The Telescope Calibration of the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer

Fifty years after the very first sounding rocket measurement of cosmic X-ray polarization, the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) mission has effectively opened a new window into the X-ray sky. Prior to launch of IXPE, an extensive calibration campaign was carried out to fully characterize the response of this new type of instrument. Specifically, the polarization-sensitive detectors were intensively calibrated in Italy, where they were developed and built. The X-ray optics, which collect and focus X rays onto the detectors, were built and calibrated in the U.S. A key question was whether the telescope (optics + detectors) calibrations could be synthesized from the individual component calibrations, avoiding time consuming and costly end-to-end calibrations for a flight program with a fixed schedule. The data presented here are from a calibration of the flight spare telescope utilizing the flight spare detector and flight spare mirror assembly combined. These data show that the presence of the mirror module does not affect the polarization response of the detectors (within the required calibration accuracy) and that the angular resolution of the telescopes could be accurately determined. Thus, the original extensive stand-alone ground calibration data of all the flight detectors and all the flight optic can be utilized in full to derive the flight telescopes calibrations.

X-ray Polarization of the Black Hole X-ray Binary 4U 1630-47 Challenges Standard Thin Accretion Disk Scenario

Large energy-dependent X-ray polarization degree is detected by the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer ({IXPE}) in the high-soft emission state of the black hole X-ray binary 4U 1630--47. The highly significant detection (at $\approx50σ$ confidence level) of an unexpectedly high polarization, rising from $\sim6\%$ at $2$ keV to $\sim10\%$ at $8$ keV, cannot be easily reconciled with standard models of thin accretion discs. In this work we compare the predictions of different theoretical models with the {IXPE} data and conclude that the observed polarization properties are compatible with a scenario in which matter accretes onto the black hole through a thin disc, covered by a partially-ionized atmosphere flowing away at mildly relativistic velocities.

First results from a next-generation off-plane X-ray diffraction grating

Future NASA X-ray spectroscopy missions will require high throughput, high resolution grating spectrometers. Off-plane reflection gratings are capable of meeting the performance requirements needed to realize the scientific goals of these missions. We have identified a novel grating fabrication method that utilizes common lithographic and microfabrication techniques to produce the high fidelity groove profile necessary to achieve this performance. Application of this process has produced an initial pre-master that exhibits a radial (variable line spacing along the groove dimension), high density (>6000 grooves/mm), laminar profile. This pre-master has been tested for diffraction efficiency at the BESSY II synchrotron light facility and diffracts up to 55% of incident light into usable spectral orders. Furthermore, tests of spectral resolving power show that these gratings are capable of obtaining resolutions well above 1300 ($λ/Δλ$) with limitations due to the test apparatus, not the gratings. Obtaining these results has provided confidence that this fabrication process is capable of producing off-plane reflection gratings for the next generation of X-ray observatories.

Gauge Equivalence and Inverse Scattering for Aharonov-Bohm Effect

We consider the Aharonov-Bohm effect for the Schroedinger operator and the related inverse problem in an exterior domain the 2-dim. Euclidean space with Dirichlet boundary condition. We study the structure and asymptotics of generalized eigenfunctions and show that the scattering operator determines the domain and the Hamiltonian up to Gauge equivalence under the equal flux condition. We also show that the flux is determined by the scattering operator if the obstacle is convex.
