Finite field regime for a quantum spin liquid in $α$-RuCl$_3$

An external magnetic field can induce a transition in $α$-RuCl$_3$ from an ordered zigzag state to a disordered state that is possibly related to the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. Here we present new field dependent inelastic neutron scattering and magnetocaloric effect measurements implying the existence of an additional transition out of the quantum spin liquid phase at an upper field limit $B_u$. The neutron scattering shows three distinct regimes of magnetic response. In the low field ordered state the response shows magnon peaks; the intermediate field regime shows only continuum scattering, and above $B_u$ the response shows sharp magnon peaks at the lower bound of a strong continuum. Measurable dispersion of magnon modes along the $(0,0,L)$ direction implies non-negligible inter-plane interactions. Combining the magnetocaloric effect measurements with other data a $T-B$ phase diagram is constructed. The results constrain the range where one might expect to observe quantum spin liquid behavior in $α$-RuCl$_3$.

Direct Evidence for Fermi Statistics from Proximity to the Kitaev Spin Liquid in RuCl3

A key characteristic of quantum spin liquids(QSL) is the presence of fractional excitations related to their entanglement properties, yet experimental verification of their statistics is missing. For example, in the potential Kitaev spin liquid, RuCl3 experiments uncovered signs of fractional particles, though not their Fermi statistics. Here we employ Raman scattering to reveal the true nature of the magnetic excitations, using improved experimental methods and analysis to remove the influence of laser heating and thermal fluctuations. Via the energy loss and gain spectra, we extract the energy and temperature dependence of the Raman susceptibility to prove RuCl3's magnetic response is given by pair creation of fermionic excitations. Furthermore, by comparing with quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) results for the exact Kitaev limit, we are able to discern the energy and temperature range where additional interaction terms are important. Our results open new directions in QSL research by providing a new way to investigate fractional excitations and the importance of terms causing spinon confinement.

Kitaev quantum spin liquid - concept and materialization

A decade ago, Alexei Kitaev proposed an exactly solvable $S$ = 1/2 model on a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice, where the spins fractionalize into Majorana fermions and form a topological quantum spin liquid (QSL) in the ground state. It was soon recognized that a family of complex iridium oxides, as well as ruthenium chloride, with honeycomb structure are magnetic insulators and accommodate essential ingredients of the Kitaev model, due to the interplay of electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling. This initiated a race to materialize the Kitaev QSL and to capture the signature of Majorana fermions. In this review, we provide a wide perspective of this rapidly growing field, including theory, materials and experiment. We first summarize the theoretical background of the Kitaev QSL ground state and its materialization using spin-orbital-entangled $J_{\rm eff}$ = 1/2 moments. This is followed by an overview of candidate materials and their magnetic properties, including Na$_2$IrO$_3$, $α$, $β$, $γ$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$,$α$-RuCl$_3$ and H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$. Finally, we review the latest exciting progress in the search for the Kitaev QSL. In particular, H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$ and $α$-RuCl$_3$ in applied magnetic field show signatures of the QSL state, and $α$-RuCl$_3$ has unusual magnetic excitations and thermal transport properties that are consistent with spin fractionalization.

Field evolution of magnons in $α$-RuCl$_3$ by high-resolution polarized terahertz spectroscopy

The Kitaev quantum spin liquid (KSL) is a theoretically predicted state of matter whose fractionalized quasiparticles are distinct from bosonic magnons, the fundamental excitation in ordered magnets. The layered honeycomb antiferromagnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ is a KSL candidate material, as it can be driven to a magnetically disordered phase by application of an in-plane magnetic field, with $H_c \sim 7$ T. Here we report a detailed characterization of the magnetic excitation spectrum of this material by high-resolution time-domain terahertz (THz) spectroscopy. We observe two sharp magnon resonances whose frequencies and amplitudes exhibit a discontinuity as a function of applied magnetic field, as well as two broader peaks at higher energy. Below the Néel temperature, we find that linear spin wave theory can account for all of these essential features of the spectra when a $C_3$-breaking distortion of the honeycomb lattice and the presence of structural domains are taken into account.

Large field-induced gap of Kitaev-Heisenberg paramagnons in $α$-RuCl$_{3}$

The honeycomb Kitaev-Heisenberg model is a source of a quantum spin liquid with Majorana fermions and gauge flux excitations as fractional quasiparticles. In the quest of finding a pertinent material, $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ recently emerged as a prime candidate. Here we unveil highly unusual low-temperature heat conductivity $κ$ of $α$-RuCl$_{3}$: beyond a magnetic field of $B_c\approx$ 7.5 T, $κ$ increases by about one order of magnitude, resulting in a large magnetic field dependent peak at about 7 K, both for in-plane as well as out-of-plane transport. This clarifies the unusual magnetic field dependence unambiguously to be the result of severe scattering of phonons off putative Kitaev-Heisenberg excitations in combination with a drastic field-induced change of the magnetic excitation spectrum. In particular, an unexpectedly large energy gap arises, which increases approximately linearly with the magnetic field and reaches a remarkably large $\hbarω_0/k_B\approx $ 50 K at 18 T.

Neutron tomography of magnetic Majorana fermions in a proximate quantum spin liquid

Quantum matter provides an effective vacuum out of which arise emergent particles not corresponding to any experimentally detected elementary particle. Topological quantum materials in particular have become a focus of intense research in part because of the remarkable possibility to realize Majorana fermions, with their potential for new, decoherence-free quantum computing architectures. In this paper we undertake a study on high-quality single crystal of $α-RuCl_3$ which has been identified as a material realizing a proximate Kitaev state, a topological quantum state with magnetic Majorana fermions. Four-dimensional tomographic reconstruction of dynamical correlations measured using neutrons is uniquely powerful for probing such magnetic states. We discover unusual signals, including an unprecedented column of scattering over a large energy interval around the Brillouin zone center which is remarkably stable with temperature. This is straightforwardly accounted for in terms of the Majorana excitations present in Kitaev's topological quantum spin liquid. Other, more delicate, features in the scattering can be transparently associated with perturbations to an ideal model. This opens a window on emergent magnetic Majorana fermions in correlated materials.

Tuning the magnetic and structural phase transitions of PrFeAsO via Fe/Ru spin dilution

Neutron diffraction and muon spin relaxation measurements are used to obtain a detailed phase diagram of Pr(Fe,Ru)AsO. The isoelectronic substitution of Ru for Fe acts effectively as spin dilution, suppressing both the structural and magnetic phase transitions. The temperature of the tetragonal-orthorhombic structural phase transition decreases gradually as a function of x. Slightly below the transition temperature coherent precessions of the muon spin are observed corresponding to static magnetism, possibly reflecting a significant magneto-elastic coupling in the FeAs layers. Short range order in both the Fe and Pr moments persists for higher levels of x. The static magnetic moments disappear at a concentration coincident with that expected for percolation of the J1-J2 square lattice model.

Neutron Diffraction Study of anomalous negative thermal expansion in non-superconducting PrFe1-xRuxAsO

Neutron powder diffraction has been used to investigate the structural and magnetic behavior of the isoelectronically doped Fe pnictide material PrFe1-xRuxAsO. Substitution of Ru for Fe suppresses the structural and magnetic phase transitions that occur in the undoped compound PrFeAsO. Contrary to the behavior usually observed in 1111 pnictide materials, the suppression of both the structural and magnetic transitions does not result in the emergence of superconductivity or any other new ground state. Interestingly, PrFeAsO itself shows an unusual negative thermal expansion (NTE) along the c-axis, from 60K down to at least 4K; this does not occur in superconducting samples such as those formed by doping with fluorine on the oxygen site. We find that NTE is present for all concentrations of PrFe1-xRuxAsO with x ranging from 0.05 to 0.75. These results suggest that the absence of superconductivity in these materials could be related to the presence of NTE.
