Perturbation of eigenvalues of matrix pencils and optimal assignment problem

We consider a matrix pencil whose coefficients depend on a positive parameter $ε$, and have asymptotic equivalents of the form $aε^A$ when $ε$ goes to zero, where the leading coefficient $a$ is complex, and the leading exponent $A$ is real. We show that the asymptotic equivalent of every eigenvalue of the pencil can be determined generically from the asymptotic equivalents of the coefficients of the pencil. The generic leading exponents of the eigenvalues are the "eigenvalues" of a min-plus matrix pencil. The leading coefficients of the eigenvalues are the eigenvalues of auxiliary matrix pencils, constructed from certain optimal assignment problems.

Max-plus convex sets and functions

We consider convex sets and functions over idempotent semifields, like the max-plus semifield. We show that if $K$ is a conditionally complete idempotent semifield, with completion $\bar{K}$, a convex function $K^n\to\bar{K}$ which is lower semi-continuous in the order topology is the upper hull of supporting functions defined as residuated differences of affine functions. This result is proved using a separation theorem for closed convex subsets of $K^n$, which extends earlier results of Zimmermann, Samborski, and Shpiz.

Reachability problems for products of matrices in semirings

We consider the following matrix reachability problem: given $r$ square matrices with entries in a semiring, is there a product of these matrices which attains a prescribed matrix? We define similarly the vector (resp. scalar) reachability problem, by requiring that the matrix product, acting by right multiplication on a prescribed row vector, gives another prescribed row vector (resp. when multiplied at left and right by prescribed row and column vectors, gives a prescribed scalar). We show that over any semiring, scalar reachability reduces to vector reachability which is equivalent to matrix reachability, and that for any of these problems, the specialization to any $r\geq 2$ is equivalent to the specialization to $r=2$. As an application of this result and of a theorem of Krob, we show that when $r=2$, the vector and matrix reachability problems are undecidable over the max-plus semiring $(Z\cup\{-\infty\},\max,+)$. We also show that the matrix, vector, and scalar reachability problems are decidable over semirings whose elements are ``positive'', like the tropical semiring $(N\cup\{+\infty\},\min,+)$.

Duality and separation theorems in idempotent semimodules

We consider subsemimodules and convex subsets of semimodules over semirings with an idempotent addition. We introduce a nonlinear projection on subsemimodules: the projection of a point is the maximal approximation from below of the point in the subsemimodule. We use this projection to separate a point from a convex set. We also show that the projection minimizes the analogue of Hilbert's projective metric. We develop more generally a theory of dual pairs for idempotent semimodules. We obtain as a corollary duality results between the row and column spaces of matrices with entries in idempotent semirings. We illustrate the results by showing polyhedra and half-spaces over the max-plus semiring.

The Perron-Frobenius Theorem for Homogeneous, Monotone Functions

If A is a nonnegative matrix whose associated directed graph is strongly connected, the Perron-Frobenius theorem asserts that A has an eigenvector in the positive cone, (R^+)^n. We associate a directed graph to any homogeneous, monotone function, f: (R^+)^n -> (R^+)^n, and show that if the graph is strongly connected then f has a (nonlinear) eigenvector in (R^+)^n. Several results in the literature emerge as corollaries. Our methods show that the Perron-Frobenius theorem is ``really'' about the boundedness of invariant subsets in the Hilbert projective metric. They lead to further existence results and open problems.

Rational semimodules over the max-plus semiring and geometric approach of discrete event systems

We introduce rational semimodules over semirings whose addition is idempotent, like the max-plus semiring, in order to extend the geometric approach of linear control to discrete event systems. We say that a subsemimodule of the free semimodule S^n over a semiring S is rational if it has a generating family that is a rational subset of S^n, S^n being thought of as a monoid under the entrywise product. We show that for various semirings of max-plus type whose elements are integers, rational semimodules are stable under the natural algebraic operations (union, product, direct and inverse image, intersection, projection, etc). We show that the reachable and observable spaces of max-plus linear dynamical systems are rational, and give various examples.

Spectral Theorem for Convex Monotone Homogeneous Maps, and Ergodic Control

We consider convex maps f:R^n -> R^n that are monotone (i.e., that preserve the product ordering of R^n), and nonexpansive for the sup-norm. This includes convex monotone maps that are additively homogeneous (i.e., that commute with the addition of constants). We show that the fixed point set of f, when it is non-empty, is isomorphic to a convex inf-subsemilattice of R^n, whose dimension is at most equal to the number of strongly connected components of a critical graph defined from the tangent affine maps of f. This yields in particular an uniqueness result for the bias vector of ergodic control problems. This generalizes results obtained previously by Lanery, Romanovsky, and Schweitzer and Federgruen, for ergodic control problems with finite state and action spaces, which correspond to the special case of piecewise affine maps f. We also show that the length of periodic orbits of f is bounded by the cyclicity of its critical graph, which implies that the possible orbit lengths of f are exactly the orders of elements of the symmetric group on n letters.
