Equivariant formality and the cohomology of subgroups of right-angled Coxeter groups

We construct models for the classifying spaces of coabelian subgroups of right-angled Coxeter groups as homotopy orbit spaces of real moment-angle complexes, generalizing well-known models for the classifying space of a right-angled Coxeter group and its commutator subgroup. This identifies the cohomology of these groups with the Borel equivariant cohomology of elementary abelian $2$-group actions on cubical subcomplexes of a cube $[-1,1]^m$. We then characterize equivariant formality for these actions, leading to a simple graph-theoretic criterion for when the cohomology of a coabelian subgroup is free as a module over the cohomology of the quotient by the commutator subgroup of the right-angled Coxeter group.

Homotopy types of moment-angle complexes associated to almost linear resolutions

We show that the Hurewicz image in the homology of a moment-angle complex, when passed through an isomorphism with the Ext-module of the corresponding Stanley-Reisner ideal, contains the linear strand of this ideal. This recovers and refines results of various authors identifying the homotopy type of a moment-angle complex as a wedge of spheres when the underlying ideal satisfies certain linearity properties. Going further, we study the homotopy types of moment-angle manifolds associated to Gorenstein Stanley-Reisner ideals with (componentwise) almost linear resolutions. The simplicial complexes that give rise to these manifolds are part of an even larger class that we introduce, which generalises the homological behaviour of cyclic polytopes, stacked polytopes and odd-dimensional neighbourly sphere triangulations. For these simplicial complexes the associated moment-angle manifolds are shown to be formal, having the rational homotopy type of connected sums of sphere products, and the (integral) loop space homotopy type of products of spheres and loop spaces of spheres. Along the way we establish a number of purely algebraic results, in particular generalising a result of Römer characterising Koszul modules so that it can be applied to modules with almost linear resolutions.

Polyhedral coproducts

Dualising the construction of a polyhedral product, we introduce the notion of a polyhedral coproduct as a certain homotopy limit over the face poset of a simplicial complex. We begin a study of the basic properties of polyhedral coproducts, surveying the Eckmann-Hilton duals of various familiar examples and properties of polyhedral products. In particular, we show that polyhedral coproducts give a functorial interpolation between the wedge and cartesian product of spaces which differs from the one given by polyhedral products, and we establish a general loop space decomposition for these spaces which is dual to the suspension splitting of a polyhedral product due to Bahri, Bendersky, Cohen and Gitler.

Suspension splittings of 5-dimensional Poincar\'{e} duality complexes and their applications

Let $X$ be a connected, orientable, 5-dimensional Poincar\'{e} duality complex with torsion-free $H_1(X;\mathbb{Z})$. We show that $\Sigma X$ is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of recognisable spaces and study to what extent its homotopy type is determined by algebraic data. These results are then used to compute the unstable cohomotopy groups $\pi^3(X)$ and $\pi^3(X;\mathbb{Z}/k)$ as well as give partial information about the cohomotopy set $\pi^2(X)$.

Cohomology operations for moment-angle complexes and resolutions of Stanley-Reisner rings

A fundamental result in toric topology identifies the cohomology ring of the moment-angle complex $\mathcal{Z}_K$ associated to a simplicial complex $K$ with the Koszul homology of the Stanley--Reisner ring of $K$. By studying cohomology operations induced by the standard torus action on the moment-angle complex, we extend this to a topological interpretation of the minimal free resolution of the Stanley-Reisner ring. The exterior algebra module structure in cohomology induced by the torus action recovers the linear part of the minimal free resolution, and we show that higher cohomology operations induced by the action (in the sense of Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson) can be assembled into an explicit differential on the resolution. Describing these operations in terms of Hochster's formula, we recover and extend a result due to Katthän. We then apply all of this to study the equivariant formality of torus actions on moment-angle complexes. For these spaces, we obtain complete algebraic and combinatorial characterisations of which subtori of the naturally acting torus act equivariantly formally.

Product decompositions of moment-angle manifolds and $B$-rigidity

A simple polytope $P$ is called $B$-rigid if its combinatorial type is determined by the cohomology ring of the moment-angle manifold $\mathcal{Z}_P$ over $P$. We show that any tensor product decomposition of this cohomology ring is geometrically realized by a product decomposition of the moment-angle manifold up to equivariant diffeomorphism. As an application, we find that $B$-rigid polytopes are closed under products, generalizing some recent results in the toric topology literature. Algebraically, our proof establishes that the Koszul homology of a Gorenstein Stanley-Reisner ring admits a nontrivial tensor product decomposition if and only if the underlying simplicial complex decomposes as a join of full subcomplexes.

Infinite families of higher torsion in the homotopy groups of Moore spaces

We give a refinement of the stable Snaith splitting of the double loop space of a Moore space and use it to construct infinite $v_1$-periodic families of elements of order $p^{r+1}$ in the homotopy groups of mod $p^r$ Moore spaces. For odd primes $p$, our splitting implies that the homotopy groups of the mod $p^{r+1}$ Moore spectrum are summands of the unstable homotopy groups of each mod $p^r$ Moore space.

Connected sums of sphere products and minimally non-Golod complexes

We show that if the moment-angle complex $\mathcal{Z}_K$ associated to a simplicial complex $K$ is homotopy equivalent to a connected sum of sphere products with two spheres in each product, then $K$ decomposes as the simplicial join of an $n$-simplex $Δ^n$ and a minimally non-Golod complex. In particular, we prove that $K$ is minimally non-Golod for every moment-angle complex $\mathcal{Z}_K$ homeomorphic to a connected sum of two-fold products of spheres, answering a question of Grbić, Panov, Theriault and Wu.

The fibre of the degree $3$ map, Anick spaces and the double suspension

Let $S^{2n+1}\{p\}$ denote the homotopy fibre of the degree $p$ self map of $S^{2n+1}$. For primes $p \ge 5$, work of Selick shows that $S^{2n+1}\{p\}$ admits a nontrivial loop space decomposition if and only if $n=1$ or $p$. Indecomposability in all but these dimensions was obtained by showing that a nontrivial decomposition of $ΩS^{2n+1}\{p\}$ implies the existence of a $p$-primary Kervaire invariant one element of order $p$ in $π_{2n(p-1)-2}^S$. We prove the converse of this last implication and observe that the homotopy decomposition problem for $ΩS^{2n+1}\{p\}$ is equivalent to the strong $p$-primary Kervaire invariant problem for all odd primes. For $p=3$, we use the $3$-primary Kervaire invariant element $θ_3$ to give a new decomposition of $ΩS^{55}\{3\}$ analogous to Selick's decomposition of $ΩS^{2p+1}\{p\}$ and as an application prove two new cases of a long-standing conjecture stating that the fibre of the double suspension $S^{2n-1} \longrightarrow Ω^2S^{2n+1}$ is homotopy equivalent to the double loop space of Anick's space.

A homotopy decomposition of the fibre of the squaring map on $Ω^3S^{17}$

We use Richter's $2$-primary proof of Gray's conjecture to give a homotopy decomposition of the fibre $Ω^3S^{17}\{2\}$ of the $H$-space squaring map on the triple loop space of the $17$-sphere. This induces a splitting of the mod-$2$ homotopy groups $π_\ast(S^{17}; \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})$ in terms of the integral homotopy groups of the fibre of the double suspension $E^2:S^{2n-1} \to Ω^2S^{2n+1}$ and refines a result of Cohen and Selick, who gave similar decompositions for $S^5$ and $S^9$. We relate these decompositions to various Whitehead products in the homotopy groups of mod-$2$ Moore spaces and Stiefel manifolds to show that the Whitehead square $[i_{2n}, i_{2n}]$ of the inclusion of the bottom cell of the Moore space $P^{2n+1}(2)$ is divisible by $2$ if and only if $2n=2, 4, 8$ or $16$.
