CP and T Violation in Neutrino Oscillations

In this short lecture, we discuss some basic phenomenological aspects of CP and T violation in neutrino oscillation. Using CP/T trajectory diagrams in the bi-probability space, we try to sketch out some essential features of the interplay between the effect of CP/T violating phase and that of the matter in neutrino oscillation.

The Complementarity of Eastern and Western Hemisphere Long-Baseline Neutrino Oscillation Experiments

We present a general formalism for extracting information on the fundamental parameters associated with neutrino masses and mixings from two or more long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. This formalism is then applied to the current most likely experiments using neutrino beams from the Japan Hadron Facility (JHF) and Fermilab's NuMI beamline. Different combinations of muon neutrino or muon anti-neutrino running are considered. To extract the type of neutrino mass hierarchy we make use of the matter effect. Contrary to naive expectation, we find that both beams using neutrinos is more suitable for determining the hierarchy provided that the neutrino energy divided by baseline ($E/L$) for NuMI is smaller than or equal to that of JHF. Whereas to determine the small mixing angle, $θ_{13}$, and the CP or T violating phase $δ$, one neutrino and the other anti-neutrino is most suitable. We make extensive use of bi-probability diagrams for both understanding and extracting the physics involved in such comparisons.

Parameter Degeneracies in Neutrino Oscillation Measurement of Leptonic CP and T Violation

The measurement of the mixing angle θ_{13}, sign of Δm^2_{13} and the CP or T violating phase δis fraught with ambiguities in neutrino oscillation. In this paper we give an analytic treatment of the paramater degeneracies associated with measuring the ν_μ-> ν_e probability and its CP and/or T conjugates. For CP violation, we give explicit solutions to allow us to obtain the regions where there exist two-fold and four-fold degeneracies. We calculate the fractional differences, Δθ/ \barθ, between the allowed solutions which may be used to compare with the expected sensitivities of the experiments. For T violation we show that there is always a complete degeneracy between solutions with positive and negative Δm^2_{13} which arises due to a symmetry and cannot be removed by observing one neutrino oscillation probability and its T conjugate. Thus, there is always a four fold parameter degeneracy apart from exceptional points. Explicit solutions are also given and the fractional differences are computed. The bi-probability CP/T trajectory diagrams are extensively used to illuminate the nature of the degeneracies.

CP and T Trajectory Diagrams for a Unified Graphical Representation of Neutrino Oscillations

Recently the CP trajectory diagram was introduced to demonstrate the difference between the intrinsic CP violating effects to those induced by matter for neutrino oscillation. In this paper we introduce the T trajectory diagram. In these diagrams the probability for a given oscillation process is plotted versus the probability for the CP- or the T-conjugate processes, which forms an ellipse as the CP or T violating phase is varied. Since the CP and the T conjugate processes are related by CPT symmetry, even in the presence of matter, these two trajectory diagrams are closely related with each other and form a unified description of neutrino oscillations in matter.

P Pbar to T Tbar H: A Discovery mode for the Higgs boson at the Tevatron

The production of a Standard Model Higgs boson in association with a top quark pair at the upcoming high luminosity run (15 inverse fb integrated luminosity) of the Fermilab Tevatron (root s = 2.0 TeV) is revisited. For Higgs masses below 140 GeV we demonstrate that the production cross section times branching ratio for H->B Bbar decays yields a significant number of events and that this mode is competitive with and complementary to the searches using P Pbar -> WH, ZH associated production. For higher mass Higgs bosons the H -> W+ W- decays are more difficult but have the potential to provide a few spectacular events.

Top Polarization at a mu+mu- Collider

The top quark pairs produced at a polarized muon collider are in a (nearly) pure spin configuration. This result holds for all center-of-mass energies, and is insensitive to the next-to-leading order QCD radiative corrections. The decay products of a polarized top quark show strong angular correlations. We describe an interesting interference effect between the left-handed and longitudinally polarized W bosons in top quark decay. This effect is easily observable in the angular distribution of the charged lepton with respect to the beam axis.

Single Top Quark Production at the LHC: Understanding Spin

We show that the single top quarks produced in the Wg-fusion channel at a proton-proton collider at a center-of-mass energy sqrt{s}=14 TeV posses a high degree of polarization in terms of a spin basis which decomposes the top quark spin in its rest frame along the direction of the spectator jet. A second useful spin basis is the eta-beamline basis, which decomposes the top quark spin along one of the two beam directions, depending on which hemisphere contains the spectator jet. We elucidate the interplay between the two- and three-body final states contributing to this production cross section in the context of determining the spin decomposition of the top quarks, and argue that the zero momentum frame helicity is undefined. We show that the usefulness of the spectator and eta-beamline spin bases is not adversely affected by the cuts required to separate the Wg-fusion signal from the background.

QCD Corrections to Spin Correlations in Top Quark Production at Lepton Colliders

Spin correlations, using a generic spin basis, are investigated to leading order in QCD for top quark production at lepton colliders. Even though, these radiative corrections induce an anomalous gamma/Z magnetic moment for the top quarks and allow for single, real gluon emission, their effects on the top quark spin orientation are very small. The final results are that the top (or anti-top) quarks are produced in an essentially unique spin configuration in polarized lepton collisions even after including the O(alpha_{s}) QCD corrections.

Why e+ e- to T Tbar is Different

Unlike other examples of fermion pair production in e+ e- collisions, we show that top-quark pairs are produced in an essentially unique spin configuration in polarized e+ e- colliders at all energies. Since the directions of the electroweak decay products of polarized top-quarks are strongly correlated to the top-quark spin axis, this unique spin configuration leads to a distinctive topology for top-quark pair events which can be used to constrain anomalous couplings to the top-quark. A significant interference effect between the longitudinal and transverse W-bosons in the decay of polarized top-quarks is also discussed.

Deconstructing Angular Correlations in ZH, ZZ, and WW Production at LEP2

We apply a generalized spin-basis analysis to associated Higgs production and gauge boson pair production at LEP. This framework allows us to identify a choice of spin axes for the processes e+ e- --> ZH,ZZ which leads to strikingly different correlations among the decay products, even well above threshold. This spin basis optimizes the difference in the angular correlations for these two processes. In contrast, the same distributions display little contrast when the helicity basis is used. We also apply this technique to the case of W boson pair production.

Top Quark Physics at a Polarized Muon Collider

Top quark pair production is presented at a polarized Muon Collider above the threshold region. The off-diagonal spin basis is the natural basis for this discussion as the top quark pairs are produced in an essentially unique spin configuration for 100% polarization. Modest polarization, say 30%, can lead to 90% of all top quark pair events being in one spin configuration. This will lead to sensitive tests on anomalous top quark couplings.

Top Pair Production in e^+ e^- and gamma gamma Processes

We analyze spin correlations between top quark and anti-top quark produced at polarized e^+ e^- and gamma gamma colliders. We consider a generic spin basis to find a strong spin correlation. Optimal spin decompositions for top quark pair are presented for e^+ e^- and gamma gamma colliders. We show the cross-section in these bases and discuss the characteristics of results.

Maximizing Spin Correlations in Top Quark Pair Production at the Tevatron

A comparison is made between the off-diagonal and helicity spin bases for top quark pair production at the FNAL Tevatron. In the off-diagonal basis, 92% of the top quark pairs are in the spin configuration up-down plus down-up, whereas in the helicity basis only 70% are left-right plus right-left. The off-diagonal basis maximizes the spin asymmetry and hence the measured angular correlations between the decay products, which are more than twice as big in this basis as compared to the helicity basis. In addition, for the process q qbar --> t tbar, we give a very simple analytic expression for the matrix element squared which includes all spin correlations between the production and subsequent decay of the top quarks.

Improved Spin Basis for Angular Correlation Studies in Single Top Quark Production at the Tevatron

We show in single top quark production that the spin of the top quark is correlated with the direction of the d-type quark in the event. For single top production in the W* channel, the d-type quark comes dominantly from the antiproton at the Tevatron, whereas for the W-gluon fusion channel the spectator jet is the d-type quark the majority of the time at this machine. Our results are that 98% of the top quarks from the W* process have their spins in the antiproton direction, and 96% of the top quarks in the W-gluon fusion process have their spins in the spectator jet direction. We also compare with the more traditional, but less effective, helicity basis. The direction of the top quark spin is reflected in angular correlations in its decay products.

Spin Correlations in Top-Quark Pair Production at $e^+e^-$ Colliders

We show that top-quark pairs are produced in an essentially unique spin configuration in polarized $e^+e^-$ colliders at all energies above the threshold region. Since the directions of the electroweak decay products of polarized top-quarks are strongly correlated to the top-quark spin axis, this unique spin configuration leads to a distinctive topology for top-quark pair events which can be used to constrain anomalous couplings to the top-quark. A significant interference effect between the {\it longitudinal} and {\it transverse} W-bosons in the decay of polarized top-quarks is also discussed. These results are obtained at leading order in perturbation theory but radiative corrections are expected to be small.
