Noncompact surfaces, triangulations and rigidity

Every noncompact surface is shown to have a (3,6)-tight triangulation, and applications are given to the generic rigidity of countable bar-joint frameworks in R^3. In particular, every noncompact surface has a (3,6)-tight triangulation that is minimally 3-rigid. A simplification of Richards' proof of Ker\'ekj\'art\'o's classification of noncompact surfaces is also given.

Partial triangulations of surfaces with girth constraints

Barnette and Edelson have shown that there are finitely many minimal triangulations of a connected compact 2-manifold M. Similar finiteness results are obtained for cellular partial triangulations that satisfy various girth inequality constraints for embedded cycles. A characterisation of various M-embedded sparse graphs is given in terms of the satisfaction of higher genus girth inequalities. With this it is shown that there are finitely many contraction-minimal M-embedded graphs that are (3,6)-tight or (3,3)-tight.

Topological inductive constructions for tight surface graphs

We investigate properties of sparse and tight surface graphs. In particular we derive topological inductive constructions for $(2, 2)$-tight surface graphs in the case of the sphere, the plane, the twice punctured sphere and the torus. In the case of the torus we identify all 116 irreducible base graphs and provide a geometric application involving contact graphs of configurations of circular arcs.

Crystal flex bases and the RUM spectrum

A theory of free spanning sets, free bases and their space group symmetric variants is developed for the first order flex spaces of infinite bar-joint frameworks. Such spanning sets and bases are computed for a range of fundamental crystallographic bar-joint frameworks, including the honeycomb (graphene) framework, the octahedron (perovskite) framework and the 2D and 3D kagome frameworks. It is also shown that the existence of crystal flex bases is closely related to linear structure in the rigid unit mode (RUM) spectrum and a more general geometric flex spectrum.

Commutants of weighted shift directed graph operator algebras

We consider non-selfadjoint operator algebras $\mathfrak{L}(G,λ)$ generated by weighted creation operators on the Fock-Hilbert spaces of countable directed graphs $G$. These algebras may be viewed as noncommutative generalizations of weighted Bergman space algebras, or as weighted versions of the free semigroupoid algebras of directed graphs. A complete description of the commutant is obtained together with broad conditions that ensure the double commutant property. It is also shown that the double commutant property may fail for $\mathfrak{L}(G,λ)$ in the case of the single vertex graph with two edges and a suitable choice of left weight function $λ$.

Atomic Representations of Rank 2 Graph Algebras

We provide a detailed analysis of atomic *-representations of rank 2 graphs on a single vertex. They are completely classified up to unitary equivalence, and decomposed into a direct sum or direct integral of irreducible atomic representations. The building blocks are described as the minimal *-dilations of defect free representations modelled on finite groups of rank 2.

Higher Rank Wavelets

A theory of higher rank multiresolution analysis is given in the setting of abelian multiscalings. This theory enables the construction, from a higher rank MRA, of finite wavelet sets whose multidilations have translates forming an orthonormal basis in $L^2(\bR^d)$. While tensor products of uniscaled MRAs provide simple examples we construct many nonseparable higher rank wavelets. In particular we construct Latin square wavelets as rank 2 variants of Haar wavelets. Also we construct nonseparable scaling functions for rank 2 variants of Meyer wavelet scaling functions, and we construct the associated nonseparable wavelets with compactly supported Fourier transforms. On the other hand we show that compactly supported scaling functions for biscaled MRAs are necessarily separable.

Manifolds of Hilbert space projections

The Hardy space H^2(R) for the upper half plane together with a unimodular function group representation u(λ) = \exp(i(λ_1ψ_1 + ... + λ_nψ_n)) for λin R^n, gives rise to a manifold M of orthogonal projections for the subspaces u(λ)H^2(R) of L^2(R). For classes of admissible functions ψ_i the strong operator topology closures of M and M \cup M^\perp are determined explicitly as various n-balls and n-spheres. The arguments used are direct and rely on the analysis of oscillatory integrals and Hilbert space geometry. Some classes of these closed projection manifolds are classified up to unitary equivalence. In particular the Fourier-Plancherel 2-sphere and the hyperbolic 3-sphere of Katavolos and Power appear as distinguished special cases admitting nontrivial unitary automorphisms groups which are explicitly described.

Dilation Theory for Rank 2 Graph Algebras

An analysis is given of $*$-representations of rank 2 single vertex graphs. We develop dilation theory for the non-selfadjoint algebras $\A_θ$ and $\A_u$ which are associated with the commutation relation permutation $θ$ of a 2 graph and, more generally, with commutation relations determined by a unitary matrix $u$ in $M_m(\bC) \otimes M_n(\bC)$. We show that a defect free row contractive representation has a unique minimal dilation to a $*$-representation and we provide a new simpler proof of Solel's row isometric dilation of two $u$-commuting row contractions. Furthermore it is shown that the C*-envelope of $\A_u$ is the generalised Cuntz algebra $Ø_{X_u}$ for the product system $X_u$ of $u$; that for $m\geq 2 $ and $n \geq 2 $ contractive representations of $\Ath$ need not be completely contractive; and that the universal tensor algebra $\T_+(X_u)$ need not be isometrically isomorphic to $\A_u$.

Operator algebras associated with unitary commutation relations

We define nonselfadjoint operator algebras with generators $L_{e_1},..., L_{e_n}, L_{f_1},...,L_{f_m}$ subject to the unitary commutation relations of the form \[ L_{e_i}L_{f_j} = \sum_{k,l} u_{i,j,k,l} L_{f_l}L_{e_k}\] where $u= (u_{i,j,k,l})$ is an $nm \times nm$ unitary matrix. These algebras, which generalise the analytic Toeplitz algebras of rank 2 graphs with a single vertex, are classified up to isometric isomorphism in terms of the matrix $u$.

Hyper-reflexivity of free semigroupoid algebras

As a generalization of the free semigroup algebras considered by Davidson and Pitts, and others, the second author and D.W. Kribs initiated a study of reflexive algebras associated with directed graphs. A free semigroupoid algebra L_G is generated by a family of partial isometries, and initial projections, acting on a generalized Fock space spawned from the directed graph G. We show that if the graph is finite then the algebra L_G is hyper-reflexive.

Distance Configurations of Points in a Plane with a Galois group that is not Soluble

We have conjectured that the constraint equations defined by a generic Laman graph are not soluble by radicals when the graph is 3-connected. We prove that this conjecture follows from the following simpler conjecture: the constraint equations defined by a generic Laman graph are not soluble by radicals if the graph does not contain a proper subgraph which is itself a Laman graph.

The $H^\infty$ algebras of higher rank graphs

We begin the study of a new class of operator algebras that arise from higher rank graphs. Every higher rank graph generates a Fock space Hilbert space and creation operators which are partial isometries acting on the space. We call the weak operator topology closed algebra generated by these operators a 'higher rank semigroupoid algebra'. A number of examples are discussed in detail, including the single vertex case and higher rank cycle graphs. In particular the cycle graph algebras are identified as matricial multivariable function algebras. We obtain reflexivity for a wide class of graphs and characterize semisimplicity in terms of the underlying graph.

Subalgebras of Graph C*-Algebras

We prove a spectral theorem for bimodules in the context of graph C*-algebras. A bimodule over a suitable abelian algebra is determined by its spectrum (i.e., its groupoid partial order) iff it is generated by the Cuntz-Krieger partial isometries which it contains iff it is invariant under the gauge automorphisms. We study 1-cocycles on the Cuntz-Krieger groupoid associated with a graph C*-algebra, obtaining results on when integer valued or bounded cocycles on the natural AF subgroupoid extend. To a finite graph with a total order, we associate a nest subalgebra of the graph C*-algebra and then determine its spectrum. This is used to investigate properties of the nest subalgebra. We give a characterization of the partial isometries in a graph C*-algebra which normalize a natural diagonal subalgebra and use this to show that guage invariant generating triangular subalgebras are classified by their spectra.

Free Semigroupoid Algebras

Every countable directed graph generates a Fock space Hilbert space and a family of partial isometries. These operators also arise from the left regular representations of free semigroupoids derived from directed graphs. We develop a structure theory for the weak operator topology closed algebras generated by these representations, which we call free semigroupoid algebras. We characterize semisimplicity in terms of the graph and show explicitly in the case of finite graphs how the Jacobson radical is determined. We provide a diverse collection of examples including; algebras with free behaviour, and examples which can be represented as matrix function algebras. We show how these algebras can be presented and decomposed in terms of amalgamated free products. We determine the commutant, consider invariant subspaces, obtain a Beurling theorem for them, conduct an eigenvalue analysis, give an elementary proof of reflexivity, and discuss hyper-reflexivity. Our main theorem shows the graph to be a complete unitary invariant for the algebra. This classification theorem makes use of an analysis of unitarily implemented automorphisms. We give a graph-theoretic description of when these algebras are partly free, in the sense that they contain a copy of a free semigroup algebra.

Generic 3-connected planar constraint systems are not soluble by radicals

We show that planar embeddable 3-connected CAD graphs are generically non-soluble. A CAD graph represents a configuration of points on the Euclidean plane with just enough distance dimensions between them to ensure rigidity. Formally, a CAD graph is a maximally independent graph, that is, one that satisfies the vertex-edge count 2v - 3 = e together with a corresponding inequality for each subgraph. The following main theorem of the paper resolves a conjecture of Owen in the planar case. Let G be a maximally independent 3-connected planar graph, with more than 3 vertices, together with a realisable assignment of generic dimensions for the edges which includes a normalised unit length (base) edge. Then, for any solution configuration for these dimensions on a plane, with the base edge vertices placed at rational points, not all coordinates of the vertices lie in a radical extension of the dimension field.

Partly Free Algebras from Directed Graphs

We say that a nonselfadjoint operator algebra is partly free if it contains a free semigroup algebra. Motivation for such algebras occurs in the setting of what we call free semigroupoid algebras. These are the weak operator topology closed algebras generated by the left regular representations of semigroupoids associated with finite or countable directed graphs. We expand our analysis of partly free algebras from previous work and obtain a graph-theoretic characterization of when a free semigroupoid algebra with countable graph is partly free. This analysis carries over to norm closed quiver algebras. We also discuss new examples for the countable graph case.

Limits of Finite Dimensional Nest Algebras

We introduce order conserving embeddings as a more general form of order preserving embeddings between finite dimensional nest algebras. The structure of these embeddings is determined, in terms of order indecomposable decompositions, and they are shown to be determined up to inner conjugacy by their induced maps on $K_0$. Classifications of direct systems and limit algebras are obtained in terms of dimension distribution groups.
