Heuristic bounds on superconductivity and how to exceed them

What limits the value of the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) is a question of great fundamental and practical importance. Various heuristic upper bounds on $T_c$ have been proposed, expressed as fractions of the Fermi temperature, $T_F$, the zero-temperature superfluid stiffness, $ρ_s(0)$, or a characteristic Debye frequency, $ω_0$. We show that while these bounds are physically motivated and are certainly useful in many relevant situations, none of them serve as a fundamental bound on $T_c$. To demonstrate this, we provide explicit models where $T_c/T_F$ (with an appropriately defined $T_F$), $T_c/ρ_s(0)$, and $T_c/ω_0$ are unbounded.

Generic character of charge and spin density waves in superconducting cuprates

Understanding the nature of charge density waves (CDW) in cuprate superconductors has been complicated by material specific differences. A striking example is the opposite doping dependence of the CDW ordering wavevector in La-based and Y-based compounds, the two families where charge ordering is strongest and best characterized. Here we report a combined resonant soft X-ray scattering (RSXS) and neutron scattering study of charge and spin density waves in isotopically enriched La$_{1.8-x}$ Eu$_{0.2}$ Sr$_{x}$ CuO$_{4}$ over a range of doping $0.07 \leq x \leq 0.20$. For all dopings studied by RSXS, we find that the CDW amplitude is approximately temperature-independent and develops well above experimentally accessible temperatures. Surprisingly, the CDW ordering wavevector shows a non-monotonic temperature dependence, with a sudden change occurring at temperatures near the SDW onset temperature. We describe this behavior with a Landau-Ginzburg theory for an incommensurate CDW in a metallic system with a finite charge compressibility and CDW-SDW coupling. Our Landau-Ginzburg analysis suggests that the ordering wavevector at high temperatures decreases with increased doping. This behavior is opposite to the trend at low temperatures and highly reminiscent of the doping dependence seen in YBa$_2$ Cu$_3$ O$_{6+δ}$ , suggesting a common origin of the CDW in hole-doped cuprate superconductors.

Correlated Hofstadter Spectrum and Flavor Phase Diagram in Magic Angle Graphene

In magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG), the moiré superlattice potential gives rise to narrow electronic bands1 which support a multitude of many-body quantum phases. Further richness arises in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field, where the interplay between moiré and magnetic length scales leads to fractal Hofstadter subbands. In this strongly correlated Hofstadter platform, multiple experiments have identified gapped topological and correlated states, but little is known about the phase transitions between them in the intervening compressible regimes. Here, using a scanning single-electron transistor microscope to measure local electronic compressibility, we simultaneously unveil novel sequences of broken-symmetry Chern insulators (CIs) and resolve sharp phase transitions between competing states with different topological quantum numbers and spin/valley flavor occupations. Our measurements provide a complete experimental mapping of the energy spectrum and thermodynamic phase diagram of interacting Hofstadter subbands in MATBG. In addition, we observe full lifting of the degeneracy of the zeroth Landau levels (zLLs) together with level crossings, indicating moiré valley splitting. We propose a unified flavor polarization mechanism to understand the intricate interplay of topology, interactions, and symmetry breaking as a function of density and applied magnetic field in this system.

Superconductor to metal transition in overdoped cuprates

We present a theoretical framework for understanding the behavior of the normal and superconducting states of overdoped cuprate high temperature superconductors in the vicinity of the doping-tuned quantum superconductor-to-metal transition. The key ingredients on which we focus are d-wave pairing, a flat antinodal dispersion, and disorder. Even for homogeneous disorder, these lead to effectively granular superconducting correlations and a superconducting transition temperature determined in large part by the superfluid stiffness rather than the pairing scale.

Strain-induced time reversal breaking and half quantum vortices near a putative superconducting tetra-critical point in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$

It has been shown [1] that many seemingly contradictory experimental findings concerning the superconducting state in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ can be accounted for as resulting from the existence of an assumed tetra-critical point at near ambient pressure at which $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $g_{xy(x^2-y^2)}$ superconducting states are degenerate. We perform both a Landau-Ginzburg and a microscopic mean-field analysis of the effect of spatially varying strain on such a state. In the presence of finite $xy$ shear strain, the superconducting state consists of two possible symmetry-related time-reversal symmetry (TRS) preserving states: $d \pm g$. However, at domain walls between two such regions, TRS can be broken, resulting in a $d+ig$ state. More generally, we find that various natural patterns of spatially varying strain induce a rich variety of superconducting textures, including half-quantum fluxoids. These results may resolve some of the apparent inconsistencies between the theoretical proposal and various experimental observations, including the suggestive evidence of half-quantum vortices [2]. Stripe order enhanced superconductivity in the Hubbard model

Unidirectional ("stripe") charge-density-wave order has now been established as a ubiquitous feature in the phase diagram of the cuprate high temperature (HT) superconductors, where it generally competes with superconductivity (SC). None-the-less, on theoretical grounds it has been conjectured that stripe order (or other forms of "optimal" inhomogeneities) may play an essential positive role in the mechanism of HTSC. Here we report density matrix renormalization group studies of the Hubbard model on long 4 and 6 leg cylinders where the hopping matrix elements transverse to the long direction are periodically modulated - mimicing the effect of putative period-2 stripe order. We find even modest amplitude modulations can enhance the long-distance SC correlations by many orders of magnitude, and drive the system into a phase with a substantial spin gap and SC quasi-long-range-order with a Luttinger exponent, $K_{sc} \sim 1$.

The Quantum Hall Effect in the Absence of Disorder

It is widely held that disorder is essential to the existence of a finite interval of magnetic field in which the Hall conductance is quantized, i.e. for the existence of `plateaus' in the quantum Hall effect. Here, we show that the existence of a quasi-particle Wigner crystal results in the persistence of plateaus of finite extent even in the limit of vanishing disorder. Several experimentally detectable features that characterize the behavior in the zero disorder limit are also explored.

High Temperature Superconductivity in a Lightly Doped Quantum Spin Liquid

We have performed density-matrix renormalization group studies of a square lattice $t$-$J$ model with small hole doping, $δ\ll 1$, on long 4 and 6 leg cylinders. We include frustration in the form of a second-neighbor exchange coupling, $J_2 = J_1/2$, such that the undoped ($δ=0$) "parent" state is a quantum spin liquid. In contrast to the relatively short range superconducting (SC) correlations that have been observed in recent studies of the 6-leg cylinder in the absence of frustration, we find power law SC correlations with a Luttinger exponent, $K_{sc} \approx 1$, consistent with a strongly diverging SC susceptibility, $χ\sim T^{-(2-K_{sc})}$ as the temperature $T\to 0$. The spin-spin correlations - as in the undoped state - fall exponentially suggesting that the SC "pairing" correlations evolve smoothly from the insulating parent state.

Discovery of an insulating ferromagnetic phase of electrons in two dimensions

This is a commentary on two papers (PNAS 117 (51) 32244-32250 (2020) and arXiv:2011.06721), which observed a series of ordering transitions in a strongly correlated two-dimensional electron system confined to a AlAs quantum well. We summarize the main discoveries (electron nematicity, insulating ferromagnetism, etc.) of them and speculate on $T-r_s$ phase diagram based on theoretical considerations.

Elastocaloric signature of nematic fluctuations

The elastocaloric effect (ECE) is a thermodynamic quantity relating changes in entropy to changes in strain experienced by a material. As such, ECE measurements can provide valuable information about the entropy landscape proximate to strain-tuned phase transitions. For ordered states that break only point symmetries, bilinear coupling of the order parameter with strain implies that the ECE can also provide a window on fluctuations above the critical temperature, and hence, in principle, can also provide a thermodynamic measure of the associated susceptibility. To demonstrate this, we use the ECE to sensitively reveal the presence of nematic fluctuations in the archetypal Fe-based superconductor Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$. By performing these measurements simultaneously with elastoresistivity in a multimodal fashion, we are able to make a direct and unambiguous comparison of these closely related thermodynamic and transport properties, both of which are sensitive to nematic fluctuations. As a result, we have uncovered an unanticipated doping-dependence of the nemato-elastic coupling and of the magnitude of the scattering of low energy quasi-particles by nematic fluctuations -- while the former weakens, the latter increases dramatically with increasing doping.

Anomalous thermal transport and violation of Wiedemann-Franz law in the critical regime of a charge density wave transition

ErTe$_3$ is studied as a model system to explore thermal transport in a layered charge density wave (CDW) material. We present data from thermal diffusivity, resistivity, and specific heat measurements: There is a sharp decrease in thermal conductivity both parallel and perpendicular to the primary CDW at the CDW transition temperature. At the same time, the resistivity changes more gradually. Correspondingly, while well above and below $T_c$, a consistent description of the thermal transport applies with essentially independent electron and phonon contributions (estimated using the Wiedemann Franz law), in the critical regime no such description is possible; the observed behavior corresponds to a strongly coupled electron-phonon critical `soup.'

Nematic Antiferromagnetism and Deconfined Criticality from the Interplay between Electron-Phonon and Electron-Electron Interactions

Systems with strong electron-phonon couplings typically exhibit various forms of charge order, while strong electron-electron interactions lead to magnetism. We use determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) calculations to solve a model on a square lattice with a caricature of these interactions. In the limit where electron-electron interactions dominate it has antiferromagnetic (AF) order, while where electron-phonon coupling dominates there is columnar valence-bond solid (VBS) order. We find a novel intervening phase that hosts coexisting nematic and antiferromagnetic orders. We have also found evidence of a Landau-forbidden continuous quantum phase transition with an emergent $O(4)$ symmetry between the VBS and the nematic antiferromagnetic phases.

Strong Coupling Limit of the Holstein-Hubbard Model

We analyze the quantum phase diagram of the Holstein-Hubbard model using an asymptotically exact strong-coupling expansion. We find all sorts of interesting phases including a pair-density wave (PDW), a charge 4e (and even a charge 6e) superconductor, regimes of phase separation, and a variety of distinct charge-density-wave (CDW), spin-density-wave (SDW) and superconducting regimes. We chart the crossovers that occur as a function of the degree of retardation, i.e. the ratio of characteristic phonon frequency to the strength of interactions.

Enhanced thermal Hall effect in nearly ferroelectric insulators

In the context of recent experimental observations of an unexpectedly large thermal Hall conductivity, $κ_H$, in insulating $\mathrm{La_2CuO_4}$ (LCO) and $\mathrm{SrTiO_3}$ (STO), we theoretically explore conditions under which acoustic phonons can give rise to such a large $κ_H$. Both the intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to $κ_H$ are large in proportion to the dielectric constant, $ε$, and the flexoelectric coupling, $F$. While the intrinsic contribution is still orders of magnitude smaller than the observed effect, an extrinsic contribution proportional to the phonon mean free path appears likely to account for the observations, at least in STO. We predict a larger intrinsic $κ_H$ in certain insulating perovskites.

Hubbard ladders at small $U$ revisited

We re-examine the zero temperature phase diagram of the two-leg Hubbard ladder in the small $U$ limit, both analytically and using density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG). We find a ubiquitous Luther-Emery phase, but with a crossover in behavior at a characteristic interaction strength, $U^\star$; for $U \gtrsim U^\star$, there is a single emergent correlation length $\log[ξ] \sim 1/U$, characterizing the gapped modes of the system, but for $U\lesssim U^\star$ there is a hierarchy of length scales, differing parametrically in powers of $U$, reflecting a two-step renormalization group flow to the ultimate fixed point. Finally, to illustrate the versatility of the approach developed here, we sketch its implications for a half-filled triangular lattice Hubbard model on a cylinder, and find results in conflict with inferences concerning the small $U$ phase from recent DMRG studies of the same problem.

Robust superconductivity intertwined with charge density wave and disorder in Pd-intercalated ErTe$_3$

Pd-intercalated ErTe$_3$ is studied as a model system to explore the effect of "intertwined" superconducting and charge density wave (CDW) orders. Despite the common wisdom that superconductivity emerges only when CDW is suppressed, we present data from STM and AC susceptibility measurements that show no direct competition between CDW order and superconductivity. Both coexist over most of the intercalation range, with uniform superconductivity over length scales that exceed the superconducting coherence length. This is despite persisting short-range CDW order and increased scattering from the Pd intercalation. While superconductivity is insensitive to local defects in either of the bi-directional CDWs, vestiges of the Fermi-level distortions are observed in the properties of the superconducting state.

Eliashberg theory of phonon-mediated superconductivity -- when it is valid and how it breaks down

We analyze the validity of Eliashberg theory of phonon-mediated superconductivity in 2D systems in light of recent extensive Monte-Carlo studies of the Holstein model. Conventional wisdom says that Eliashberg theory is applicable as long as vertex corrections remain small. For small ratio of the phonon energy $Ω_0$ and the Fermi energy $E_F$, this condition is supposed to hold even when the dimensionless electron-phonon coupling $λ$ is larger than one, i.e., in the strong coupling regime. A comparison between various quantities computed in the Migdal approximation and those computed by Quantum Monte Carlo prove that this belief is wrong, and we identify analytically some of the ways in which this breakdown occurs for various "normal state" properties at $λ= λ_{cr}$, where $λ_{cr} = O(1)$. The breakdown occurs at temperatures high enough that neither superconducting nor charge-density wave correlations extend over any significant range of distances, so it cannot be associated with the onset of an instability toward any of the relevant ordered ground-states - rather it is associated with the local physics of classical bipolaron formation. Still, we show that certain properties, including the superconducting $T_c$ and the superconducting gap structure below $T_c$, can be accurately inferred from the strong-coupling limit of Eliashberg theory at $λ\leq λ_{cr}$.

Phases of frustrated quantum antiferromagnets on the square and triangular lattices

We analyze the zero temperature phase diagrams of the spin S quantum antiferromagnet on square and triangular lattices with competing nearest and next-nearest exchange interactions as well as biquadratic couplings. We approach the problem from the large S limit. Our primary focus is on determining the extent to which the existence and character of any quantum disordered phases can be inferred from this approach.
