Repellent properties of perfect powers on partition functions: a heuristic approach

In 2013, Sun conjectured that the partition function $p(n)$ is never a perfect power for $n \geq 2$. Building on this, Merca, Ono, and Tsai recently observed that for any fixed integers $d \geq 0$ and $k \geq 2$, there appear to be only finitely many integers $n$ such that $p(n)$ differs from a perfect $k$th power by at most $d$. Denoting by $M_k(d)$ the largest such $n$, they conjectured that $M_k(d) = o(d^\epsilon)$ for every $\epsilon > 0$. In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic growth of analogs of $M_k(d)$ for a wide class of partition functions. We establish sharp lower bounds and provide heuristics which suggest that $M_k(d)$ in fact grows polylogarithmically in $d$, i.e. of order $\log^2(d)$. More generally, we prove that if $f(n)$ is a suitably random chosen function with asymptotic growth rate similar to that of $p(n)$, then the set of integers $n$ for which $f(n)$ is a perfect power is finite with probability 1.

Toward a Canonical Representation of Blocked Rectangular Grids with an Application to Finite Tiling Problems

Given the collection of all $m\times n$ rectangular grids which have a fixed number $1\leq r\leq mn$ of blocked cells, we explicitly describe a proper subset of the collection which is guaranteed to contain at least one grid from each equivalence class under symmetry, eliminating the majority of redundant grids. We analyze the extent to which redundant grids remain in the reduced set, and give general cases in which our methods exactly produce a complete set of canonical representatives for the equivalence classes. As an application of our results, we specify collections of polyomino tiling problems and find all solvable grids in each collection.

Replicable functions arising from code-lattice VOAs fixed by automorphisms

We ascertain properties of the algebraic structures in towers of codes, lattices, and vertex operator algebras (VOAs) by studying the associated subobjects fixed by lifts of code automorphisms. In the case of sublattices fixed by subgroups of code automorphisms, we identify replicable functions that occur as quotients of the associated theta functions by suitable eta products. We show that these lattice theta quotients can produce replicable functions not associated to any individual automorphisms. Moreover, we show that the structure of the fixed subcode can induce certain replicable lattice theta quotients and we provide a general code theoretic characterization of order doubling for lifts of code automorphisms to the lattice-VOA. Finally, we prove results on the decompositions of characters of fixed subVOAs.

Congruences satisfied by eta-quotients

The values of the partition function, and more generally the Fourier coefficients of many modular forms, are known to satisfy certain congruences. Results given by Ahlgren and Ono for the partition function and by Treneer for more general Fourier coefficients state the existence of infinitely many families of congruences. In this article we give an algorithm for computing explicit instances of such congruences for eta-quotients. We illustrate our method with a few examples.

Weierstrass points on $X_0^+(p)$ and supersingular $j$-invariants

We study the arithmetic properties of Weierstrass points on the modular curves $X_0^+(p)$ for primes $p$. In particular, we obtain a relationship between the Weierstrass points on $X_0^+(p)$ and the $j$-invariants of supersingular elliptic curves in characteristic $p$.

Quantum mock modular forms arising from eta-theta functions

In 2013, Lemke Oliver classified all eta-quotients which are theta functions. In this paper, we unify the eta-theta functions by constructing mock modular forms from the eta-theta functions with even characters, such that the shadows of these mock modular forms are given by the eta-theta functions with odd characters. In addition, we prove that our mock modular forms are quantum modular forms. As corollaries, we establish simple finite hypergeometric expressions which may be used to evaluate Eichler integrals of the odd eta-theta functions, as well as some curious algebraic identities.

Zeros of some level 2 Eisenstein series

The zeros of classical Eisenstein series satisfy many intriguing properties. Work of F. Rankin and Swinnerton-Dyer pinpoints their location to a certain arc of the fundamental domain, and recent work by Nozaki explores their interlacing property. In this paper we extend these distribution properties to a particular family of Eisenstein series on Gamma(2) because of its elegant connection to a classical Jacobi elliptic function cn(u) which satisfies a differential equation. As part of this study we recursively define a sequence of polynomials from the differential equation mentioned above that allow us to calculate zeros of these Eisenstein series. We end with a result linking the zeros of these Eisenstein series to an L-series.
