Feynman-Kac perturbation of $C^*$ quantum stochastic flows

The method of Feynman-Kac perturbation of quantum stochastic processes has a long pedigree, with the theory usually developed within the framework of processes on von Neumann algebras. In this work, the theory of operator spaces is exploited to enable a broadening of the scope to flows on $C^*$ algebras. Although the hypotheses that need to be verified in the general setting may seem numerous, we provide auxiliary results that enable this to be simplified in many of the cases which arise in practice. A wide variety of examples is provided by way of illustration.

Markovianity and the Thompson Monoid $F^+$

We introduce a new distributional invariance principle, called `partial spreadability', which emerges from the representation theory of the Thompson monoid $F^+$ in noncommutative probability spaces. We show that a partially spreadable sequence of noncommutative random variables is adapted to a local Markov filtration. Conversely we show that a large class of noncommutative stationary Markov sequences provides representations of the Thompson monoid $F^+$. In the particular case of a classical probability space, we arrive at a de Finetti theorem for stationary Markov sequences with values in a standard Borel space.

Quantum stochastic cocycles and completely bounded semigroups on operator spaces II

Quantum stochastic cocycles provide a basic model for time-homogeneous Markovian evolutions in a quantum setting, and a direct counterpart in continuous time to quantum random walks, in both the Schrodinger and Heisenberg pictures. This paper is a sequel to one in which correspondences were established between classes of quantum stochastic cocycle on an operator space or C*-algebra, and classes of Schur-action `global' semigroup on associated matrix spaces over the operator space. In this paper we investigate the stochastic generation of cocycles via the generation of their corresponding global semigroups, with the primary purpose of strengthening the scope of applicability of semigroup theory to the analysis and construction of quantum stochastic cocycles. An explicit description is given of the affine relationship between the stochastic generator of a completely bounded cocycle and the generator of any one of its associated global semigroups. Using this, the structure of the stochastic generator of a completely positive quasicontractive quantum stochastic cocycle on a C*-algebra whose expectation semigroup is norm continuous is derived, giving a comprehensive stochastic generalisation of the Christensen--Evans extension of the GKS&L theorem of Gorini, Kossakowski and Sudarshan, and Lindblad. The transformation also provides a new existence theorem for cocycles with unbounded structure map as stochastic generator. The latter is applied to a model of interacting particles known as the quantum exclusion Markov process, in particular on integer lattices in dimensions one and two.

An algebraic construction of quantum flows with unbounded generators

It is shown how to construct *-homomorphic quantum stochastic Feller cocycles for certain unbounded generators, and so obtain dilations of strongly continuous quantum dynamical semigroups on C* algebras; this generalises the construction of a classical Feller process and semigroup from a given generator. The construction is possible provided the generator satisfies an invariance property for some dense subalgebra A_0 of the C* algebra A and obeys the necessary structure relations; the iterates of the generator, when applied to a generating set for A_0, must satisfy a growth condition. Furthermore, it is assumed that either the subalgebra A_0 is generated by isometries and A is universal, or A_0 contains its square roots. These conditions are verified in four cases: classical random walks on discrete groups, Rebolledo's symmetric quantum exclusion processes and flows on the non-commutative torus and the universal rotation algebra.

Quantum stochastic cocycles and completely bounded semigroups on operator spaces

An operator space analysis of quantum stochastic cocycles is undertaken. These are cocycles with respect to an ampliated CCR flow, adapted to the associated filtration of subspaces, or subalgebras. They form a noncommutative analogue of stochastic semigroups in the sense of Skorohod. One-to-one correspondences are established between classes of cocycle of interest and corresponding classes of one-parameter semigroups on associated matrix spaces. Each of these 'global' semigroups may be viewed as the expectation semigroup of an associated quantum stochastic cocycle on the corresponding matrix space. The classes of cocycle covered include completely positive contraction cocycles on an operator system, or C*-algebra; completely contractive cocycles on an operator space; and contraction operator cocycles on a Hilbert space. As indicated by Accardi and Kozyrev, the Schur-action matrix semigroup viewpoint circumvents technical (domain) limitations inherent in the theory of quantum stochastic differential equations. An infinitesimal analysis of quantum stochastic cocycles from the present wider perspective is given in a sister paper.

E-semigroups Subordinate to CCR Flows

The subordinate E-semigroups of a fixed E-semigroup are in one-to-one correspondence with local projection-valued cocycles of that semigroup. For the CCR flow we characterise these cocycles in terms of their stochastic generators, that is, in terms of the coefficient driving the quantum stochastic differential equation of Hudson-Parthasarathy type that such cocycles necessarily satisfy. In addition various equivalence relations and order-type relations on E-semigroups are considered, and shown to work especially well in the case of those semigroups subordinate to the CCR flows by exploiting our characterisation.

Quantum Stochastic Operator Cocycles via Associated Semigroups

A recent characterisation of Fock-adapted contraction operator stochastic cocycles on a Hilbert space, in terms of their associated semigroups, yields a general principle for the construction of such cocycles by approximation of their stochastic generators. This leads to new existence results for quantum stochastic differential equations. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for a cocycle to satisfy such an equation.

Construction of some Quantum Stochastic Operator Cocycles by the Semigroup Method

A new method for the construction of Fock-adapted operator Markovian cocycles is outlined, and its use is illustrated by application to a number of examples arising in physics and probability. The construction uses the Trotter-Kato Theorem and a recent characterisation of such cocycles in terms of an associated family of contraction semigroups.
