Volume renormalization of higher-codimension singular Yamabe spaces

Given an embedded closed submanifold $Σ^n$ in the closed Riemannian manifold $M^{n + k}$, where $k < n + 2$, we define extrinsic global conformal invariants of $Σ$ by renormalizing the volume associated to the unique singular Yamabe metric with singular set $Σ$. In case $n$ is odd, the renormalized volume is an absolute conformal invariant, while if $n$ is even, there is a conformally invariant energy term given by the integral of a local Riemannian submanifold invariant. In particular, the renormalized volume gives a global conformal invariant of a knot embedding in the three-sphere. We compute the variations of these quantities with respect to variations of the submanifold. We extend the construction of energies for even $n$ to general codimension by considering formal solutions to the singular Yamabe problem; except that, for each fixed $n$, there are finitely many $k \geq n + 2$, which we identify, for which the smoothness of the formal solution is obstructed and we obtain instead a pointwise conformal invariant. We compute the new quantities in several cases.

Self-dual and even Poincaré-Einstein metrics in dimension four

We prove rigidity and gap theorems for self-dual and even Poincaré-Einstein metrics in dimension four. As a corollary, we give an obstruction to the existence of self-dual Poincaré-Einstein metrics in terms of conformal invariants of the boundary and the topology of the bulk. As a by-product of our proof we identify a new scalar conformal invariant of three-dimensional Riemannian manifolds.

Scattering on singular Yamabe spaces

We apply scattering theory on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds to singular Yamabe metrics, applying the results to the study of the conformal geometry of compact manifolds with boundary. In particular, we define extrinsic versions of the conformally invariant powers of the Laplacian, or GJMS operators, on the boundary of any such manifold, along with associated extrinsic Q-curvatures. We use the existence and uniqueness of a singular Yamabe metric to define also nonlocal extrinsic fractional GJMS operators on the boundary, and draw other global conclusions about the scattering operator, including a Gauss-Bonnet theorem in dimension four.

Extrinsic curvature and conformal Gauss-Bonnet for four-manifolds with corner

This paper defines two new extrinsic curvature quantities on the corner of a four-dimensional Riemannian manifold with corner. One of these is a pointwise conformal invariant, and the conformal transformation of the other is governed by a new linear second-order pointwise conformally invariant partial differential operator. The Gauss-Bonnet theorem is then stated in terms of these quantities.

Formal theory of cornered asymptotically hyperbolic Einstein metrics

This paper makes a formal study of asymptotically hyperbolic Einstein metrics given, as conformal infinity, a conformal manifold with boundary. The space on which such an Einstein metric exists thus has a finite boundary in addition to the usual infinite boundary and a corner where the two meet. On the finite boundary a constant mean curvature umbilic condition is imposed. First, recent work of Nozaki, Takayanagi, and Ugajin is generalized and extended showing that such metrics cannot have smooth compactifications for generic corners embedded in the infinite boundary. A model linear problem is then studied: a formal expansion at the corner is derived for eigenfunctions of the scalar Laplacian subject to certain boundary conditions. In doing so, scalar ODEs are studied that are of relevance for a broader class of boundary value problems and also for the Einstein problem. Next, unique formal existence at the corner, up to order at least equal to the boundary dimension, of Einstein metrics in a cornered asymptotically hyperbolic normal form which are polyhomogeneous in polar coordinates is demonstrated for arbitrary smooth conformal infinity. Finally it is shown that, in the special case that the finite boundary is taken to be totally geodesic, there is an obstruction to existence beyond this order, which defines a conformal hypersurface invariant.

Exponential map and normal form for cornered asymptotically hyperbolic metrics

This paper considers asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds with a finite boundary intersecting the usual infinite boundary -- cornered asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds -- and proves a theorem of Cartan-Hadamard type near infinity for the normal exponential map on the finite boundary. As a main application, a normal form for such manifolds at the corner is then constructed, analogous to the normal form for usual asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds and suited to studying geometry at the corner. The normal form is at the same time a submanifold normal form near the finite boundary and an asymptotically hyperbolic normal form near the infinite boundary.
