Optimization of large homogeneous air Cherenkov arrays and application to the design of a 1TeV-100TeV gamma-ray observatory

At the time large air Cherenkov arrays are being discussed for future gamma-ray observatories, we review the relationship between the targeted capabilities and the main design parameters taking into account construction costs. As an example application, we describe a telescope array optimized for observations between 1 TeV and a few 100 TeV and use detailed simulations to estimate its performances in comparison to science objectives.

Experimental approaches for 100 TeV gamma-ray astronomy

The high energy end of gamma-ray source spectra might provide important clues regarding the nature of the processes involved in gamma-ray emission. Several galactic sources with hard emission spectra extending up to more than 30TeV have already been reported. Measurements around 100TeV and above should be an important goal for the next generation of high energy gamma-ray astronomy experiments. Here we present several techniques providing the required exposure (100 km^2.h). We focus our study on three Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Technique (IACT) based approaches: low elevation observations, large field of view telescopes, and large telescope arrays. We comment on the advantages and disadvantages of each approach and report simulation based estimates of their energy ranges and sensitivities.

Toward Ultra Short Gamma Ray Burst Ground Based Detection, SGARFACE status

We present the status and motivation of the Short GAmma Ray Front Air Cherenkov Experiment (SGARFACE) which will be operated parallel to standard Very High Energy gamma-ray observations using the Whipple 10m telescope. SGARFACE is sensitive to 100MeV-10GeV gamma-ray bursts with durations ranging from 100ns to 100us providing a fluence sensitivity as low as few $\rm 1E-9 erg/cm^2. Preliminary data taking started in November 2002.
