Programmable cavity QED with a fiber-integrated atomic array

Strong atom-photon interactions in optical cavities are a key resource for quantum information processing, quantum networking, and the exploration of quantum optical effects. Optical tweezer arrays offer scalable, site-resolved control of neutral atoms, but their integration with high-cooperativity cavity QED systems remains challenging. Here we combine a twelve-site $^{87}$Rb optical tweezer array with a high-cooperativity fiber Fabry-P\'erot microcavity. The array is positioned within the cavity mode and individual sites are controlled with subwavelength precision, enabling continuous tuning of the single-atom coupling strength via deterministic displacement through the standing-wave field. For up to five atoms coupled to the cavity, we measure collectively enhanced vacuum Rabi splitting and implement cavity-based non-destructive readout of the number of coupled atoms. These results establish a scalable architecture for cavity-mediated entanglement generation and many-body cavity QED with single-atom control, and they lay the foundation for fiber-integrated quantum network nodes.

Quantisation and its breakdown in a Hubbard-Thouless pump

Geometric properties of waves and wave functions can explain the appearance of integer-valued observables throughout physics. For example, these 'topological' invariants describe the plateaux observed in the quantised Hall effect and the pumped charge in its dynamic analogon, the Thouless pump. However, the presence of interparticle interactions can profoundly affect the topology of a material, invalidating the idealised formulation in terms of Bloch waves. Despite pioneering experiments in solid state systems, photonic waveguides, and optical lattices, the study of topological insulators under variation of inter-particle interactions has proven challenging. Here, we experimentally realise a topological Thouless pump with tuneable Hubbard interactions in an optical lattice and observe regimes with robust pumping, as well as an interaction-induced breakdown. We confirm the pump's robustness against interactions that are smaller than the protecting gap, which holds true for both repulsive and attractive Hubbard $U$. Furthermore, we identify that bound pairs of fermions are responsible for quantised transport at strongly attractive $U$, supported by measurements of pair fraction and adiabaticity. For strong repulsive interactions, on the contrary, topological pumping breaks down. Yet, we can reinstate quantised pumping by modifying the pump trajectory while starting from the same initial state. Our experiments pave the way for investigating interacting topological insulators, including edge effects and interaction-induced topological phases.

Compact Two-Dimensional Magneto-Optical Trap for Ultracold Atom Setups

We report on the design, implementation, and performance of a compact two-dimensional magneto-optical trap (2D MOT) for cesium. In a small-volume vacuum chamber, the setup uses cesium dispensers in close proximity to the trapping region of the 2D MOT and operates at low vapor pressures in the $10^{-9}$ torr range. We achieve a cold atom flux of $4 \times 10^8$ atoms/s that is comparable to the performance of more complex atomic sources. The setup is simple to construct and can be adapted to a broad range of atomic species.
