Searching for Dust around Hyper Metal-Poor Stars

We examine the mid-infrared fluxes and spectral energy distributions for metal-poor stars with iron abundances [Fe/H] $\lesssim-5$, as well as two CEMP-no stars, to eliminate the possibility that their low metallicities are related to the depletion of elements onto dust grains in the formation of a debris disk. Six out of seven stars examined here show no mid-IR excess. These non-detections rule out many types of circumstellar disks, e.g. a warm debris disk ($T\!\le\!290$ K), or debris disks with inner radii $\le1$ AU, such as those associated with the chemically peculiar post-AGB spectroscopic binaries and RV Tau variables. However, we cannot rule out cooler debris disks, nor those with lower flux ratios to their host stars due to, e.g. a smaller disk mass, a larger inner disk radius, an absence of small grains, or even a multicomponent structure, as often found with the chemically peculiar Lambda Bootis stars. The only exception is HE0107-5240, for which a small mid-IR excess near 10 microns is detected at the 2-$σ$ level; if the excess is real and associated with this star, it may indicate the presence of (recent) dust-gas winnowing or a binary system.

Star Formation in Dwarf Galaxies of the Nearby Centaurus A Group

We present Halpha narrow-band imaging of 17 dwarf irregular galaxies (dIs) in the nearby Centaurus A Group. Although all large galaxies of the group have a current or recent enhanced star formation episode, the dIs have normal star formation rates and do not contain a larger fraction of dwarf starbursts than other nearby groups. Relative distances between dIs and larger galaxies of the group can be computed in 3D since most of them have now fairly accurately known distances. We find that the dI star formation rates do not depend on local environment, and in particular they do not show any correlation with the distance of the dI to the nearest large galaxy of the group. There is a clear morphology-density relation in the Centaurus A Group, similarly to the Sculptor and Local Groups, in the sense that dEs/dSphs tend to be at small distances from the more massive galaxies of the group, while dIs are on average at larger distances. We find four transition dwarfs in the Group, dwarfs that show characteristics of both dE/dSphs and dIs, and which contain cold gas but no current star formation. Interestingly the transition dwarfs have an average distance to the more massive galaxies which is intermediate between those of the dEs/dSphs and dIs, and which is quite large: 0.54 +- 0.31 Mpc. This large distance poses some difficulty for the most popular scenarios proposed for transforming a dI into a dE/dSph (ram-pressure with tidal stripping or galaxy harassment). If the observed transition dwarfs are indeed missing links between dIs and dE/dSphs, their relative isolation makes it less likely to have been produced by these mechanisms. We propose that an inhomogeneous IGM containing higher density clumps would be able to ram-pressure stripped the dIs at such large distances.

Probing Halos of Galaxies at Very Large Radii using Background QSOs

(ABRIDGED) Gaseous halos of nine nearby galaxies (with redshifts cz < 6000 km/s) were probed at large galactocentric radii using background quasars observed with HST GHRS and STIS. The projected quasar-galaxy separations range from 55 to 387 h^{-1}_{75} kpc. Lyαabsorption lines were successfully detected in the spectra of five quasars, at impact parameters of up to 170 h^{-1}_{75} kpc from the center of the nearby galaxy, and in each case at wavelengths consistent with the galaxy's redshift. Our observations include the lowest redshift Lyαlines detected to date. HI velocity fields were obtained at the VLA for three of the galaxies in our sample (and in one case was available from the literature), to derive their rotation curves. When comparing the inner rotation curves of the galaxies with the velocity at large radius provided by the Lyαline it is apparent that it is very difficult to explain the observed Lyαvelocity as due to gas in an extended rotating disk. In most cases one would need to invoke large warps in the outer gas disks and also thick gas disks in order to reconcile the observed velocities with the predicted ones. In light of these results we conclude that in a typical galaxy there is no longer detectable atomic gas corotating in an extended disk at radii > 35 α^{-1}, where α^{-1} is the stellar disk exponential scale-length. The cosmic web is the most likely origin for the detected Lyαlines.

HI Observations of the Local Group Dwarf WLM

We present Australia Telescope Compact Array mosaic HI imaging of the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy WLM. We find an integrated flux of 149 Jy km/s and a total HI mass of 3.2 x 10^7 solar masses. The major axis of the HI is aligned with the stellar component of the galaxy. The overall HI distribution is relatively smooth at our resolution and has a double peaked central core. One of these peaks is aligned with a region found to have extinction that is internal to WLM and we take this as possible evidence of a large molecular gas complex in the southern half of the galaxy. The other HI peak is in close proximity to the brightest HII regions. WLM's overall velocity field is consistent with rigid body rotation. A rotation curve is derived, and we find a total dynamical mass of 3.00 x 10^8 solar masses. We also performed a wide field search, 38 arcminutes in radius, for HI companions or evidence of recent interactions (e.g., tidal tails), and found no detections to an HI mass limit of M_HI > 8.4 x 10^5 solar masses.

The Complex Neutral Gas Dynamics Of The Dwarf Starburst Galaxy NGC 625

We present new multi-configuration HI aperture synthesis imaging of the nearby dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 625 obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. Total HI column density images show gas well-aligned with the optical major axis, and low-column density HI extending to > 6 optical scale lengths. The HI velocity field, on the other hand, is highly disturbed, with neutral gas at nearly all detected velocities within the central region. After considering various interpretations, we find that a blowout scenario most accurately describes the data. Since at our resolution we do not detect any large evacuated holes in the HI disk, we interpret this blowout to be the result of the extended (both spatially and temporally) star formation event which NGC 625 has undergone in the last 100 Myr. This is one of the clearest examples of HI outflow detected in a dwarf galaxy. We find no obvious external trigger for this extended star formation event. We detect strong radio continuum emission from the largest HII regions; comparing to our HST and ground-based H Alpha fluxes suggests either appreciable amounts of extinction toward the star formation regions, or the contribution of non-thermal sources to the radio continuum luminosity.

The Recent Evolution of the Dwarf Starburst Galaxy NGC 625 from Hubble Space Telescope Imaging

New HST/WFPC2 imaging of the dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 625 is presented. These data, 80% complete to V and I magnitudes of 26.0 and 25.3, respectively, allow us to study the recent star formation history of NGC 625. We derive a tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) distance modulus of 27.95+/-0.07, corresponding to a distance of 3.89+/-0.22 Mpc, and a location on the far side of the Sculptor Group. NGC 625 has a well-defined radial stellar population gradient, evidenced by a central concentration of young MS stars and an RGB/AGB ratio that increases with galactocentric distance. The prominent AGB is very red, and RGB stars are detected far from the central star forming regions. Using H Alpha and H Beta narrow band imaging and previous optical spectroscopy we identify substantial and varying internal extinction (A_V = 0.0 to 0.6 mag) associated with the central active star formation regions. To better understand the effects of internal extinction on the analysis of young stellar populations, synthetic models are presented which, for the first time, examine and account for this effect. Using the luminous blue helium burning stars, we construct a simple model of the recent (< 100 Myr) star formation in which an elevated but declining star formation rate has been present over this entire period. This is at odds with the presence of spectroscopic W-R features in the major star formation region which imply a short duration (<= 5 Myr) for the recent starburst. This suggests that starbursts displaying W-R features are not necessarily all of a short duration. Finally, we speculate on the possible causes of the present burst of star formation in this apparently isolated galaxy, and compare it to other nearby, well-studied dwarf starburst systems.

Star Formation in Sculptor Group Dwarf Irregular Galaxies and the Nature of "Transition" Galaxies

We present new H-alpha narrow band imaging of the HII regions in eight Sculptor Group dwarf irregular (dI) galaxies. Comparing the Sculptor Group dIs to the Local Group dIs, we find that the Sculptor Group dIs have, on average, lower values of SFR when normalized to either galaxy luminosity or gas mass (although there is considerable overlap between the two samples). The properties of ``transition'' (dSph/dIrr) galaxies in Sculptor and the Local Group are also compared and found to be similar. The transition galaxies are typically among the lowest luminosities of the gas rich dwarf galaxies. Relative to the dwarf irregular galaxies, the transition galaxies are found preferentially nearer to spiral galaxies, and are found nearer to the center of the mass distribution in the local cloud. While most of these systems are consistent with normal dI galaxies which currently exhibit temporarily interrupted star formation, the observed density-morphology relationship (which is weaker than that observed for the dwarf spheroidal galaxies) indicates that environmental processes such as ``tidal stirring'' may play a role in causing their lower SFRs.

ISM Abundances in Sculptor Group Dwarf Irregular Galaxies

Using the CTIO 4-m telescope, we have obtained optical spectra of HII regions in five Sculptor Group dwarf irregular galaxies. We derive oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur abundances from the HII region spectra. Oxygen abundances are derived via three different methods (the ``direct'' method, the empirical method guided by photoionization modeling of McGaugh (1991), and the purely empirical method of Pilyugin (2000)) and are compared. Significant systematic differences are found between the three methods, and we suggest that a recalibration of the empirical abundance scale is required. The N/O ratio for the metal-poor dI ESO 473-G24 of log (N/O) = -1.43 +/- 0.03 lies well above the plateau of log (N/O) = -1.60 +/- 0.02 found by Izotov & Thuan (1999) for a collection of metal-poor blue compact galaxies. This shows that not all galaxies with 12 + log (O/H) < 7.6 have identical elemental abundance ratios, and this implies that the Izotov & Thuan scenario for low metallicity galaxies is not universal. Measurements of the HII regions in NGC 625 yield log (N/O) = -1.25. Assuming N production by intermediate mass stars, this relatively high N/O ratio may be indicative of a long quiescent period prior to the recent active burst of star formation. The oxygen abundances in the Sculptor Group dIs are in good agreement with the relationship between metallicity and luminosity observed in the Local Group dIs. The Sculptor Group dIs, in general, lie closer to the simple closed box model evolutionary path than the Local Group dIs. The higher gas contents, lower average star formation rates, and closer resemblance to closed box evolution could all be indicative of evolution in a relatively low density environment.

Accurate Parameters of the Mass Distribution in Spiral Galaxies: 1. Fabry - Perot Observations of NGC 5585

Using the example of the Sd galaxy NGC 5585, it is shown that high resolution 2-D HII kinematical data are necessary to determine accurately the parameters of the mass distribution in spirals. New CFHT Fabry-Perot Halpha observations are combined with low resolution (20") Westerbork HI data to study its mass distribution. Using the combined rotation curve and best fit models, it can be seen that M/L of the luminous disk goes from 0.3 using only the HI rotation curve, to 0.8 using both the optical and the radio data. This reduces the dark-to-luminous mass ratio in NGC 5585 by ~30% through increasing the dark matter halo core radius by nearly the same amount. This shows the importance of the inner, rising part of the rotation curve for the accurate determination of the parameters of the global mass (luminous & dark) distribution and suggests that such a fine tuning of the rotation velocities using high resolution 2-D HII kinematics is necessary to look at correlations between the parameters of the dark matter component and other properties of galaxies.

An HI Survey of LSB galaxies selected from the APM Survey

We present preliminary results of a neutral hydrogen (HI) redshift survey to find low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies in the very nearby universe. Our sample consists of all galaxies in the APM catalog (Maddox et al 1990) with a mean surface brightness of mu > 24 mag/arcsec^2, down to a magnitude limit of b_j < 17. With the Parkes 64m Radiotelescope 35 objects were detected at v < 4300 km/s. The resulting luminosity function, HI mass function, and for the first time field mass function are presented. It is found that LSBs make a negligible contribution to the overall integrated luminosity, HI mass, and total mass contained in galaxies.

Detection of HI associated with the Sculptor Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy

Neutral hydrogen (HI) has been detected in the Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxy Sculptor with the 64 m Parkes single dish and mapped with the Australia Telescope synthesis array. Most of the detected HI is in two clouds \sim 15'-20' away from the optical center. The gas is observed at the same systemic velocity than the stars but at \ge 125 \kms away from the Magellanic Stream components in that region. A lower limit to the HI mass of 3.0 \times 10^4 \Msol is derived from the synthesis observation for an M_HI/L_B \simeq 0.02. This amount of HI is compatible with mass loss expected from normal giants even if only 10% of the gas is retained by the galaxy in its neutral form.

Mass-Models of Five Nearby Dwarf Irregular Galaxies

Five nearby dwarf irregular galaxies, amongst the recently surveyed dwarf members of the Sculptor and Centaurus A groups (at 2.5 Mpc and 3.5 Mpc), have been imaged in neutral hydrogen (HI) with the Australia Telescope and the Very Large Array. These objects have absolute magnitudes M_B in the range -14.9 to -12.7, yet they are clearly rotationally supported, with maximum rotation velocities ranging from 43 km/s to 67 km/s. Multi-component mass-models have been fitted to the rotation curves. We investigate the properties of their dark matter halos, and the scaling laws of the dark matter halos parameters.

NGC 5084: A Massive Disk Galaxy Accreting its Satellites ?

The spectra of 34 galaxies within 20 arcmins (\sim 100 kpc) of the lenticular galaxy NGC 5084 have been obtained using the FOCAP system on the Anglo-Australian 3.9m telescope. Nine objects are found with projected separations \lesssim 80 kpc and with radial velocities within \pm 630 km/s of the parent galaxy redshift. Using various techniques, their velocity differences and projected separations are used to estimate the mass of this S0 galaxy, which ranges from 6 \times 10^{12} M_{\odot} to 1 \times 10^{13} M_{\odot}. With such a mass, NGC 5084 is one of the most massive disk galaxy known, with a M/L_B \gtrsim 200 M_{\odot}/L_{\odot}. In agreement with the models' predictions of Quinn & Goodman (1986) but contrary to the results of Zaritsky et al (1993) obtained from their statistical sample, the properties of the satellites' population show no evidence for the "Holmberg effect", and a clear excess of satellites in retrograde orbits. Several signs hint that this S0 galaxy has survived the accretion of several satellites.

Discovery of Numerous Dwarf Galaxies in the Two Nearest Groups of Galaxies

We report the discovery of a large population of dwarf irregular galaxies in the two nearest groups of galaxies outside the Local Group, the Sculptor and the Centaurus A groups (2.5 and 3.5 Mpc). Total areas of approximately 940 and 910 square degrees in these groups were scanned visually on the SRC J films to find dwarf candidates. Redshifts were obtained by an HI survey carried out at Parkes, with detection limits of 4 \times 10^6 \Msun and 7.8 \times 10^6 \Msun , and 33 dwarf galaxies were successfully detected in the groups. A follow-up optical survey (Halpha spectroscopy) detected a few more, and confirmed most of the HI redshifts. A total of 16 and 20 dwarf galaxies are found in Sculptor and Centaurus A, of which 6 are newly identified objects, and 5 more have newly determined redshifts. In both groups the dwarf members show a wider spatial and velocity distribution than the brighter members. From their radial velocities and projected distances we estimate the crossing times of the groups, which confirm that they are not yet virialised.
