Test configurations, large deviations and geodesic rays on toric varieties

This article contains a detailed study, in the toric case, of the test configuration geodesic rays defined by Phong-Sturm. We show that the `Bergman approximations' of Phong-Sturm converge in C^1 to the geodesic ray and that the geodesic ray itself is C^{1,1} and no better. The \kahler metrics associated to the geodesic ray of potentials are discontinuous across certain hypersurfaces and are degenerate on certain open sets. A novelty in the analysis is the connection between Bergman metrics, Bergman kernels and the theory of large deviations.

Number variance of random zeros on complex manifolds, II: smooth statistics

We consider the zero sets $Z_N$ of systems of $m$ random polynomials of degree $N$ in $m$ complex variables, and we give asymptotic formulas for the random variables given by summing a smooth test function over $Z_N$. Our asymptotic formulas show that the variances for these smooth statistics have the growth $N^{m-2}$. We also prove analogues for the integrals of smooth test forms over the subvarieties defined by $k<m$ random polynomials. Such linear statistics of random zero sets are smooth analogues of the random variables given by counting the number of zeros in an open set, which we proved elsewhere to have variances of order $N^{m-1/2}$. We use the variance asymptotics and off-diagonal estimates of Szego kernels to extend an asymptotic normality result of Sodin-Tsirelson to the case of smooth linear statistics for zero sets of codimension one in any dimension $m$.

Counting Nodal Lines Which Touch the Boundary of an Analytic Domain

We consider the zeros on the boundary $\partial Ω$ of a Neumann eigenfunction $ϕ_λ$ of a real analytic plane domain $Ω$. We prove that the number of its boundary zeros is $O (λ)$ where $-Δϕ_λ = λ^2 ϕ_λ$. We also prove that the number of boundary critical points of either a Neumann or Dirichlet eigenfunction is $O(λ)$. It follows that the number of nodal lines of $ϕ_λ$ (components of the nodal set) which touch the boundary is of order $λ$. This upper bound is of the same order of magnitude as the length of the total nodal line, but is the square root of the Courant bound on the number of nodal components in the interior. More generally, the results are proved for piecewise analytic domains.

Bernstein polynomials, Bergman kernels and toric Kähler varieties

It does not seem to have been observed previously that the classical Bernstein polynomials $B_N(f)(x)$ are closely related to the Bergman-Szego kernels $Π_N$ for the Fubini-Study metric on $\CP^1$: $B_N(f)(x)$ is the Berezin symbol of the Toeplitz operator $Π_N f(N^{-1} D_θ)$. The relation suggests a generalization of Bernstein polynomials to any toric Kahler variety and Delzant polytope $P$. When $f$ is smooth, $B_N(f)(x)$ admits a complete asymptotic expansion. Integrating it over $P$ gives a complete asymptotic expansion for Dedekind-Riemann sums of smooth functions over lattice points in $N P$ related to Euler-MacLaurin sum formulae of Guillemin-Sternberg and others.

Convergence of Bergman geodesics on CP^1

The space of positively curved hermitian metrics on a positive holomorphic line bundle over a compact complex manifold is an infinite-dimensional symmetric space. It is shown by Phong and Sturm that geodesics in this space can be uniformly approximated by geodesics in the finite dimensional spaces of Bergman metrics. We prove a stronger C^2-approximation in the special case of toric (i.e. S^1-invariant) metrics on CP^1.

Patterson-Sullivan distributions and quantum ergodicity

We relate two types of phase space distributions associated to eigenfunctions $ϕ_{ir_j}$ of the Laplacian on a compact hyperbolic surface $X_Γ$: (1) Wigner distributions $\int_{S^*\X} a dW_{ir_j}=< Op(a)ϕ_{ir_j}, ϕ_{ir_j}>_{L^2(\X)}$, which arise in quantum chaos. They are invariant under the wave group. (2) Patterson-Sullivan distributions $PS_{ir_j}$, which are the residues of the dynamical zeta-functions $\lcal(s; a): = \sum_γ\frac{e^{-sL_γ}}{1-e^{-L_γ}} \int_{γ_0} a$ (where the sum runs over closed geodesics) at the poles $s = {1/2} + ir_j$. They are invariant under the geodesic flow. We prove that these distributions (when suitably normalized) are asymptotically equal as $r_j \to \infty$. We also give exact relations between them. This correspondence gives a new relation between classical and quantum dynamics on a hyperbolic surface, and consequently a formulation of quantum ergodicity in terms of classical ergodic theory.

Number variance of random zeros

The main results of this article are asymptotic formulas for the variance of the number of zeros of a Gaussian random polynomial of degree $N$ in an open set $U \subset C$ as the degree $N \to \infty$, and more generally for the zeros of random holomorphic sections of high powers of any positive line bundle over any Riemann surface. The formulas were conjectured in special cases by Forrester and Honner. In higher dimensions, we give similar formulas for the variance of the volume inside a domain $U$ of the zero hypersurface of a random holomorphic section of a high power of a positive line bundle over any compact Kähler manifold. These results generalize the variance asymptotics of Sodin and Tsirelson for special model ensembles of chaotic analytic functions in one variable to any ample line bundle and Riemann surface. We also combine our methods with those of Sodin-Tsirelson to generalize their asymptotic normality results for smoothed number statistics.

Critical points and supersymmetric vacua, II: Asymptotics and extremal metrics

Motivated by the vacuum selection problem of string/M theory, we study a new geometric invariant of a positive Hermitian line bundle $(L, h)\to M$ over a compact Kähler manifold: the expected distribution of critical points of a Gaussian random holomorphic section $s \in H^0(M, L)$ with respect to the Chern connection $\nabla_h$. It is a measure on $M$ whose total mass is the average number $\mathcal{N}^{crit}_h$ of critical points of a random holomorphic section. We are interested in the metric dependence of $\mathcal{N}^{crit}_h$, especially metrics $h$ which minimize $\mathcal{N}^{crit}_h$. We concentrate on the asymptotic minimization problem for the sequence of tensor powers $(L^N, h^N)\to M$ of the line bundle and their critical point densities $\mathcal{K}^{crit}_{N,h}(z)$. We prove that $\mathcal{K}^{crit}_{N,h}(z)$ has a complete asymptotic expansion in $N$ whose coefficients are curvature invariants of $h$. The first two terms in the expansion of $\mathcal{N}^{crit}_{N,h}$ are topological invariants of $(L, M)$. The third term is a topological invariant plus a constant $β_2(m)$ (depending only on the dimension $m$ of $M$) times the Calabi functional $\int_M ρ^2 dV_h$, where $ρ$ is the scalar curvature of the Kähler metric $ω_h:=\frac i2 Θ_h$. We give an integral formula for $β_2(m)$ and show, by a computer assisted calculation, that $β_2(m)>0$ for $m\leq 5$, hence that $\mathcal{N}^{crit}_{N,h}$ is asymptotically minimized by the Calabi extremal metric (when one exists). We conjecture that $β_2(m)>0$ in all dimensions, i.e. the Calabi extremal metric is always the asymptotic minimizer.

Critical points and supersymmetric vacua, III: String/M models

A fundamental problem in contemporary string/M theory is to count the number of inequivalent vacua satisfying constraints in a string theory model. This article contains the first rigorous results on the number and distribution of supersymmetric vacua of type IIb string theories compactified on a Calabi-Yau 3-fold $X$ with flux. In particular, complete proofs of the counting formulas in Ashok-Douglas and Denef-Douglas are given, together with van der Corput style remainder estimates. We also give evidence that the number of vacua satisfying the tadpole constraint in regions of bounded curvature in moduli space is of exponential growth in $b_3(X)$.

Complex zeros of real ergodic eigenfunctions

We determine the limit distribution (as $λ\to \infty$) of complex zeros for holomorphic continuations $ϕ_λ^{\C}$ to Grauert tubes of real eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on a real analytic compact Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$ with ergodic geodesic flow. If $\{ϕ_{j_k} \}$ is an ergodic sequence of eigenfunctions, we prove the weak limit formula $\frac{1}{λ_j} [Z_{ϕ_{j_k}^{\C}}] \to \frac{i}π \bar{\partial} {\partial} |ξ|_g$, where $ [Z_{ϕ_{j_k}^{\C}}]$ is the current of integration over the complex zeros and where $\bar{\partial}$ is with respect to the adapted complex structure of Lempert-Szöke and Guillemin-Stenzel.

Weyl's law and quantum ergodicity for maps with divided phase space

For a general class of unitary quantum maps, whose underlying classical phase space is divided into several invariant domains of positive measure, we establish analogues of Weyl's law for the distribution of eigenphases. If the map has one ergodic component, and is periodic on the remaining domains, we prove the Schnirelman-Zelditch-Colin de Verdiere Theorem on the equidistribution of eigenfunctions with respect to the ergodic component of the classical map (quantum ergodicity). We apply our main theorems to quantised linked twist maps on the torus. In the Appendix, S. Zelditch connects these studies to some earlier results on `pimpled spheres' in the setting of Riemannian manifolds. The common feature is a divided phase space with a periodic component.

Critical points and supersymmetric vacua

Supersymmetric vacua (`universes') of string/M theory may be identified with certain critical points of a holomorphic section (the `superpotential') of a Hermitian holomorphic line bundle over a complex manifold. An important physical problem is to determine how many vacua there are and how they are distributed. The present paper initiates the study of the statistics of critical points $\nabla s = 0$ of Gaussian random holomorphic sections with respect to a connection $\nabla$. Even the expected number of critical points depends on the curvature of $\nabla$. The principal results give formulas for the expected density and number of critical points of Gaussian random sections relative to $\nabla$ in a variety of settings. The results are particularly concrete for Riemann surfaces. Analogous results on the density of critical points of fixed Morse index are given.

Survey of the inverse spectral problem

This is a survey of the inverse spectral problem on (mainly compact) Riemannian manifolds, with or without boundary. The emphasis is on wave invariants: on how wave invariants have been calculated and how they have been applied to concrete inverse spectral problems.

Quantum ergodicity of boundary values of eigenfunctions

Suppose that Omega is a bounded, piecewise smooth Euclidean domain. We prove that the boundary values (Cauchy data) of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on Omega with various boundary conditions are quantum ergodic if the classical billiard map (on the ball bundle of the boundary of Omega) is ergodic. Our proof is based on the classical observation that the boundary value of an interior eigenfunction is an eigenfunction of an operator F_h on the boundary of Omega, where h^{-2} is equal to the eigenvalue. In the case of the Neumann boundary condition, F_h is the boundary integral operator induced by the double layer potential. We show that F_h is a semiclassical Fourier integral operator quantizing the billiard map plus a `small' remainder. We then use the quantum dyanmics defined by F_h at the boundary to prove the result, much as the quantum dynamics generated by the wave group were exploited in the work of Zelditch-Zworski (1996). Novelties include the facts that F_h is not unitary and (consequently) the boundary values are equidistributed by measures which are not invariant under the billiard map and which depend on the boundary conditions.

Quantum maps and automorphisms

What does it mean to quantize a symplectic map $χ$? In deformation quantization, it means to construct an automorphism of the $*$ algebra associated to $χ$. In quantum chaos it means to construct unitary operators $U_χ$ such that $A \to U_χ A U_χ^*$ defines an automorphism of the algebra of observables. In geometric quantization and in PDE it means to construct a unitary Fourier integral (or Toeplitz) operator associated to the graph of $χ$. We compare the definitions in the setting of Kahler manifolds $(M, g)$. The main result is a Toeplitz analogue of the Duistermaat-Singer theorem on automorphisms of the pseudo-differential algebra, and its extension to non-simply connected phase spaces, which often occur in applications (quantized symplectic torus automorphisms.

Billiards and boundary traces of eigenfunctions

This is a report for the 2003 Forges Les Eaux PDE conference on recent results with A. Hassell on quantum ergodicity of boundary traces of eigenfunctions on domains with ergodic billiards, and of work in progress with Hassell and Sogge on norms of boundary traces. Related work by Burq, Grieser and Smith-Sogge is also discussed.

Quantum unique ergodicity

This short note proves that a Laplacian cannot be quantum uniquely ergodic if it possesses a quasimode of order zero which (i) has a singular limit, and (ii) is a linear combination of a uniformly bounded number of eigenfunctions (modulo an o(1) error). Bouncing ball quasimodes of the stadium are believed to have this property (E.J. Heller et al) and so are analogous quasimodes recently constructed by H. Donnelly on certain non-positively curved surfaces. The main ingredient is the proof that all sequences of off-diagonal matrix elements of QUE systems with vanishing spectral gaps tend to zero.
