Beyond the spontaneous scalarization: New fully nonlinear dynamical mechanism for formation of scalarized black holes

In the present letter we show the existence of a fully nonlinear dynamical mechanism for the formation of scalarized black holes which is different from the spontaneous scalarization. We consider a class of scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity theories within which no tachyonic instability can occur. Although the Schwarzschild black holes are linearly stable against scalar perturbations, we show dynamically that for certain choices of the coupling function they are unstable against nonlinear scalar perturbations. This nonlinear instability leads to the formation of new black holes with scalar hair. The fully nonlinear and self-consistent study of the equilibrium black holes reveals that the spectrum of solutions is more complicated and more than one scalarized branch can exist. We have also considered classes of scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories where both the standard and the nonlinear scalarization can be present, and they are smoothly connected that completes in an interesting way the picture of black hole scalarization. The fully nonlinear (de)scalarization of a Schwarzschild black hole will always happen with a jump because the stable "scalarized branch" is not continuously connected to the Schwarzschild one that can leave clear observational signatures.

Dynamical Formation of Scalarized Black Holes and Neutron Stars through Stellar Core Collapse

In a certain class of scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, the black holes and the neutron stars can undergo spontaneous scalarization -- a strong gravity phase transition triggered by a tachyonic instability due to the nonminimal coupling between the scalar field and the spacetime curvature. Studies of this phenomenon have, so far, been restricted mainly to the study of the tachyonic instability and stationary scalarized black holes and neutron stars. To date, no realistic physical mechanism for the formation of isolated scalarized black holes and neutron stars has been proposed. We study, for the first time, the spherically symmetric fully nonlinear stellar core collapse to a black hole and a neutron star in scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theories allowing for a spontaneous scalarization. We show that the core collapse can produce scalarized black holes and scalarized neutron stars starting with a nonscalarized progenitor star. The possible paths to reach the end (non)scalarized state are quite rich leading to interesting possibilities for observational manifestations.

Nonlinear evolution and non-uniqueness of scalarized neutron stars

It was recently shown, that in a class of tensor-multi-scalar theories of gravity with a nontrivial target space metric, there exist scalarized neutron star solutions. An important property of these compact objects is that the scalar charge is zero and therefore, the binary pulsar experiments can not impose constraints based on the absence of scalar dipole radiation. Moreover, the structure of the solutions is very complicated. For a fixed central energy density up to three neutron star solutions can exist -- one general relativistic and two scalarized, that is quite different from the scalarization in other alternative theories of gravity. In the present paper we address the stability of these solutions using two independent approaches -- solving the linearized radial perturbation equations and performing nonlinear simulations in spherical symmetry. The results show that the change of stability occurs at the maximum mass models and all solutions before that point are stable. This leads to the interesting consequence that there exists a stable part of the scalarized branch close to the bifurcation point where the mass of the star increases with the decrease of the central energy density.

Spontaneously scalarized black holes in dynamical Chern-Simons gravity: dynamics and equilibrium solutions

In the present paper, we construct spontaneously scalarized rotating black hole solutions in dynamical Chern-Simons (dCS) gravity by following the scalar field evolution in the decoupling limit. For the range of parameters where the Kerr black hole becomes unstable within dCS gravity the scalar field grows exponentially until it reaches an equilibrium configuration that is independent of the initial perturbation. Interestingly, the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry of the scalar field is broken and a strong maximum around only one of the rotational axes can be observed. The black hole scalar charge is calculated for two coupling functions suggesting that the main observations would remain qualitatively correct even if one considers coupling functions/coupling parameters producing large deviations from the Kerr solution beyond the decoupling limit approximation.

Circular Orbits Structure and Thin Accretion Disks around Kerr Black Holes with Scalar Hair

In this paper we first investigate the equatorial circular orbit structure of Kerr black holes with scalar hair (KBHsSH) and highlight their most prominent features which are quite distinct from the exterior region of ordinary bald Kerr black holes, i.e. peculiarities that arise from the combined bound system of a hole with an off-center, self-gravitating distribution of scalar matter. Some of these traits are incompatible with the thin disk approach, thus we identify and map out various regions in the parameter space respectively. All the solutions for which the stable circular orbital velocity (and angular momentum) curve is continuous are used for building thin and optically thick disks around them, from which we extract the radiant energy fluxes, luminosities and efficiencies. We compare the results in batches with the same spin parameter $j$ but different normalized charges, and the profiles are richly diverse. Because of the existence of a conserved scalar charge, $Q$, these solutions are non-unique in the $(M, J)$ parameter space. Furthermore, $Q$ cannot be extracted asymptotically from the metric functions. Nevertheless, by constraining the parameters through different observations, the luminosity profile could in turn be used to constrain the Noether charge and characterize the spacetime, should KBHsSH exist.

On the dynamics of the nonrotating and rotating black hole scalarization

Even though black hole scalarization is extensively studied recently, little has been done in the direction of understanding the dynamics of this process, especially in the rapidly rotating regime. In the present paper, we focus exactly on this problem by considering the nonlinear dynamics of the scalar field while neglecting the backreaction on the spacetime metric. This approach has proven to give good results in various scenarios and we have explicitly demonstrated its accuracy for nonrotating black holes especially close to the bifurcation point. We have followed the evolution of a black hole from a small initial perturbation, throughout the exponential growth of the scalar field followed by a subsequent saturation to an equilibrium configuration. As expected, even though the emitted signal and the time required to scalarize the black hole are dependent on the initial perturbation, the final stationary state that is reached is independent on the initial data.

Non-linear stability of soliton solutions for massive tensor-multi-scalar-theories

The aim of this paper is to study the stability of soliton-like static solutions via non-linear simulations in the context of a special class of massive tensor-multi-scalar-theories of gravity whose target space metric admits Killing field(s) with a periodic flow. We focused on the case with two scalar fields and maximally symmetric target space metric, as the simplest configuration where solitonic solutions can exist. In the limit of zero curvature of the target space $κ= 0$ these solutions reduce to the standard boson stars, while for $κ\ne 0$ significant deviations can be observed, both qualitative and quantitative. By evolving these solitonic solutions in time, we show that they are stable for low values of the central scalar field $ψ_c$ while instability kicks in with the increase of $ψ_c$. Specifically, in the stable region, the models oscillate with a characteristic frequency related to the fundamental mode. Such frequency tends to zero with the approach of the unstable models and eventually becomes imaginary when the solitonic solutions lose stability. As expected from the study of the equilibrium models, the change of stability occurs exactly at the maximum mass point, which was checked numerically with a very good accuracy.

Rotating tensor-multiscalar black holes with two scalars

We construct hairy black hole solutions in a particular set of tensor-multi-scalar theories of gravity for which the target-space admits a Killing vector field with periodic flow that is furthermore the generator of a one-parameter family of point transformations which leave the whole theory invariant. As for black holes with scalar hair in general relativity, these must be rotating objects as the scalarization arises from superradiant instability. We analyze the most fundamental rotating solutions (winding number $m=1$) in five theories which differ from each other by the value of the Gauss curvature of the target-space. The domain of existence of these solutions is investigated, as well as their hairyness, horizon area and deformation factor.

Spin-induced scalarization of Kerr black holes with a massive scalar field

In the present paper we study the onset of the spin-induced scalarization of a Kerr black hole in scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity with a massive scalar field. Our approach is based on a (2+1) time evolution of the relevant linearized scalar field perturbation equation. We examine the region where the Kerr black hole becomes unstable giving rise to new scalarized rotating black holes with a massive scalar field. With increasing of the scalar field mass, the minimum value of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling parameter at which scalarization is possible, increases and thus the instability region shrinks. Interestingly, the introduction of scalar field mass does not change the critical minimal value of the black hole angular momentum $a_{\rm crit}/M$ where the instability of the Kerr black hole develops.

Black hole scalarization induced by the spin -- 2+1 time evolution

The scalarization is a very interesting phenomena allowing to endow a compact object with scalar hair while leaving all the predictions in the weak field limit unaltered. In Gauss-Bonnet gravity the source of the scalar field can be the curvature of the space-time. It was recently shown that for a particular type of coupling function between the scalar field and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant, spin-induced black hole scalarization is possible. In the present paper we study this phenomenon by performing a 2+1 time evolution of the relevant linearized scalar field perturbation equation and examine the region where the Kerr black hole becomes unstable giving rise to new scalarized rotating black holes. This is more direct numerical approach to study the development of spin-induced scalarization and it can serve as an independent check of the previous results.

Slowly rotating topological neutron stars -- universal relations and epicyclic frequencies

In the modern era of abundant X-ray detections and the increasing momentum of gravitational waves astronomy, tests of General Relativity in strong field regime become increasingly feasible and their importance for probing gravity cannot be understated. To this end, we study the characteristics of slowly rotating topological neutron stars in the tensor-multi-scalar theories of gravity following the static study of this new type of compact objects by two of the authors. We explore the moment of inertia and verify that universal relations known from General Relativity hold for this new class of compact objects. Furthermore, we study the properties of their innermost stable circular orbits (ISCO) and the epicyclic frequencies due to the latter's hinted link to observational quantities such as quasi-periodic X-ray spectrum features.

Multi-scalar Gauss-Bonnet gravity -- hairy black holes and scalarization

In the present paper we consider multi-scalar extension of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We focus on multi-scalar Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet models whose target space is a three-dimensional maximally symmetric space, namely either $\mathbb{S}^3$, $\mathbb{H}^3$ or $\mathbb{R}^3$, and in the case when the map $\text{\it spacetime} \to \text{\it target space}$ is nontrivial. We prove numerically the existence of black holes in this class of models for several Gauss-Bonnet coupling functions, including the case of scalarization. We also perform systematic study of a variety of black hole characteristics and the space-time around them, such as the area of the horizon, the entropy and the radius of the photon sphere. One of the most important properties of the obtained solutions is that the scalar charge is zero and thus the scalar dipole radiation is suppressed which leads to much weaker observational constraints compared to the majority of modified theories possessing a scalar degree of freedom. For one of the coupling functions we could find branches of scalarized black holes which have a nontrivial structure -- there is non-uniqueness of the scalarized solutions belonging to a single branch and there is a region of the parameter space where most probably stable scalarized black holes coexist with the stable Schwarzschild black holes. Such a phenomena can have a clear observational signature.

Polar quasinormal modes of the scalarized Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black holes

We study the polar quasinormal modes of spontaneously scalarized black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory. In previous works we showed that a set of nodeless solutions of the fundamental branch of the model studied in [1] are stable under both radial [2] and axial perturbations [3]. Here we calculate the polar quasinormal modes and show that this set of solutions is stable against the polar perturbations as well. Thus for a certain region of the parameter space the scalarized black holes are potentially stable physically interesting objects. The spectrum of the polar quasinormal modes differs both quantitatively and qualitatively from the Schwarzschild one which offers the possibility to test the Gauss-Bonnet theory via the future gravitational wave observations.

Stability of topological neutron stars

Tensor-multi-scalar theories (TMST) are among the most natural generalizations of Einstein's theory, they are mathematically self-consistent and free from pathologies. They pass through all the known observations but contrary to standard scalar-tensor theories, TMST offer extremely rich spectrum of solutions and allow for large deviations from general relativity. One of the most interesting objects in these theories are the topological neutron stars. The main goal in the present paper is to study their radial stability since many branches of solutions can exist even for a fixed value of the topological charge. It turns out that only one of these branches is stable for each value of the topological charge while all the rest are unstable. The stable branch is exactly the one that spans from small to large neutron star masses having as well moderate values of the radii in agreement with the observations. As expected, it becomes unstable at the maximum of the mass. The frequencies of the radial modes are examined and it turns out that in most cases the mode frequencies are larger than the general relativistic ones and they increase with the increase of the topological charge. All this shows that the topological neutron stars are viable astrophysical objects that should be explored further in order to determine their observational manifestations.

Non-topological spontaneously scalarized neutron stars in tensor-multi-scalar theories of gravity

In the present paper, we numerically construct new non-topological, spontaneously scalarized neutron stars in the tensor-multi-scalar theories of gravity whose target space is a three-dimensional maximally symmetric space, namely either $\mathbb{S}^3$, $\mathbb{H}^3$ or $\mathbb{R}^3$, and in the case of a nontrivial map $φ: \text{\it spacetime} \to \text{\it target space}$. The theories of gravity admitting scalarization are characterized by the fact that the field equations always admit the general relativistic solution but for certain ranges of the parameters space it loses stability and nonlinear development of a scalar field is observed. Thus, in order to determine the values of the parameters where such scalarization is possible we studied the stability of the general relativistic solution within the framework of the considered tensor-multi-scalar theories. Based on these results we could obtain a family of scalarized branches characterized by the number of the scalar field nodes. These branches bifurcate from the general relativistic solution at the points where new unstable modes appear and they are energetically more favorable over the pure Einstein solutions. Interestingly, in certain parameter ranges, we could obtain non-uniqueness within a single branch of scalarized solutions.

Relativistic stars in 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

In the present paper we investigate the structure of relativistic stars in 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. The mass-radius relations are obtained for realistic hadronic and for strange quark star equations of state, and for a wide range of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling parameter $α$. Even though the deviations from general relativity for nonzero values of $α$ can be large enough, they are still comparable with the variations due to different modern realistic equations of state if we restrict ourselves to moderate value of $α$. That is why the current observations of the neutron star masses and radii alone can not impose stringent constraints on the value of the parameter $α$. Nevertheless some rough constraints on $α$ can be put. The existence of stable stellar mass black holes imposes $\sqrtα\lesssim 2.6 {\rm km}$ for $α>0$ while the requirement that the maximum neutron star mass should be greater than two solar masses gives $\sqrt{|α|}\lesssim 3.9 {\rm km}$ for $α<0$. We also present an exact solution describing the structure of relativistic stars with uniform energy density in 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity.

Axial perturbations of the scalarized Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black holes

We study the axial perturbations of spontaneously scalarized black holes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) theories. We consider the nodeless solutions of the fundamental branch of the model studied in [1], which possesses a region of radially stable configurations, as shown in [2]. Here we show that almost all of the radially stable black holes are also stable under axial perturbations. When the axial potential is no longer strictly positive, we make use of the S-deformation method to show stability. As for the radial perturbations, hyperbolicity is lost below a certain critical horizon size for a fixed coupling constant. In the stable region, we determine the spectrum of the quasinormal modes by time evolution and by solving the associated time-independent eigenvalue problem.

Rotating tensor-multi-scalar solitons

In the context of a special class of tensor-multi-scalar theories of gravity for which the target-space metric admits an isometry under which the theory is invariant, we present rotating vacuum solutions, namely with no matter fields. These objects behave like nontopological solitons, whose primary stability is due to the conserved charge arising from the global symmetry. We consider theories with two and three scalar fields, different Gauss curvatures and quartic interaction coefficients. As it occurs for boson stars, their angular momentum is quantized.
