Asymptotic regularity of powers of ideals of points in a weighted projective plane

In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of the regularity of symbolic powers of ideals of points in a weighted projective plane. By a result of Cutkosky, Ein and Lazarsfeld, regularity of such powers behaves asymptotically like a linear function. We study the difference between regularity of such powers and this linear function. Under some conditions, we prove that this difference is bounded, or eventually periodic. As a corollary we show that, if there exists a negative curve, then the regularity of symbolic powers of a monomial space curve is eventually a periodic linear function. We give a criterion for the validity of Nagata's conjecture in terms of the lack of existence of negative curves.

Formal prime ideals of infinite value and their algebraic resolution

Suppose that $R$ is a local domain essentially of finite type over a field of characteristic 0, and $ν$ a valuation of the quotient field of $R$ which dominates $R$. The rank of such a valuation often increases upon extending the valuation to a valuation dominating $\hat R$, the completion of $R$. When the rank of $ν$ is 1, Cutkosky and Ghezzi handle this phenomenon by resolving the prime ideal of infinite value, but give an example showing that when the rank is greater than 1, there is no natural ideal in $\hat R$ that leads to this obstruction. We extend their result on the resolution of prime ideals of infinite value to valuations of arbitrary rank.

Growth of rank 1 valuation semigroups

We consider the question of which semigroups can occur as the semigroup $S_R(ν)$ of positive values of a rank 1 valuation dominating a Noetherian local ring $R$. We give a number of bounds of polynomial type on the growth of $ϕ(n)=S_R(ν)\cap (0,n)$ for $n\in\NN$, starting with the upper bound of $P_R(n)$, where $P_R(n)$ is the Hilbert function of $R$. This bound is generalized to an extremely general bound for arbitrary rank valuations in the paper "Semigroups of valuations on local rings, II", by Cutkosky and Teissier, arXiv:0805.3788. This bound is already enough to give simple examples of rank 1 well ordered semigroups which are not the value semigroup $S_R(ν)$ of a valuation dominating a Noetherian local ring. In the case of rank 1, it is possible to give more precise estimates of $ϕ(n)$, which we prove in this paper. We also give examples showing that many different rates of growth are possible for $ϕ(n)$ on a regular local ring of dimension 2, such as $n(α$ for any rational $α$ with $1\leα\le 2$, and $n{log}(n)$.

Finite Generation of Algebras Associated to Powers of Ideals

We study generalized symbolic powers and form ideals of powers of ideals and compare their growth with the growth of ordinary powers, and we discuss the question of when the graded rings attached to symbolic powers or to form ideals of powers are finitely generated.

Semigroups of valuations on local rings, II

Given a noetherian local domain $R$ and a valuation $ν$ of its field of fractions which is non negative on $R$, we derive some very general bounds on the growth of the number of distinct valuation ideals of $R$ corresponding to values lying in certain parts of the value group $Γ$ of $ν$. We show that this growth condition imposes restrictions on the semigroups $ν(R\setminus \{0\})$ for noetherian $R$ which are stronger that those resulting from the previous paper \cite{C2} of the first author. Given an ordered embedding $Γ\subset ({\mathbf R}^h)_{\hbox{\rm lex}}$, where $h$ is the rank of $ν$, we also study the shape in ${\mathbf R}^h$ of the parts of $Γ$ which appear naturally in this study. We give examples which show that this shape can be quite wild in a way which does not depend on the embedding and suggest that it is a good indicator of the complexity of the semigroup $ν(R\setminus \{0\})$.

Algebraic series and valuation rings over nonclosed fields

Suppose that $k$ is an arbitrary field. Consider the field $k((x_1,...,x_n))$, which is the quotient field of the ring $k[[x_1,...,x_n]]$ of formal power series in the variables $x_1,...,x_n$, with coefficients in $k$. Suppose that $σ$ is a formal power series in $x_1,...,x_n$ with coefficints in the algebraic closure of $k$. We give a very simple necessary and sufficient condition for $σ$ to be algebraic over $k((x_1,...,x_n))$. As an application of our methods, we give a characterization of valuation rings $V$ which dominate an excellent, Noetherian local domain $R$ of dimension two, and such that the rank increases after passing to the completion of a birational extension of $R$.

Semigroups of valuations dominating local domains

A new criterion is given for a semigroup to be the semigroup of a valuation dominating an equicharacteristic local domain. The criterion is used to construct examples of well ordered subsemigroups of the positive rational numbers which are of ordinal type omega, but are not the value semigroup of a valuation on an equicharacteristic noetherian local domain. This shows that the necessary conditions on value semigroups given in Appendix 3 to Zariski and Samuel's book ``Commutative Algebra'' are not sufficient.

Resolution of Singularities for 3-folds in positive characteristic

In this paper a concise, complete proof of resolution of singularities of 3-folds in positive characteristic (>5) is given. The first proof of this theorem was given by Abhyankar in 1966. The resolution morphism in our proof is an isomorphism over the nonsingular locus.

Semigroups of valuations on local rings

In this paper the question of which semigroups are realizable as the semigroup of values attained on a Noetherian local ring which is dominated by a valuation is considered. We give some striking examples, indicating that there may be no constraints on the semigroup beyond those known classically.

Factorizations of birational extensions of local rings

We give a proof of local strong factorization of a birational extension of regular local rings (of equicharacteristic zero) along a valuation of rank 1 and maximal rational rank. This gives an alternate proof to the geometric proof of this Theorem by Karu. Our proof uses only linear algebra, and is in the spirit of Christensen's proof of this result in dimension 3.

Strong Toroidalization of Dominant Morphisms of 3-folds

Suppose that $f:X\to Y$ is a dominant morphism of 3-folds over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We prove that there exist sequences of blow ups of points and nonsingular curves $Φ:X_1\to X$ and $Ψ:Y_1\to Y$ such that the induced map $f_1:Y_1\to X_1$ is a toroidal morphism. This extends an earlier proof of the author of this theorem with the extra assumption that $f$ is birational.

Toroidalization of birational morphisms of 3-folds

We prove that a birational morphism of projective 3-folds, over a field of characteristic zero, can be made toroidal by performing a sequence of blow ups of points and nonsingular curves above the domain and target.

Strong Toroidalization of Birational Morphisms of 3-Folds

In this paper we prove strong toroidalization of birational morphisms of 3-folds. Suppose that f:X\to Y is a birational morphism of nonsingular complete 3-folds, and D_Y, D_X are simple normal crossings divisors on Y and X such that f^{-1}(D_Y)=D_X and D_X contains the singular locus of the morphism f. We prove that there exist morphisms Φ:X_1\to X and Ψ:Y_1\to Y which are products of blow ups of points and nonsingular curves which are supported in the preimage of D_Y and make simple normal crossings with this preimage, such that f_1=Ψ_1^{-1}\circ f\circ Φ_1 is a toroidal morphism. This theorem generalizes the toroidalization theorem which we prove in ``Toroidalization of birational morphisms of 3-folds''.

Asymptotic behaviour of the length of local cohomology

Let k be a field of characteristic 0, R = k[x_1, ..., x_d] be a polynomial ring, and m its maximal homogeneous ideal. Let I be a homogeneous ideal in R. In this paper we investigate asymptotic behaviour of the quotient between the length of local cohomology group H^0_m(R/I^n) and n^d. We show that this quantity always has a limit as n goes to infinity. We also give an example for which the limit is irrational; in particular, this proves that the length of H^0_m(R/I^n) is not asymptotically a polynomial in n.

Completions of valuation rings

Let k be a field of characteristic zero, K an algebraic function field over k, and V a k-valuation ring of K. Zariski's theorem of local uniformization shows that there exist algebraic regular local rings R_i with quotient field K which are dominated by V, and such that the direct union of the R_i's is V. We investigate the ring T, which is the direct union of the completions of the R_i's. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for T to be a valuation ring. We then focus on the case in which the valuation has rank one.

Local monomialization of transcendental extensions

Suppose that f is a dominant morphism from a k-variety X to a k-variety Y, where k is a field of characteristic 0 and v is a valuation of the function field k(X). We allow v to be an arbitary valuation, so it may not be discrete. We prove that there exist sequences of blowups of nonsingular subvarieties from X' to X and from Y' to Y such that X', Y' are nonsingular and X' to Y' is locally a monomial mapping near the center of v. This extends an earlier result of ours (in Asterisque 260) which proves the above result with the restriction that f is generically finite.
