The corona problem with two pieces of data

We study the corona problem on the unit ball in $\CC^n$, and more generally on strongly pseudoconvex domains in $\CC^n$. When the corona problem has just two pieces of data, and an extra geometric hypothesis is satisfied, then we are able to solve it.

The Kobayashi metric, extremal discs, and biholomorphic mappings

We study extremal discs for the Kobayashi metric. Inspired by work of Lempert on strongly convex domains, we present results on strongly pseudoconvex domains. We also consider a useful biholomorphic invariant, inspired by the Kobayashi (and Carathéodory) metric, and prove several new results about biholomorphic equivalence of domains. Some useful results about automorphism groups of complex domains are also established.

Convexity in real analysis

We treat the classical notion of convexity in the context of hard real analysis. Definitions of the concept are given in terms of defining functions and quadratic forms, and characterizations are provided of different concrete notions of convexity. This analytic notion of convexity is related to more classical geometric ideas. Applications are given both to analysis and geometry.

Normed domains of holomorphy

We treat the classical concept of domain of holomorphy in $\CC^n$ when the holomorphic functions considered are restricted to lie in some Banach space. Positive and negative results are presented. A new view of the case $n = 1$ is considered.

On a Construction of L. Hua for Positive Reproducing Kernels

We study a positive reproducing kernel for holomorphic functions on a domain in a complex space. The technique is based on an idea of L. Hua. Applications are provided. These ideas were developed in another context (quantization of Kähler manifolds) by Berezin.

A Tale of Three Kernels

We consider the Bergman, Szegő, and Poisson Szegő kernels on a domain in $\CC$ or $\CC^n$. Various properties and relationships are established. The paper has both an expository component and a research component.

Through a Glass Darkly

We consider the question of how mathematicians view themselves and how non-mathematicians view us. What is our role in society? Is it effective? Is it rewarding? How could it be improved? This paper will be part of a forthcoming volume on this circle of questions.

Analysis and geometry on worm domains

We describe recent work on the Bergman kernel of the (non-smooth) worm domain in several complex variables. An asymptotic expansion is obtained for the Bergman kernel. Mapping properties of the Bergman projection are studied. Irregularity properties of the kernal at the boundary are established. This is an expository paper, and considerable background is provided. Discussion of the smooth worm is also included.

Topologies on the space of holomorphic functions

We show that a fairly arbitrary Frechet space topology on the space of holomorphic functions on a domain controls the topology of uniform convergence on compact sets. In fact it turns out that the result we present can be proved more simply using the closed graph theorem. However, we believe that the techniques presented here may be used to prove a more interesting result. Details to appear later.

The Bergman kernel and projection on non-smooth worm domains

This paper provides a precise asymptotic expansion for the Bergman kernel on the non-smooth worm domains of Christer Kiselman in complex 2-space. Applications are given to the failure of Condition R, to deviant boundary behavior of the kernel, and to L^p mapping properties of the kernel.

Complex Analysis as Catalyst

We illustrate the general principle that complex analysis can be a good setting for posing problems that are best solved using techniques from other mathematical disciplines. Several examples are provided.

The Caratheodory-Cartan-Kaup-Wu theorem on an infinite dimensional Hilbert space

This paper treats a holomorphic self-mapping f: Omega --> Omega of a bounded domain Omega in a separable Hilbert space H with a fixed point p. In case the domain is convex, we prove an infinite-dimensional version of the Cartan-Caratheodory-Kaup-Wu Theorem. This is basically a rigidity result in the vein of the uniqueness part of the classical Schwarz lemma. The main technique, inspired by an old idea of H. Cartan, is iteration of the mapping f and its derivative. A normality result for holomorphic mappings in the compact-weak-open topology, due to Kim and Krantz, is used.
