The top threshold effect in the $γγ$ production at the LHC

We compute the top quark threshold contributions to the $γγ$ production at the LHC. They appear when the invariant mass of the photon pair, $M_{γγ}$ just exceeds two times the mass of the top quark and induce some feature in the $M_{γγ}$ distribution. We determine the magnitude of this threshold effect and characterize this feature with a simple empirical fitting function to show that it is possible to observe this effect at the LHC in future. We also explore some possible improvements that may enhance its significance.

Probing Compositeness with the CMS $eejj$ & $eej$ Data

Quark-lepton compositeness is a well-known beyond the Standard Model (SM) scenario with heavy exotic particles like leptoquarks (LQs) and leptogluons (LGs) etc. These particles can couple to leptons and jets simultaneously. In this letter, we use the recent CMS scalar LQ search data in the $eejj$ and $eej$ channels to probe this scenario. We recast the data in terms of a color octet partner of the SM electron (or a first generation spin-1/2 LG) that couples to an electron and a gluon via a dimension five operator suppressed by the quark-lepton compositeness scale ($Λ$). By combining different production processes of the color octet electron ($e_8$) at the LHC, we use the CMS 8TeV data to obtain a simultaneous bound on $Λ$ and the mass of the $e_8$ ($M_{e_8}$). We also study the reach of the 13 TeV LHC to discover the $e_8$ and interpret the required luminosity in terms of $M_{e_8}$ and $Λ$.

Pair Production of Scalar Leptoquarks at the LHC to NLO Parton Shower Accuracy

We present the scalar leptoquark pair production process at the LHC computed at the next-to-leading order in QCD, matched to the PYTHIA parton shower using the MC@NLO formalism. We consider the leading order decay of a leptoquark to a lepton ($e,μ,τ$ or $ν_e,ν_μ,ν_τ$) and a jet and observe the effects of parton shower on the final states. For demonstration, we display the kinametical distributions of a selection of observables along with their scale uncertainties for the 13 TeV LHC. We also present pair production cross sections and $K$-factors using massless five-quark flavor scheme for different LHC center-of-mass energies. The complete stand-alone code is available online.

ELKO fermions as dark matter candidates

We study the implications of the ELKO fermions as a cold dark matter candidate. Such fermions arise in theories that are not symmetric under the full Lorentz group. Although they do not carry electric charge, ELKOs can still couple to photons through a nonstandard interaction. They also couple to the Higgs but do not couple to other standard model particles. We impose limits on their coupling strength and the ELKO mass assuming that these particles give dominant contribution to the cosmological cold dark matter. We also determine limits imposed by the direct dark matter search experiments on the ELKO-photon and the ELKO-Higgs coupling. Furthermore we determine the limit imposed by the gamma ray bursts time delay observations on the ELKO-Higgs coupling. We find that astrophysical and cosmological considerations rule out the possibility that ELKO may contribute significantly as a cold dark matter candidate. The only allowed scenario in which it can contribute significantly as a dark matter candidate is that it was never in equilibrium with the cosmic plasma. We also obtain a relationship between the ELKO self-coupling and its mass by demanding it to be consistent with observations of dense cores in the galactic centers.

Single Productions of Colored Particles at the LHC: An Example with Scalar Leptoquarks

Current LHC searches for new colored particles generally focus on their pair production channels and assume any single production to be negligible. We argue that such an assumption may be unnecessary in some cases. Inclusion of model dependent single productions in pair production searches (or vice versa) can give us new information about model parameters or better exclusion limits. Considering the example of the recent CMS search for first generation scalar leptoquarks in the pair production channel, we illustrate how single productions can be systematically included in the signal estimations and demonstrate how it can affect the mass exclusion limits and give new bounds on leptoquark-lepton-quark couplings. We also estimate the effect of the pair production in the more recent CMS search for scalar leptoquarks in single production channels.

Non-relativistic matter and Dark energy in a quantum conformal model

We consider a generalization of the standard model which respects quantum conformal invariance. This model leads to identically zero vacuum energy. We show how non-relativistic matter and dark energy arises in this model. Hence the model is shown to be consistent with observations.

The fine tuning of the cosmological constant in a conformal model

We consider a conformal model involving two real scalar fields in which the conformal symmetry is broken by a soft mechanism and is not anomalous. One of these scalar fields is representative of the standard model Higgs. The model predicts exactly zero cosmological constant. In the simplest version of the model, some of the couplings need to be fine tuned to very small values. We formulate the problem of fine tuning of these couplings. We argue that the problem arises since we require a soft mechanism to break conformal symmetry. The symmetry breaking is possible only if the scalar fields do not evolve significantly over the time scale of the Universe. We present two solutions to this fine tuning problem. We argue that the problem is solved if the classical value of one of the scalar fields is super-Planckian, i.e. takes a value much larger than the Planck mass. The second solution involves introduction of a strongly coupled hidden sector that we call hypercolor. In this case the conformal invariance is broken dynamically and triggers the breakdown of the electroweak symmetry. We argue that our analysis applies also to the case of the standard model Higgs multiplet.

Coupling Extraction From Off-Shell Cross-sections

In this note, we present a novel method of extracting the couplings of a new heavy particle to the Standard Model states. Contrary to the usual discovery process which involves studying the on-shell production, we look at regions away from resonance to take advantage of the simple scaling of the cross-section with the couplings. We apply the procedure to the case of a heavy quark as an illustration.

LHC Signatures of Warped-space Vectorlike Quarks

We study the LHC signatures of TeV scale vectorlike quarks $b'$, $t'$ and $χ$ with electromagnetic charges -1/3, 2/3 and 5/3 that appear in many beyond the standard model (BSM) extensions. We consider warped extra-dimensional models and analyze the phenomenology of such vectorlike quarks that are the custodial partners of third generation quarks. In addition to the usually studied pair-production channels which depend on the strong coupling, we put equal emphasis on single production channels that depend on electroweak couplings and on electroweak symmetry breaking induced mixing effects between the heavy vectorlike quarks and standard model quarks. We identify new promising $gg$-initiated pair and single production channels and find the luminosity required for discovering these states at the LHC. For these channels, we propose a cut that allows one to extract the relevant electroweak couplings. Although the motivation is from warped models, we present many of our results model-independently.

On a boundary-localized Higgs boson in 5D theories

In the context of a simple five-dimensional (5D) model with bulk matter coupled to a brane-localized Higgs boson, we point out a new non-commutativity in the 4D calculation of the mass spectrum for excited fermion towers: the obtained expression depends on the choice in ordering the limits, N->infinity (infinite Kaluza-Klein tower) and epsilon->0 (epsilon being the parameter introduced for regularizing the Higgs Dirac peak). This introduces the physical question of which one is the correct order; we then show that the two possible orders of regularization (called I and II) are physically equivalent, as both can typically reproduce the measured observables, but that the one with less degrees of freedom (I) could be uniquely excluded by future experimental constraints. This conclusion is based on the exact matching between the 4D and 5D analytical calculations of the mass spectrum - via the regularizations of type I and II. Beyond a deeper insight into the Higgs peak regularizations, this matching also allows us to confirm the validity of the usual 5D mixed-formalism and to clarify the UV cut-off procedure. All the conclusions, deduced from regularizing the Higgs peak through a brane shift or a smoothed square profile, are expected to remain similar in realistic models with a warped extra-dimension.

Effect of Anomalous Couplings on the Associated Production of a Single Top Quark and a Higgs Boson at the LHC

We consider the production of a single top quark in association with a Higgs boson at the LHC. In particular, we compute the cross sections for the processes $ p p \to t h j$, $t h b$, $t h W$, $t h j j$, $t h j b$, $t h W j$, $t h W b$ in the presence of the anomalous $Wtb, WWh$ and $tth$ couplings. We find that the anomalous $Wtb$ and $tth$ couplings can enhance the cross sections significantly. We also analyze a few signatures and show that, if these couplings are indeed anomalous, then with enough data, one should be able to observe the production of the Higgs boson in association with single top quark.

Vector meson fragmentation using a model with broken SU(3) at the Next-to-Leading Order

A detailed study of fragmentation of vector mesons at the next-to-leading order (NLO) is given for e^+ e^- scattering. A model with broken SU(3) symmetry uses three input fragmentation functions α(x, Q^2), β(x,Q^2) and γ(x,Q^2) and a strangeness suppression parameter λto describe all the light quark fragmentation functions for the entire vector meson octet. At a starting low energy scale of Q_0^2 = 1.5 GeV^2 for three light quarks (u, d, s) along with initial parameterization, the fragmentation functions are evolved through DGLAP evolution equations at NLO and the cross-section is calculated. The heavy quarks contribution are added in appropriate thresholds during evolution. The results obtained are fitted at the momentum scale of \sqrt{s}= 91.2 GeV for LEP and SLD data. Good-quality fits are obtained for ρ, K^*, ωand ϕmesons, implying the consistency and efficiency of this model that explains the fragmentation functions of vector mesons both at the leading and the next to leading order in QCD. Keywords: vector meson, fragmentation, SU(3) symmetry, NLO .

Probing Color Octet Electrons at the LHC

Models with quark and lepton compositeness predict the existence of colored partners of the Standard Model leptons. In this paper we study the LHC phenomenology of a charged colored lepton partner, namely the color octet electron, $e_8$ in an effective theory framework. We explore various mechanisms for resonant production of $e_8$'s. With the pair production channel the 14 TeV LHC can probe $e_8$'s with masses up to 2.5 TeV (2.8 TeV) with 100 fb$^{-1}$ (300 fb$^{-1}$) of integrated luminosity. A common feature in all the resonant production channels is the presence of two high $p_T$ electrons and at least one high $p_T$ jet in the final state. Using this feature, we implement a search method where the signal is a combination of pair and single production events. This method has potential to increase the LHC reach significantly. Using the combined signal we estimate the LHC discovery potential for the $e_8$'s. Our analysis shows that the LHC with 14 TeV center-of-mass energy and 100 fb$^{-1}$ (300 fb$^{-1}$) of integrated luminosity can probe $e_8$'s with masses up to 3.4 TeV (4 TeV) for the compositeness scale of 5 TeV.

Associated Production of a KK-Graviton with a Higgs Boson via Gluon Fusion at the LHC

In order to solve the hierarchy problem, several extra-dimensional models have received considerable attention. We have considered a process where a Higgs boson is produced in association with a KK-graviton ($G_{\rm KK}$) at the LHC. At the leading order, this process occurs through gluon fusion mechanism $gg \to h G_{\rm KK}$ via a quark loop. We compute the cross section and examine some features of this process in the ADD model. We find that the quark in the loop does not decouple in the large quark-mass limit just as in the case of $gg\to h$ process. We compute the cross section of this process for the case of the RS model also. We examine the feasibility of this process being observed at the LHC.

New physics contributions to the forward-backward asymmetry at the Tevatron

The Tevatron has measured a discrepancy relative to the Standard Model prediction in the forward-backward asymmetry in top quark pair production. This asymmetry grows with the rapidity difference of the two top quarks. It also increases with the invariant mass of the tt pair, reaching, for high invariant masses, 3.4 standard deviations above the Next to Leading Order prediction for the charge asymmetry of QCD. However, perfect agreement between experiment and the Standard Model was found in both total and differential cross section of top quark pair production. As this result could be a sign of new physics we have parametrized this new physics in terms of a complete set of dimension six operators involving the top quark. We have then used a Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach in order to find the best set of parameters that fits the data, using all available data regarding top quark pair production at the Tevatron. We have found that just a very small number of operators are able to fit the data better than the Standard Model.

Testing Unimodular Gravity

We consider models of gravitation that are based on unimodular general coordinate transformations (GCT). These transformations include only those which do not change the determinant of the metric. We treat the determinant as a separate field which transforms as a scalar under unimodular GCT. We consider a class of such theories. In general, these theories do not transform covariantly under the full GCT. We characterize the violation of general coordinate invariance by introducing a new parameter. We show that the theory is consistent with observations for a wide range of this parameter. This parameter may serve as a test for possible violations of general coordinate invariance. We also consider the cosmic evolution within the framework of these models. We show that in general we do not obtain consistent cosmological solutions if we assume the standard cosmological constant or the standard form of non-relativistic matter. We propose a suitable generalization which is consistent with cosmology. We fit the resulting model to the high redshift supernova data. We find that we can obtain a good fit to this data even if include only a single component, either cosmological constant or non-relativistic matter.

Cosmological Perturbation Analysis in a Scale Invariant Model of Gravity

We consider a model for gravity that is invariant under global scale transformations. It includes one extra real scalar field coupled non-minimally to the gravity fields. In this model all the dimensionful parameters like the gravitational constant and the cosmological constant etc. are generated by a solution of the classical equations of motion which breaks scale invariance. In this paper we demonstrate the stability of such a solution against small perturbations in a flat FRW background by making a perturbative expansion around this solution and solving the resulting equations linear in the perturbations.

Production of a KK-graviton in association with a boson via gluon fusion at the LHC

We discuss the processes where a KK-graviton ($G$) of the extra-dimensional models is produced in association with a color singlet boson via gluon fusion at the LHC. In particular, we consider the processes $gg \to h G$, $γG$, $Z G$. These processes occur at one-loop through box and triangle diagrams. The cross-section for the process $gg \to γG$ vanishes at the one-loop level. It can be understood by introducing the charge conjugation transformations of the KK-graviton. The processes $gg \to h G$, $Z G$ can be observed at the LHC if the KK-graviton and the Higgs boson exist with appropriate properties.
