Branched projective structures on a Riemann surface and logarithmic connections

We study the set ${\mathcal P}_S$ consisting of all branched holomorphic projective structures on a compact Riemann surface $X$ of genus $g \geq 1$ and with a fixed branching divisor $S:= \sum_{i=1}^d n_i\cdot x_i$, where $x_i \in X$. Under the hypothesis that $n_i=1$, for all $i$, with $d$ a positive even integer such that $d \neq 2g-2$, we show that ${\mathcal P}_S$ coincides with a subset of the set of all logarithmic connections with singular locus $S$, satisfying certain geometric conditions, on the rank two holomorphic jet bundle $J^1(Q)$, where $Q$ is a fixed holomorphic line bundle on $X$ such that $Q^{\otimes 2}= TX\otimes {\mathcal O}_X(S)$. The space of all logarithmic connections of the above type is an affine space over the vector space $H^0(X, K^{\otimes 2}_X \otimes {\mathcal O}_X(S))$ of dimension $3g-3+d$. We conclude that ${\mathcal P}_S$ is a subset of this affine space that has codimenison $d$ at a generic point.

Limits of harmonic maps and crowned hyperbolic surfaces

We consider harmonic diffeomorphisms to a fixed hyperbolic target $Y$, from a family of domain Riemann surfaces degenerating along a Teichmüller ray. We use the work of Minsky to show that there is a limiting harmonic map from the conformal limit of the Teichmüller ray, to a crowned hyperbolic surface. The target surface is the metric completion of the complement of a geodesic lamination on $Y$. The conformal limit is obtained by attaching half-planes and cylinders to the critical graph of the holomorphic quadratic differential determining the ray. As an application, we provide a new proof of the existence of harmonic maps from any punctured Riemann surface to a given crowned hyperbolic target of the same topological type.

Harmonic maps and wild Teichmüller spaces

We use meromorphic quadratic differentials with higher order poles to parametrize the Teichmüller space of crowned hyperbolic surfaces. Such a surface is obtained on uniformizing a compact Riemann surface with marked points on its boundary components, and has non-compact ends with boundary cusps. This extends Wolf's parametrization of the Teichmüller space of a closed surface using holomorphic quadratic differentials. Our proof involves showing the existence of a harmonic map from a punctured Riemann surface to a crowned hyperbolic surface, with prescribed principal parts of its Hopf differential which determine the geometry of the map near the punctures.

Degree-regular triangulations of surfaces

A degree-regular triangulation is one in which each vertex has identical degree. Our main result is that any such triangulation of a (possibly non-compact) surface $S$ is geometric, that is, it is combinatorially equivalent to a geodesic triangulation with respect to a constant curvature metric on $S$, and we list the possibilities. A key ingredient of the proof is to show that any two $d$-regular triangulations of the plane for $d> 6 $ are combinatorially equivalent. The proof of this uniqueness result, which is of independent interest, is based on an inductive argument involving some combinatorial topology.

On domains biholomorphic to Teichmüller spaces

We prove that the Teichmüller space $\mathscr{T}$ of a closed surface of genus $g \ge 2$ cannot be biholomorphic to any domain which is locally strictly convex at some boundary point.

Meromorphic quadratic differentials and measured foliations on a Riemann surface

We describe the space of measured foliations induced on a compact Riemann surface by meromorphic quadratic differentials. We prove that any such foliation is realized by a unique such differential $q$ if we prescribe, in addition, the principal parts of $\sqrt q$ at the poles. This generalizes a theorem of Hubbard and Masur for holomorphic quadratic differentials. The proof analyzes infinite-energy harmonic maps from the Riemann surface to $\mathbb{R}$-trees of infinite co-diameter, with prescribed behavior at the poles.

Meromorphic quadratic differentials with complex residues and spiralling foliations

A meromorphic quadratic differential with poles of order two, on a compact Riemann surface, induces a measured foliation on the surface, with a spiralling structure at any pole that is determined by the complex residue of the differential at the pole. We introduce the space of such measured foliations, and prove that for a fixed Riemann surface, any such foliation is realized by a quadratic differential with second order poles at marked points. Furthermore, such a differential is uniquely determined if one prescribes complex residues at the poles that are compatible with the transverse measures around them. This generalizes a theorem of Hubbard and Masur concerning holomorphic quadratic differentials on closed surfaces, as well as a theorem of Strebel for the case when the foliation has only closed leaves. The proof involves taking a compact exhaustion of the surface, and considering a sequence of equivariant harmonic maps to real trees that do not have a uniform bound on total energy.

Quadratic differentials, half-plane structures, and harmonic maps to graphs

Let $(Σ,p)$ be a pointed Riemann surface of genus $g\geq 1$. For any integer $k\geq 1$, we parametrize the space of meromorphic quadratic differentials on $Σ$ with a pole of order $(k+2)$ at $p$, having a connected critical graph and an induced metric composed of $k$ Euclidean half-planes. The parameters form a finite-dimensional space $\mathcal{L} \cong \mathbb{R}^{k} \times S^1$ that describe a model singular-flat metric around the puncture with respect to a choice of coordinate chart. This generalizes an important theorem of Strebel, and associates, to each point in a decorated Teichmüller space $\mathcal{T}_{g,1} \times \mathcal{L}$, a unique metric spine of the surface that is a ribbon-graph with $k$ infinite-length edges to $p$. The proofs study and relate the singular-flat geometry on the surface and the infinite-energy harmonic map from $Σ\setminus p$ to a $k$-pronged graph, whose Hopf differential is that quadratic differential.

Holonomy map fibers of $\mathbb{C}{\rm P}^1$-structures in moduli space

Let $S$ be a closed oriented surface of genus $g\geq 2$. Fix an arbitrary non-elementary representation $ρ\colonπ_1(S)\to {\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ and consider all marked (complex) projective structures on $S$ with holonomy $ρ$. We show that their underlying conformal structures are dense in the moduli space of $S$.

On the asymptotic behavior of complex earthquakes and Teichmüller disks

Given a hyperbolic surface and a simple closed geodesic on it, complex-twists along the curve produce a holomorphic family of deformations in Teichmüller space, degenerating to the Riemann surface where it is pinched. We show there is a corresponding Teichmüller disk such that the two are strongly asymptotic, in the Teichmüller metric, around the noded Riemann surface. We establish a similar comparison with plumbing deformations that open the node.

Conformal limits of grafting and Teichmüller rays and their asymptoticity

We show that any grafting ray in Teichmüller space is (strongly) asymptotic to some Teichmüller geodesic ray. As an intermediate step we introduce surfaces that arise as limits of these degenerating Riemann surfaces. Given a grafting ray, the proof involves a Teichmüller ray with a conformally equivalent limit, and building quasiconformal maps of low dilatation between the surfaces along the rays. Our preceding work had proved the result for rays determined by an arational lamination or a multicurve, and the unified approach here gives an alternative proof of the former case.

Asymptoticity of grafting and Teichmüller rays I

We show that any grafting ray in Teichmüller space determined by an arational lamination or a multi-curve is (strongly) asymptotic to a Teichmüller geodesic ray. As a consequence the projection of a generic grafting ray to moduli space is dense. We also show that the set of points in Teichmüller space obtained by integer (2π-) graftings on any hyperbolic surface projects to a dense set, which implies that complex projective surfaces with any fixed Fuchsian holonomy are dense in moduli space.

Meromorphic quadratic differentials with half-plane structures

We prove the existence of "half-plane differentials" with prescribed local data on any Riemann surface. These are meromorphic quadratic differentials with higher-order poles which have an associated singular flat metric isometric to a collection of euclidean half-planes glued by an interval-exchange map on their boundaries. The local data is associated with the poles and consists of the integer order, a non-negative real residue, and a positive real leading order term. This generalizes a result of Strebel for differentials with double-order poles, and associates metric spines with the Riemann surface.

Curvatures on the Teichmüller curve

The Teichmüller curve is the fiber space over Teichmüller space of closed Riemann surfaces, where the fiber over a point in Teichmüller space is the underlying surface. We derive formulas for sectional curvatures on the Teichmüller curve. In particular, our method can be applied to investigate the geometry of the Weil-Petersson geodesic as a three-manifold, and the degeneration of the curvatures near the infinity of the augmented Teichmüller space along a Weil-Petersson geodesic, as well as the minimality of hyperbolic surfaces in this three-manifold.
