Critical gate distance for Wigner crystallization in the two-dimensional electron gas

We report on the properties of the two-dimensional electron gas in a dual-gate geometry, using quantum Monte Carlo methods to obtain aspects of the phase diagram as a function of electron density and gate distance. We identify the critical gate distance below which the Wigner crystal phase disappears. For larger gate distances, the system undergoes a re-entrant transition from crystal to liquid at sufficiently low density. We also present preliminary evidence for a fully polarized ferromagnetic liquid state at low electron density and intermediate gate distances. The quantum Monte Carlo results are compared with simpler approximate methods, which are shown to be semi-quantitatively reliable for determining key features of the phase diagram. These methods are then used to obtain the phase boundary between the Wigner crystal and liquid in the single-gate geometry.

Time-reversal symmetry breaking, collective modes, and Raman spectrum in pair-density-wave states

Inspired by empirical evidence of the existence of pair-density-wave (PDW) order in certain underdoped cuprates, we investigate the collective modes in systems with unidirectional PDW order with momenta $\pm {Q}$ and a $d$-wave form-factor with special focus on the amplitude (Higgs) modes. In the pure PDW state, there are two overdamped Higgs modes. We show that a phase with co-existing PDW and uniform ($d$-wave) superconducting (SC) order, PDW/SC, spontaneously breaks time-reversal symmetry - and thus is distinct from a simpler phase, SC/CDW, with coexisting SC and charge-density-wave (CDW) order. The PDW/SC phase exhibits three Higgs modes, one of which is sharply peaked and is predominantly a PDW fluctuation, symmetric between ${Q}$ and -${Q}$, whose damping rate is strongly reduced by SC. This sharp mode should be visible in Raman experiments.

Effect of disorder on the strain-tuned charge density wave multicriticality in Pd$_x$ErTe$_3$

We explore, through a combination of x-ray diffraction and elastoresistivity measurements, the effect of disorder on the strain-tuned charge density wave and associated multicriticality in Pd$_x$ErTe$_3$ (x = 0, 0.01, 0.02 and 0.026). We focus particularly on the behavior near the strain-tuned bicritical point that occurs in pristine ErTe$_3$ (x=0). Our study reveals that while Pd intercalation somewhat broadens the signatures of the CDW phase transitions, the line of first-order transitions at which the CDW reorients as a function of applied strain persists in the presence of disorder and still seemingly terminates at a critical point. The critical point occurs at a lower temperature and a lower strain compared to pristine ErTe$_3$. Similarly, the nematic elastoresistance of Pd$_x$ErTe$_3$, though suppressed in magnitude and broadened relative to that of ErTe$_3$, has a markedly more symmetric response around the critical point. These observations point to disorder driving a reduction in the system's electronic orthorhombicity even while the material remains irrevocably orthorhombic due to the presence of a glide plane in the crystal structure. Disorder, it would appear, reinforces the emergence of a "pseudo-tetragonal" electronic response in this fundamentally orthorhombic material.

Phase sensitive information from a planar Josephson junction

Josephson tunneling across a planar junction generally depends on the relative twist angle, $θ$, between the two layers. However, if under a discrete rotation, the order parameter in one layer is odd and the other is even (as, e.g., for a $s$-wave to $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave junction under a $π/2$ rotation) then the bulk Josephson current vanishes for all $θ$. Even in this case, we show that for a finite junction, the Josephson current, $J$, has a nonzero edge contribution that depends on $θ$ and the orientation of the junction edges in ways that can serve as an unambiguous probe of the order parameter symmetry of any time-reversal preserving system (including multiband systems and those in which spin-orbit coupling is significant). We also analyze the microscopic considerations that determine the magnitude of $J$.

Hydride superconductivity: here to stay

The field of hydride superconductivity has recently been mired in a controversy that might divert attention from the question of central importance: do hydrides support genuine superconductivity or not? We examine some key papers from the field, and conclude that hydride superconductivity is real.

"Quantum Geometric Nesting" and Solvable Model Flat-Band Systems

We introduce the concept of "quantum geometric nesting'' (QGN) to characterize the idealized ordering tendencies of certain flat-band systems implicit in the geometric structure of the flat-band subspace. Perfect QGN implies the existence of an infinite class of local interactions that can be explicitly constructed and give rise to solvable ground states with various forms of possible fermion bi-linear order, including flavor ferromagnetism, density waves, and superconductivity. For the ideal Hamiltonians constructed in this way, we show that certain aspects of the low-energy spectrum can also be exactly computed including, in the superconducting case, the phase stiffness. Examples of perfect QGN include flat bands with certain symmetries (e.g. chiral or time-reversal), and non-symmetry-related cases exemplified with an engineered model for pair-density-wave. Extending this approach, we obtain exact superconducting ground states with nontrivial pairing symmetry.

"Quantum bipolaron" superconductivity from quadratic electron-phonon coupling

When the electron-phonon coupling is quadratic in the phonon coordinates, electrons can pair to form bipolarons due to phonon zero-point fluctuations, a purely quantum effect. We study superconductivity originating from this pairing mechanism in a minimal model and reveal that, in the strong coupling regime, the critical temperature ($T_c$) is only mildly suppressed by the coupling strength, in stark contrast to the exponential suppression in linearly coupled systems, thus implying higher optimal $T_c$ values. We demonstrate that large coupling constants of this flavor are achieved in known materials such as perovskites, and discuss strategies to realize such superconductivity using superlattices.

Theory of Coulomb driven nematicity in a multi-valley two-dimensional electron gas

The properties of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a semiconductor host with two valleys related by an underlying $C_4$ rotational symmetry are studied using Hartree-Fock (HF) and various other many-body approaches. A familiar artifact of the HF approach is a degeneracy between the valley polarized - ``Ising nematic'' - and spin polarized - ferromagnetic - phases, which is inconsistent with recent variational Monte Carlo (VMC) results. Correlation effects, computed either within the random phase approximation (RPA) or the T-matrix approximation, enhance the valley susceptibility relative to the spin susceptibility. Extrapolating the results to finite interaction strength, we find a direct first-order transition from a symmetry-unbroken state to a spin unpolarized Ising nematic fluid with full valley polarization, in qualitative agreement with VMC. The RPA results are also reminiscent of experiments on the corresponding 2DEG in AlAs heterostructures.

Quantum spin liquid from electron-phonon coupling

A quantum spin liquid (QSL) is an exotic insulating phase with emergent gauge fields and fractionalized excitations. However, the unambiguous demonstration of the existence of a QSL in a "non-engineered" microscopic model (or in any material) remains challenging. Here, using numerically-exact sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we show that a QSL arises in a non-engineered electron-phonon model. Specifically, we investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the bond Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model on a 2D triangular lattice at half filling (one electron per site) which we show includes a QSL phase which is fully gapped, exhibits no symmetry-breaking order, and supports deconfined fractionalized holon excitations. This suggests new routes for finding QSLs in realistic materials and high-$T_c$ superconductivity by lightly doping them.

Importance of electron-phonon coupling near the electron-liquid to Wigner-crystal transition in two-dimensional atomically thin materials

We study the effect of electron-phonon coupling on the location of the Fermi Liquid to Wigner Crystal transition in the two-dimensional electron gas realized in various material platforms. Based on dimensional estimates of the relevant parameters, we conclude that (as conventionally assumed) phonons are negligible in traditional semiconductor quantum well systems, but likely play a significant role in various recently synthesized atomically thin two-dimensional materials.

Theory of an infinitely anisotropic phase of a two-dimensional superconductor

We propose a simple model of a two-dimensional ``locally smectic superconductor'' that exhibits power-law non-linear I-V characteristics with different powers for current applied in two orthogonal directions. We discuss the potential relevance of this model to recent experimental findings on interfacial superconductivity in EuO/KTaO$_3$(110) (Nat. Phys. 20, 957 (2024)), where the apparent critical temperature ($T_c$) has been shown experimentally to depend on the current direction.

Solitons with irrational charge in a one-dimensional quantum ferroelectric

We use analytic (mean-field) and density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods to study a simplified one-dimensional version of the SSH-Holstein model of electron-phonon interactions with one electron per site (half filling) where, as a function of the ratio of the two couplings, three distinct insulating phases arise - a site-centered charge-density-wave (CDW), a bond-centered bond-density-wave (BDW), and an intermediate ferroelectric (inversion-symmetry breaking) phase with coexisting CDW and BDW order. In the intermediate phase our DMRG results establish the existence of point-like soliton excitations with irrational charge (that depends on a ratio of coupling constants) and either spin 1/2 or spin 0, and a surprisingly light effective mass.

Emergent Tetragonality in a Fundamentally Orthorhombic Material

Symmetry plays a key role in determining the physical properties of materials. By Neumann's principle, the properties of a material are invariant under the symmetry operations of the space group to which the material belongs. Continuous phase transitions are associated with a spontaneous reduction in symmetry. (For example, the onset of ferromagnetism spontaneously breaks time reversal symmetry.) Much less common are examples where proximity to a continuous phase transition leads to an increase in symmetry. Here, we find an emergent tetragonal symmetry close to an apparent charge density wave (CDW) bicritical point in a fundamentally orthorhombic material, ErTe$_3$, for which the CDW phase transitions are tuned via anisotropic strain. The underlying structure of the material remains orthorhombic for all applied strains, including at the bicritical point, due to a glide plane symmetry in the crystal structure. Nevertheless, the observation of a divergence in the anisotropy of the in-plane elastoresistivity reveals an emergent electronic tetragonality near the bicritical point.

Elastocaloric evidence for a multicomponent superconductor stabilized within the nematic state in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$

The iron-based high-$T_c$ superconductors exhibit rich phase diagrams with intertwined phases, including magnetism, nematicity and superconductivity. The superconducting $T_c$ in many of these materials is maximized in the regime of strong nematic fluctuations, making the role of nematicity in influencing the superconductivity a topic of intense research. Here, we use the AC elastocaloric effect (ECE) to map out the phase diagram of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ near optimal doping. The ECE signature at $T_c$ on the overdoped side, where superconductivity condenses without any nematic order, is quantitatively consistent with other thermodynamic probes that indicate a single-component superconducting state. In contrast, on the slightly underdoped side, where superconductivity condenses within the nematic phase, ECE reveals a second thermodynamic transition proximate to and below $T_c$. We rule out magnetism and re-entrant tetragonality as the origin of this transition, and find that our observations strongly suggest a phase transition into a multicomponent superconducting state. This implies the existence of a sub-dominant pairing instability that competes strongly with the dominant $s^\pm$ instability. Our results thus motivate a re-examination of the pairing state and its interplay with nematicity in this extensively studied iron-based superconductor, while also demonstrating the power of ECE in uncovering strain-tuned phase diagrams of quantum materials.

Anomalous Landau level gaps near magnetic transitions in monolayer WSe$_2$

First-order phase transitions produce abrupt changes to the character of both ground and excited electronic states. Here we conduct electronic compressibility measurements to map the spin phase diagram and Landau level (LL) energies of monolayer WSe$_2$ in a magnetic field. We resolve a sequence of first-order phase transitions between completely spin-polarized LLs and states with LLs of both spins. Unexpectedly, the LL gaps are roughly constant over a wide range of magnetic fields below the transitions, which we show reflects a preference for opposite spin excitations of the spin-polarized ground state. These transitions also extend into compressible regimes, with a sawtooth boundary between full and partial spin polarization. We link these observations to the important influence of LL filling on the exchange energy beyond a smooth density-dependent contribution. Our results show that WSe$_2$ realizes a unique hierarchy of energy scales where such effects induce re-entrant magnetic phase transitions tuned by density and magnetic field.

Thermal transport measurements of the charge density wave transition in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$

We study thermalization and thermal transport in single crystals of CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ through the CDW transition by directly measuring thermal diffusivity ($D$), thermal conductivity ($κ$), resistivity ($ρ$), and specific heat ($c$). Commensurate with previous reports, we observe a sharp, narrow anomaly in specific heat associated with a first order transition that results in a CDW state below $\sim94$ K. While a corresponding sharp anomaly in thermal diffusivity is also observed, resistivity and thermal conductivity only exhibit small steps at the transition, where the feature is sharp for resistivity and broader for thermal conductivity. Scrutinizing the thermal Einstein relation $κ=cD$, we find that this relation is satisfied in the entire temperature range, except in a narrow range around the transition. The Wiedemann-Franz law seems to work outside the critical region as well. Below the transition and persisting below the two-phase regime we find strong resemblance between the resistivity anomaly and the specific heat, which may point to a secondary electronic order parameter that emerges continuously below the transition.

Anomalous superfluid density in a disordered charge density wave material: Pd-intercalated ErTe$_3$

We image local superfluid density in single crystals of Pd-intercalated ErTe$_3$ below the superconducting critical temperature, $T_c$, well below the onset temperature, $T_{CDW}$, of (disordered) charge-density-wave order. We find no detectable inhomogeneities. We observe a rapid increase of the superfluid density below $T_c$, deviating from the behavior expected in conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer, and show that the temperature dependence is qualitatively consistent with a combination of quantum and thermal phase fluctuations.

Dynamical defects in a two-dimensional Wigner crystal: self-doping and kinetic magnetism

We study the quantum dynamics of interstitials and vacancies in a two-dimensional Wigner crystal (WC) using a semi-classical instanton method that is asymptotically exact at low density, i.e., in the $r_s\to \infty$ limit. The dynamics of these point defects mediates magnetism with much higher energy scales than the exchange energies of the pure WC. Via exact diagonalization of the derived effective Hamiltonians in the single-defect sectors, we find the dynamical corrections to the defect energies. The resulting expression for the interstitial (vacancy) energy extrapolates to 0 at $r_s = r_{\rm mit} \approx 70$ ($r_s \approx 30$), suggestive of a self-doping instability to a partially melted WC for some range of $r_s$ below $r_{\rm mit}$. We thus propose a "metallic electron crystal'' phase of the two-dimensional electron gas at intermediate densities between a low density insulating WC and a high density Fermi fluid.
