Viaggiu entropy and the generalized second law in a flat FLRW Universe

Our aim, in this paper, is to study the generalized second law by considering the dynamical apparent horizon to be endowed with the Hawking temperature and the Viaggiu entropy introduced in a pioneering work in 2014. We have devoted our attention to a flat FLRW universe filled with a perfect fluid having a constant equation of state $p = wρ$. It is worthwhile to note that we have considered both forms of the Hawking temperature, the original one as well as the truncated version. The latter one is generally used during calculations, however, several arguments have been put forward against it. Our analysis yields a startling result. The Viaggiu entropy naturally forbids the phantom era. In other words, the Viaggiu entropy will never allow the EoS parameter to go beyond the Cosmological Constant. This result is in strong agreement with recent observations and we have deduced it purely by thermodynamic means. This is in striking contrast with the results obtained with the Bekenstein-Hawking formalism.

The Lambert $W$ function: A newcomer in the Cosmology class?

We propose a novel equation of state (EoS) which explains the evolutionary history of a flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) Universe. The uniqueness of this EoS lies in the fact that it incorporates the Lambert $W$ function in a special fashion. It is explicitly demonstrated that with observationally relevant values of the unknown parameters $\vartheta_\mathrm{1}$ and $\vartheta_\mathrm{2}$, all the evolutionary phases of the Universe can be reproduced. Moreover, it also shows that the initial singularity is unavoidable and asserts that the late-time acceleration of the Universe would continue forever.

A closer look at the Barboza-Alcaniz equation of state parametrization

The Barboza-Alcaniz EoS parametrization has been considered and its $q$-parametrization has been investigated in search for a thermodynamic motivation. For this, we have studied the validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics as well as the thermodynamic equilibrium considering the cosmological apparent horizon as the boundary. Also, an expression for the particle creation rate has been obtained in terms of $q$ assuming an adiabatic particle creation scenario and its behavior has been studied for consistency during various phases of evolution of the Universe as suggested by various thermodynamic arguments found in the literature.

Ideal gas with a varying (negative absolute) temperature: An alternative to dark energy?

The present work is an attempt to investigate whether the evolutionary history of the Universe from the offset of inflation can be described by assuming the cosmic fluid to be an ideal gas with a specific gas constant but a varying negative absolute temperature (NAT). The motivation of this work is to search for an alternative to the "exotic" and "supernatural" dark energy (DE). In fact, the NAT works as an "effective quintessence" and there is need to deal neither with exotic matter like DE nor with modified gravity theories. For the sake of completeness, we release some clarifications on NATs in Section 3 of the paper.

Interacting Chaplygin gas revisited

The implications of considering interaction between Chaplygin gas and a barotropic fluid with constant equation of state have been explored. The unique feature of this work is that assuming an interaction $Q \propto Hρ_d$, analytic expressions for the energy density and pressure have been derived in terms of the Hypergeometric $_2\text{F}_1$ function. It is worthwhile to mention that an interacting Chaplygin gas model was considered in 2006 by Zhang and Zhu, nevertheless, analytic solutions for the continuity equations could not be determined assuming an interaction proportional to $H$ times the sum of the energy densities of Chaplygin gas and dust. Our model can successfully explain the transition from the early decelerating phase to the present phase of cosmic acceleration. Arbitrary choice of the free parameters of our model through trial and error show at recent observational data strongly favors $w_m=0$ and $w_m=-\frac{1}{3}$ over the $w_m=\frac{1}{3}$ case. Interestingly, the present model also incorporates the transition of dark energy into the phantom domain, however, future deceleration is forbidden.

Thermodynamic implications of the gravitationally induced particle creation scenario

A rigorous thermodynamic analysis has been done at the apparent horizon of a spatially flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker universe for the gravitationally induced particle creation scenario with constant specific entropy and an arbitrary particle creation rate $Γ$. Assuming a perfect fluid equation of state $p=(γ-1)ρ$ with $\frac{2}{3} \leq γ\leq 2$, the first law, the generalized second law (GSL), and thermodynamic equilibrium have been studied and an expression for the total entropy (i.e., horizon entropy plus fluid entropy) has been obtained which does not contain $Γ$ explicitly. Moreover, a lower bound for the fluid temperature $T_f$ has also been found which is given by $T_f \geq 8\left(\frac{\frac{3γ}{2}-1}{\frac{2}γ-1}\right)H^2$. It has been shown that the GSL is satisfied for $\fracΓ{3H} \leq 1$. Further, when $Γ$ is constant, thermodynamic equilibrium is always possible for $\frac{1}{2}<\fracΓ{3H} < 1$, while for $\fracΓ{3H} \leq \text{min}\left\lbrace \frac{1}{2},\frac{2γ-2}{3γ-2} \right\rbrace$ and $\fracΓ{3H} \geq 1$, equilibrium can never be attained. Thermodynamic arguments also lead us to believe that during the radiation phase, $Γ\leq H$. When $Γ$ is not a constant, thermodynamic equilibrium holds if $\ddot{H} \geq \frac{27}{4}γ^2 H^3 \left(1-\fracΓ{3H}\right)^2$, however, such a condition is by no means necessary for the attainment of equilibrium.

A Study of Universal Thermodynamics in Massive Gravity: Modified Entropy on the Horizons

Universal thermodynamics for FRW model of the Universe bounded by apparent/event horizon has been considered for massive gravity theory. Assuming Hawking temperature and using the unified first law of thermodynamics on the horizon, modified entropy on the horizon has been determined. For simple perfect fluid with constant equation of state, generalized second law of thermodynamics and thermodynamical equilibrium have been examined on both the horizons.

Thermodynamics of the inhomogeneous perfect fluid LTB model: Modified Bekenstein-Hawking system

The present work deals with three alternative generalized Bekenstein-Hawking formulation of thermodynamical parameters namely entropy and temperature for the universal thermodynamical system bounded by a horizon in the frame work of inhomogeneous perfect fluid Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) model of the Universe. For the first choice, the first law of thermodynamics holds only for the trivial de Sitter case of the LTB model while we need restriction on the evolution of the horizon radius for the validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics. However, for the other two choices, the first law of thermodynamics holds with some specific (integral) form of the parameters involved but for generalized LTB models.

Quantum Tunnelling for Hawking Radiation from Both Static and Dynamic Black Holes

The paper deals with Hawking radiation from both a general static black hole and a nonstatic spherically symmetric black hole. In case of static black hole, tunnelling of nonzero mass particles is considered and due to complicated calculations, quantum corrections are calculated only up to the first order. The results are compared with those for massless particles near the horizon. On the other hand, for dynamical black hole, quantum corrections are incorporated using the Hamilton-Jacobi method beyond semiclassical approximation. It is found that different order correction terms satisfy identical differential equation and are solved by a typical technique. Finally, using the law of black hole mechanics, a general modified form of the black hole entropy is obtained considering modified Hawking temperature.

A Study of Universal Thermodynamics in Lanczos-Lovelock gravity

A study of Universal thermodynamics is done in Lanczos-Lovelock gravity. The Universe is chosen as FRW model bounded by apparent or event horizon. The unified first law is examined, assuming extended Hawking temperature on the horizon. As a result there is a modification of Bekenstein entropy on the horizons. Further the validity of generalized second law of thermodynamics and thermodynamical equilibrium are also investigated for perfect fluid (with constant equation of state), modified chaplygin gas model and holographic dark energy model.

Universal thermodynamics in different gravity theories: Conditions for generalized second law of thermodynamics and thermodynamical equilibrium on the horizons

The present work deals with a detailed study of universal thermodynamics in different modified gravity theories. The validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics (GSLT) and thermodynamical equilibrium (TE) of the Universe bounded by a horizon (apparent/event) in f(R)-gravity, Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, RS-II brane scenario and DGP brane model has been investigated. In the perspective of recent observational evidences, the matter in the Universe is chosen as interacting holographic dark energy model. The entropy on the horizons are evaluated from the validity of the unified first law and as a result there is a correction (in integral form) to the usual Bekenstein entropy. The other thermodynamical parameter namely temperature on the horizon is chosen as the recently introduced corrected Hawking temperature. The above thermodynamical analysis is done for homogeneous and isotropic flat FLRW model of the Universe. The restrictions for the validity of GSLT and the TE are presented in tabular form for each gravity theory. Finally, due to complicated expressions, the validity of GSLT and TE are also examined from graphical representation, using three Planck data sets.

Modified Hawking temperature and entropic force: a prescription in FRW model

The idea of Verlinde that gravity is an entropic force caused by information changes associated with the positions of material bodies, is used in the present work for the FRW model of the Universe. Using modified Hawking temperature, the Friedmann equations are derived on any horizon. For the validity of the first law of thermodynamics (i.e., Clausius relation) it is found that there is modification of Bekenstein entropy on the horizon. However, using equipartition law of energy, Bekenstein entropy is recovered.

Does the particle creation mechanism favour the formation of a black hole or a naked singularity?

The paper deals with collapse dynamics of a spherically symmetric massive star in the framework of non-equilibrium themodynamic prescription through particle creation mechanism. The matter content in the star is in the form of perfect uid with barotropic equation of state and the dissipative phenomena due to non-equilibrium thermodynamics is in the form of bulk viscosity. For simplicity, the thermodynamic system is chosen to be adiabatic (i.e., isentropic) so that the effective bulk viscous pressure is linearly related to the particle creation rate. As a result, the evolution of the collapsing star also depends on the particle creation rate. By proper choice of creation rate as a function of the Hubble parameter, it is found that the end state of the collapse may be either a black hole or a naked singularity.

Cosmological thermodynamics with Hawking temperature on the apparent horizon and Unruh temperature of the fluid: Some interesting consequences

Thermodynamics on the cosmological apparent horizon of a flat Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker metric has been investigated with Bekenstein entropy and Hawking temperature on the horizon, and Unruh temperature for the fluid inside the horizon. This temperature is experienced by a radial comoving observer infinitesimally close to the horizon due to the pressure exerted by the fluid bounded by the horizon. An expression for the entropy of the fluid has been obtained which is found to be proportional to the volume of the thermodynamic system which implies that the Unruh temperature of the fluid is inconsistent with the holographic principle. Further, we have been able to find an expression for the effective entropy of the system. Finally, assuming a barotropic equation of state $p=wρ$ ($w$ constant) for the fluid, it has been shown that the generalized second law holds good for a non-phantom w, while thermodynamic equilibrium is never possible for such a scenario.

Particle creation and non-equilibrium thermodynamical prescription of dark fluids for universe bounded by an event horizon

In the present work, flat FRW model of the universe is considered to be an isolated open thermodynamical system where non-equilibrium prescription has been studied using the mechanism of particle creation. In the perspective of recent observational evidences, the matter distribution in the universe is assumed to be dominated by dark matter and dark energy. The dark matter is chosen as dust while for dark energy, the following choices are considered: (i) Perfect fluid with constant equation of state and (ii) Holographic dark energy. In both the cases, the validity of generalized second law of thermodynamics (GSLT) which states that the total entropy of the fluid as well as that of the horizon should not decrease with the evolution of the universe, has been examined graphically for universe bounded by the event horizon. It is found that GSLT holds in both the cases with some restrictions on the interacting coupling parameter.

A redefinition of Hawking temperature on the event horizon: Thermodynamical equilibrium

In this article we have used the recently introduced redefined Hawking temperature on the event horizon and investigated whether the generalised second law of thermodynamics (GSLT) and thermodynamic equilibrium holds for both the event and the apparent horizons. Here we have considered FRW universe and examined the GSLT and thermodynamic equilibrium with three examples. Finally, we have concluded that from the thermodynamic viewpoint, the universe bounded by the event horizon is more realistic than that by the apparent horizon at least for some examples.

Particle Production and Universal Thermodynamics

In the present work, particle creation mechanism has been employed to the Universe as a thermodynamical system. The Universe is considered to be a spatially flat FRW model and cosmic fluid is chosen as a perfect fluid with a barotropic equation of state -- $p = (γ-1)ρ$. By proper choice of the particle creation rate, expressions for the entropy and temperature have been determined at various stages of evolution of the Universe. Finally, using the deceleration parameter $q$ as a function of the redshift parameter $z$ based on recent observations, the particle creation rate has been evaluated and its variation at different epochs have been shown graphically.

A complete cosmic scenario from inflation to late time acceleration: Non-equilibrium thermodynamics in the context of particle creation

The paper deals with the mechanism of particle creation in the framework of irreversible thermodynamics. The second order non-equilibrium thermodynamical prescription of Israel and Stewart has been presented with particle creation rate, treated as the dissipative effect. In the background of a flat FRW model, we assume the non-equilibrium thermodynamical process to be isentropic so that the entropy per particle does not change and consequently the dissipative pressure can be expressed linearly in terms of the particle creation rate. Here the dissipative pressure behaves as a dynamical variable having a non-linear inhomogeneous evolution equation and the entropy flow vector satisfies the second law of thermodynamics. Further, using the Friedmann equations and by proper choice of the particle creation rate as a function of the Hubble parameter, it is possible to show (separately) a transition from the inflationary phase to the radiation era and also from matter dominated era to late time acceleration. Also, in analogy to analytic continuation, it is possible to show a continuous cosmic evolution from inflation to late time acceleration by adjusting the parameters. It is found that in the de Sitter phase, the comoving entropy increases exponentially with time, keeping entropy per particle unchanged. Subsequently, the above cosmological scenarios has been described from field theoretic point of view by introducing a scalar field having self interacting potential. Finally, we make an attempt to show the cosmological phenomenon of particle creation as Hawking radiation, particularly during the inflationary era.
