrammable on-chip polariton circuitry.

Optically driven spin precession in polariton condensates

External driving of spinor degrees of freedom by magnetic or optical fields in quantum systems underpin many applications ranging from nuclear magnetic resonance to coherent state control in quantum computing. Although spinor polariton condensates are offering a flexible platform for spinoptronic applications, strong inter-particle interactions limit their spin coherence. Here, we introduce an all-optically driven spin precession in microcavity polariton condensates that eliminates depolarisation, through a radio frequency modulation of a spatially rotating, asymmetric exciton reservoir that both confines, and actively replenishes the polariton condensate. We realise several GHz driven spin precession with a macroscopic spin coherence time that is limited only by the extraneous to the condensate, frequency drift of the composite pumping sources. Our observations are supported by mean field modelling and evidence a driven-dissipative quantum fluidic analogue of the nuclear magnetic resonance effect.

Exciton radiative lifetime in a monoatomic carbon chain

Linear carbon-based materials such as polyyne and cumulene oligomers provide a versatile platform for nano-physics and engineering. Direct gap quasi-1D polyyne structures are promising for the observation of strong and unusual excitonic eects arising due to the two-dimensional quantum connement. Recently, we reported on the observation of sharp exciton peaks in low temperature photoluminescence spectra of polyyne chains. Here, we analyse the time-resolved optical response of this system. We extend the non-local dielectric response theory to predict the exciton radiative lifetime dependence on the band-gap value and on the length of the chain. A good agreement between the experiment and the theory is achieved.

Engineering photon statistics in a spinor polariton condensate

We implement full polarization tomography on the photon correlations in a spinor exciton-polariton condensate. Our measurements reveal condensate pseudospin mean-field dynamics spanning from stochastic switching between linear polarization components, limit cycles, and stable fixed points, and their intrinsic relation to the condensate photon statistics. We optically harness the cavity birefringence, polariton interactions, and the optical orientation of the photoexcited exciton background to engineer photon statistics with precise control. Our results demonstrate a smooth transition from a highly coherent to a super-thermal state of the condensate polarization components.

Optical orientation, polarization pinning, and depolarization dynamics in optically confined polariton condensates

We investigate the optical orientation, polarization pinning, and depolarization of optically confined semiconductor exciton-polariton condensates. We perform a complete mapping of the condensate polarization as a function of incident nonresonant excitation polarization and power. We utilize a ring-shaped excitation pattern to generate an exciton-induced potential that spatially confines polariton condensates into a single mode. We observe that formation of circular polarization in the condensate persists even for a weakly cocircularly polarized pump. By varying the excitation ring diameter we realize a transition from the condensate polarization being pinned along the coordinate-dependent cavity-strain axes, to a regime of zero degree of condensate polarization. Analysis through the driven-dissipative stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation reveals that this depolarization stems from a competition between sample induced in-plane polarization splitting and the condensate-reservoir overlap. An increase in the role of the latter results in weakening of the condensate fixed-point phase space attractors, and enhanced random phase space walk and appearance of limit cycle trajectories, reducing the degree of time-integrated polarization.

Excitonic fine structure in emission of linear carbon chains

We studied monoatomic linear carbon chains stabilised by gold nanoparticles attached to their ends and deposited on a solid substrate. We observe spectral features of straight chains containing from 8 to 24 atoms. Low temperature PL spectra reveal characteristic triplet fine-structures that repeat themselves for carbon chains of different lengths. The triplet is invariably composed of a sharp intense peak accompanied by two broader satellites situated 15 and 40 meV below the main peak. We interpret these resonances as an edge-state neutral exciton, positively and negatively charged trions, respectively. The time-resolved PL shows that the radiative lifetime of the observed quasiparticles is about 1 ns, and it increases with the increase of the length of the chain. At high temperatures a non-radiative exciton decay channel appears due to the thermal hopping of carriers between parallel carbon chains. Excitons in carbon chains possess large oscillator strengths and extremely low inhomogeneous broadenings.
