The Haagerup property for locally compact quantum groups

The Haagerup property for locally compact groups is generalised to the context of locally compact quantum groups, with several equivalent characterisations in terms of the unitary representations and positive-definite functions established. In particular it is shown that a locally compact quantum group G has the Haagerup property if and only if its mixing representations are dense in the space of all unitary representations. For discrete G we characterise the Haagerup property by the existence of a symmetric proper conditionally negative functional on the dual quantum group $\hat{G}$; by the existence of a real proper cocycle on G, and further, if G is also unimodular we show that the Haagerup property is a von Neumann property of G. This extends results of Akemann, Walter, Bekka, Cherix, Valette, and Jolissaint to the quantum setting and provides a connection to the recent work of Brannan. We use these characterisations to show that the Haagerup property is preserved under free products of discrete quantum groups.

The Cuntz semigroup and stability of close C*-algebras

We prove that separable C*-algebras which are completely close in a natural uniform sense have isomorphic Cuntz semigroups, continuing a line of research developed by Kadison - Kastler, Christensen, and Khoshkam. This result has several applications: we are able to prove that the property of stability is preserved by close C*-algebras provided that one algebra has stable rank one; close C*-algebras must have affinely homeomorphic spaces of lower-semicontinuous quasitraces; strict comparison is preserved by sufficient closeness of C*-algebras. We also examine C*-algebras which have a positive answer to Kadison's Similarity Problem, as these algebras are completely close whenever they are close. A sample consequence is that sufficiently close C*-algebras have isomorphic Cuntz semigroups when one algebra absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra tensorially.

Type II_1 factors satisfying the spatial isomorphism conjecture

This paper addresses a conjecture of Kadison and Kastler that a von Neumann algebra M on a Hilbert space H should be unitarily equivalent to each sufficiently close von Neumann algebra N and, moreover, the implementing unitary can be chosen to be close to the identity operator. This is known to be true for amenable von Neumann algebras and in this paper we describe new classes of non-amenable factors for which the conjecture is valid. These are based on tensor products of the hyperfinite II_1 factor with crossed products of abelian algebras by suitably chosen discrete groups.

$\mathcal Z$-stability and finite dimensional tracial boundaries

We show that a simple separable unital nuclear nonelementary $C^*$-algebra whose tracial state space has a compact extreme boundary with finite covering dimension admits uniformly tracially large order zero maps from matrix algebras into its central sequence algebra. As a consequence, strict comparison implies $\Z$-stability for these algebras.

On spectral triples on crossed products arising from equicontinuous actions

The external Kasparov product is used to construct odd and even spectral triples on crossed products of $C^*$-algebras by actions of discrete groups which are equicontinuous in a natural sense. When the group in question is $\Z$ this gives another viewpoint on the spectral triples introduced by Belissard, Marcolli and Reihani. We investigate the properties of this construction and apply it to produce spectral triples on the Bunce-Deddens algebra arising from the odometer action on the Cantor set and some other crossed products of AF-algebras.

Decomposable approximations of nuclear C*-algebras

We show that nuclear C*-algebras have a refined version of the completely positive approximation property, in which the maps that approximately factorize through finite dimensional algebras are convex combinations of order zero maps. We use this to show that a separable nuclear C*-algebra A which is closely contained in a C*-algebra B embeds into B.

C*-algebras nearly contained in type I algebras

In this paper we consider near inclusions $A\subseteq_γB$ of C$^*$-algebras. We show that if $B$ is a separable type I C*-algebra and $A$ satisfies Kadison's similarity problem, then $A$ is also type I and use this to obtain an embedding of $A$ into $B$.

Shift invariant preduals of $\ell_1(\Z)$

The Banach space $\ell_1(\Z)$ admits many non-isomorphic preduals, for example, $C(K)$ for any compact countable space $K$, along with many more exotic Banach spaces. In this paper, we impose an extra condition: the predual must make the bilateral shift on $\ell_1(\Z)$ weak$^*$-continuous. This is equivalent to making the natural convolution multiplication on $\ell_1(\Z)$ separately weak*-continuous and so turning $\ell_1(\Z)$ into a dual Banach algebra. We call such preduals \emph{shift-invariant}. It is known that the only shift-invariant predual arising from the standard duality between $C_0(K)$ (for countable locally compact $K$) and $\ell_1(\Z)$ is $c_0(\Z)$. We provide an explicit construction of an uncountable family of distinct preduals which do make the bilateral shift weak$^*$-continuous. Using Szlenk index arguments, we show that merely as Banach spaces, these are all isomorphic to $c_0$. We then build some theory to study such preduals, showing that they arise from certain semigroup compactifications of $\Z$. This allows us to produce a large number of other examples, including non-isometric preduals, and preduals which are not Banach space isomorphic to $c_0$.

The Radial Masa in a Free Group Factor is Maximal Injective

The radial (or Laplacian) masa in a free group factor is the abelian von Neumann algebra generated by the sum of the generators (of the free group) and their inverses. The main result of this paper is that the radial masa is a maximal injective von Neumann subalgebra of a free group factor. We also investigate tensor products of maximal injective algebras. Given two inclusions $B_i\subset M_i$ of type $\mathrm{I}$ von Neumann algebras in finite von Neumann algebras such that each $B_i$ is maximal injective in $M_i$, we show that the tensor product $B_1\ \bar{\otimes}\ B_2$ is maximal injective in $M_1\ \bar{\otimes}\ M_2$ provided at least one of the inclusions satisfies the asymptotic orthogonality property we establish for the radial masa. In particular it follows that finite tensor products of generator and radial masas will be maximal injective in the corresponding tensor product of free group factors.

Groupoid normalisers of tensor products: infinite von Neumann algebras

The groupoid normalisers of a unital inclusion $B\subseteq M$ of von Neumann algebras consist of the set $\mathcal{GN}_M(B)$ of partial isometries $v\in M$ with $vBv^*\subseteq B$ and $v^*Bv\subseteq B$. Given two unital inclusions $B_i\subseteq M_i$ of von Neumann algebras, we examine groupoid normalisers for the tensor product inclusion $B_1\ \overline{\otimes}\ B_2\subseteq M_1\ \overline{\otimes}\ M_2$ establishing the formula $$ \mathcal{GN}_{M_1\,\overline{\otimes}\,M_2}(B_1\ \overline{\otimes}\ B_2)''=\mathcal{GN}_{M_1}(B_1)''\ \overline{\otimes}\ \mathcal{GN}_{M_2}(B_2)'' $$ when one inclusion has a discrete relative commutant $B_1'\cap M_1$ equal to the centre of $B_1$ (no assumption is made on the second inclusion). This result also holds when one inclusion is a generator masa in a free group factor. We also examine when a unitary $u\in M_1\ \overline{\otimes}\ M_2$ normalising a tensor product $B_1\ \overline{\otimes}\ B_2$ of irreducible subfactors factorises as $w(v_1\otimes v_2)$ (for some unitary $w\in B_1\ \overline{\otimes}\ B_2$ and normalisers $v_i\in\mathcal{N}_{M_i}(B_i)$). We obtain a positive result when one of the $M_i$ is finite or both of the $B_i$ are infinite. For the remaining case, we characterise the II$_1$ factors $B_1$ for which such factorisations always occur (for all $M_1, B_2$ and $M_2$) as those with a trivial fundamental group.

Perturbations of nuclear C*-algebras

Kadison and Kastler introduced a natural metric on the collection of all C*-subalgebras of the bounded operators on a separable Hilbert space. They conjectured that sufficiently close algebras are unitarily conjugate. We establish this conjecture when one algebra is separable and nuclear. We also consider one-sided versions of these notions, and we obtain embeddings from certain near inclusions involving separable nuclear C*-algebras. At the end of the paper we demonstrate how our methods lead to improved characterisations of some of the types of algebras that are of current interest in the classification programme.

Perturbations of C*-algebraic invariants

Kadison and Kastler introduced a metric on the set of all C$^*$-algebras on a fixed Hilbert space. In this paper structural properties of C$^*$-algebras which are close in this metric are examined. Our main result is that the property of having a positive answer to Kadison's similarity problem transfers to close C$^*$-algebras. In establishing this result we answer questions about closeness of commutants and tensor products when one algebra satisfies the similarity property. We also examine $K$-theory and traces of close C$^*$-algebras, showing that sufficiently close algebras have isomorphic Elliott invariants when one algebra has the similarity property.

Preduals of semigroup algebras

For a locally compact group $G$, the measure convolution algebra $M(G)$ carries a natural coproduct. In previous work, we showed that the canonical predual $C_0(G)$ of $M(G)$ is the unique predual which makes both the product and the coproduct on $M(G)$ weak$^*$-continuous. Given a discrete semigroup $S$, the convolution algebra $\ell^1(S)$ also carries a coproduct. In this paper we examine preduals for $\ell^1(S)$ making both the product and the coproduct weak$^*$-continuous. Under certain conditions on $S$, we show that $\ell^1(S)$ has a unique such predual. Such $S$ include the free semigroup on finitely many generators. In general, however, this need not be the case even for quite simple semigroups and we construct uncountably many such preduals on $\ell^1(S)$ when $S$ is either $\mathbb Z_+\times\mathbb Z$ or $(\mathbb N,\cdot)$.

Conditions implying the uniqueness of the weak$^*$-topology on certain group algebras

We investigate possible preduals of the measure algebra $M(G)$ of a locally compact group and the Fourier algebra $A(G)$ of a separable compact group. Both of these algebras are canonically dual spaces and the canonical preduals make the multiplication separately weak$^*$-continuous so that these algebras are dual Banach algebras. In this paper we find additional conditions under which the preduals $C_0(G)$ of $M(G)$ and $C^*(G)$ of $A(G)$ are uniquely determined. In both cases we consider a natural coassociative multiplication and show that the canonical predual gives rise to the unique weak$^*$-topology making both the multiplication separately weak$^*$-continuous and the coassociative multiplication weak$^*$-continuous. In particular, dual cohomological properties of these algebras are well defined with this additional structure.

Generators of II_1 Factors

In 2005, Shen introduced a new invariant, $\mathcal G(N)$, of a diffuse von Neumann algebra $N$ with a fixed faithful trace, and he used this invariant to give a unified approach to showing that large classes of ${\mathrm{II}}_1$ factors $M$ are singly generated. This paper focuses on properties of this invariant. We relate $\mathcal G(M)$ to the number of self-adjoint generators of a ${\mathrm{II}}_1$ factor $M$: if $\mathcal G(M) 0$. In particular, if $\mathcal G(\mathcal L\mathbb F_r)>0$ for any particular $r>1$, then the free group factors are pairwise non-isomorphic and are not singly generated for sufficiently large values of $r$. Estimates are given for forming free products and passing to finite index subfactors and the basic construction. We also examine a version of the invariant $\mathcal G_{\text{sa}}(M)$ defined only using self-adjoint operators; this is proved to satisfy $\mathcal G_{\text{sa}}(M)=2\mathcal G(M)$. Finally we give inequalities relating a quantity involved in the calculation of $\mathcal G(M)$ to the free-entropy dimension $δ_0$ of a collection of generators for $M$.

Values of the Pukanszky Invariant in McDuff Factors

In 1960 Pukánszky introduced an invariant associating to every masa in a separable $\mathrm{II}_1$ factor a non-empty subset of $\mathbb N\cup\{\infty\}$. This invariant examines the multiplicity structure of the von Neumann algebra generated by the left-right action of the masa. In this paper it is shown that every non-empty subset of $\mathbb N\cup\{\infty\}$ arises as the Pukánszky invariant of some masa in a separable McDuff $\mathrm{II}_1$ factor which contains a masa with Pukánszky invariant $\{1\}$. In particular the hyperfinite $\mathrm{II}_1$ factor and all separable McDuff $\mathrm{II}_1$ factors with a Cartan masa satisfy this hypothesis. In a general separable McDuff factor we show that every subset of $\mathbb N\cup\{\infty\}$ containing $\infty$ is obtained as a Pukánskzy invariant of some masa.

Semi-regular masas of transfinite length

In 1965 Tauer produced a countably infinite family of semi-regular masas in the hyperfinite $\mathrm{II}_1$ factor, no pair of which are conjugate by an automorphism. This was achieved by iterating the process of passing to the algebra generated by the normalisers and, for each $n\in\mathbb N$, finding masas for which this procedure terminates at the $n$-th stage. Such masas are said to have length $n$. In this paper we consider a transfinite version of this idea, giving rise to a notion of ordinal valued length. We show that all countable ordinals arise as lengths of semi-regular masas in the hyperfinite $\mathrm{II}_1$ factor. Furthermore, building on work of Jones and Popa, we obtain all possible combinations of regular inclusions of irreducible subfactors in the normalising tower.
