Schmidt games and Cantor winning sets

Schmidt games and the Cantor winning property give alternative notions of largeness, similar to the more standard notions of measure and category. Being intuitive, flexible, and applicable to recent research made them an active object of study. We survey the definitions of the most common variants and connections between them. A new game called the Cantor game is invented and helps with presenting a unifying framework. We prove surprising new results such as the coincidence of absolute winning and $1$ Cantor winning in doubling metric spaces, and the fact that $1/2$ winning implies absolute winning for subsets of $\mathbb{R}$, and we suggest a prototypical example of a Cantor winning set to show the ubiquity of such sets in metric number theory and ergodic theory.

A note on badly approximabe sets in projective space

Recently, Ghosh \& Haynes \cite{HG} proved a Khintchine-type result for the problem of Diophantine approximation in certain projective spaces. In this note we complement their result by observing that a Jarn\'{\i}k-type result also holds for `badly approximable' points in real projective space. In particular, we prove that the natural analogue in projective space of the classical set of badly approximable numbers has full Hausdorff dimension when intersected with certain compact subsets of real projective space. Furthermore, we also establish an analogue of Khintchine's theorem for convergence relating to `intrinsic' approximation of points in these compact sets.

A problem in non-linear Diophantine approximation

In this paper we obtain the Lebesgue and Hausdorff measure results for the set of vectors satisfying infinitely many fully non-linear Diophantine inequalities. The set is associated with a class of linear inhomogeneous partial differential equations whose solubility depends on a certain Diophantine condition. The failure of the Diophantine condition guarantees the existence of a smooth solution.

An Inhomogeneous Jarn\'ik type theorem for planar curves

In metric Diophantine approximation there are two main types of approximations: simultaneous and dual for both homogeneous and inhomogeneous settings. The well known measure-theoretic theorems of Khintchine and Jarn\'ik are fundamental in these settings. Recently, there has been substantial progress towards establishing a metric theory of Diophantine approximations on manifolds. In particular, both the Khintchine and Jarn\'ik type results have been established for planar curves except for only one case. In this paper, we prove an inhomogeneous Jarn\'ik type theorem for convergence on planar curves and in so doing complete the metric theory for both the homogeneous and inhomogeneous settings for approximation on planar curves.

Cantor-winning sets and their applications

We introduce and develop a class of \textit{Cantor-winning} sets that share the same amenable properties as the classical winning sets associated to Schmidt's $(\alpha,\beta)$-game: these include maximal Hausdorff dimension, invariance under countable intersections with other Cantor-winning sets and invariance under bi-Lipschitz homeomorphisms. It is then demonstrated that a wide variety of badly approximable sets appearing naturally in the theory of Diophantine approximation fit nicely into our framework. As applications of this phenomenon we answer several previously open questions, including some related to the Mixed Littlewood conjecture and the $\times2, \times3$ problem.

A note on weighted badly approximable linear forms

We prove a result in the area of twisted Diophantine approximation related to the theory of Schmidt games. In particular, under certain restrictions we give a affirmative answer to the analogue in this setting of a famous conjecture of Schmidt from Diophantine approximation.

On a mixed Khintchine problem in Diophantine approximation

We establish a `mixed' version of a fundamental theorem of Khintchine within the field of simultaneous Diophantine approximation. Via the notion of ubiquity we are able to make significant progress towards the completion of the metric theory associated with mixed problems in this setting. This includes finding a natural mixed analogue of the classical Jarn\'ik-Besicovich Theorem. Previous knowledge surrounding mixed problems was almost entirely restricted to the multiplicative setup of de Mathan & Teuli\'e [21], where the concept originated.

The mixed Littlewood conjecture for pseudo-absolute values

In this paper we study the Mixed Littlewood Conjecture with pseudo-absolute values. We show that if p is a prime and D is a pseudo-absolute value sequence satisfying mild conditions then then the infimum over natural numbers n of the quantity n.|n|_p.|n|_D.||nx|| equals 0 for all real x. Our proof relies on a measure rigidity theorem due to Lindenstrauss and lower bounds for linear forms in logarithms due to Baker and Wustholz. We also deduce the answer to the related metric question of how fast the infimum above tends to zero, for almost every x.

Twisted inhomogeneous Diophantine approximation and badly approximable sets

For any real pair i, j geq 0 with i+j=1 let Bad(i, j) denote the set of (i, j)-badly approximable pairs. That is, Bad(i, j) consists of irrational vectors x:=(x_1, x_2) in R^2 for which there exists a positive constant c(x) such that max {||qx_1||^(-i), ||qx_2||^(-j)} > c(x)/q for all q in N. A new characterization of the set Bad(i, j) in terms of `well-approximable' vectors in the area of 'twisted' inhomogeneous Diophantine approximation is established. In addition, it is shown that Bad^x(i, j), the `twisted' inhomogeneous analogue of Bad(i, j), has full Hausdorff dimension 2 when x is chosen from the set Bad(i, j). The main results naturally generalise the i=j=1/2 work of Kurzweil.

On shrinking targets for Z^m actions on tori

Let A be an n by m matrix with real entries. Consider the set Bad_A of x \in [0,1)^n for which there exists a constant c(x)>0 such that for any q \in Z^m the distance between x and the point {Aq} is at least c(x) |q|^{-m/n}. It is shown that the intersection of Bad_A with any suitably regular fractal set is of maximal Hausdorff dimension. The linear form systems investigated in this paper are natural extensions of irrational rotations of the circle. Even in the latter one-dimensional case, the results obtained are new.
