Applications of Subleading-color Amplitudes in N=4 SYM Theory

A number of features and applications of subleading color amplitudes of N=4 SYM theory are reviewed. Particular attention is given to the IR divergences of the subleading-color amplitudes, the relationships of N=4 SYM theory to N=8 supergravity, and to geometric interpretations of one-loop subleading color and N^k MHV amplitudes of N=4 SYM theory.

Linear relations between N >= 4 supergravity and subleading-color SYM amplitudes

The IR divergences of supergravity amplitudes are less severe than those of planar SYM amplitudes, and are comparable to those subleading-color SYM amplitudes that are most subleading in the 1/N expansion, namely O(1/epsilon^L) for L-loop amplitudes. We derive linear relations between one- and two-loop four-point amplitudes and one-loop five-point amplitudes of N = 4, 5, and 6 supergravity and the most-subleading-color contributions of the analogous amplitudes of N = 0, 1, and 2 SYM theory, extending earlier results for N = 8 supergravity amplitudes. Our work relies on linear relations between N >= 4 supergravity and planar SYM amplitudes that were recently derived using the double-copy property of gravity, and color-kinematic duality of gauge theories.

Form factors and scattering amplitudes in N=4 SYM in dimensional and massive regularizations

The IR-divergent scattering amplitudes of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory can be regulated in a variety of ways, including dimensional regularization and massive (or Higgs) regularization. The IR-finite part of an amplitude in different regularizations generally differs by an additive constant at each loop order, due to the ambiguity in separating finite and divergent contributions. We give a prescription for defining an unambiguous, regulator-independent finite part of the amplitude by factoring off a product of IR-divergent "wedge" functions. For the cases of dimensional regularization and the common-mass Higgs regulator, we define the wedge function in terms of a form factor, and demonstrate the regularization independence of the n-point amplitude through two loops. We also deduce the form of the wedge function for the more general differential-mass Higgs regulator, although we lack an explicit operator definition in this case. Finally, using extended dual conformal symmetry, we demonstrate the link between the differential-mass wedge function and the anomalous dual conformal Ward identity for the finite part of the scattering amplitude.

More loops and legs in Higgs-regulated N=4 SYM amplitudes

We extend the analysis of Higgs-regulated planar amplitudes of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory to four loops for the four-gluon amplitude and to two loops for the five-gluon amplitude. Our calculations are consistent with a proposed all-loop ansatz for planar MHV n-gluon amplitudes that is the analog of the BDS ansatz in dimensional regularization. In all cases considered, we have verified that the IR-finite parts of the logarithm of the amplitudes have the same dependence on kinematic variables as the corresponding functions in dimensionally-regulated amplitudes (up to overall additive constants, which we determine). We also study various Regge limits of N=4 SYM planar n-gluon amplitudes. Euclidean Regge limits of Higgs-regulated n \geq 4 amplitudes yield results similar in form to those found using dimensional regularization, but with different expressions for the gluon trajectory and Regge vertices resulting from the different regulator scheme. We also show that the Regge limit of the four-gluon amplitude is dominated at next-to-leading-log order by vertical ladder diagrams together with the class of vertical ladder diagrams with a single H-shaped insertion.

Higgs-regularized three-loop four-gluon amplitude in N=4 SYM: exponentiation and Regge limits

We compute the three-loop contribution to the N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills planar four-gluon amplitude using the recently-proposed Higgs IR regulator of Alday, Henn, Plefka, and Schuster. In particular, we test the proposed exponential ansatz for the four-gluon amplitude that is the analog of the BDS ansatz in dimensional regularization. By evaluating our results at a number of kinematic points, and also in several kinematic limits, we establish the validity of this ansatz at the three-loop level. We also examine the Regge limit of the planar four-gluon amplitude using several different IR regulators: dimensional regularization, Higgs regularization, and a cutoff regularization. In the latter two schemes, it is shown that the leading logarithmic (LL) behavior of the amplitudes, and therefore the lowest-order approximation to the gluon Regge trajectory, can be correctly obtained from the ladder approximation of the sum of diagrams. In dimensional regularization, on the other hand, there is no single dominant set of diagrams in the LL approximation. We also compute the NLL and NNLL behavior of the L-loop ladder diagram using Higgs regularization.

IR divergences and Regge limits of subleading-color contributions to the four-gluon amplitude in N=4 SYM Theory

We derive a compact all-loop-order expression for the IR-divergent part of the N=4 SYM four-gluon amplitude, which includes both planar and all subleading-color contributions, based on the assumption that the higher-loop soft anomalous dimension matrices are proportional to the one-loop soft anomalous dimension matrix, as has been recently conjectured. We also consider the Regge limit of the four-gluon amplitude, and we present evidence that the leading logarithmic growth of the subleading-color amplitudes is less severe than that of the planar amplitudes. We examine possible 1/N^2 corrections to the gluon Regge trajectory, previously obtained in the planar limit from the BDS ansatz. The double-trace amplitudes have Regge behavior as well, with a nonsense-choosing Regge trajectory and a Regge cut which first emerges at three loops.

A super MHV vertex expansion for N=4 SYM theory

We present a supersymmetric generalization of the MHV vertex expansion for all tree amplitudes in N=4 SYM theory. In addition to the choice of a reference spinor, this super MHV vertex expansion also depends on four reference Grassmann parameters. We demonstrate that a significant fraction of diagrams in the expansion vanishes for a judicious choice of these Grassmann parameters, which simplifies the computation of amplitudes. Even pure-gluon amplitudes require fewer diagrams than in the ordinary MHV vertex expansion. We show that the super MHV vertex expansion arises from the recursion relation associated with a holomorphic all-line supershift. This is a supersymmetric generalization of the holomorphic all-line shift recently introduced in arXiv:0811.3624. We study the large-z behavior of generating functions under these all-line supershifts, and find that they generically provide 1/z^k falloff at (Next-to)^k MHV level. In the case of anti-MHV generating functions, we find that a careful choice of shift parameters guarantees a stronger 1/z^(k+4) falloff. These particular all-line supershifts may therefore play an important role in extending the super MHV vertex expansion to N=8 supergravity.

Subleading-color contributions to gluon-gluon scattering in N=4 SYM theory and relations to N=8 supergravity

We study the subleading-color (nonplanar) contributions to the four-gluon scattering amplitudes in N=4 supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory. Using the formalisms of Catani and of Sterman and Tejeda-Yeomans, we develop explicit expressions for the infrared-divergent contributions of all the subleading-color L-loop amplitudes up to three loops, and make some conjectures for the IR behavior for arbitrary L. We also derive several intriguing relations between the subleading-color one- and two-loop four-gluon amplitudes and the four-graviton amplitudes of N=8 supergravity. The exact one- and two-loop N=8 supergravity amplitudes can be expressed in terms of the one- and two-loop N-independent N=4 SYM amplitudes respectively, but the natural generalization to higher loops fails, despite having a simple interpretation in terms of the 't Hooft picture. We also find that, at least through two loops, the subleading-color amplitudes of N=4 SYM theory have uniform transcendentality (as do the leading-color amplitudes). Moreover, the N=4 SYM Catani operators, which express the IR-divergent contributions of loop amplitudes in terms of lower-loop amplitudes, are also shown to have uniform transcendentality, and to be the maximum transcendentality piece of the QCD Catani operators.

Two-loop graviton scattering relation and IR behavior in N=8 supergravity

We derive an ABDK-like relation between the one- and two-loop four-graviton amplitudes in N=8 supergravity. Specifically we show that the infrared divergent part of the two-loop amplitude is one-half the square of the one-loop amplitude, suggesting an exponential structure for IR divergences. The difference between the two-loop amplitude and one-half the square of the full one-loop amplitude is therefore finite, and expressible in a relatively simple form. We give arguments for generalizations to higher loops and n-point functions, suggesting that the exponential of the full one-loop amplitude may be corrected, to low orders, by only simple finite terms.

Regge behavior of gluon scattering amplitudes in N=4 SYM theory

It is shown that the four-gluon scattering amplitude for N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in the planar limit can be written, in both the weak- and strong-coupling limits, as a reggeized amplitude, with a parent trajectory and an infinite number of daughter trajectories. This result relies crucially on the fact that the leading IR-divergence and the finite log^2(s/t)-dependent piece of the amplitude are characterized by the same function for all values of the coupling, as conjectured by Bern, Dixon, and Smirnov, and proved by Alday and Maldacena in the strong-coupling limit. We use the Alday-Maldacena result to determine the strong-coupling Regge trajectory.

Level-rank duality of untwisted and twisted D-branes of the so(N)_K WZW model

We analyze the level-rank duality of untwisted and epsilon-twisted D-branes of the so(N)_K WZW model. Untwisted D-branes of so(N)_K are characterized by integrable tensor and spinor representations of so(N)_K. Level-rank duality maps untwisted so(N)_K D-branes corresponding to (equivalence classes of) tensor representations onto those of so(K)_N. The epsilon-twisted D-branes of so(2n)_2k are characterized by (a subset of) integrable tensor and spinor representations of so(2n-1)_2k+1. Level-rank duality maps spinor epsilon-twisted so(2n)_2k D-branes onto those of so(2k)_2n. For both untwisted and epsilon-twisted D-branes, we prove that the spectrum of an open string ending on these D-branes is isomorphic to the spectrum of an open string ending on the level-rank-dual D-branes.

Level-rank duality of the U(N) WZW model, Chern-Simons theory, and 2d qYM theory

We study the WZW, Chern-Simons, and 2d qYM theories with gauge group U(N). The U(N) WZW model is only well-defined for odd level K, and this model is shown to exhibit level-rank duality in a much simpler form than that for SU(N). The U(N) Chern-Simons theory on Seifert manifolds exhibits a similar duality, distinct from the level-rank duality of SU(N) Chern-Simons theory on S^3. When q = e^{2 pi i/(N+K)}, the observables of the 2d U(N) qYM theory can be expressed as a sum over a finite subset of U(N) representations. When N and K are odd, the qYM theory exhibits N <--> K duality, provided q = e^{2 pi i/(N+K)} and theta = 0 mod 2 pi /(N+K).

Analytical Representation of a Black Hole Puncture Solution

The ``moving puncture'' technique has led to dramatic advancements in the numerical simulations of binary black holes. Hannam et.al. have recently demonstrated that, for suitable gauge conditions commonly employed in moving puncture simulations, the evolution of a single black hole leads to a well-known time-independent, maximal slicing of Schwarzschild. They construct the corresponding solution in isotropic coordinates numerically and demonstrate its usefulness, for example for testing and calibrating numerical codes that employ moving puncture techniques. In this Brief Report we point out that this solution can also be constructed analytically, making it even more useful as a test case for numerical codes.

Twisted D-branes of the SU(N)_K WZW model and level-rank duality

We analyze the level-rank duality of omega_c-twisted D-branes of SU(N)_K (when N and K>2). When N or K is even, the duality map involves Z_2-cominimal equivalence classes of twisted D-branes. We prove the duality of the spectrum of an open string stretched between omega_c-twisted D-branes, and ascertain the relation between the charges of level-rank-dual omega_c-twisted D-branes.

Level-rank duality of untwisted and twisted D-branes

Level-rank duality of untwisted and twisted D-branes of WZW models is explored. We derive the relation between D0-brane charges of level-rank dual untwisted D-branes of su(N)_K and sp(n)_k, and of level-rank dual twisted D-branes of su(2n+1)_2k+1. The analysis of level-rank duality of twisted D-branes of su(2n+1)_2k+1 is facilitated by their close relation to untwisted D-branes of sp(n)_k. We also demonstrate level-rank duality of the spectrum of an open string stretched between untwisted or twisted D-branes in each of these cases.
