Coherent control of non-Markovian photon-resonator dynamics

We study the unitary time evolution of photons interacting with a dielectric resonator using coherent control pulses. We show that non-Markovianity of transient photon dynamics in the resonator subsystem may be controlled to within a photon-resonator transit time. In general, appropriate use of coherent pulses and choice of spatial subregion may be used to create and control a wide range of non-Markovian transient dynamics in photon resonator systems.

Quantification and Control of non-Markovian Evolution in Finite Quantum Systems via Feedback

We consider the unitary time evolution of continuous quantum mechanical systems confined to a cavity in contact with a finite bath of variable size. Measures for Markovianity for such finite system-bath configurations are developed in terms of Hilbert-Schmidt distances of time evolving wave packets. The relevant time scales are identified, which characterize pseudo-Markovian transient behavior, boundary scattering induced non-Markovian oscillations at intermediate times, and non-Markovian rephasing events at long time scales. It is shown how these time scales can be controlled by tunable parameters such as the bath size and the strength of the system-bath coupling.

Driven dipole oscillations and the lowest energy excitations of strongly interacting lattice bosons in a harmonic trap

We show that the analysis of the time evolution of the occupation of site and momentum modes of harmonically trapped lattice hard-core bosons, under driven dipole oscillations, allows one to determine the energy of the lowest one-particle excitations of the system in equilibrium. The analytic solution of a single particle in the absence of a lattice is used to identify which function of those time-dependent observables is best fit for the analysis, as well as to relate the dynamic response of the system to its single-particle spectrum. In the presence of the lattice and of multiple particles, a much richer and informative dynamical response is observed under the drive.

Non-equilibrium Approach to Thermodynamics using Jarzynski Equality and Diagonal Entropy

We combine the formalisms of diagonal entropy and Jarzynski Equality to study the thermodynamic properties of closed quantum systems. Applying this approach to a quantum harmonic oscillator, the diagonal entropy offers a notion of temperature for closed systems away from equilibrium, and allows computing free-energy profiles. We also apply this approach to a hard-core boson lattice model, and discuss measures how to estimate temperature, entropy and measure work distribution functions. This technique offers a path to investigate the non-equilibrium quantum dynamics by means of performing work in a series of quenches.

Crossover physics in the non-equilibrium dynamics of quenched quantum impurity systems

A general framework is proposed to tackle analytically local quantum quenches in integrable impurity systems, combining a mapping onto a boundary problem with the form factor approach to boundary-condition-changing operators introduced in Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 4370 (1998). We discuss how to compute exactly two central quantities of interest: the Loschmidt echo and the distribution of the work done during the quantum quench. Our results display an interesting crossover physics characterized by the energy scale T_b of the impurity corresponding to the Kondo temperature. We discuss in detail the non-interacting case as a paradigm and benchmark for more complicated integrable impurity models, and check our results using numerical methods.

Non-Markovian Equilibration Controlled by Symmetry Breaking

We study the effects of symmetry breaking on non-Markovian dynamics in various system-bath arrangements. It is shown that by breaking certain symmetries features signaling non-Markovian time evolution disappear within a finite time t_{g}. We demonstrate numerically that the scaling of t_{g} with the symmetry breaking strength is different for various types of symmetry. We provide a mathematical explanation for these differences related to the spectrum of the total system-bath Hamiltonian and provide arguments that the scaling properties of t_{g} should be universal.

Possible Nematic Order Driven by Magnetic Fluctuations in Iron Pnictides

In this paper, instabilities of the isotropic metallic phase in iron pnictides are investigated. The relevant quartic fermionic interaction terms in the model are identified using phase space arguments. Using the functional integral formalism, a Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation is used to decouple these quartic terms. This procedure introduces several bosonic fields which describe the low-energy collective modes of the system. By studying the behavior of these collective modes, a possible instability is found in the forward scattering channel of the isotropic phase driven by magnetic fluctuations. Using mean field analysis, we obtain a static and homogeneous ground state. This ground state is metallic, but the electron Fermi pockets are distorted unequally at different pockets in momentum space. This results in a desirable nematic ordering which breaks the lattice C4 symmetry but preserves translational symmetry and may explain several experimental observations.

Scalable universal holonomic quantum computation realized with an adiabatic quantum data bus and potential implementation using superconducting flux qubits

In this paper we examine the use of an adiabatic quantum data transfer protocol to build a universal quantum computer. Single qubit gates are realized by using a bus protocol to transfer qubits of information down a spin chain with a unitary twist. This twist arises from altered couplings on the chain corresponding to unitary rotations performed on one region of the chain. We show how a controlled NOT gate can be realized by using a control qubit with Ising type coupling. The method discussed here can be extended to non-adiabatic quantum bus protocols. We also examine the potential of realizing such a quantum computer by using superconducting flux qubits.

Bond Disorder in Even-Leg Heisenberg Ladders

Random bond disorder in antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladders is investigated using the Stochastic Series Expansion Quantum Monte Carlo method. We find that the effects of individual bond impurities vary strongly, depending on their position on legs and rungs. We initially focus on how the distribution of local bond energies depends on the impurity concentration. Then we study how the phase diagram of even-leg ladders is affected by random bond doping. We observe Bose glass phases in two regimes ($h' < h \lesssim h_{c1}$ and $h" < h <h_{c2}$) and a Bose-Einstein Condensate in-between. Their presence are discussed in the relation to the local bond energies.

Fast realization of a spatially correlated percolation model

We propose two schemes to achieve fast realizations of spatially correlated percolation models. The schemes are shown to be efficient in complementary regimes of correlation phase space. They are combined with a generalized Newman-Ziff algorithm to numerically determine the percolation thresholds of two-dimensional lattices in the presence of correlations. It is found that the spatial correlations affect only a relatively small part of phase space.

Equilibration times in clean and noisy systems

We study the equilibration dynamics of closed finite quantum systems and address the question of the time needed for the system to equilibrate. In particular we focus on the scaling of the equilibration time T_{\mathrm{eq}} with the system size L . For clean systems we give general arguments predicting T_{\mathrm{eq}}=O(L^{0}) for clustering initial states, while for small quenches around a critical point we find T_{\mathrm{eq}}=O(L^ζ) where ζis the dynamical critical exponent. We then analyze noisy systems where exponentially large time scales are known to exist. Specifically we consider the tight-binding model with diagonal impurities and give numerical evidence that in this case T_{\mathrm{eq}}\sim Be^{CL^ψ} where B,C, ψare observable dependent constants. Finally, we consider another noisy system whose evolution dynamics is randomly sampled from a circular unitary ensemble. Here, we are able to prove analytically that T_{\mathrm{eq}}=O(1), thus showing that noise alone is not sufficient for slow equilibration dynamics.

Quantum Hall States in Graphene from Strain-Induced Nonuniform Magnetic Fields

We examine strain-induced quantized Landau levels in graphene. Specifically, arc-bend strains are found to cause nonuniform pseudomagnetic fields. Using an effective Dirac model which describes the low-energy physics around the nodal points, we show that several of the key qualitative properties of graphene in a strain-induced pseudomagnetic field are different compared to the case of an externally applied physical magnetic field. We discuss how using different strain strengths allows us to spatially separate the two components of the pseudospinor on the different sublattices of graphene. These results are checked against a tight-binding calculation on the graphene honeycomb lattice, which is found to exhibit all the features described. Furthermore, we find that introducing a Hubbard repulsion on the mean-field level induces a measurable polarization difference between the A and the B sublattices, which provides an independent experimental test of the theory presented here.

Excitonic Instabilities and Insulating States in Bilayer Graphene

The competing ground states of bilayer graphene are studied by applying renormalization group techniques to a bilayer honeycomb lattice with nearest neighbor hopping. In the absence of interactions, the Fermi surface of this model at half-filling consists of two nodal points with momenta $\mathbf{K}$, $\mathbf{K}'$, where the conduction band and valence band touch each other, yielding a semi-metal. Since near these two points the energy dispersion is quadratic with perfect particle-hole symmetry, excitonic instabilities are inevitable if inter-band interactions are present. Using a perturbative renormalization group analysis up to the one-loop level, we find different competing ordered ground states, including ferromagnetism, superconductivity, spin and charge density wave states with ordering vector $\mathbf{Q}=\mathbf{K}-\mathbf{K}'$, and excitonic insulator states. In addition, two states with valley symmetry breaking are found in the excitonic insulating and ferromagnetic phases. This analysis strongly suggests that the ground state of bilayer graphene should be gapped, and with the exception of superconductivity, all other possible ground states are insulating.

Using the J1-J2 Quantum Spin Chain as an Adiabatic Quantum Data Bus

This paper investigates numerically a phenomenon which can be used to transport a single q-bit down a J1-J2 Heisenberg spin chain using a quantum adiabatic process. The motivation for investigating such processes comes from the idea that this method of transport could potentially be used as a means of sending data to various parts of a quantum computer made of artificial spins, and that this method could take advantage of the easily prepared ground state at the so called Majumdar-Ghosh point. We examine several annealing protocols for this process and find similar result for all of them. The annealing process works well up to a critical frustration threshold.

Demonstration of Jarzynski's Equality in Open Quantum Systems Using a Step-Wise Pulling Protocol

We present a generalization of Jarzynski's Equality, applicable to quantum systems, relating discretized mechanical work and free-energy changes. The theory is based on a step-wise pulling protocol. We find that work distribution functions can be constructed from fluctuations of a reaction coordinate along a reaction pathway in the step-wise pulling protocol. We also propose two sets of equations to determine the two possible optimal pathways that provide the most significant contributions to free-energy changes. We find that the transitions along these most optimal pathways, satisfying both sets of equations, follow the principle of detailed balance. We then test the theory by explicitly computing the free-energy changes for a one-dimensional quantum harmonic oscillator. This approach suggests a feasible way of measuring the fluctuations to experimentally test Jarzynski's Equality in many-body systems, such as Bose-Einstein condensates.

Correlations in Quantum Spin Ladders with Site and Bond Dilution

We investigate the effects of quenched disorder, in the form of site and bond dilution, on the physics of the $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on even-leg ladders. Site dilution is found to prune rung singlets and thus create localized moments which interact via a random, unfrustrated network of effective couplings, realizing a random-exchange Heisenberg model (REHM) in one spatial dimension. This system exhibits a power-law diverging correlation length as the temperature decreases. Contrary to previous claims, we observe that the scaling exponent is non-universal, i.e., doping dependent. This finding can be explained by the discrete nature of the values taken by the effective exchange couplings in the doped ladder. Bond dilution on even-leg ladders leads to a more complex evolution with doping of correlations, which are weakly enhanced in 2-leg ladders, and are even suppressed for low dilution in the case of 4-leg and 6-leg ladders. We clarify the different aspects of correlation enhancement and suppression due to bond dilution by isolating the contributions of rung-bond dilution and leg-bond dilution.

Entanglement and its evolution after a quench in the presence of an energy current

We study the Ising spin chain with a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction focusing on the static and dynamic properties of the entanglement entropy, following a quantum quench. We show that the effects of the additional anisotropic interaction on the phase diagram and on the dynamics of the system are captured by the properties of the entanglement entropy. In particular, the model provides a way to study the quench dynamics in a system with an energy current. We consider quenches starting from an initial excited state of the Ising spin chain, and we analyze the effects of different initial conditions.

Bose glass and Mott glass of quasiparticles in a doped quantum magnet

The low-temperature states of bosonic fluids exhibit fundamental quantum effects at the macroscopic scale: the best-known examples are Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) and superfluidity, which have been tested experimentally in a variety of different systems. When bosons are interacting, disorder can destroy condensation leading to a so-called Bose glass. This phase has been very elusive to experiments due to the absence of any broken symmetry and of a finite energy gap in the spectrum. Here we report the observation of a Bose glass of field-induced magnetic quasiparticles in a doped quantum magnet (Br-doped dichloro-tetrakis-thiourea-Nickel, DTN). The physics of DTN in a magnetic field is equivalent to that of a lattice gas of bosons in the grand-canonical ensemble; Br-doping introduces disorder in the hoppings and interaction strengths, leading to localization of the bosons into a Bose glass down to zero field, where it acquires the nature of an incompressible Mott glass. The transition from the Bose glass (corresponding to a gapless spin liquid) to the BEC (corresponding to a magnetically ordered phase) is marked by a novel, universal exponent governing the scaling on the critical temperature with the applied field, in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions. Our study represents the first, quantitative account of the universal features of disordered bosons in the grand-canonical ensemble.
