ZAYA1-8B Technical Report

We present ZAYA1-8B, a reasoning-focused mixture-of-experts (MoE) model with 700M active and 8B total parameters, built on Zyphra's MoE++ architecture. ZAYA1-8B's core pretraining, midtraining, and supervised fine-tuning (SFT) were performed on a full-stack AMD compute, networking, and software platform. With under 1B active parameters, ZAYA1-8B matches or exceeds DeepSeek-R1-0528 on several challenging mathematics and coding benchmarks, and remains competitive with substantially larger open-weight reasoning models. ZAYA1-8B was trained from scratch for reasoning, with reasoning data included from pretraining onward using an answer-preserving trimming scheme. Post-training uses a four-stage RL cascade: reasoning warmup on math and puzzles; a 400-task RLVE-Gym curriculum; math and code RL with test-time compute traces and synthetic code environments built from competitive-programming references; and behavioral RL for chat and instruction following. We also introduce Markovian RSA, a test-time compute method that recursively aggregates parallel reasoning traces while carrying forward only bounded-length reasoning tails between rounds. In TTC evaluation, Markovian RSA raises ZAYA1-8B to 91.9\% on AIME'25 and 89.6\% on HMMT'25 while carrying forward only a 4K-token tail, narrowing the gap to much larger reasoning models including Gemini-2.5 Pro, DeepSeek-V3.2, and GPT-5-High.

Holographic Renormalization Group and Stress Tensor Operators

The holographic duality conjectures a relation between strongly coupled quantum systems and quantum gravity in higher-dimensional spacetimes. Gravitational theories in two and three dimensions are meaningful examples for classical and quantum exploration due to their unique characteristics, notably the absence of propagating bulk degrees of freedom and the presence of only boundary degrees of freedom, distinguishing them from higher-dimensional counterparts. These gravitational theories exhibit complex interactions when the bulk spacetime has a finite size, regulated by Zamolodchikov's double-trace irrelevant $T\overline{T}$ operator. This thesis aims to gain a holographic understanding of $\mathrm{AdS}_3$ and JT gravity under the influence of the $T\overline{T}$ deformation. Under a finite radial cutoff, these theories exhibit perturbative behavior that implies the emergence of the Nambu-Goto action for the corresponding boundary graviton action. We also conducted semi-classical calculations of observables related to finite-cutoff gravity and its dual $T\overline{T}$-deformed CFT description, including correlation functions involving stress tensors and gravitational Wilson lines, along with an analysis of their supersymmetric extensions. Additionally, we explored the implications of general stress tensor deformations within field-theoretic and holographic settings. This thesis integrates previously adapted publications while also pioneering new ground, notably exploring the definition of a quantum $T\overline{T}$ operator beyond two dimensions with $\frac{1}{N}$ corrections, investigating quantum-corrected higher point correlators for a planar boundary, and offering insights into a two-dimensional spherical boundary at a finite cutoff. Furthermore, throughout the thesis, we show more details in calculations at various points.

Flows in the Space of Interacting Chiral Boson Theories

We study interacting theories of $N$ left-moving and $\overline{N}$ right-moving Floreanini-Jackiw bosons in two dimensions. A parameterized family of such theories is shown to enjoy (non-manifest) Lorentz invariance if and only if its Lagrangian obeys a flow equation driven by a function of the energy-momentum tensor. We discuss the canonical quantization of such theories along classical stress tensor flows, focusing on the case of the root-$T \overline{T}$ deformation, where we obtain perturbative results for the deformed spectrum in a certain large-momentum limit. In the special case $N = \overline{N}$, we consider the quantum effective action for the root-$T \overline{T}$-deformed theory by expanding around a general classical background, and we find that the one-loop contribution vanishes for backgrounds with constant scalar gradients. Our analysis can also be interpreted via dual $U(1)$ Chern-Simons theories in three dimensions, which might be used to describe deformations of charged $\mathrm{AdS}_3$ black holes or quantum Hall systems.

Anisotropic Compactification of Nonrelativistic M-Theory

We study a decoupling limit of M-theory where the three-form gauge potential becomes critical. This limit leads to nonrelativistic M-theory coupled to a non-Lorentzian spacetime geometry. Nonrelativistic M-theory is U-dual to M-theory in the discrete light cone quantization, a non-perturbative approach related to the Matrix theory description of M-theory. We focus on the compactification of nonrelativistic M-theory over a two-torus that exhibits anisotropic behaviors due to the foliation structure of the spacetime geometry. We develop a frame covariant formalism of the toroidal geometry, which provides a geometrical interpretation of the recently discovered polynomial realization of SL(2,Z) duality in nonrelativistic type IIB superstring theory. We will show that the nonrelativistic IIB string background fields transform as polynomials of an effective Galilean "boost velocity" on the two-torus. As an application, we construct an action principle describing a single M5-brane in nonrelativistic M-theory and study its compactification over the anisotropic two-torus. This procedure leads to a D3-brane action in nonrelativistic IIB string theory that makes the SL(2,Z) invariance manifest in the polynomial realization.

Root-$T \overline{T}$ Deformed Boundary Conditions in Holography

We develop the holographic dictionary for pure $\mathrm{AdS}_3$ gravity where the Lagrangian of the dual $2d$ conformal field theory has been deformed by an arbitrary function of the energy-momentum tensor. In addition to the $T \overline{T}$ deformation, examples of such functions include a class of marginal stress tensor deformations which are special because they leave the generating functional of connected correlators unchanged up to a redefinition of the source and expectation value. Within this marginal class, we identify the unique deformation that commutes with the $T \overline{T}$ flow, which is the root-$T \overline{T}$ operator, and write down the modified boundary conditions corresponding to this root-$T \overline{T}$ deformation. We also identify the unique marginal stress tensor flow for the cylinder spectrum of the dual CFT which commutes with the inviscid Burgers' flow driven by $T \overline{T}$, and we propose this unique flow as a candidate root-$T \overline{T}$ deformation of the energy levels. We study BTZ black holes in $\mathrm{AdS}_3$ subject to root-$T \overline{T}$ deformed boundary conditions, and find that their masses flow in a way which is identical to that of our candidate root-$T \overline{T}$ energy flow equation, which offers evidence that this flow is the correct one. Finally, we also obtain the root-$T \overline{T}$ deformed boundary conditions for the gauge field in the Chern-Simons formulation of $\mathrm{AdS}_3$ gravity.

$T\bar{T}$ in JT Gravity and BF Gauge Theory

JT gravity has a first-order formulation as a two-dimensional BF theory, which can be viewed as the dimensional reduction of the Chern-Simons description of $3d$ gravity. We consider $T\bar{T}$-type deformations of the $(0+1)$-dimensional dual to this $2d$ BF theory and interpret the deformation as a modification of the BF theory boundary conditions. The fundamental observables in this deformed BF theory, and in its $3d$ Chern-Simons lift, are Wilson lines and loops. In the $3d$ Chern-Simons setting, we study modifications to correlators involving boundary-anchored Wilson lines which are induced by a $T\bar{T}$ deformation on the $2d$ boundary; results are presented at both the classical level (using modified boundary conditions) and the quantum-mechanical level (using conformal perturbation theory). Finally, we calculate the analogous deformed Wilson line correlators in $2d$ BF theory below the Hagedorn temperature where the principal series dominates over the discrete series.

$T \overline{T}$ Deformations of Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics

We define a manifestly supersymmetric version of the $T \overline{T}$ deformation appropriate for a class of $(0+1)$-dimensional theories with $\mathcal{N} = 1$ or $\mathcal{N} = 2$ supersymmetry, including one presentation of the super-Schwarzian theory which is dual to JT supergravity. These deformations are written in terms of Noether currents associated with translations in superspace, so we refer to them collectively as $f(\mathcal{Q})$ deformations. We provide evidence that the $f(\mathcal{Q})$ deformations of $\mathcal{N} = 1$ and $\mathcal{N} = 2$ theories are on-shell equivalent to the dimensionally reduced supercurrent-squared deformations of $2d$ theories with $\mathcal{N} = (0,1)$ and $\mathcal{N} = (1,1)$ supersymmetry, respectively. In the $\mathcal{N} = 1$ case, we present two forms of the $f(\mathcal{Q})$ deformation which drive the same flow, and clarify their equivalence by studying the analogous equivalent deformations in the non-supersymmetric setting.

$T\overline{T}$-deformed free energy of the Airy model

Sharpening the holographic correspondence of Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity and its dual matrix model description at a finite radial cutoff $\lambda$ through the $T\overline{T}$ deformation is of interest. To proceed, we simplify the problem by considering the Airy model and deform Airy correlators in the same way as in $T\overline{T}$-deformed JT gravity. We use those correlators to compute the annealed and quenched free energies for both $\lambda > 0$ and $\lambda < 0$ from an integral representation of the replica trick. At the leading order in $\lambda$ and low temperatures, we confirm that the genus-zero quenched free energy monotonically decreases as a function of temperature when perturbation theory is valid. We then study the all-genus quenched free energy at low temperatures, where we discover and discuss subtleties due to non-perturbative effects in the Airy model, as well as the contributions from the non-perturbative branch under the $T\overline{T}$ deformation.

Field Theory of Interacting Boundary Gravitons

Pure three-dimensional gravity is a renormalizable theory with two free parameters labelled by $G$ and $\Lambda$. As a consequence, correlation functions of the boundary stress tensor in AdS$_3$ are uniquely fixed in terms of one dimensionless parameter, which is the central charge of the Virasoro algebra. The same argument implies that AdS$_3$ gravity at a finite radial cutoff is a renormalizable theory, but now with one additional parameter corresponding to the cutoff location. This theory is conjecturally dual to a $T\overline{T}$-deformed CFT, assuming that such theories actually exist. To elucidate this, we study the quantum theory of boundary gravitons living on a cutoff planar boundary and the associated correlation functions of the boundary stress tensor. We compute stress tensor correlation functions to two-loop order ($G$ being the loop counting parameter), extending existing tree level results. This is made feasible by the fact that the boundary graviton action simplifies greatly upon making a judicious field redefinition, turning into the Nambu-Goto action. After imposing Lorentz invariance, the correlators at this order are found to be unambiguous up to a single undetermined renormalization parameter.

Dual D-Brane Actions in Nonrelativistic String Theory

We study worldvolume actions for D-branes coupled to the worldvolume U(1) gauge field and Ramond-Ramond (RR) potentials in nonrelativistic string theory. This theory is a self-contained corner of relativistic string theory and has a string spectrum with a Galilean-invariant dispersion relation. We therefore refer to such D-branes in nonrelativistic string theory as nonrelativistic D-branes. We focus on the bosonic fields in spacetime and also couple the D-branes to general closed string geometry, Kalb-Ramond, and dilaton background fields. We dualize nonrelativistic D-branes by performing a duality transformation on the worldvolume U(1) gauge field and uncover novel dual D-brane actions. This generalizes familiar properties, such as the SL(2,Z) duality in Type IIB superstring theory and the relation between Type IIA superstring and M-theory, to nonrelativistic string and M-theory. Moreover, we generalize the limit of string theory, in which nonrelativistic string theory arises, to include RR potentials. This stringy limit induces a codimension-two foliation structure in spacetime. This spacetime geometry is non-Riemannian and known as string Newton-Cartan geometry. In contrast, nonrelativistic M-theory that we probe by dualizing D2- and D4-branes in nonrelativistic string theory arises as a membrane limit of M-theory, and it is coupled to a membrane Newton-Cartan geometry with a codimension-three foliation structure. We also discuss T-duality in nonrelativistic string theory and generalize Buscher rules from earlier work to include RR potentials.

$T\overline{T}$ deformation in SCFTs and integrable supersymmetric theories

We calculate the $\mathcal{S}$-multiplets for two-dimensional Euclidean $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ and $\mathcal{N} = (2,2)$ superconformal field theories under the $T\overline{T}$ deformation at leading order of perturbation theory in the deformation coupling. Then, from these $\mathcal{N} = (0, 2)$ deformed multiplets, we calculate two- and three-point correlators. We show the $\mathcal{N} = (0,2)$ chiral ring's elements do not flow under the $T\overline{T}$ deformation. Specializing to integrable supersymmetric seed theories, such as $\mathcal{N} = (2,2)$ Landau-Ginzburg models, we use the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz to study the S-matrices and ground state energies. From both an S-matrix perspective and Melzer's folding prescription, we show that the deformed ground state energy obeys the inviscid Burgers' equation. Finally, we show that several indices independent of $D$-term perturbations including the Witten index, Cecotti-Fendley-Intriligator-Vafa index and elliptic genus do not flow under the $T\overline{T}$ deformation.

Descendants in celestial CFT and emergent multi-collinear factorization

Multi-collinear factorization limits provide a window to study how locality and unitarity of scattering amplitudes can emerge dynamically from celestial CFT, the conjectured holographic dual to gauge and gravitational theories in flat space. To this end, we first use asymptotic symmetries to commence a systematic study of conformal and Kac-Moody descendants in the OPE of celestial gluons. Recursive application of these OPEs then equips us with a novel holographic method of computing the multi-collinear limits of gluon amplitudes. We perform this computation for some of the simplest helicity assignments of the collinear particles. The prediction from the OPE matches with Mellin transforms of the expressions in the literature to all orders in conformal descendants. In a similar vein, we conclude by studying multi-collinear limits of graviton amplitudes in the leading approximation of sequential double-collinear limits, again finding a consistency check against the leading order OPE of celestial gravitons.

Probing holography in $p$-adic CFT

We holographically calculate the partition functions of certain types of isotropic sectors of the CFTs dual to Bruhat-Tits trees and $p$-adic BTZ black holes. Along the way, we propose new spectral decompositions of the Laplacian operator other than the plane-wave basis on these two types of background, with both analytical and numerical evidence. We extract the density of states and hence entropy from the BTZ partition function via the inverse Laplace transform. Then the one-loop Witten diagram is computed in the $p$-adic BTZ black hole background, yielding constraints on the heavy-heavy-light averaged three-point coefficient of its boundary $p$-adic CFT. Finally, for general $p$-adic CFTs (not necessarily holographic), we analyze the representation theory of their global conformal group $PGL\left(2,\mathbb{Q}_p\right)$, and discuss the suitability of different representations as Hilbert spaces of $p$-adic CFT.
