Transport in neutron star mergers

After an introduction to the QCD phase diagram, the nuclear equations of state, and neutron star mergers, I discuss three projects related to transport and nuclear matter in neutron star mergers. The first is the nature of beta equilibrium in the portion of a merger that is transparent to neutrinos. We calculate the weak interaction (Urca) rates and find that the beta equilibrium condition needs to be modified by adding an additional chemical potential, which changes slightly the particle content in neutrino-transparent beta equilibrium. Secondly, we calculate the bulk viscosity in neutrino-transparent nuclear matter in conditions encountered in neutron star mergers. Bulk viscosity arises from a phase lag between the pressure and density in the nuclear matter, which is due to the finite rate of beta equilibration. When bulk viscosity is sufficiently strong, which happens when the equilibration rate nearly matches the frequency of the density oscillation, it can noticeably dampen the oscillation. We find that in certain thermodynamic conditions likely encountered in mergers, oscillations in nuclear matter can be damped on timescales on the order of 10 milliseconds, so we conclude that bulk viscosity should be included in merger simulations. Finally, we study thermal transport due to axions in neutron star mergers. We conclude that axions are never trapped in mergers, but instead escape, carrying energy away from the merger. We calculate the cooling time due to the energy carried away by axions and find that within current constraints on the axion-nucleon coupling, axions could cool fluid elements in mergers on timescales which could affect the dynamics of the merger.

Damping of density oscillations in neutrino-transparent nuclear matter

We calculate the bulk-viscous dissipation time for adiabatic density oscillations in nuclear matter at densities of 1-7 times nuclear saturation density and at temperatures ranging from 1 MeV, where corrections to previous low-temperature calculations become important, up to 10 MeV, where the assumption of neutrino transparency is no longer valid. Under these conditions, which are expected to occur in neutron star mergers, damping of density oscillations arises from beta equilibration via weak interactions. We find that for 1 kHz oscillations the shortest dissipation times are in the 5 to 20 ms range, depending on the equation of state, which means that bulk viscous damping could affect the dynamics of a neutron star merger. For higher frequencies the dissipation time can be even shorter.

Beta equilibrium in neutron star mergers

We show that the commonly used criterion for beta equilibrium in neutrino-transparent dense nuclear matter becomes invalid as temperatures rise above 1 MeV. Such temperatures are attained in neutron star mergers. By numerically computing the relevant weak interaction rates we find that the correct criterion for beta equilibrium requires an isospin chemical potential that can be as large as 10-20 MeV, depending on the temperature at which neutrinos become trapped.

On the stability of strange dwarf hybrid stars

We investigate the stability of stars with a density discontinuity between a high-density core and a very low density mantle. Previous work on "strange dwarfs" suggested that such a discontinuity could stabilize stars that would have been classified as unstable by the conventional criteria based on extrema in the mass-radius relation. We investigate the stability of such stars by numerically solving the Sturm-Liouville equations for the lowest-energy modes of the star. We find that the conventional criteria are correct, and strange dwarfs are not stable.
