Adaptive Quarklet Tree Approximation

This paper is concerned with near-optimal approximation of a given function $f \in L_2([0,1])$ with elements of a polynomially enriched wavelet frame, a so-called quarklet frame. Inspired by $hp$-approximation techniques of Binev, we use the underlying tree structure of the frame elements to derive an adaptive algorithm that, under standard assumptions concerning the local errors, can be used to create approximations with an error close to the best tree approximation error for a given cardinality. We support our findings by numerical experiments demonstrating that this approach can be used to achieve inverse-exponential convergence rates.

Anisotropic Besov regularity of parabolic PDEs

This paper is concerned with the regularity of solutions to parabolic evolution equations. Special attention is paid to the smoothness in the specific anisotropic scale $\ B^{r\mathbf{a}}_{τ,τ}, \ \frac{1}τ=\frac{r}{d}+\frac{1}{p}\ $ of Besov spaces where $\mathbf{a}$ measures the anisotropy. The regularity in these spaces determines the approximation order that can be achieved by fully space-time adaptive approximation schemes. In particular, we show that for the heat equation our results significantly improve previous results by Aimar and Gomez [3].

Quarklet Characterizations for Triebel-Lizorkin Spaces

In this paper we prove that under some conditions on the parameters the one-dimensional Triebel-Lizorkin spaces $ F^{s}_{r,q}(\mathbb{R}) $ can be described in terms of quarklets. So for functions from Triebel-Lizorkin spaces we obtain a quarkonial decomposition as well as a new equivalent quasi-norm. For that purpose we use quarklets that are constructed out of biorthogonal compactly supported Cohen-Daubechies-Feauveau spline wavelets, where the primal generator is a cardinal B-spline. Moreover we introduce some sequence spaces apposite to our quarklet system and study their properties. Finally we also obtain a quarklet characterization for the Triebel-Lizorkin-Morrey spaces $ \mathcal{E}^{s}_{u,r,q}(\mathbb{R}) $.

Regularity in Sobolev and Besov spaces for parabolic problems on domains of polyhedral type

This paper is concerned with the regularity of solutions to linear and nonlinear evolution equations extending our findings in [22] to domains of polyhedral type. In particular, we study the smoothness in the specific scale $B^r_{τ,τ}$, $\frac{1}τ=\frac rd+\frac 1p$ of Besov spaces. The regularity in these spaces determines the approximation order that can be achieved by adaptive and other nonlinear approximation schemes. We show that for all cases under consideration the Besov regularity is high enough to justify the use of adaptive algorithms.

Besov regularity of non-linear parabolic PDEs on non-convex polyhedral domains

This paper is concerned with the regularity of solutions to parabolic evolution equations. We consider semilinear problems on non-convex domains. Special attention is paid to the smoothness in the specific scale $B^r_{\tau,\tau}$, $\frac{1}{\tau}=\frac rd+ \frac 1p$ of Besov spaces. The regularity in these spaces determines the approximation order that can be achieved by adaptive and other nonlinear approximation schemes. We show that for all cases under consideration the Besov regularity is high enough to justify the use of adaptive algorithms. Our proofs are based on Schauder's fixed point theorem.

Properties of Kondratiev spaces

In this paper, we investigate Kondratiev spaces on domains of polyhedral type. In particular, we will be concerned with necessary and sufficient conditions for continuous and compact embeddings, and in addition we shall deal with pointwise multiplication in these spaces.

Besov regularity of parabolic and hyperbolic PDEs

This paper is concerned with the regularity of solutions to linear and nonlinear evolution equations on nonsmooth domains. In particular, we study the smoothness in the specific scale $\ B^r_{τ,τ}, \ \frac{1}τ=\frac{r}{d}+\frac{1}{p}\ $ of Besov spaces. The regularity in these spaces determines the approximation order that can be achieved by adaptive and other nonlinear approximation schemes. We show that for all cases under consideration the Besov regularity is high enough to justify the use of adaptive algorithms.

On the Atomic Decomposition of Coorbit Spaces with Non-Integrable Kernel

This paper ist concerned with recent progress in the context of coorbit space theory. Based on a square integrable group representation, the coorbit theory provides new families of associated smoothness spaces, where the smoothness of a function is measured by the decay of the associated voice transform. Moreover, by discretizing the representation, atomic decomposi- tions and Banach frames can be constructed. Usually, the whole machinery works well if the associated reproducing kernel is integrable with respect to a weighted Haar measure on the group. In recent studies, it has turned out that to some extent coorbit spaces can still be established if this condition is violated. In this paper, we clarify in which sense atomic decompositions and Banach frames for these generalized coorbit spaces can be obtained.

Adaptive wavelet BEM for boundary integral equations: Theory and numerical experiments

In this paper, we are concerned with the numerical treatment of boundary integral equations by means of the adaptive wavelet boundary element method (BEM). In particular, we consider the second kind Fredholm integral equation for the double layer potential operator on patchwise smooth manifolds contained in $\mathbb{R}^3$. The corresponding operator equations are treated by means of adaptive implementations that are in complete accordance with the underlying theory. The numerical experiments demonstrate that adaptive methods really pay off in this setting. The observed convergence rates fit together very well with the theoretical predictions that can be made on the basis of a systematic investigation of the Besov regularity of the exact solution. Keywords: Besov spaces, weighted Sobolev spaces, adaptive wavelet BEM, non-linear approximation, integral equations, double layer potential operator, regularity, manifolds.

Besov Regularity for the Stationary Navier-Stokes Equation on Bounded Lipschitz Domains

We use the scale $B^s_τ(L_τ(Ω))$, $1/τ=s/d+1/2$, $s>0$, to study the regularity of the stationary Stokes equation on bounded Lipschitz domains $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\geq 3$, with connected boundary. The regularity in these Besov spaces determines the order of convergence of nonlinear approximation schemes. Our proofs rely on a combination of weighted Sobolev estimates and wavelet characterizations of Besov spaces. By using Banach's fixed point theorem, we extend this analysis to the stationary Navier-Stokes equation with suitable Reynolds number and data, respectively.

Recent Progress in Shearlet Theory: Systematic Construction of Shearlet Dilation Groups, Characterization of Wavefront Sets, and New Embeddings

The class of generalized shearlet dilation groups has recently been developed to allow the unified treatment of various shearlet groups and associated shearlet transforms that had previously been studied on a case-by-case basis. We consider several aspects of these groups: First, their systematic construction from associative algebras, secondly, their suitability for the characterization of wavefront sets, and finally, the question of constructing embeddings into the symplectic group in a way that intertwines the quasi-regular representation with the metaplectic one. For all questions, it is possible to treat the full class of generalized shearlet groups in a comprehensive and unified way, thus generalizing known results to an infinity of new cases. Our presentation emphasizes the interplay between the algebraic structure underlying the construction of the shearlet dilation groups, the geometric properties of the dual action, and the analytic properties of the associated shearlet transforms.

The $α$-Modulation Transform: Admissibility, Coorbit Theory and Frames of Compactly Supported Functions

The $α$-modulation transform is a time-frequency transform generated by square-integrable representations of the affine Weyl-Heisenberg group modulo suitable subgroups. In this paper we prove new conditions that guarantee the admissibility of a given window function. We also show that the generalized coorbit theory can be applied to this setting, assuming specific regularity of the windows. This then yields canonical constructions of Banach frames and atomic decompositions in $α$-modulation spaces. In particular, we prove the existence of compactly supported (in time domain) vectors that are admissible and satisfy all conditions within the coorbit machinery, which considerably go beyond known results.

On the convergence analysis of the inexact linearly implicit Euler scheme for a class of SPDEs

This paper is concerned with the adaptive numerical treatment of stochastic partial differential equations. Our method of choice is Rothe's method. We use the implicit Euler scheme for the time discretization. Consequently, in each step, an elliptic equation with random right-hand side has to be solved. In practice, this cannot be performed exactly, so that efficient numerical methods are needed. Well-established adaptive wavelet or finite-element schemes, which are guaranteed to converge with optimal order, suggest themselves. We investigate how the errors corresponding to the adaptive spatial discretization propagate in time, and we show how in each time step the tolerances have to be chosen such that the resulting perturbed discretization scheme realizes the same order of convergence as the one with exact evaluations of the elliptic subproblems.

Besov regularity of solutions to the p-Poisson equation

In this paper, we study the regularity of solutions to the $p$-Poisson equation for all $1<p<\infty$. In particular, we are interested in smoothness estimates in the adaptivity scale $ B^\sigma_{\tau}(L_{\tau}(\Omega))$, $1/\tau = \sigma/d+1/p$, of Besov spaces. The regularity in this scale determines the order of approximation that can be achieved by adaptive and other nonlinear approximation methods. It turns out that, especially for solutions to $p$-Poisson equations with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions on bounded polygonal domains, the Besov regularity is significantly higher than the Sobolev regularity which justifies the use of adaptive algorithms. This type of results is obtained by combining local H\"older with global Sobolev estimates. In particular, we prove that intersections of locally weighted H\"older spaces and Sobolev spaces can be continuously embedded into the specific scale of Besov spaces we are interested in. The proof of this embedding result is based on wavelet characterizations of Besov spaces.

Coorbit spaces with voice in a Fréchet space

We set up a new general coorbit space theory for reproducing representations of a locally compact second countable group $G$ that are not necessarily irreducible nor integrable. Our basic assumption is that the kernel associated with the voice transform belongs to a Fréchet space $\mathcal T$ of functions on $G$, which generalizes the classical choice $\mathcal T=L_w^1(G)$. Our basic example is $ \mathcal T=\bigcap_{p\in(1,+\infty)} L^p(G)$, or a weighted versions of it. By means of this choice it is possible to treat, for instance, Paley-Wiener spaces and coorbit spaces related to Shannon wavelets and Schrödingerlets.

Besov regularity for operator equations on patchwise smooth manifolds

We study regularity properties of solutions to operator equations on patchwise smooth manifolds $\partial\Omega$ such as, e.g., boundaries of polyhedral domains $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^3$. Using suitable biorthogonal wavelet bases $\Psi$, we introduce a new class of Besov-type spaces $B_{\Psi,q}^\alpha(L_p(\partial \Omega))$ of functions $u\colon\partial\Omega\rightarrow\mathbb{C}$. Special attention is paid on the rate of convergence for best $n$-term wavelet approximation to functions in these scales since this determines the performance of adaptive numerical schemes. We show embeddings of (weighted) Sobolev spaces on $\partial\Omega$ into $B_{\Psi,\tau}^\alpha(L_\tau(\partial \Omega))$, $1/\tau=\alpha/2 + 1/2$, which lead us to regularity assertions for the equations under consideration. Finally, we apply our results to a boundary integral equation of the second kind which arises from the double layer ansatz for Dirichlet problems for Laplace's equation in $\Omega$.

Spatial Besov Regularity for Stochastic Partial Differential Equations on Lipschitz Domains

We use the scale of Besov spaces B^\alpha_{\tau,\tau}(O), \alpha>0, 1/\tau=\alpha/d+1/p, p fixed, to study the spatial regularity of the solutions of linear parabolic stochastic partial differential equations on bounded Lipschitz domains O\subset R^d. The Besov smoothness determines the order of convergence that can be achieved by nonlinear approximation schemes. The proofs are based on a combination of weighted Sobolev estimates and characterizations of Besov spaces by wavelet expansions.
