Coleman-Weinberg symmetry breaking in $SU(8)$ induced by a third rank antisymmetric tensor scalar field

We study $SU(8)$ symmetry breaking induced by minimizing the Coleman-Weinberg effective potential for a third rank antisymmetric tensor scalar field in the 56 representation. Instead of breaking $SU(8) \supset SU(3) \times SU(5)$, we find that the stable minimum of the potential breaks the original symmetry according to $SU(8) \supset SU(3) \times Sp(4)$. Using both numerical and analytical methods, we present results for the potential minimum, the corresponding Goldstone boson structure and BEH mechanism, and the group-theoretic classification of the residual states after symmetry breaking.

A frame-dependent gravitational effective action mimics a cosmological constant, but modifies the black hole horizon

A frame dependent effective action motivated by the postulates of three-space general coordinate invariance and Weyl scaling invariance exactly mimics a cosmological constant in Robertson-Walker spacetimes. However, in a static spherically symmetric Schwarzschild-like geometry it modifies the black hole horizon structure within microscopic distances of the nominal horizon, in such a way that $g_{00}$ never vanishes. This could have important implications for the black hole "information paradox".

Collinearity constraints for on-shell massless particle three-point functions, and implications for allowed-forbidden $n+1$-point functions

A simple collinearity argument implies that the massless particle three-point function of helicities $h_1, h_2, h_3$ with corresponding real-valued four-momenta $k_1, k_2, k_3$ taken as all incoming or all outgoing (i.e., $k_1 +k_2 +k_3=0$), vanishes by helicity conservation unless $h_1+h_2+h_3=0$. When any one particle with four-momentum $k$ is off mass shell, this constraint no longer applies; a forbidden amplitude with $h_1+h_2+h_3\neq 0$ on-shell can be nonzero off-shell, but vanishes proportionally to $k^2$ as $k$ approaches mass shell. When an on-shell forbidden amplitude is coupled to an allowed $n$-point amplitude to form an $n+1$ point function, this $k^2$ factor in the forbidden amplitude cancels the $k^2$ in the propagator, leading to a $n+1$-point function that has no pole at $k^2=0$. We relate our results for real-valued four-momenta to the corresponding selection rules that have been derived in the on-shell literature for complexified four-momenta.

Gravitational Decoherence for Mesoscopic Systems

We extend the recent gravitational decoherence analysis of Pikovski et al. to an individual mesoscopic system with internal state characterized by a coherent superposition of energy eigenstates. We express the Pikovski et al. effect directly in terms of the energy variance, and show that the interferometric visibility is bounded from below. Hence unlike collisional decoherence, the visibility does not approach zero at large times, although for a large system it can become very small.

Classical Gauged Massless Rarita-Schwinger Fields

We show that, in contrast to known results in the massive case, a minimally gauged massless Rarita-Schwinger field yields a consistent classical theory, with a generalized fermionic gauge invariance realized as a canonical transformation. To simplify the algebra, we study a two-component left chiral reduction of the massless theory. We formulate the classical theory in both Lagrangian and Hamiltonian form for a general non-Abelian gauging, and analyze the constraints and the Rarita-Schwinger gauge invariance of the action. An explicit wave front calculation for Abelian gauge fields shows that wave-like modes do not propagate with superluminal velocities. An analysis of Rarita-Schwinger spinor scattering from gauge fields shows that adiabatic decoupling fails in the limit of zero gauge field amplitude, invalidating various "no-go" theorems based on "on-shell" methods that claim to show the impossibility of gauging Rarita-Schwinger fields. Quantization of Rarita-Schwinger fields, using many formulas from this paper, is taken up in the following paper.

Quantized Gauged Massless Rarita-Schwinger Fields

We study quantization of a minimally gauged massless Rarita-Schwinger field, by both Dirac bracket and functional integral methods. The Dirac bracket approach in covariant radiation gauge leads to an anticommutator that has a non-singular limit as gauge fields approach zero, is manifestly positive semidefinite, and is Lorentz invariant. The constraints also have the form needed to apply the Faddeev-Popov method for deriving a functional integral, using the same constrained Hamiltonian and inverse constraint matrix that appear in the Dirac bracket approach.

Classical and Quantum Gauged Massless Rarita-Schwinger Fields

We show that, in contrast to known results in the massive case, a minimally gauged massless Rarita-Schwinger field yields consistent classical and quantum theories, with a generalized fermionic gauge invariance. The quantized case is studied in gauge covariant radiation gauge and $Ψ_0=0$ gauge for the Rarita-Schwinger field, by both functional integral and Dirac bracket methods. In $Ψ_0=0$ gauge, the constraints have the form needed to apply the Faddeev-Popov method for deriving a functional integral. The Dirac bracket approach in $Ψ_0=0$ gauge yields consistent Hamilton equations of motion, and in covariant radiation gauge leads to anticommutation relations with the correct positivity properties. We discuss relativistic covariance of the anticommutation relations, and of Rarita-Schwinger scattering from an Abelian potential. We note that fermionic gauge transformations are a canonical transformation, but further details of the transformation between different fermionic gauges are left as an open problem.

Gravitation and the noise needed in objective reduction models

I briefly recall intersections of my research interests with those of John Bell. I then argue that the noise needed in theories of objective state vector reduction most likely comes from a fluctuating complex part in the classical spacetime metric, that is, state vector reduction is driven by {\it complex number valued} "spacetime foam".

Spherically symmetric vacuum solutions arising from trace dynamics modifications to gravitation

We derive the equations governing static, spherically symmetric vacuum solutions to the Einstein equations, as modified by the frame-dependent effective action arising from trace dynamics. We give analytic and numerical results for the solutions of these equations, first in polar coordinates, and then in isotropic coordinates. General features of the static case are that (i) there is no horizon, since $g_{00}$ is non-vanishing for finite values of the polar radius, and only vanishes (in isotropic coordinates) at the internal singularity, (ii) the Ricci scalar $R$ vanishes identically, and (iii) there is a physical singularity at cosmological distances. The large distance singularity may be an artifact of the static restriction, since we find that the behavior at large distances is altered in a time-dependent solution using the Mc Vittie Ansatz.

$SU(n)$ symmetry breaking by rank three and rank two antisymmetric tensor scalars

We study $SU(n)$ symmetry breaking by rank three and rank two antisymmetric tensor fields. Using tensor analysis, we derive branching rules for the adjoint and antisymmetric tensor representations, and explain why for general $SU(n)$ one finds the same $U(1)$ generator mismatch that we noted earlier in special cases. We then compute the masses of the various scalar fields in the branching expansion, in terms of parameters of the general renormalizable potential for the antisymmetric tensor fields.

Phases with modular ground states for symmetry breaking by rank 3 and rank 2 antisymmetric tensor scalars

Working with explicit examples given by the 56 representation in $SU(8)$, and the 10 representation in $SU(5)$, we show that symmetry breaking of a group ${\cal G}\supset {\cal G}_1 \times {\cal G}_2$ by a scalar in a rank three or two antisymmetric tensor representation leads to a number of distinct $modular$ ground states. For these broken symmetry phases, the ground state is periodic in an integer divisor $p$ of $N$, where $N>0$ is the absolute value of the nonzero $U(1)$ generator of the scalar component $Φ$ that is a singlet under the simple subgroups ${\cal G}_1$ and ${\cal G}_2$. Ground state expectations of fractional powers $Φ^{p/N}$ provide order parameters that distinguish the different phases. For the case of period $p=1$, this reduces to the usual Higgs mechanism, but for divisors $N\geq p>1$ of $N$ it leads to a modular ground state with periodicity $p$, implementing a discrete Abelian symmetry group $U(1)/Z_p$. This observation may allow new approaches to grand unification and family unification.

SU(8) family unification with boson-fermion balance

We formulate an $SU(8)$ family unification model motivated by requiring that the theory should incorporate the graviton, gravitinos, and the fermions and gauge fields of the standard model, with boson--fermion balance. Gauge field $SU(8)$ anomalies cancel between the gravitinos and spin $\frac {1}{2}$ fermions. The 56 of scalars breaks $SU(8)$ to $SU(3)_{family} \times SU(5)\times U(1)/Z_5$, with the fermion representation content needed for "flipped" $SU(5)$ with three families, and with residual scalars in the $10$ and $\overline{10}$ representations that break flipped $SU(5)$ to the standard model. Dynamical symmetry breaking can account for the generation of $5$ representation scalars needed to break the electroweak group. Yukawa couplings of the 56 scalars to the fermions are forbidden by chiral and gauge symmetries, so in the first stage of $SU(8)$ breaking fermions remain massless. In the limit of vanishing gauge coupling, there are $N=1$ and $N=8$ supersymmetries relating the scalars to the fermions, which restrict the form of scalar self-couplings and should improve the convergence of perturbation theory, if not making the theory finite and "calculable". In an Appendix we give an analysis of symmetry breaking by a Higgs component, such as the $(1,1)(-15)$ of the $SU(8)$ 56 under $SU(8) \supset SU(3) \times SU(5) \times U(1)$, which has nonzero $U(1)$ generator.

Incorporating gravity into trace dynamics: the induced gravitational action

We study the incorporation of gravity into the trace dynamics framework for classical matrix-valued fields, from which we have proposed that quantum field theory is the emergent thermodynamics, with state vector reduction arising from fluctuation corrections to this thermodynamics. We show that the metric must be incorporated as a classical, not a matrix-valued, field, with the source for gravity the exactly covariantly conserved trace stress-energy tensor of the matter fields. We then study corrections to the classical gravitational action induced by the dynamics of the matrix-valued matter fields, by examining the average over the trace dynamics canonical ensemble of the matter field action, in the presence of a general background metric. Using constraints from global Weyl scaling and three-space general coordinate transformations, we show that to zeroth order in derivatives of the metric, the induced gravitational action in the preferred rest frame of the trace dynamics canonical ensemble must have the form $$ ΔS=\int d^4x (^{(4)}g)^{1/2}(g_{00})^{-2} A\big(g_{0i} g_{0j} g^{ij}/g_{00}, D^ig_{ij}D^j/g_{00}, g_{0i}D^i/g_{00}\big), $$ with $D^i$ defined through the co-factor expansion of $^{(4)}g$ by $^{(4)}g/{^{(3)}g}=g_{00}+g_{0i}D^i$, and with $A(x,y,z)$ a general function of its three arguments. This action has "chameleon-like" properties: For the Robertson-Walker cosmological metric, it {\it exactly} reduces to a cosmological constant, but for the Schwarzschild metric it diverges as $(1-2M/r)^{-2}$ near the Schwarzschild radius, indicating that it will substantially affect the horizon structure.

On spontaneous photon emission in collapse models

We reanalyze the problem of spontaneous photon emission in collapse models. We show that the extra term found by Bassi and Duerr is present for non-white (colored) noise, but its coefficient is proportional to the zero frequency Fourier component of the noise. This leads one to suspect that the extra term is an artifact. When the calculation is repeated with the final electron in a wave packet and with the noise confined to a bounded region, the extra term vanishes in the limit of continuum state normalization. The result obtained by Fu and by Adler and Ramazanoglu from application of the Golden Rule is then recovered.

Modeling the flyby anomalies with dark matter scattering: update with additional data and further predictions

We continue our exploration of whether the flyby anomalies can be explained by scattering of spacecraft nucleons from dark matter gravitationally bound to the earth, with the addition of data from five new flybys to that from the original six. We continue to use our model in which inelastic and elastic scatterers populate shells generated by the precession of circular orbits with normals tilted with respect to the earth's axis. With 11 data points and 8 parameters in the model, a statistically meaningful fit is obtained with a chi-squared of 2.7. We give plots of the anomalous acceleration along the spacecraft trajectory, and the cumulative velocity change, for the five flybys which exhibit a significant nonzero anomaly. We also discuss implications of the fit for dark matter-nucleon cross sections, give the prediction of our fit for the anomaly to be expected from the future Juno flyby, and give predictions of our fit for flyby orbit orientation changes. In addition we give formulas for estimating the flyby temperature increase caused by dark matter inelastic scattering, and for the fraction of flyby nucleons undergoing such scatters. Finally, for circular satellite orbits, we give a table of predicted secular changes in orbit radius. These are much too large to be reasonable -- comparing with data for COBE and GP-B supplied to us by Edward Wright (after the first version of this paper was posted), we find that our model predicts changes in orbit radius that are too large by many orders of magnitude. So the model studied here is ruled out. We conclude that further modeling of the flyby anomalies must simultaneously attempt to fit constraints coming from satellite orbits.

Spacecraft calorimetry as a test of the dark matter scattering model for flyby anomalies

In previous papers we have shown that scattering of spacecraft nucleons from dark matter gravitationally bound to the earth gives a possible explanation of the flyby velocity anomalies. In addition to flyby velocity changes arising from the average over the scattering cross section of the collision-induced nucleon velocity change, there will be spacecraft temperature increases arising from the mean squared fluctuation of the collision-induced velocity change. We give here a quantitative treatment of this effect, and suggest that careful calorimetry on spacecraft traversing the region below 70,000 km where the flyby velocity changes take place could verify, or at a minimum place significant constraints, on the dark matter scattering model.

Parameterized Adaptive Multidimensional Integration Routines (PAMIR): Localization by Repeated 2^p Subdivision

This book draft gives the theory of a new method for p dimensional adaptive integration by repeated 2^p subdivision of simplexes and hypercubes. A new method of constructing high order integration routines for these geometries permits adjustable samplings of the integration region controlled by user supplied parameters. An outline of the programs and use instructions are also included in the draft. The fortran programs are not included, but will be published with this draft as a book.
