Self-induced inverse spin Hall effect in La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ films

The efficient generation of spin currents and spin torques via spin-orbit coupling is an important goal of spintronics research. One crucial metric for spin current generation is the spin Hall angle, which is the ratio of the spin Hall current to the transversely flowing charge current. A typical approach to measure the spin Hall angle in nonmagnetic materials is to generate spin currents via spin pumping in an adjacent ferromagnetic layer and measure the transverse voltage from the inverse spin Hall effect in the nonmagnetic layer. However, given that the spin Hall effect also occurs in ferromagnets, single ferromagnetic layers could generate a self-induced transverse voltage during spin pumping as well. Here we show that manganite based La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) films deposited by pulsed laser deposition exhibit a significant self-induced inverse spin Hall voltage while undergoing spin pumping. We observe efficient spin to charge conversion in the LSMO films via the inverse spin Hall effect. A spin pumping voltage of 1.86 $μ$V is observed in the LSMO (12 nm) film. Using density functional theory and the Kubo formalism, we calculate the intrinsic spin current conductivities of these films and show that they are in reasonable agreement with the experimental measurements.

Driving skyrmions with low threshold current density in Pt/CoFeB thin film

Magnetic skyrmions are topologically stable spin swirling particle like entities which are appealing for next generation spintronic devices. The expected low critical current density for the motion of skyrmions makes them potential candidates for future energy efficient electronic devices. Several heavy metal/ferromagnetic (HM/FM) systems have been explored in the past decade to achieve faster skyrmion velocity at low current densities. In this context, we have studied Pt/CoFeB/MgO heterostructures in which skyrmions have been stabilized at room temperature (RT). It has been observed that the shape of the skyrmions are perturbed even by the small stray field arising from low moment magnetic tips while performing the magnetic force microscopy (MFM), indicating presence of low pinning landscape in the samples. This hypothesis is indeed confirmed by the low threshold current density to drive the skyrmions in our sample, at velocities of few 10m/s.

Degenerate skyrmionic states in synthetic antiferromagnets

Topological magnetic textures, characterized by integer topological charge $S$, are potential candidates in future magnetic logic and memory devices, due to their smaller size and expected low threshold current density for their motion. An essential requirement to stabilize them is the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) which promotes a particular chirality, leading to a unique value of $S$ in a given material. However, recently coexistence of skyrmions and antiskyrmions, with opposite topological charge, in frustrated ferromagnets has been predicted using $J_1$--$J_2$--$J_3$ classical Heisenberg model, which opens new perspectives, to use the topological charge as an additional degree of freedom. In this work, we propose another approach of using a synthetic antiferromagnetic (SAF) system, where one of the ferromagnetic (FM) layer has isotropic and the other FM layer has anisotropic DMI to promote the existence of skyrmions and antiskyrmions, respectively. A frustrated interaction arises due to the coupling between the magnetic textures in the FM layers, which enables the stabilization and coexistence of 6 novel elliptical topological textures.

Magnetoelastic anisotropy in Heusler-type Mn$_{2-δ}$CoGa$_{1+δ}$ films

Perpendicular magnetization is essential for high-density memory application using magnetic materials. High-spin polarization of conduction electrons is also required for realizing large electric signals from spin-dependent transport phenomena. Heusler alloy is a well-known material class showing the half-metallic electronic structure. However, its cubic lattice nature favors in-plane magnetization and thus minimizes the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), in general. This study focuses on an inverse-type Heusler alloy, Mn$_{2-δ}$CoGa$_{1+δ}$ (MCG) with a small off-stoichiometry ($δ$) , which is expected to be a half-metallic material. We observed relatively large uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant ($K_\mathrm{u}$) of the order of 10$^5$ J/m$^3$ at room temperature in MCG films with a small tetragonal distortion of a few percent. A positive correlation was confirmed between the $c/a$ ratio of lattice constants and $K_\mathrm{u}$. Imaging of magnetic domains using Kerr microscopy clearly demonstrated a change in the domain patterns along with $K_\mathrm{u}$. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) was employed using synchrotron radiation soft x-ray beam to get insight into the origin for PMA. Negligible angular variation of orbital magnetic moment ($Δm_\mathrm{orb}$) evaluated using the XMCD spectra suggested a minor role of the so-called Bruno's term to $K_\mathrm{u}$. Our first principles calculation reasonably explained the small $Δm_\mathrm{orb}$ and the positive correlation between the $c/a$ ratio and $K_\mathrm{u}$. The origin of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy was discussed based on the second-order perturbation theory in terms of the spin--orbit coupling, claiming that the mixing of the occupied $\uparrow$- and the unoccupied $\downarrow$-spin states is responsible for the PMA of the MCG films.

Magnetization reversal and domain structures in perpendicular synthetic antiferromagnets prepared on rigid and flexible substrates

Ferromagnetic (FM) layers separated by nonmagnetic metallic spacer layers can exhibit Ruderman Kittel Kasuya Yosida (RKKY) coupling which may lead to a stable synthetic antiferromagnetic (SAF) phase. In this article we study magnetization reversal in [Co/Pt] layers by varying the number of bilayer stacks (Pt/Co) as well as thickness of Ir space layer tIr on rigid Si(100) and flexible polyimide substrates. The samples with tIr = 1.0 nm shows a FM coupling whereas samples with tIr = 1.5 nm shows an AFM coupling between the FM layers. At tIr = 2.0 nm, it shows a bow-tie shaped hysteresis loop indicating a canting of magnetization at the reversal. Higher anisotropy energy as compared to the interlayer exchange coupling (IEC) energy is an indication of the smaller relative angle between the magnetization of lower and upper FM layers. We have also demonstrated the strain induced modification of IEC as well as magnetization reversal phenomena. The IEC shows a slight decrease upon application of compressive strain and increase upon application of tensile strain which indicates the potential of SAFs in flexible spintronics.

Spinterface Induced Modification in Magnetic Properties in Co40Fe40B20/Fullerene Bilayers

Organic semiconductor/ferromagnetic bilayer thin films can exhibit novel properties due to the formation of the spinterface at the interface. Buckminsterfullerene (C60) has been shown to exhibit ferromagnetism at the interface when it is placed next to a ferromagnet (FM) such as Fe or Co. Formation of spinterface occurs due to the orbital hybridization and spin polarized charge transfer at the interface. In this work, we have demonstrated that one can enhance the magnetic anisotropy of the low Gilbert damping alloy CoFeB by introducing a C60 layer. We have shown that anisotropy increases by increasing the thickness of C60 which might be a result of the formation of spinterface. However, the magnetic domain structure remains same in the bilayer samples as compared to the reference CoFeB film.

Spin pumping and inverse spin Hall effect in CoFeB/C$_{60}$ bilayers

Pure spin current based research is mostly focused on ferromagnet (FM)/heavy metal (HM) system. Because of the high spin orbit coupling (SOC) these HMs exhibit short spin diffusion length and therefore possess challenges for device application. Low SOC (elements of light weight) and large spin diffusion length make the organic semiconductors (OSCs) suitable for future spintronic applications. From theoretical model it is explained that, due to $π$ - $σ$ hybridization the curvature of the C$_{60}$ molecules may increase the SOC strength. Here, we have investigated spin pumping and inverse spin hall effect (ISHE) in CoFeB/C$_{60}$ bilayer system using coplanar wave guide based ferromagnetic resonance (CPW-FMR) set-up. We have performed angle dependent ISHE measurement to disentangle the spin rectification effects for example anisotropic magnetoresistance, anomalous Hall effect etc. Further, effective spin mixing conductance (g$_{eff}^{\uparrow\downarrow}$) and spin Hall angle ($θ_{SH}$) for C$_{60}$ have been reported here. The evaluated value for $θ_{SH}$ is 0.055.

Device geometry dependent deterministic skyrmion generation from a skyrmionium

A magnetic skyrmionium can be perceived as an association of two magnetic skyrmions with opposite topological charges. In this work, we have investigated the transformation of skyrmionium into multi-skyrmionic states via domain wall (DW) pairs in three different devices with variable geometric configurations. The same device geometries were considered for single ferromagnetic layer as well as synthetic antiferromagnetic (SAF) system. It is observed that by tuning the current density, deterministic generation of skyrmions is possible via the spin transfer torque (STT). The proposed device is efficiently adjustable to change the number of skyrmions . The results may lead to development of skyrmion-based devices for neuromorphic and unconventional computing.

Enhancement of in-plane anisotropy in MoS2/CoFeB bilayers

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) possess novel properties which makes them potential candidates for various spintronic applications. Heterostructures of TMD with magnetic thin film have been extensively considered for spin-orbital torque, enhancement of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy etc. However, the effect of TMD on magnetic anisotropy in heterostructures of in-plane magnetization has not been studied so far. Further the effect of the TMD on the domain structure and magnetization reversal of the ferromagnetic system is another important aspect to be understood. In this context we study the effect of MoS2, a well-studied TMD material, on magnetic properties of CoFeB in MoS2/CoFeB heterostructures. The reference CoFeB film possess a weak in-plane anisotropy. However, when the CoFeB is deposited on MoS2 the in-plane anisotropy is enhanced as observed from magneto optic Kerr effect (MOKE) microscopy as well as ferromagnetic resonance (FMR). Magnetic domain structure and magnetization reversal have also been significantly modified for the MoS2/CoFeB bilayer as compared to the reference CoFeB layer. Frequency and angle dependent FMR measurement show that the magnetic anisotropy of CoFeB increases with increase in thickness of MoS2 in the MoS2/CoFeB heterostructures.

Spin pumping and inverse spin Hall effect in CoFeB/IrMn heterostructures

High spin to charge conversion efficiency is the requirement for the spintronics devices which is governed by spin pumping and inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE). In last one decade, ISHE and spin pumping are heavily investigated in ferromagnet/ heavy metal (HM) heterostructures. Recently antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials are found to be good replacement of HMs because AFMs exhibit terahertz spin dynamics, high spin-orbit coupling, and absence of stray field. In this context we have performed the ISHE in CoFeB/ IrMn heterostructures. Spin pumping study is carried out for $Co_{40}Fe_{40}B_{20} (12\ nm)/ Cu (3\ nm)/ Ir_{50}Mn_{50} (t\ nm)/ AlO_{x} (3\ nm)$ samples where \textit{t} value varies from 0 to 10 nm. Damping of all the samples are higher than the single layer CoFeB which indicates that spin pumping due to IrMn is the underneath mechanism. Further the spin pumping in the samples are confirmed by angle dependent ISHE measurements. We have also disentangled other spin rectifications effects and found that the spin pumping is dominant in all the samples. From the ISHE analysis the real part of spin mixing conductance (\textit{$g_{r}^{\uparrow \downarrow}$}) is found to be 0.704 $\pm$ 0.003 $\times$ $10^{18}$ $m^{-2}$.

Effect of Fullerene on domain size and relaxation in a perpendicularly magnetized Pt/Co/C60/Pt system

Buckminsterfullerene (C60) can exhibit ferromagnetism at the interface (called as a spinterface) when it is placed next to a ferromagnet (FM). Formation of such spinterface happens due to orbital hybridization and spin polarized charge transfer at the interface. The spinterface can influence the domain size and dynamics of the organic/ferromagnetic heterostructure. Here, we have performed magnetic domain imaging and studied the relaxation dynamics in Pt/Co/C60/Pt system with perpendicular anisotropy. We have compared the results with its parent Pt/Co/Pt system. It is observed that presence of C60 in the Pt/Co/Pt system increases the anisotropy and a decrease in the bubble domain size. Further the switching time of Pt/Co/C60/Pt system is almost two times faster than Pt/Co/Pt system. We have also performed the spin polarized density functional theory (DFT) calculations to understand the underneath mechanism. DFT results show formation of a spin polarized spinterface which leads to an enhancement in anisotropy.

Magnetism at the interface of non-magnetic Cu and C$_{60}$

The signature of magnetism without a ferromagnet in a non-magnetic heterostructure is novel as well as fascinating from fundamental research point of view. It has been shown by Al'Mari et al: that magnetism can be induced at the interface of Cu/C60 due to change in density of states. However, the quantification of such interfacial magnetic moment has not been performed yet. In order to quantify the induced magnetic moment in Cu, we have performed X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements on Cu/C$_{60}$ multilayers. We have observed room temperature ferromagnetism in Cu/C$_{60}$ stack. Further XMCD measurements show that ~0.01 $μ_B$/atom magnetic moment has been induced in Cu at the Cu/C$_{60}$ interface.

Effect of spin glass frustration on exchange bias in NiMn/CoFeB bilayers

Exchange bias in ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic systems can be explained in terms of various interfacial phenomena. Among these spin glass frustration can affect the magnetic properties in exchange bias systems. Here we have studied a NiMn/CoFeB exchange bias system in which spin glass frustration seems to play a crucial role. In order to account the effect of spin glass frustration on magnetic properties, we have performed the temperature and cooling field dependence of exchange bias. We have observed the decrease of exchange bias field (HEB) with cooling field (HFC) whereas there is not significant effect on coercive field (HC). Exponential decay of HEB and HC is found in these exchange bias systems. Further, training effect measurements have been performed to study the spin relaxation mechanism. We have fitted the training effect data with frozen and rotatable spin relaxation model. We have investigated the ratio of relaxation rate of interfacial rotatable and frozen spins in this study. The training effect data are also fitted with various other models. Further, we observed the shifting of peak temperature towards higher temperature with frequency from the ac susceptibility data.

Simultaneous observation of anti-damping and inverse spin Hall effect in La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$/Pt bilayer system

Manganites have shown potential in spintronics because they exhibit high spin polarization. Here, by ferromagnetic resonance we have studied the damping properties of La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$/Pt bilayers which are prepared by oxide molecular beam epitaxy. The damping coefficient ($α$) of La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) single layer is found to be 0.0104. However the LSMO/Pt bilayers exhibit decrease in $α$ with increase in Pt thickness. This decrease in the value of $α$ is probably due to high anti-damping like torque. Further, we have investigated the angle dependent inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) to quantify the spin pumping voltage from other spin rectification effects such as anomalous Hall effect and anisotropic magnetoresistance. We have observed high spin pumping voltage ($\sim$~20 $ μV$). The results indicate that both anti-damping and spin pumping phenomena are occuring simultaneously.

Spin pumping and inverse spin Hall effect in iridium oxide

Large charge-to-spin conversion (spin Hall angle) and spin Hall conductivity are prerequisites for development of next generation power efficient spintronic devices. In this context, heavy metals (e.g. Pt, W etc.), topological insulators, antiferromagnets are usually considered because they exhibit high spin-orbit coupling (SOC). In addition to the above materials, 5d transition metal oxide e.g. Iridium Oxide (IrO 2 ) is a potential candidate which exhibits high SOC strength. Here we report a study of spin pumping and inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE), via ferromagnetic resonance (FMR), in IrO 2 /CoFeB system. We identify the individual contribution of spin pumping and other spin rectification effects in the magnetic layer, by investigating the in-plane angular dependence of ISHE signal. Our analysis shows significant contribution of spin pumping effect to the ISHE signal. We show that polycrystalline IrO 2 thin film exhibits high spin Hall conductivity and spin Hall angle which are comparable to the values of Pt.

Skyrmion Racetrack memory with an antidot

Skyrmion racetrack memory has a lots of potential in future non-volatile solid state devices. In general such devices require current to nucleate skyrmions via spin transfer torque (STT) effect. Further the current is also required to drive the skyrmions in the nanowire device. However the current applied during nucleation of successive skyrmions may have unwanted perturbation \emph{viz.} Joule heating and skyrmion Hall effect, on the propagation of previously generated skyrmions. Therefore new methodology is required to decouple the generation and propagation of skyrmions. Here we present a novel route via micromagnetic simulation for generation of skyrmions from triangular antidot structure in a ferromagnetic nanotrack using local oersted field. Antidots are holes in a magnetic nanoelement. Controlled skyrmion injection can be achieved by tuning the dimensions of the antidots that are placed at either end of the nanotrack. Multiple skyrmions can be simultaneously generated by incorporating more number of antidots. Here we propose a novel design to realise skyrmionic racetrcak memory where one can individually generate and manipulate the skyrmions within the nanotrack.

Study of magnetic interface and its effect in Fe/NiFe bilayers of alternating order

We present a comprehensive study on the magnetization reversal in Fe/NiFe bilayer system by alternating the order of the magnetic layers. All the samples show growth-induced uniaxial magnetic anisotropy due to oblique angle deposition technique. Strong interfacial exchange coupling between the Fe and NiFe layers leads to the single-phase hysteresis loops in the bilayer system. The strength of coupling being dependent on the interface changes upon alternating the order of magnetic layers. The magnetic parameters such as coercivity HC, and anisotropy field HK become almost doubled when NiFe layer is grown over the Fe layers. This enhancement in the magnetic parameters is primarily dependent on the increase of the thickness and magnetic moment of Fe-NiFe interfacial layer as revealed from the polarized neutron reectivity (PNR) data of the bilayer samples. The difference in the thickness and magnetization of the Fe-NiFe interfacial layer indicates the modification of the microstructure by alternating the order of the magnetic layers of the bilayers. The interfacial magnetic moment increased by almost 18 % when NiFe layer is grown over the Fe layer. In spite of the different values of anisotropy fields and modified interfacial exchange coupling, the Gilbert damping constant values of the ferromagnetic bilayers remain similar to single NiFe layer.

Effect of random anisotropy in stabilization of topological chiral textures

Ever increasing demand of skyrmion manipulation in nanodevices has brought up interesting research to 8 understand the stabilization of these topologically protected chiral structures. To understand the actual shape 9 and size of skyrmion observed experimentally, we have performed micromagnetic simulations to investigate 10 skyrmion stabilization in presence of random anisotropy in magnetic thin film system. Previous experimental 11 reports of skyrmion imaging in thin films depicts that the skyrmion shape is not perfectly circular. Here we 12 show via simulations that the shape of a skyrmion can get distorted due to the presence of different local 13 anisotropy energy. The values of uniaxial anisotropy constant (Ku) and random aniostropy constant (Kr) 14 are varied to understand the change in shape and size of a skyrmion and an antiskyrmion stabilized in a 15 square magnetic nanoelement. The skyrmion shape gets distorted and the size gets constant for high random 16 anisotropy energy in the system.
