Moduli spaces of threefolds on the Noether line

In this paper, we study the moduli spaces of canonical threefolds with any prescribed geometric genus $p_g \ge 5$ which have the smallest possible canonical volume. This minimal volume is equal to the smallest half-integer that is larger than or equal to $\frac43 p_g -\frac{10}3$, and the threefolds in question are said to lie on the (refined) Noether line. For every such moduli space, we establish an explicit stratification, compute the dimension of all strata, and estimate the number of its irreducible components. Thus it yields a complete classification of threefolds on the (refined) Noether line. A new and unexpected phenomenon is that the number of irreducible components of the moduli space grows linearly with $p_g$, while the moduli space of canonical surfaces on the Noether line with any prescribed geometric genus has at most two irreducible components. The key idea in the proof is to relate these canonical threefolds $X$ to simple fibrations in $(1, 2)$-surfaces. In turn, this depends on the observation that a general member in $|K_X|$ is a canonical surface on the Noether line.

2-Gorenstein stable surfaces with $K_X^2 = 1$ and $\chi(X) = 3$

The compactification $\overline M_{1,3}$ of the Gieseker moduli space of surfaces of general type with $K_X^2 =1 $ and $\chi(X)=3$ in the moduli space of stable surfaces parametrises so-called stable I-surfaces. We classify all such surfaces which are 2-Gorenstein into four types using a mix of algebraic and geometric techniques. We find a new divisor in the closure of the Gieseker component and a new irreducible component of the moduli space.

Deformations of half-canonical Gorenstein curves in codimension four

Recent work of Ablett arXiv:2112.03400 and Kapustka, Kapustka, Ranestad, Schenck, Stillman and Yuan arXiv:2111.05817 outlines a number of constructions for singular Gorenstein codimension four varieties. Earlier work of Coughlan, Go{\l}\c{e}biowski, Kapustka and Kapustka arXiv:1609.01195 details a series of nonsingular Gorenstein codimension four constructions with different Betti tables. In this paper we exhibit a number of flat deformations between Gorenstein codimension four varieties in the same Hilbert scheme, realising many of the singular varieties as specialisations of the earlier nonsingular varieties.

Degeneration of Hodge structures on I-surfaces

Work of Green, Griffiths, Laza, and Robles suggests that the moduli space of (smoothable) stable surfaces should admit a natural stratification defined via Hodge theoretic data. In the case of stable surfaces with $K_X^2 = 1$ and $χ(X) = 3$ we compute the Hodge type of all examples known to us and show that all predicted degenerations are geometrically realised.

Simple fibrations in (1,2)-surfaces

We introduce the notion of a simple fibration in $(1,2)$-surfaces. That is, a hypersurface inside a certain weighted projective space bundle over a curve such that the general fibre is a minimal surface of general type with $p_g=2$ and $K^2=1$. We prove that almost all Gorenstein simple fibrations over the projective line with at worst canonical singularities are canonical threefolds "on the Noether line" with $K^3=\frac43 p_g-\frac{10}3$, and we classify them. Among them, we find all the canonical threefolds on the Noether line that have previously appeared in the literature. The Gorenstein simple fibrations over $\mathbb{P}^1$ are Cartier divisors in a toric $4$-fold. This allows to us to show among other things, that the previously known canonical threefolds on the Noether line form an open subset of the moduli space of canonical threefolds, that the general element of this component is a Mori Dream Space, and that there is a second component when the geometric genus is congruent to $6$ modulo $8$; the threefolds in this component are new.

Varieties of Nodal surfaces, coding theory and Discriminants of cubic hypersurfaces. Part 1: Generalities and nodal K3 surfaces. Part 2: Cubic Hypersurfaces, associated discriminants. Part 3: Nodal quintics. Part 4: Nodal sextics

We attach two binary codes to a projective nodal surface (the strict code K and, for even degree d, the extended code K' ) to investigate the `Nodal Severi varieties F(d, n) of nodal surfaces in P^3 of degree d and with n nodes, and their incidence hierarchy, relating partial smoothings to code shortenings. Our first main result solves a question which dates back over 100 years: the irreducible components of F(4, n) are in bijection with the isomorphism classes of their extended codes K', and these are exactly all the 34 possible shortenings of the extended Kummer code K' , and a component is in the closure of another if and only if the code of the latter is a shortening of the code of the former. We extend this result classifying the irreducible components of all nodal K3 surfaces in the same way, and we fully classify their extended codes. In this classification there are some sporadic cases, obtain through projection from a node. For surfaces of degree d=5 in P^3 we determine (with one possible exception) all the possible codes K, and for several cases of K, we show the irreducibility of the corresponding open set of F(5, n), for instance we show the irreducibility of the family of Togliatti quintic surfaces. In the fourth part we show that a `Togliatti-like' description holds for surfaces of degree 6 with the maximum number of nodes= 65: they are discriminants of cubic hypersurfaces in P^6 with 31 (respectively 32) nodes, and we have an irreducible 18-dimensional family of them. For degree d=6, our main result is based on some novel auxiliary results: 1) the study of the half-even sets of nodes on sextic surfaces, 2) the investigation of discriminants of cubic hypersurfaces X, 3) the computer assisted proof that, for n = 65, both codes K, K' are uniquely determined, 4) the description of these codes, relating the geometry of the Barth sextic with the Doro-Hall graph.

On T-divisors and intersections in $\overline{M}_{1,3}$

The moduli space of stable surfaces with $K_X^2 = 1$ and $χ(X) = 3$ has at least two irreducible components that contain surfaces with T-singularities. We show that the two known components intersect transversally in a divisor. Moreover, we exhibit other new boundary divisors and study how they intersect one another.

Constructing Fano 3-folds from cluster varieties of rank 2

Cluster algebras give rise to a class of Gorenstein rings which enjoy a large amount of symmetry. Concentrating on the rank 2 cases, we show how cluster varieties can be used to construct many interesting projective algebraic varieties. Our main application is then to construct hundreds of families of Fano 3-folds in codimensions 4 and 5. In particular, for Fano 3-folds in codimension 4 we construct at least one family for 187 of the 206 possible Hilbert polynomials contained in the Graded Ring Database.

Smoothing cones over K3 surfaces

We prove that the affine cone over a general primitively polarised K3 surface of genus g is smoothable if and only if g\le 10 or g=12. We also give several examples of singularities with special behaviour, such as surfaces whose affine cone is smoothable even though the projective cone is not.

On Z/3-Godeaux surfaces

We prove that Godeaux--Reid surfaces with torsion group Z/3 have topological fundamental group Z/3. For this purpose, we describe degenerations to stable KSBA surfaces with one 1/4(1,1) singularity, whose minimal resolution are elliptic fibrations with two multiplicity 3 fibres and one I_4 singular fibre. We study special such degenerations which have an involution, describing the corresponding Campedelli double plane construction. We also find some stable rational degenerations, some of which have more singularities, and one of which has a single 1/9(1,2) singularity, the minimal possible index for such a surface. Finally, we do the analogous study for the Godeaux surfaces with torsion Z/4.

Arithmetically Gorenstein Calabi-Yau threefolds in $\mathbb{P}^7$

We present a list of arithmetically Gorenstein Calabi-Yau threefolds in $\mathbb{P}^7$ and give evidence that this is a complete list. In particular we construct three new families of arithmetically Gorenstein Calabi-Yau threefolds in $\mathbb{P}^7$ for which no mirror construction is known.

K3 transitions and canonical 3-folds

We introduce K3 transitions as a geometric approach to studying canonical 3-folds. These transitions link different deformation classes of canonical 3-folds via a combination of birational contractions and smoothings. As applications, we investigate some basic properties of the web of canonical 3-folds in small codimension and give an interesting example of a singularity in codimension 4 with obstructed smoothings, similar to the famous example of the affine cone over a degree 6 del Pezzo surface.

Enumerating exceptional collections of line bundles on some surfaces of general type

We use constructions of surfaces as abelian covers to write down exceptional collections of line bundles of maximal length for every surface $X$ in certain families of surfaces of general type with $p_g=0$ and $K_X^2=3,4,5,6,8$. We also compute the algebra of derived endomorphisms for an appropriately chosen exceptional collection, and the Hochschild cohomology of the corresponding quasiphantom category. As a consequence, we see that the subcategory generated by the exceptional collection does not vary in the family of surfaces. Finally, we describe the semigroup of effective divisors on each surface, answering a question of Alexeev.

Kulikov surfaces form a connected component of the moduli space

We show that the Kulikov surfaces form a connected component of the moduli space of surfaces of general type with p_g=0 and K^2=6. We also give a new description for the surfaces, extending ideas of Inoue. Finally we calculate the bicanonical degree of a Kulikov surface, and prove that they verify the Bloch conjecture.

Extending symmetric determinantal quartic surfaces

We give an explicit construction for the extension of a symmetric determinantal quartic K3 surface to a Fano 6-fold. Remarkably, the moduli of the 6-fold extension are in one-to-one correspondence with the moduli of the quartic surface. As a consequence, we determine a 16-parameter family of surfaces of general type with p_g=1 and K^2=2 as weighted complete intersections inside Fano 6-folds.

Extending hyperelliptic K3 surfaces, and Godeaux surfaces with torsion Z/2

We study the extension of a hyperelliptic K3 surface to a Fano 6-fold. This determines a family of surfaces of general type with p_g=1, K^2=2 and hyperelliptic canonical curve, where each surface is a weighted complete intersection inside a Fano 6-fold. Finally, we use these hyperelliptic surfaces to determine an 8-parameter family of Godeaux surfaces with torsion Z/2.
