Detection time of Dirac particles in one space dimension

We consider particles emanating from a source point inside an interval in one-dimensional space and passing through detectors situated at the endpoints of the interval that register their arrival time. Unambiguous measurements of arrival or detection time are problematic in the orthodox narratives of quantum mechanics, since time is not a self-adjoint operator. By contrast, the arrival time at the boundary of a particle whose motion is being guided by a wave function through the deBroglie-Bohm guiding law is well-defined and unambiguous, and can be computationally feasible provided the presence of detectors can be modeled in an effective way that does not depend on the details of their makeup. We use an absorbing boundary condition for Dirac's equation (ABCD) proposed by Tumulka, which is meant to simulate the interaction of a particle initially inside a domain with the detectors situated on the boundary of the domain. By finding an explicit solution, we prove that the initial-boundary value problem for Dirac's equation satisfied by the wave function is globally well-posed, the solution inherits the regularity of the initial data, and depends continuously on it. We then consider the case of a pair of particles emanating from the source inside the interval, and derive explicit formulas for the distribution of first arrival times at each detector, which we hope can be used to study issues related to non-locality in this setup.

Convex geometries representable by at most 5 circles on the plane

A convex geometry is a closure system satisfying the anti-exchange property. In this work we document all convex geometries on 4- and 5-element base sets with respect to their representation by circles on the plane. All 34 non-isomorphic geometries on a 4-element set can be represented by circles, and of the 672 geometries on a 5-element set, we made representations of 623. Of the 49 remaining geometries on a 5-element set, one was already shown not to be representable due to the Weak Carousel property, as articulated by Adaricheva and Bolat (Discrete Mathematics, 2019). In this paper we show that 7 more of these convex geometries cannot be represented by circles on the plane, due to what we term the Triangle Property.

A Corpus for Reasoning About Natural Language Grounded in Photographs

We introduce a new dataset for joint reasoning about natural language and images, with a focus on semantic diversity, compositionality, and visual reasoning challenges. The data contains 107,292 examples of English sentences paired with web photographs. The task is to determine whether a natural language caption is true about a pair of photographs. We crowdsource the data using sets of visually rich images and a compare-and-contrast task to elicit linguistically diverse language. Qualitative analysis shows the data requires compositional joint reasoning, including about quantities, comparisons, and relations. Evaluation using state-of-the-art visual reasoning methods shows the data presents a strong challenge.

Visual Reasoning with Natural Language

Natural language provides a widely accessible and expressive interface for robotic agents. To understand language in complex environments, agents must reason about the full range of language inputs and their correspondence to the world. Such reasoning over language and vision is an open problem that is receiving increasing attention. While existing data sets focus on visual diversity, they do not display the full range of natural language expressions, such as counting, set reasoning, and comparisons. We propose a simple task for natural language visual reasoning, where images are paired with descriptive statements. The task is to predict if a statement is true for the given scene. This abstract describes our existing synthetic images corpus and our current work on collecting real vision data.
