Spin texture of generic helical edge states

We study the spin texture of a generic helical liquid, the edge modes of a two-dimensional topological insulator with broken axial spin-symmetry. By considering honeycomb and square lattice realizations of topological insulators, we show that in all cases the generic behavior of a momentum-dependent rotation of the spin quantization axis is realized. Here we establish this mechanism also for disk geometries with continuous rotational symmetry. Finally, we demonstrate that the rotation of spin-quantization axis remains intact for arbitrary geometries, i.e. in the absence of any continuous symmetry. We also calculate the dependence of this rotation on the model and material parameters. Finally we propose a spectroscopy measurement which should directly reveal the rotation of the spin-quantization axis of the helical edge states.

Quantum paramagnet in a $π$ flux triangular lattice Hubbard model

We propose the $π$ flux triangular lattice Hubbard model ($π$-THM) as a prototypical setup to stabilize magnetically disordered quantum states of matter in the presence of charge fluctuations. The quantum paramagnetic domain of the $π$-THM which we identify for intermediate Hubbard U is framed by a Dirac semi-metal for weak coupling and by 120${}^{\circ}$ Néel order for strong coupling. Generalizing the Klein duality from spin Hamiltonians to tight-binding models, the $π$-THM maps to a Hubbard model which corresponds to the $(J_H, J_K)=(-1,2)$ Heisenberg-Kitaev model in its strong coupling limit. The $π$-THM provides a promising microscopic testing ground for exotic finite-U spin liquid ground states amenable to numerical investigation.

Entanglement analysis of isotropic spin-1 chains

We investigate entanglement spectra of the SO(3) bilinear-biquadratic spin-1 chain, a model with phases exhibiting spontaneous symmetry breaking (both translation and spin rotation), points of enlarged symmetry, and a symmetry-protected topological phase (the Haldane phase). Our analysis reveals how these hallmark features are manifested in the entanglement spectra, and highlights the versatility of entanglement spectra as a tool to study one-dimensional quantum systems via small finite size realisations.

Spin-resolved entanglement spectroscopy of critical spin chains and Luttinger liquids

Quantum critical chains are well described and understood by virtue of conformal field theory. Still the meaning of the real space entanglement spectrum -- the eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix -- of such systems remains in general elusive, even when there is an additional quantum number available such as spin or particle number. In this paper we explore in details the properties and the structure of the reduced density matrix of critical XXZ spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chains. We investigate the quantum/thermal correspondence between the reduced density matrix of a $T=0$ pure quantum state and the thermal density matrix of an effective entanglement Hamiltonian. Using large scale DMRG and QMC simulations, we investigate the conformal structure of the spectra, the entanglement Hamiltonian and temperature. We then introduce the notion of spin-resolved entanglement entropies which display interesting scaling features.

Rashba spin orbit coupling in the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model

Spin-orbit (SO) coupling is the crucial parameter to drive topological insulating phases in electronic band models. In particular, the generic emergence of SO coupling involves the Rashba term which fully breaks the SU(2) spin symmetry. As soon as interactions are taken into account, however, many theoretical studies have to content themselves with the analysis of a simplified U(1) conserving SO term without Rashba coupling. We intend to fill this gap by studying the Kane-Mele-Hubbard (KMH) model in the presence of Rashba SO coupling and present the first systematic analysis of the effect of Rashba SO coupling in a correlated two-dimensional topological insulator. We apply the variational cluster approach (VCA) to determine the interacting phase diagram by computing local density of states, magnetization, single particle spectral function, and edge states. Preceded by a detailed VCA analysis of the KMH model in the presence of U(1) conserving SO coupling, we find that the additional Rashba SO coupling drives new electronic phases such as a metallic regime and a direct-gap only topological insulating phase which persist in the presence of interactions.

Spiral order in the honeycomb iridate Li2IrO3

The honeycomb iridates A2IrO3 (A=Na, Li) constitute promising candidate materials to realize the Heisenberg-Kitaev model (HKM) in nature, hosting unconventional magnetic as well as spin liquid phases. Recent experiments suggest, however, that Li2IrO3 exhibits a magnetically ordered state of incommensurate spiral type which has not been identified in the HKM. We show that these findings can be understood in the context of an extended Heisenberg-Kitaev scenario satisfying all tentative experimental evidence: (i) the maximum of the magnetic susceptibility is located inside the first Brillouin zone, (ii) the Curie-Weiss temperature is negative relating to dominant antiferromagnetic fluctuations, and (iii) significant second-neighbor spin-exchange is involved.

Fluctuations and Entanglement spectrum in quantum Hall states

The measurement of quantum entanglement in many-body systems remains challenging. One experimentally relevant fact about quantum entanglement is that in systems whose degrees of freedom map to free fermions with conserved total particle number, exact relations hold relating the Full Counting Statistics associated with the bipartite charge fluctuations and the sequence of R\' enyi entropies. We draw a correspondence between the bipartite charge fluctuations and the entanglement spectrum, mediated by the R\' enyi entropies. In the case of the integer quantum Hall effect, we show that it is possible to reproduce the generic features of the entanglement spectrum from a measurement of the second charge cumulant only. Additionally, asking whether it is possible to extend the free fermion result to the $ν=1/3$ fractional quantum Hall case, we provide numerical evidence that the answer is negative in general. We further address the problem of quantum Hall edge states described by a Luttinger liquid, and derive expressions for the spectral functions of the real space entanglement spectrum at a quantum point contact realized in a quantum Hall sample.

Dimensional crossover and cold-atom realization of topological Mott insulators

We propose a cold-atom setup which allows for a dimensional crossover from a two-dimensional quantum spin Hall insulating phase to a three-dimensional strong topological insulator by tuning the hopping between the layers. We further show that additional Hubbard onsite interactions can give rise to spin liquid-like phases: weak and strong topological Mott insulators. They represent the celebrated paradigm of a quantum state of matter which merely exists because of the interplay of the non-trivial topology of the band structure and strong interactions. While the theoretical understanding of this phase has remained elusive, our proposal shall help to shed some light on this exotic state of matter by paving the way for a controlled experimental investigation in optical lattices.

Giant magnetoresistance and perfect spin filter in silicene, germanene, and stanene

Silicene, germanene and stanene are two-dimensional topological insulators exhibiting helical edge states. We investigate global and local manipulations at the edges by exposing them to (i) a charge-density-wave order, (ii) a superconductor, (iii) an out-of-plane antiferromagnetic, and (iv) an in-plane antiferromagnetic field. We show that these perturbations affect the helical edge states in a different fashion. As a consequence one can realize quantum spin-Hall effect without edge states. In addition, these edge manipulations lead to very promising applications: a giant magnetoresistance and a perfect spin filter. We also investigate the effect of manipulations on a very few edge-sites of a topological insulator nanodisk.

Correlated Topological Phases and Exotic Magnetism with Ultracold Fermions

Motivated by the recent progress in engineering artificial non-Abelian gauge fields for ultracold fermions in optical lattices, we investigate the time-reversal-invariant Hofstadter-Hubbard model. We include an additional staggered lattice potential and an artificial Rashba--type spin-orbit coupling term available in experiment. Without interactions, the system can be either a (semi)-metal, a normal or a topological insulator, and we present the non-Abelian generalization of the Hofstadter butterfly. Using a combination of real-space dynamical mean-field theory (RDMFT), analytical arguments, and Monte-Carlo simulations we study the effect of strong on-site interactions. We determine the interacting phase diagram, and discuss a scenario of an interaction-induced transition from normal to topological insulator. At half-filling and large interactions, the system is described by a quantum spin Hamiltonian, which exhibits exotic magnetic order due to the interplay of Rashba--type spin-orbit coupling and the artificial time-reversal-invariant magnetic field term. We determine the magnetic phase diagram: both for the itinerant model using RDMFT and for the corresponding spin model in the classical limit using Monte-Carlo simulations.

Tunneling spectra simulation of interacting Majorana wires

Recent tunneling experiments on InSb hybrid superconductor-semiconductor devices have provided hope for a stabilization of Majorana edge modes in a spin-orbit quantum wire subject to a magnetic field and superconducting proximity effect. Connecting the experimental scenario with a microscopic description poses challenges of different kind, such as accounting for the effect of interactions on the tunneling properties of the wire. We develop a density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) analysis of the tunneling spectra of interacting Majorana chains, which we explicate for the Kitaev chain model. Our DMRG approach allows us to calculate the spectral function down to zero frequency, where we analyze how the Majorana zero-bias peak is affected by interactions. From the study of topological phase transitions between the topological and trivial superconducting phase in the wire, we argue that the bulk gap closure generically affects both the proximity peaks and the Majorana peak, which should be observable in the transport signal.

Time-Reversal-Invariant Hofstadter-Hubbard Model with Ultracold Fermions

We consider the time-reversal-invariant Hofstadter-Hubbard model which can be realized in cold atom experiments. In these experiments, an additional staggered potential and an artificial Rashba--type spin-orbit coupling are available. Without interactions, the system exhibits various phases such as topological and normal insulator, metal as well as semi--metal phases with two or even more Dirac cones. Using a combination of real-space dynamical mean-field theory and analytical techniques, we discuss the effect of on-site interactions and determine the corresponding phase diagram. In particular, we investigate the semi--metal to antiferromagnetic insulator transition and the stability of different topological insulator phases in the presence of strong interactions. We compute spectral functions which allow us to study the edge states of the strongly correlated topological phases.

Magnetic ordering phenomena of interacting quantum spin Hall models

The two-dimensional Hubbard model defined for topological band structures exhibiting a quantum spin Hall effect poses fundamental challenges in terms of phenomenological characterization and microscopic classification. In the limit of infinite coupling U at half filling, the spin model Hamiltonians resulting from a strong coupling expansion show various forms of magnetic ordering phenomena depending on the underlying spin-orbit coupling terms. We investigate the infinite U limit of the Kane-Mele Hubbard model with z-axis intrinsic spin-orbit coupling as well as its generalization to a generically multi-directional spin orbit term which has been claimed to account for the physical scenario in monolayer Na2IrO3. We find that the axial spin symmetry which is kept in the former but broken in the latter has a fundamental impact on the magnetic phase diagram as we vary the spin orbit coupling strength. While the Kane-Mele spin model shows a continuous evolution from conventional honeycomb Neel to XY antiferromagnetism which avoids the frustration imposed by the increased spin-orbit coupling, the multi-directional spin-orbit term induces a commensurate to incommensurate transition at intermediate coupling strength, and yields a complex spiral state with a 72 site unit cell in the limit of infinite spin-orbit coupling. From our findings, we conjecture that in the case of broken axial spin symmetry there is a large propensity for an additional phase at sufficiently large spin-orbit coupling and intermediate U.

Inelastic electron backscattering in a generic helical edge channel

We evaluate the low-temperature conductance of a weakly interacting one-dimensional helical liquid without axial spin symmetry. The lack of that symmetry allows for inelastic backscattering of a single electron, accompanied by forward-scattering of another. This joint effect of weak interactions and potential scattering off impurities results in a temperature-dependent deviation from the quantized conductance, $δG \propto T^4$. In addition, $δG$ is sensitive to the position of the Fermi level. We determine numerically the parameters entering our generic model for the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang Hamiltonian of a HgTe/CdTe quantum well in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling.

Quantum Spin Hall Insulators with Interactions and Lattice Anisotropy

We investigate the interplay between spin-orbit coupling and electron-electron interactions on the honeycomb lattice combining the cellular dynamical mean-field theory and its real space extension with analytical approaches. We provide a thorough analysis of the phase diagram and temperature effects at weak spin-orbit coupling. We systematically discuss the stability of the quantum spin Hall phase toward interactions and lattice anisotropy resulting in the plaquette-honeycomb model. We also show the evolution of the helical edge states characteristic of quantum spin Hall insulators as a function of Hubbard interaction and anisotropy. At very weak spin-orbit coupling and intermediate electron-electron interactions, we substantiate the existence of a quantum spin liquid phase.

Detecting Quantum Critical Points using Bipartite Fluctuations

We show that the concept of bipartite fluctuations F provides a very efficient tool to detect quantum phase transitions in strongly correlated systems. Using state of the art numerical techniques complemented with analytical arguments, we investigate paradigmatic examples for both quantum spins and bosons. As compared to the von Neumann entanglement entropy, we observe that F allows to find quantum critical points with a much better accuracy in one dimension. We further demonstrate that F can be successfully applied to the detection of quantum criticality in higher dimensions with no prior knowledge of the universality class of the transition. Promising approaches to experimentally access fluctuations are discussed for quantum antiferromagnets and cold gases.

A family of spin-S chain representations of SU(2)_k Wess-Zumino-Witten models

We investigate a family of spin-S chain Hamiltonians recently introduced by one of us. For S=1/2, it corresponds to the Haldane-Shastry model. For general spin S, we find indication that the low-energy theory of these spin chains is described by the SU(2)_k Wess-Zumino-Witten model with coupling k=2S. In particular, we investigate the S=1 model whose ground state is given by a Pfaffian for even number of sites N. We reconcile aspects of the spectrum of the Hamiltonian for arbitrary N with trial states obtained by Schwinger projection of two Haldane-Shastry chains.

Bipartite Fluctuations as a Probe of Many-Body Entanglement

We investigate in detail the behavior of the bipartite fluctuations of particle number $\hat{N}$ and spin $\hat{S}^z$ in many-body quantum systems, focusing on systems where such U(1) charges are both conserved and fluctuate within subsystems due to exchange of charges between subsystems. We propose that the bipartite fluctuations are an effective tool for studying many-body physics, particularly its entanglement properties, in the same way that noise and Full Counting Statistics have been used in mesoscopic transport and cold atomic gases. For systems that can be mapped to a problem of non-interacting fermions we show that the fluctuations and higher-order cumulants fully encode the information needed to determine the entanglement entropy as well as the full entanglement spectrum through the Rényi entropies. In this connection we derive a simple formula that explicitly relates the eigenvalues of the reduced density matrix to the Rényi entropies of integer order for any finite density matrix. In other systems, particularly in one dimension, the fluctuations are in many ways similar but not equivalent to the entanglement entropy. Fluctuations are tractable analytically, computable numerically in both density matrix renormalization group and quantum Monte Carlo calculations, and in principle accessible in condensed matter and cold atom experiments. In the context of quantum point contacts, measurement of the second charge cumulant showing a logarithmic dependence on time would constitute a strong indication of many-body entanglement.
