Video Object Segmentation using Teacher-Student Adaptation in a Human Robot Interaction (HRI) Setting

Video object segmentation is an essential task in robot manipulation to facilitate grasping and learning affordances. Incremental learning is important for robotics in unstructured environments, since the total number of objects and their variations can be intractable. Inspired by the children learning process, human robot interaction (HRI) can be utilized to teach robots about the world guided by humans similar to how children learn from a parent or a teacher. A human teacher can show potential objects of interest to the robot, which is able to self adapt to the teaching signal without providing manual segmentation labels. We propose a novel teacher-student learning paradigm to teach robots about their surrounding environment. A two-stream motion and appearance "teacher" network provides pseudo-labels to adapt an appearance "student" network. The student network is able to segment the newly learned objects in other scenes, whether they are static or in motion. We also introduce a carefully designed dataset that serves the proposed HRI setup, denoted as (I)nteractive (V)ideo (O)bject (S)egmentation. Our IVOS dataset contains teaching videos of different objects, and manipulation tasks. Unlike previous datasets, IVOS provides manipulation tasks sequences with segmentation annotation along with the waypoints for the robot trajectories. It also provides segmentation annotation for the different transformations such as translation, scale, planar rotation, and out-of-plane rotation. Our proposed adaptation method outperforms the state-of-the-art on DAVIS and FBMS with 6.8% and 1.2% in F-measure respectively. It improves over the baseline on IVOS dataset with 46.1% and 25.9% in mIoU.

A characterization of finite quotients of Abelian varieties

In this paper we prove a characterization of quotients of Abelian varieties by the actions of finite groups that are free in codimension-one via some vanishing conditions on the orbifold Chern classes. The characterization is given among a class of varieties with mild singularities that are more general than quotient singularities, namely among the class of klt varieties. Furthermore we show that over a projective klt variety, any semistable reflexive sheaf with vanishing orbifold Chern classes can be obtained as the invariant part of a locally-free sheaf on a finite Galois cover whose associated vector bundle is flat.

On the Kobayashi pseudometric, complex automorphisms and hyperkaehler manifolds

We define the Kobayashi quotient of a complex variety by identifying points with vanishing Kobayashi pseudodistance between them and show that if a compact complex manifold has an automorphism whose order is infinite, then the fibers of this quotient map are nontrivial. We prove that the Kobayashi quotients associated to ergodic complex structures on a compact manifold are isomorphic. We also give a proof of Kobayashi's conjecture on the vanishing of the pseudodistance for hyperkähler manifolds having Lagrangian fibrations without multiple fibers in codimension one. For a hyperbolic automorphism of a hyperkähler manifold, we prove that its cohomology eigenvalues are determined by its Hodge numbers, compute its dynamical degree and show that its cohomological trace grows exponentially, giving estimates on the number of its periodic points.

No Quantum Brooks' Theorem

First, I introduce quantum graph theory. I also discuss a known lower bound on the independence numbers and derive from it an upper bound on the chromatic numbers of quantum graphs. Then, I construct a family of quantum graphs that can be described as tropical, cyclical, and commutative. I also define a step logarithm function and express with it the bounds on quantum graph invariants in closed form. Finally, I obtain an upper bound on the independence numbers and a lower bound on the chromatic numbers of the constructed quantum graphs that are similar in form to the existing bounds. I also show that the constructed family contains graphs of any valence with arbitrarily high chromatic numbers and conclude by it that quantum graph colorings are quite different from classical graph colorings.

Logarithmic Surfaces and Hyperbolicity

In 1981 J.Noguchi proved that in a logarithmic algebraic manifold, having logarithmic irregularity strictly bigger than its dimension, any entire curve is algebraically degenerate. In the present paper we are interested in the case of manifolds having logarithmic irregularity equal to its dimension. We restrict our attention to Brody curves, for which we resolve the problem completely in dimension 2: Theorem: In a logarithmic surface with logarithmic irregularity 2 and logarithmic Kodaira dimension 2, any Brody curve is algebraically degenerate. We also deal with the case of arbitrary logarithmic Kodaira dimension. As a corollary, we get hyperbolicity for such logarithmic surfaces not containing non-hyperbolic algebraic curves and having hyperbolically stratified boundary divisors. In particular we get the "best possible" result on algebraic degeneracy of Brody curves in the complex plane minus a curve consisting of three components, thus improving results of Dethloff-Schumacher-Wong from 1995.

Double sections and dominating maps

As is well-known, given the complex sphere P^1 minus two points, there exist nonconstant holomorphic maps from the plane into this set, the simplest example of which is given by applying the exponential map and then composing with a Möbius transformation taking 0 and 1 to the two given punctures. Likewise, given the sphere minus one point, we can map the plane into this set by simply applying directly a Möbius transformation taking 1 to this puncture. In this paper we prove a parametrized version of this result.
