Constraints on TeV scale Majorana neutrino phenomenology from the Vacuum Stability of the Higgs

The vacuum stability condition of the Standard Model Higgs potential with mass in the range of 124-127 GeV puts an upper bound on the Dirac mass of the neutrinos. We study this constraint with the right-handed neutrino masses upto TeV scale. The heavy neutrinos contribute to $ΔL=2$ processes like neutrinoless double beta decay and same-sign-dilepton production in the colliders. The vacuum stability criterion also restricts the light-heavy neutrino mixing and constrains the branching ratio of lepton flavour violating process, like $μ\to e γ$ mediated by the heavy neutrinos. We show that neutrinoless double beta decay with a lifetime $\sim 10^{25}$ years can be observed if the the lightest heavy neutrino mass is $<$ 4.5 TeV. We show that the vacuum stability condition and the experimental bound on $μ\rightarrow e γ$ together put a constrain on heavy neutrino mass $M_R >$ 3.3 TeV. Finally we show that the observation of same-sign-dileptons (SSD) associated with jets at the LHC needs much larger luminosity than available at present. We have estimated the possible maximum cross-section for this process at the LHC and show that with an integrated luminosity 100 $fb^{-1}$ it may be possible to observe the SSD signals as long as $M_R <$ 400 GeV.

Neutrino processes with power law dispersion relations

We compute various processes involving neutrinos in the initial and/or final state and we assume that neutrinos have energy momentum relation with a general power law $E^2 =p^2+ ξ_n p^n$ correction due to Lorentz invariance violation. We find that for $n>2$ the bounds on $ξ_n$ from direct time of flight measurement are much more stringent than from constraining the neutrino Cerenkov decay process.

Warm natural inflation

In warm inflation models there is the requirement of generating large dissipative couplings of the inflaton with radiation, while at the same time, not de-stabilising the flatness of the inflaton potential due to radiative corrections. One way to achieve this without fine tuning unrelated couplings is by supersymmetry. In this paper we show that if the inflaton and other light fields are Pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone Bosons then the radiative corrections to the potential are suppressed and the thermal corrections are small as long as the temperature is below the symmetry breaking scale. In such models it is possible to fulfill the contrary requirements of an inflaton potential which is stable under radiative corrections and the generation of a large dissipative coupling of the inflaton field with other light fields. We construct a warm inflation model which gives the observed CMB-anisotropy amplitude and spectral index where the symmetry breaking is at the GUT scale.

Constraint on super-luminal neutrinos from vacuum Cerenkov processes

We examine the Cerenkov-like emission of $e^+ e^-$ from muon super-luminal muon neutrinos assuming a quadratic energy dependence of the neutrino velocity arising from Lorentz violating interactions. We find that with the OPERA result for the neutrino-photon velocity difference, the decay length for the process $ν_μ\rightarrow ν_μe^+ e^-$ is 17,039 km which is much larger than the OPERA neutrinos path length of 730 km. We also calculate the pion rate for super-luminal outgoing neutrinos, and we find that the deviation of the pion decay length from the standard Lorentz conserving case at the OPERA neutrino energy is 2%. We conclude that if the muon-neutrino velocity has a quadratic energy dependence, then OPERA result is consistent with non-observation of forbidden neutrino decays and large deviations from the standard pion decay lifetime.

Generation of scale invariant density perturbations in a conformally invariant Inert Higgs doublet model

If a Higgs field is conformally coupled to gravity, then it can give rise to the scale invariant density perturbations. We make use of this result in a realistic inert Higgs doublet model, where we have a pair of Higgs doublets conformally coupled to the gravity in the early universe. The perturbation of the inert Higgs is shown to be the scale invariant. This gives rise to the density perturbation observed through CMB by its couplings to the standard model Higgs and the subsequent decay. Loop corrections of this conformally coupled system gives rise to electroweak symmetry breaking. We constrain the couplings of the scalar potential by comparing with the amplitude and spectrum of CMB anisotropy measured by WMAP and this model leads to a prediction for the masses of the lightest Higgs and the other scalars.

Leptogenesis by curvature coupling of heavy neutrinos

We introduce a CP violating coupling between the Ricci curvature and the heavy right handed neutrinos. This splits the Majorana masses of the left and the right handed heavy neutrinos. When the heavy neutrinos decay, their decay rates are different into left and right chirality light neutrinos. A time varying non-zero Ricci curvature can give rise to a net lepton asymmetry. The source of a non-zero curvature in a radiation era is the quantum fluctations of primordial fields.

VSR is incompatible with Thomas precession

Glashow and Cohen make the interesting observation that certain proper subgroups of the Lorentz group like HOM(2) or SIM(2) can explain many results of special relativity like time dilation, relativistic velocity addition and a maximal isotropic speed of light. We show here that such SIM(2) and HOM(2) based VSR theories predict an incorrect value for the Thomas precession and are therefore ruled out by observations. In VSR theories the spin-orbital coupling in atoms turn out to be too large by a factor of 2. The Thomas-BMT equation derived from VSR predicts a precession of electrons and muons in storage rings which is too large by a factor of $10^3$. VSR theories are therefore ruled out by observations.

Dark energy from Neutrinos and Standard Model Higgs potential

If neutrino mass is a function of the Higgs potential then minimum of the total thermodynamic potential $Ω$ (which is the Higgs potential minus the neutrino pressure) can shift from the standard electro-weak vev $v=246.2$ GeV by a small amount which depends on the neutrino pressure. If the neutrino mass is a very steep function of the Higgs field then the equilibrium thermodynamic potential can act like the dark energy with $ω\simeq -1$. Choosing the neutrino mass as logarithmic function of the Higgs field and a heavy mass scale, we find that the correct magnitude of the cosmological density of the present universe $ρ_λ\simeq (0.002 eV)^4$ is obtained by choosing the heavy mass at the GUT scale.

Magnetic field generation in Higgs inflation model

We study the generation of magnetic field in Higgs-inflation models where the Standard Model Higgs boson has a large coupling to the Ricci scalar. We couple the Higgs field to the Electromagnetic fields via a non- renormalizable dimension six operator suppressed by the Planck scale in the Jordan frame. We show that during Higgs inflation magnetic fields with present value $10^{-6}$ Gauss and comoving coherence length of $100 kpc$ can be generated in the Einstein frame. The problem of large back-reaction which is generic in the usual inflation models of magneto-genesis is avoided as the back-reaction is suppressed by the large Higgs-curvature coupling.

Non-Gaussianity as a signature of thermal initial condition of inflation

We study non-Gaussianities in the primordial perturbations in single field inflation where there is radiation era prior to inflation. Inflation takes place when the energy density of radiation drops below the value of the potential of a coherent scalar field. We compute the thermal average of the two, three and four point correlation functions of inflaton fluctuations. The three point function is proportional to the slow roll parameters and there is an amplification in $f_{NL}$ by a factor of 65 to 90 due to the contribution of the thermal bath, and we conclude that the bispectrum is in the range of detectability with the 21-cm anisotropy measurements. The four point function on the other hand appears in this case due to the thermal averaging and the fact that thermal averaging of four-point correlation is not the same as the square of the thermal averaging of the two-point function. Due to this fact $τ_{NL}$ is not proportional to the slow-roll parameters and can be as large as -42. The non-Gaussianities in the four point correlation of the order 10 can also be detected by 21-cm background observations. We conclude that a signature of thermal inflatons is a large trispectrum non-Gaussianity compared to the bispectrum non-Gaussianity.

Signature of short distance physics on inflation power spectrum and CMB anisotropy

The inflaton field responsible for inflation may not be a canonical fundamental scalar. It is possible that the inflaton is a composite of fermions or it may have a decay width. In these cases the standard procedure for calculating the power spectrum is not applicable and a new formalism needs to be developed to determine the effect of short range interactions of the inflaton on the power spectrum and the CMB anisotropy. We develop a general formalism for computing the power spectrum of curvature perturbations for such non-canonical cases by using the flat space Källén-Lehmann spectral function in curved quasi-de Sitter space assuming implicitly that the Bunch-Davis boundary conditions enforces the inflaton mode functions to be plane wave in the short wavelength limit and a complete set of mode functions exists in quasi-de Sitter space. It is observed that the inflaton with a decay width suppresses the power at large scale while a composite inflaton's power spectrum oscillates at large scales. These observations may be vindicated in the WMAP data and confirmed by future observations with PLANCK.

Constraints on background torsion from birefringence of CMB polarization

We show that a non-minimal coupling of electromagnetism with background torsion can produce birefringence of the electromagnetic waves. This birefringence gives rise to a B-mode polarization of the CMB. From the bounds on B-mode from WMAP and BOOMERanG data, one can put limits on the background torsion at $ξ_{1}T_{1}=(-3.35 \pm 2.65) \times 10^{-22} GeV^{-1}$.

Dipolar Dark Matter

If dark matter (DM) has non-zero direct or transition, electric or magnetic dipole moment then it can scatter nucleons electromagnetically in direct detection experiments. Using the results from experiments like XENON, CDMS, DAMA and COGENT we put bounds on the electric and magnetic dipole moments of DM. If DM consists of Dirac fermions with direct dipole moments, then DM of mass less than 10 GeV is consistent with the DAMA signal and with null results of other experiments. If on the other hand DM consists of Majorana fermions then they can have only non-zero transition moments between different mass eigenstates. We find that Majorana fermions with mass m_χ> 38 GeV and mass splitting of the order of (50-200) keV can explain the DAMA signal and the null observations from other experiments and in addition give the observed relic density of DM by dipole-mediated annihilation. This parameter space for the mass and for dipole moments is allowed by limits from L3 but may have observable signals at LHC.

Natural inflation at the GUT scale

Natural inflation driven by Pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons have a problem that the nearly scale invariant spectrum of density perturbations is attained only when the symmetry breaking scale is of the order of Planck scale. We show here that if one couples the PNGB to a thermal bath as in warm inflation models, the amplitude and spectral index which agrees with the WMAP data is obtained with the symmetry breaking in the GUT scale. We give a GUT model of PNGB arising out of spontaneously broken lepton number at the GUT scale which gives rise to heavy Majorana masses for the right handed neutrinos which is needed in see-saw models. This model also generates a lepton asymmetry because of the derivative coupling of the PNGB to the lepton current. A characteristic feature of this model is the prediction of large non-gaussianity which may be observed in the forthcoming PLANCK experiment.

Test of unparticle long range forces from perihelion precession of Mercury

Unparticle exchange gives rise to long range forces which deviate from the inverse square law due to non-canonical dimension of unparticles. It is well known that a potential of the form $r^{-n}$ where $n$ is not equal to one gives rise to a precession in the perihelion of planetary orbits. We calculate the constraints on unparticle couplings with baryons and leptons from the observations of perihelion advance of Mercury orbit.

Imprint of spatial curvature on inflation power spectrum

If the universe had a large curvature before inflation there is a deviation from the scale invariant perturbations of the inflaton at the beginning of inflation. This may have some effect on the CMB anisotropy at large angular scales. We calculate the density perturbations for both open and closed universe cases using the Bunch-Davies vacuum condition on the initial state. We use our power spectrum to calculate the temperature anisotropy spectrum and compare the results with the WMAP three year data. We find that our power spectrum gives a lower quadrupole anisotropy when $Ω-1 >0$, but matches the temperature anisotropy calculated from the standard Ratra-Peebles power spectrum at large $l$. The determination of spatial curvature from temperature anisotropy data is not much affected by the different power spectra which arise from the choice of different boundary conditions for the inflaton perturbation.

Prospects for GMRT to Observe Radio Waves from UHE Particles Interacting with the Moon

Ultra high energy (UHE) particles of cosmic origin impact the lunar regolith and produce radio signals through Askaryan effect, signals that can be detected by Earth based radio telescopes. We calculate the expected sensitivity for observation of such events at the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), both for UHE cosmic rays (CR) and UHE neutrino interactions. We find that for 30 days of observation time a significant number of detectable events is expected above $10^{20}$ eV for UHECR or neutrino fluxes close to the current limits. Null detection over a period of 30 days will lower the experimental bounds on UHE particle fluxes by magnitudes competitive to both present and future experiments at the very highest energies.

Gravitational Leptogenesis

We introduce a dimension five CP violating coupling between the Ricci scalar and fermions. This operator splits the energy level between neutrinos and anti-neutrinos and can generate a lepton-asymmetry in the the radiation era if heavy Majorana neutrinos decouple at the GUT scale. This operator can also generate a lepton asymmetry during warm inflation if the light neutrinos have a Majorana mass m_ν\simeq 0.25 eV which is observable in double beta decay experiments.
