Circumbinary disk evolution in the presence of an outer companion star

We consider a hierarchical triple system consisting of an inner eccentric binary with an outer companion. A highly misaligned circumbinary disk around the inner binary is subject to two competing effects: (i) nodal precession about the inner binary eccentricity vector that leads to an increase in misalignment (polar alignment) and (ii) Kozai-Lidov (KL) oscillations of eccentricity and inclination driven by the outer companion that leads to a reduction in the misalignment. The outcome depends upon the ratio of the timescales of these effects. If the inner binary torque dominates, then the disk aligns to a polar orientation. If the outer companion torque dominates, then the disk undergoes KL oscillations. In that case, the highly eccentric and misaligned disk is disrupted and accreted by the inner binary, while some mass is transferred to the outer companion. However, when the torques are similar, the outer parts of the circumbinary disk can undergo large eccentricity oscillations while the inclination remains close to the polar orientation. The range of initial disk inclinations that evolve to a polar orientation is smaller in the presence of the outer companion. Disk breaking is also more likely, at least temporarily, during the polar alignment process. The stellar orbits in HD 98800 have parameters such that polar alignment of the circumbinary disk is expected. In the absence of the gas, solid particles are unstable at much smaller radii than the gas disk inner tidal truncation radius because KL driven eccentricity leads to close encounters with the binary.

Generalised warped disk equations

The manner in which warps in accretion disks evolve depends on the magnitude of the viscosity. For small viscosity $(α< H/R)$ the warp evolves in a wave-like manner; for large viscosity $H/R<α\ll 1$ it evolves diffusively. Here $α$ is the viscosity parameter and $H/R$ the disk aspect ratio. Currently there is no simple set of equations which describes the evolution in both regimes. In this paper we describe a possible solution to this problem and introduce a set of one-dimensional equations that describe the evolution of a warped disk that are applicable in both high and low viscosity regimes for arbitrary tilts, but small warps.

Asteroid impacts on terrestrial planets: The effects of super-Earths and the role of the $ν_6$ resonance

With N-body simulations of a planetary system with an asteroid belt we investigate how the asteroid impact rate on the Earth is affected by the architecture of the planetary system. We find that the $ν_6$ secular resonance plays an important role in the asteroid collision rate with the Earth. Compared to exoplanetary systems, the solar system is somewhat special in its lack of a super-Earth mass planet in the inner solar system. We therefore first consider the effects of the presence of a super-Earth in the terrestrial planet region. We find a significant effect for super-Earths with a mass of around $10\,\rm M_\oplus$ and a separation greater than about $0.7\,\rm AU$. For a super-Earth that is interior to the Earth's orbit, the number of asteroids colliding with Earth increases the closer the super-Earth is to the Earth's orbit. This is the result of multiple secular resonance locations causing more asteroids to be perturbed onto Earth-crossing orbits. When the super-Earth is placed exterior to Earth's orbit, the collision rate decreases substantially because the $ν_6$ resonance no longer exists in the asteroid belt region. We also find that changing the semi-major axis of Saturn leads to a significant decrease in the asteroid collision rate, while increasing its mass increases the collision rate. These results may have implications for the habitability of exoplanetary systems.

Search for Interstellar Water in the Translucent Molecular Cloud toward HD 154368

We report an upper limit of 9 x 10^{12} cm-2 on the column density of water in the translucent cloud along the line of sight toward HD 154368. This result is based upon a search for the C-X band of water near 1240 Åcarried out using the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph of the Hubble Space Telescope. Our observational limit on the water abundance together with detailed chemical models of translucent clouds and previous measurements of OH along the line of sight constrain the branching ratio in the dissociative recombination of H_3O+ to form water. We find at the $3σ$ level that no more than 30% of dissociative recombinations of H_3O+ can lead to H_2O. The observed spectrum also yielded high-resolution observations of the Mg II doublet at 1239.9 Åand 1240.4 Å, allowing the velocity structure of the dominant ionization state of magnesium to be studied along the line of sight. The Mg II spectrum is consistent with GHRS observations at lower spectral resolution that were obtained previously but allow an additional velocity component to be identified.
