Systematic errors in partially-quenched QCD plus QED lattice simulations

At the precision reached in current lattice QCD calculations, electromagnetic effects are becoming numerically relevant. Here, electromagnetic effects are included by superimposing $\mathrm{U}(1)$ degrees of freedom on $N_f = 2+1$ QCD configurations from the Budapest-Marseille-Wuppertal Collaboration. We present preliminary results for the electromagnetic corrections to light pseudoscalars mesons masses and discuss some of the associated systematic errors.

Influence of static electric fields on an optical ion trap

We recently reported on a proof-of-principle experiment demonstrating optical trapping of an ion in a single-beam dipole trap superimposed by a static electric potential [Nat. Photonics 4, 772--775 (2010)]. Here, we first discuss the experimental procedures focussing on the influence and consequences of the static electric potential. These potentials can easily prevent successful optical trapping, if their configuration is not chosen carefully. Afterwards, we analyse the dipole trap experiments with different analytic models, in which different approximations are applied. According to these models the experimental results agree with recoil heating as the relevant heating effect. In addition, a Monte-Carlo simulation has been developed to refine the analysis. It reveals a large impact of the static electric potential on the dipole trap experiments in general. While it supports the results of the analytic models for the parameters used in the experiments, the analytic models cease their validity for significantly different parameters. Finally, we propose technical improvements for future realizations of experiments with optically trapped ions.

$m_c/m_s$ with Brillouin fermions

We present a calculation of the ratio of the charm quark mass to the strange quark mass. Using the Brillouin improved Wilson action, we are able to calculate this ratio in a single framework, using a relativistic fermionic action throughout. The calculation is carried out on selected ensembles of two flavor clover improved lattices produced by the QCDSF collaboration, allowing an extrapolation to the continuum, to infinite volume and to the physical pion mass.

Localization of cold atoms in state-dependent optical lattices via a Rabi pulse

We propose a novel realization of Anderson localization in non-equilibrium states of ultracold atoms trapped in state-dependent optical lattices. The disorder potential leading to localization is generated with a Rabi pulse transfering a fraction of the atoms into a different internal state for which tunneling between lattice sites is suppressed. Atoms with zero tunneling create a quantum superposition of different random potentials, localizing the mobile atoms. We investigate the dynamics of the mobile atoms after the Rabi pulse for non-interacting and weakly interacting bosons, and we show that the evolved wavefunction attains a quasi-stationary profile with exponentially decaying tails, characteristic of Anderson localization. The localization length is seen to increase with increasing disorder and interaction strength, oppositely to what is expected for equilibrium localization.

Gauge action improvement and smearing

The effect of repeatedly smearing SU(3) gauge configurations is investigated. Six gauge actions (Wilson, Symanzik, Iwasaki, DBW2, Beinlich-Karsch-Laermann, Langfeld; combined with a direct SU(3)-overrelaxation step) and three smearings (APE, HYP, EXP) are compared. The impact on large Wilson loops is monitored, confirming the signal-to-noise prediction by Lepage. The fat-link definition of the ``naive'' topological charge proves most useful on improved action ensembles.

Dissociation of Feshbach Molecules into Different Partial Waves

Ultracold molecules can be associated from ultracold atoms by ramping the magnetic field through a Feshbach resonance. A reverse ramp dissociates the molecules. Under suitable conditions, more than one outgoing partial wave can be populated. A theoretical model for this process is discussed here in detail. The model reveals the connection between the dissociation and the theory of multichannel scattering resonances. In particular, the decay rate, the branching ratio, and the relative phase between the partial waves can be predicted from theory or extracted from experiment. The results are applicable to our recent experiment in 87Rb, which has a d-wave shape resonance.

UV-filtered overlap fermions

We discuss the kernel spectrum, locality properties and the axial-vector renormalization constant of UV-filtered overlap fermions. We find that UV-filtered overlap fermions have a better conditioned kernel, better locality and an axial-vector renormalization constant closer to 1 than their unfiltered counterparts, even if the shift parameter $ρ$ is simply set to 1.

Feshbach Spectroscopy of a Shape Resonance

We present a new spectroscopy technique for studying cold-collision properties. The technique is based on the association and dissociation of ultracold molecules using a magnetically tunable Feshbach resonance. The energy and lifetime of a shape resonance are determined from a measurement of the dissociation rate. Additional spectroscopic information is obtained from the observation of a spatial interference pattern between an outgoing s wave and d wave. The experimental data agree well with the results from a new model, in which the dissociation process is connected to a scattering gedanken experiment, which is analyzed using a coupled-channels calculation.

Scaling tests with dynamical overlap and rooted staggered fermions

We present a scaling analysis in the 1-flavor Schwinger model with the full overlap and the rooted staggered determinant. In the latter case the chiral and continuum limit of the scalar condensate do not commute, while for overlap fermions they do. For the topological susceptibility a universal continuum limit is suggested, as is for the partition function and the Leutwyler-Smilga sum rule. In the heavy-quark force no difference is visible even at finite coupling. Finally, a direct comparison between the complete overlap and the rooted staggered determinant yields evidence that their ratio is constant up to $O(a^2)$ effects.

Staggered eigenvalue mimicry

We study the infrared part of the spectrum for UV-filtered staggered Dirac operators and compare them to the overlap counterpart. With sufficient filtering and at small enough lattice spacing the staggered spectra manage to ``mimic'' the overlap version. They show a 4-fold near-degeneracy, and a clear separation between would-be zero modes and non-zero modes. This suggests an approximate index theorem for filtered staggered fermions and a correct sensitivity to the topology of QCD. Moreover, it supports square-rooting the staggered determinant to obtain dynamical ensembles with $N_f=2$.

A comparative study of overlap and staggered fermions in the Schwinger model

We investigate the validity of the square rooting procedure of the staggered determinant in the context of the Schwinger model. We find some evidence that at fixed physical quark mass the square root of the staggered determinant becomes proportional to the overlap determinant in the continuum limit. We also find that at fixed lattice spacing moderate smearing dramatically improves the chiral behavior of staggered fermions.

Dissociation of ultracold molecules with Feshbach resonances

Ultracold molecules are associated from an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate by ramping a magnetic field across a Feshbach resonance. The reverse ramp dissociates the molecules. The kinetic energy released in the dissociation process is used to measure the widths of 4 Feshbach resonances in 87Rb. This method to determine the width works remarkably well for narrow resonances even in the presence of significant magnetic-field noise. In addition, a quasi-mono-energetic atomic wave is created by jumping the magnetic field across the Feshbach resonance.

Observation of molecules produced from a Bose-Einstein condensate

Molecules are created from a Bose-Einstein condensate of atomic 87Rb using a Feshbach resonance. A Stern-Gerlach field is applied, in order to spatially separate the molecules from the remaining atoms. For detection, the molecules are converted back into atoms, again using the Feshbach resonance. The measured position of the molecules yields their magnetic moment. This quantity strongly depends on the magnetic field, thus revealing an avoided crossing of two bound states at a field value slightly below the Feshbach resonance. This avoided crossing is exploited to trap the molecules in one dimension.

Staggered versus overlap fermions: a study in the Schwinger model with $N_f=0,1,2$

We study the scalar condensate and the topological susceptibility for a continuous range of quark masses in the Schwinger model with $N_f=0,1,2$ dynamical flavors, using both the overlap and the staggered discretization. At finite lattice spacing the differences between the two formulations become rather dramatic near the chiral limit, but they get severely reduced, at the coupling considered, after a few smearing steps.

The pion mass in finite volume

We determine the relative pion mass shift $M_π(L)/M_π-1$ due to the finite spatial extent $L$ of the box by means of two-flavor chiral perturbation theory and the one-particle Lüscher formula. We use as input the expression for the infinite volume $ππ$ forward scattering amplitude up to next-to-next-to-leading order and can therefore control the convergence of the chiral series. A comparison to the full leading order chiral expression for the pion mass in finite volume allows us to check the size of subleading terms in the large-$L$ expansion.

Characterization of elastic scattering near a Feshbach resonance in rubidium 87

The s-wave scattering length for elastic collisions between 87Rb atoms in the state |f,m_f>=|1,1> is measured in the vicinity of a Feshbach resonance near 1007 G. Experimentally, the scattering length is determined from the mean-field driven expansion of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a homogeneous magnetic field. The scattering length is measured as a function of the magnetic field and agrees with the theoretical expectation. The position and the width of the resonance are determined to be 1007.40 G and 0.20 G, respectively.

M_pi^2 versus m_q: comparing CP-PACS and UKQCD data to Chiral Perturbation Theory

I present a selection of CP-PACS and UKQCD data for the pseudo-Goldstone masses in $N_f=2$ QCD with doubly degenerate quarks. At least the more chiral points should be consistent with Chiral Perturbation Theory for the latter to be useful in an extrapolation to physical masses. I find consistency with the chiral prediction but no striking evidence for chiral logs. Nonetheless, the consistency guarantees that the original estimate, by Gasser and Leutwyler, of the $N_f=2$ QCD low-energy scale $Λ_3$ was not entirely wrong.
