Spin constraints on Regge predictions and perturbative evolution in high energy collisions

Two key issues in the application of perturbative QCD and Regge predictions to high energy processes are whether the hard and soft pomerons should be considered as two separate distinct exchanges and whether the Regge intercepts are Q^2 independent or not. Models involving a distinct hard pomeron exchange predict much larger values for the LHC total cross-section. Here we argue that there is a polarized analogue of this issue in the isovector part of the spin structure function g_1 and that the spin data appear to favour a distinct hard exchange.

Towards an understanding of nucleon spin structure: from hard to soft scales

The workshop "The Helicity Structure of the Nucleon" (BNL June 5, 2006) was organized as part of the 2006 RHIC & AGS Users' Meeting to review the status of the spin problem and future directions. The presentations can be found at http://www.phenix.bnl.gov/WWW/publish/caidala/UsersHelicityWorkshop2006/ . Recent data suggests small polarized glue and strangeness in the proton. Here we present a personal summary of the main results and presentations. What is new and exciting in the data, and what might this tell us about the structure of the proton ?

Eta bound states in nuclei: a probe of flavour-singlet dynamics

We argue that eta bound states in nuclei are sensitive to the singlet component in the eta. The bigger the singlet component, the more attraction and the greater the binding. Thus, measurements of eta bound states will yield new information about axial U(1) dynamics and glue in mesons. Eta - etaprime mixing plays an important role in understanding the value of the eta-nucleon scattering length.

Running couplings for the simultaneous decoupling of heavy quarks

Scale-invariant running couplings are constructed for several quarks being decoupled together, without reference to intermediate thresholds. Large-momentum scales can also be included. The result is a multi-scale generalization of the renormalization group applicable to any order. Inconsistencies in the usual decoupling procedure with a single running coupling can then be avoided, e.g. when cancelling anomalous corrections from t,b quarks to the axial charge of the proton.

Gluonic effects in eta- and etaprime-nucleon and nucleus interactions

Gluonic degrees of freedom play an important role in the masses of the eta and etaprime mesons. We discuss eta- and etaprime-nucleon and nucleus interactions where this glue may be manifest. Interesting processes being studied in experiments are etaprime production in proton-nucleon collisions close to threshold and possible eta-nucleus bound-states.

The Spin Structure of the Proton

This article reviews our present understanding of the QCD spin structure of the proton. We first outline the proton spin puzzle and its possible resolution in QCD. We then review the present and next generation of experiments to resolve the proton's spin-flavour structure, explaining the theoretical issues involved, the present status of experimental investigation, and the open questions and challenges for future investigation.

Anomalous commutators and electroweak baryogenesis

Electroweak vacuum transition processes (sphalerons) in the early Universe provide a possible explanation of the baryon asymmetry. Combining this physics with the anomalous commutators of Adler and Boulware and renormalization group invariance, we argue that electroweak baryon number violation also induces a ``topological condensate'' in the vacuum. QCD sphaleron processes act to distribute the baryon number violation between both left and right handed quarks and induce a spin independent component in this ``condensate''.

Fixed poles, polarized glue and nucleon spin structure

We review the theory and present status of the proton spin problem with emphasis on possible gluonic and sea contributions. We discuss the possibility of a J=1 fixed pole correction to the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule for polarized deep inelastic scattering. Fixed poles in the real part of the forward Compton scattering amplitude have the potential to induce subtraction constant corrections to sum rules for photon nucleon scattering.

Probing polarized strangeness in the proton: the use of heavy quarks and the renormalization group

Once heavy-quark corrections are take into account neutrino-proton elastic scattering provides a complementary probe of polarized strangeness in the nucleon to measurements from inclusive and semi-inclusive polarized deep inelastic scattering. We review the different types of experiment and a recent NLO calculation of heavy-quark contributions to the weak neutral-current axial-charge (measureable in neutrino-proton elastic scattering) performed using Witten's heavy-quark renormalization group method.

Transverse Momentum in Semi-Inclusive Polarized Deep Inelastic Scattering and the Spin-Flavor Structure of the Proton

The non-valence spin-flavor structure of the nucleon extracted from semi-inclusive measurements of polarized deep inelastic scattering depends strongly on the transverse momentum of the detected hadrons which are used to determine the individual polarized sea distributions. This physics may explain the recent HERMES observation of a positively polarized strange sea through semi-inclusive scattering, in contrast to the negative strange sea polarization deduced from inclusive polarized deep inelastic scattering.

Manifestations of anomalous glue: light-mass exotic mesons and the eta-prime nucleon coupling constant

The light-mass exotics with J^{PC}=1^{-+} observed at BNL and CERN may have a simple explanation as dynamically generated resonances in eta-prime pi rescattering in the final state interaction. This dynamics is mediated by the same anomalous glue which also generates the large mass of the eta-prime. OZI violating processes are also potentially important to eta-prime production in proton-proton collisions close to threshold.

The physics of anomalous glue

We give a brief overview of the physics of gluonic degrees of freedom associated with the strong (QCD) axial anomaly. The role of this anomalous glue in the spin structure of the proton and eta'-hadron interactions is discussed.

Proton spin structure and the axial U(1) problem

We emphasise the relation between the spin structure of the proton and the axial U(1) problem. New experiments motivated by the proton spin problem which could shed light on the nature of U(1) symmetry breaking in QCD are discussed.

We review the theory and phenomenology of the axial U(1) problem with emphasis on the role of gluonic degrees of freedom in the low-energy pp -> pp eta and pp -> pp eta' reactions.
