Valence and Spin fluctuations in Mn-doped ferroelectric BaTiO3

We study Mn substitution for Ti in BaTiO3 with and without compensating oxygen vacancies using density functional theory (DFT) in combination with dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). We find strong charge and spin fluctuations. Without compensating oxygen vacancies, the ground state is found to be a quantum superposition of two distinct atomic valences, 3d4 and 3d5. Introducing a compensating oxygen vacancy at a neighboring site reduces both charge and spin fluctuations due to the reduction of electron hopping from Mn to its ligands. As a consequence, valence fluctuations are reduced, and is closely fixed to the high spin 3d5 state. Here we show that inclusion of charge and spin fluctuations is necessary to obtain an accurate ground state of transition metal doped ferroelectrics.

How correlated is the FeSe/SrTiO$_3$ system ?

Recent observation of $\sim$ 10 times higher critical temperature in FeSe monolayer compared with its bulk phase has drawn a great deal of attention because the electronic structure in the monolayer phase appears to be different than bulk FeSe. Using a combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean field theory, we find electronic correlations have important effects on the predicted atomic-scale geometry and the electronic structure of the monolayer FeSe on SrTiO$_3$. The electronic correlations are dominantly controlled by the Se-Fe-Se angle either in the bulk phase or the monolayer phase. But the angle sensitivity increases and the orbital differentiation decreases in the monolayer phase compared to the bulk phase. The correlations are more dependent on Hund's J than Hubbard U. The observed orbital selective incoherence to coherence crossover with temperature confirms the Hund's metallic nature of the monolayer FeSe. We also find electron doping by oxygen vacancies in SrTiO$_3$ increases the correlation strength, especially in the $d_{xy}$ orbital by reducing the Se-Fe-Se angle.

The role of double TiO2 layers at the interface of FeSe/SrTiO3 superconductors

We determine the surface reconstruction of SrTiO3 used to achieve superconducting FeSe films in experiments, which is different from the 1x1 TiO2 terminated SrTiO3 assumed by most previous theoretical studies. In particular, we identify the existence of a double TiO2 layer at the SrTiO3-FeSe interface that plays two important roles. First, it facilitates the epitaxial growth of FeSe. Second, ab initio calculations reveal a strong tendency for electrons to transfer from an oxygen deficient SrTiO3 surface to FeSe when the double TiO2 layer is present. As a better electron donor than previously proposed interfacial structures, the double layer helps to remove the hole pocket in the FeSe at the Γ point of the Brillouin zone and leads to a band structure characteristic of superconducting samples. The characterization of the interface structure presented here is a key step towards the resolution of many open questions about this novel superconductor.

Pressure Suppression of Electron Correlation in the Collapsed Tetragonal Phase of $CaFe_2As_2$ : A DFT-DMFT Investigation

Recent studies reveal a pressure induced transition from a paramagnetic tetragonal phase (T) to a collapsed tetragonal phase (CT) in $CaFe_2As_2$, which was found to be superconducting with non-hydrostatic pressure at low temperature. We have investigated the effects of electron correlation and local fluctuating moment in both tetragonal and collapsed tetragonal phases of the paramagnetic $CaFe_2As_2$ using self consistent DFT+DMFT with continuous time quantum Monte Carlo as the impurity solver. From the computed optical conductivity, we find a gain in the optical kinetic energy due to the loss in Hund's rule coupling energy in the CT. We find that the transition from T to CT turns $CaFe_2As_2$ from a bad metal into a good metal. Computed mass enhancement and local moments also show significant decrease in the CT, which confirms the suppression of the electron correlation in the CT phase of $CaFe_2As_2$.

Strong Pressure Dependent Electron-Phonon Coupling in FeSe

We have computed the correlated electronic structure of FeSe and its dependence on the A1g mode versus compression. Using the self-consistent density functional theory - dynamical mean field theory (DFT-DMFT) with continuous time quantum Monte Carlo (CTQMC), we find that there is greatly enhanced coupling between some correlated electron states and the A1g lattice distortion. Superconductivity in FeSe shows a very strong sensitivity to pressure, with an increase in Tc of almost a factor of 5 within a few GPa, followed by a drop, despite monotonic pressure dependence of almost all electronic properties. We find that the maximum A1g deformation potential behaves similar to the experimental Tc. In contrast, the maximum deformation potential in DFT for this mode increases monotonically with increasing pressure.

Mechanism behind the switching of current induced by a gate field in a semiconducting nanowire junction

We propose a new orbital controlled model to explain the gate field induced switching of current in a semiconducting PbS-nanowire junction. A single particle scattering formalism in conjunction with a posteriori density functional approach involving hybrid functional is used to study the electronic current; both first and higher order Stark effects are explicitly treated in our model. Our calculation reveals that after a threshold gate-voltage, orbital mixing produces p-components at the S atoms in the participating orbitals. This results in an inter-layer orbital interaction that allows electron to delocalize along the channel axis. As a consequence a higher conductance state is found. A similar feature is also found in a PbSe nanowire junction, which suggests that this model can be used universally to explain the gate field induced switching of current in lead-chalcogenide nanowire junctions.

Quantum Confinement and Phase Transition in PbS nanowire

We report first principles density functional calculations of electronic structures and energy bandgaps ($ΔE_g$) in PbS nanowires (NW). The $ΔE_g$ is tuned by varying the diameter of the NW - {\it revealing the role of quantum confinement}. The compressive radial strain (CS) on the NW is shown to be responsible for semiconducting to metallic phase transition. The conduction band (CB) of the NW, which has significant contribution from the excited 3{\it d}-orbital of S, is found to be more sensitive to the CS with the CB minimum shifting towards and eventually crossing the Fermi energy with increasing CS. The origin of the observed phase transition in a recent experiment is attributed to the CS on the PbS nanowire.

Theoretical spectroscopic studies of the atomic transitions and lifetimes of low-lying states in Ti IV

The astrophysically important electric quadrupole (E2) and magnetic dipole (M1) transitions for the low-lying states of triply ionized titanium (Ti IV) are calculated very accurately using a state-of-art all-order many-body theory called Coupled Cluster (CC) theory in the relativistic frame-work. Different many-body correlations of the CC theory has been estimated by studying the core and valence electron excitations to the unoccupied states. The calculated excitation energies of different states are in very good agreement with the measurements. Also we compare our calculated electric dipole (E1) transition amplitudes of few transitions with recent many-body calculations by different groups. We have also carried out the calculations for the lifetimes of the low-lying states of Ti IV. A long lifetime is found for the first excited 3d$^{2}D_{5/2}$ state, which suggested that Ti IV may be one of the useful candidates for many important studies. Most of the results reported here are not available in the literature, to the best of our knowledge.
