Systematic understanding of half-metallicity of ternary compounds in Heusler and Inverse Heusler structures with 3$d$ and 4$d$ elements

Employing {\it ab initio} electronic structure calculations we extensively study ternary Heusler compounds having the chemical formula X$_2$X$^\prime$Z, where X = Mn, Fe or Co; Z = Al or Si; and X$^\prime$ changes along the row of 4$d$ transition metals. A comprehensive overview of these compounds, addressing the trends in structural, electronic, magnetic properties and Curie temperature is presented here along with the search for new materials for spintronics applications. A simple picture of hybridization of the $d$ orbitals of the neighboring atoms is used to explain the origin of the half-metallic gap in these compounds. We show that arrangements of the magnetic atoms in different Heusler lattices are largely responsible for the interatomic exchange interactions that are correlated with the features in their electronic structures as well as possibility of half-metallicity. We find seven half-metallic magnets with 100\% spin polarization. We identify few other compounds with high spin polarisation as "near half-metals" which could be of potential use in applications as well. We find that the major features in the electronic structures remain intact if a 3$d$ X$^{\prime}$ constituent is replaced with an isoelectronic 4$d$, implying that the total number of valence electrons can be used as a predictor of half-metallic nature in compounds from Heusler family.

Site occupancy, composition and magnetic structure dependencies of martensitic transformation in Mn$_{2}$Ni$_{1+x}$Sn$_{1-x}$

A delicate balance between various factors such as site occupancy, composition and magnetic ordering seems to affect the stability of the martensitic phase in Mn$_{2}$Ni$_{1+x}$Sn$_{1-x}$. Using first-principles DFT calculations, we explore the impacts of each one of these factors on the martensitic stability of this system. Our results on total energies, magnetic moments and electronic structures upon changes in the composition, the magnetic configurations and the site occupancies show that the occupancies at the 4d sites in the Inverse Heusler crystal structure play the most crucial role. The presence of Mn at the 4d sites originally occupied by Sn and it's interaction with the Mn atoms at other sites decide the stability of the martensitic phases. This explains the discrepancy between the experiments and earlier DFT calculations regarding phase stability in Mn$_{2}$NiSn. Our results qualitatively explain the trends observed experimentally with regard to martensitic phase stability and the magnetisations in Ni-excess, Sn-deficient Mn$_{2}$NiSn system.

Interplay of phase sequence and electronic structure in the modulated martensites of Mn$_2$NiGa from first-principles

We investigate relative stability, structural properties and electronic structure of various modulated martensites of the magnetic shape memory alloy Mn$_{2}$NiGa by means of density functional theory. We observe that the instability in the high-temperature cubic structure first drives the system to a structure where modulation shuffles with a period of six atomic planes are taken into account. The driving mechanism for this instability is found to be the nesting of the minority band Fermi surface, in a similar way as established for the prototype system Ni$_{2}$MnGa. In agreement with experiments, we find 14M modulated structures with orthorhombic and monoclinic symmetries having energies lower than other modulated phases with same symmetry. In addition, we also find energetically favourable 10M modulated structures which have not been observed experimentally for this system yet. The relative stability of various martensites is explained in terms of changes in the electronic structures near the Fermi level, affected mostly by the hybridisation of Ni and Mn states. Our results indicate that the maximum achievable magnetic field-induced strain in Mn$_{2}$NiGa would be larger than in Ni$_{2}$MnGa. However, the energy costs for creating nanoscale adaptive twin boundaries are found to be one order of magnitude higher than that in Ni$_{2}$MnGa.

Effect of Fe and Co substitution on martensitic stability, elastic, electronic and magnetic properties of Mn$_2$NiGa: insights from \textit{ab initio} calculations

We investigate the effects of Fe and Co substitutions on the phase stability of the martensitic phase, mechanical, electronic and magnetic properties of magnetic shape memory system Mn$_{2}$NiGa by first-principles Density functional theory(DFT) calculations. The evolution of these aspects upon substitution of Fe and Co at different crystallographic sites are investigated by computing the electronic structure, mechanical properties and magnetic exchange parameters. We find that the martensitic phase of Mn$_{2}$NiGa gradually de-stabilises with increase in concentration of Fe/Co due to the weakening of the minority spin hybridisation of Ni and Mn atoms occupying crystallographically equivalent sites. The interplay between relative structural stability and the compositional changes are understood from the variations in the elastic modulii and electronic structures. We find that the elastic shear modulus C$^{\prime}$ can be considered as a predictor of composition dependence of martensitic transformation temperature in substituted Mn$_{2}$NiGa. The magnetic properties of Mn$_{2}$NiGa are found to be greatly improved by the substitutions due to stronger ferromagnetic interactions in the compounds. The gradually weaker(stronger) Jahn-Teller distortion (covalent bonding) in the minority spin densities of states due to substitutions lead to a half-metallic like gap in these compounds resulting in materials with high spin-polarisation when the substitutions are complete. The substitutions at the Ga site result in two new compounds Mn$_{2}$NiFe and Mn$_{2}$NiCo with very high magnetic moments and Curie temperatures. Thus, our work indicates that although the substitutions de-stabilise the martensitic phase in Mn$_{2}$NiGa, new magnetic materials with very good magnetic parameters and potentially useful for novel magnetic applications can be obtained.

First principles study of the structural phase stability and magnetic order in various structural phases of Mn$_2$FeGa

We investigate the structural and magnetic properties of Mn$_{2}$FeGa for different phases(cubic, hexagonal and tetragonal) reported experimentally using density functional theory. The relative structural stabilities, and the possible phase transformation mechanisms are discussed using results for total energy, electronic structure and elastic constants. We find that the phase transformation form hexagonal to ground state tetragonal structure would take place through a Heusler-like phase which has a pronounced electronic instability. The electronic structures, the elastic constants and the supplementary phonon dispersions indicate that the transition from the Heusler-like to the tetragonal phase is of pure Jahn-Teller origin. We also describe the ground state magentic structures in each phase by computations of the exchange interactions. For Heusler-like and tetragonal phases, the ferromagnetic exchange interactions associated with the Fe atoms balance the dominating antiferromagnetic interactions between the Mn atoms leading to collinear magnetic structures. In the hexagonal phase, the direction of atomic moment are completely in the planes with a collinear like structure, in stark contrast to the well known non-collinear magnetic structure in the hexagonal phase of Mn$_{3}$Ga, another material with similar structural properties. The overwhelmingly large exchange interactions of Fe with other magnetic atoms destroy the possibility of magnetic frustration in the hexagonal phase of Mn$_{2}$FeGa. This comprehensive study provides significant insights into the microscopic physics associated with the structural and magnetic orders in this compound.

Site occupancies and their effects on the physical properties of spinel $Co\left(Cr_{1-x}Fe_{x} \right)_{2}O_{4}$: an {\it ab initio} study

Recent experimental studies on Fe substituted spinel CoCr$_{2}$O$_{4}$ have discovered multiple functional properties in the system such as temperature and composition dependent magnetic compensation, tunable exchange bias and magnetostriction. These properties are attributed to the renormalisation of the inter-atomic magnetic exchange interactions arising due to the non-regular site occupancies of the magnetic cations in the system. In this work, we perform {\it ab initio} electronic structure calculations by DFT+U method and combine with a generalised thermodynamic model to compute the site occupancy patterns of the magnetic cations, the structural properties and the magnetic exchange interactions of Co$\left(Cr_{1-x}Fe_{x} \right)_{2}$O$_{4}$ for the entire composition range $0<x<1$. We find that the substituting Fe atoms prefer to occupy the tetrahedral sites of the spinel structure for the entire range of $x$, in agreement with the experimental inferences. Our results on the variations of the structural parameters with compositions agree very well with the experiments. By computing the variations of the various inter-atomic magnetic exchange interactions, we provide a microscopic picture of the evolution of a collinear structure from a non-collinear one due to substitution of Fe in CoCr$_{2}$O$_{4}$. The computed results are analysed in terms of the elements of the crystal field theory, and the features in the atoms and orbital-projected densities of states. The results and analysis presented in this work is the first comprehensive study on this system which would help understanding the complexities associated with the site occupancies, the electronic structures and the magnetic interactions in this multi-functional material.

Systematic analysis of structural and magnetic properties of spinel $CoB_2O_4$(B=Cr,Mn and Fe)compounds from their electronic structures

The structural and magnetic properties of spinel compounds $CoB_2O_4$ (B=Cr,Mn and Fe) are studied using the DFT+U method and generalized gradient approximation (GGA). We concentrate on understanding the trends in the properties of these materials as the B cation changes, in terms of relative strengths of crystal fields and exchange fields through an analysis of their electronic densities of states. We find that the electron-electron correlation plays a significant role in obtaining the correct structural and electronic ground states. Significant structural distortion in CoMn$_{2}$O$_{4}$ and "inverted" sublattice occupancy in CoFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$ affects the magnetic exchange interactions substantially. The trends in the magnetic exchange interactions are analysed in terms of the structural parameters and the features in their electronic structures. We find that the Fe states in CoFe$_{2}$O$_{4}$ are extremely localised, irrespective of the symmetry of the site, which makes it very different from the features of the states of the B cations in other two compounds. These results provide useful insights into the trends in the properties of CoB$_{2}$O$_{4}$ compounds with variation of B cation which would help in understanding the results of recent experiments on doping of Mn and Cr in multiferroic CoCr$_{2}$O$_{4}$.

First-principles investigations into the thermodynamics of cation disorder and it's impact on electronic structure and magnetic properties of spinel $Co\left(Cr_{1-x}Mn_{x} \right)_{2}O_{4}$

Recent experiments on Mn doped multiferroic $CoCr_{2}O_{4}$ indicate that a possible distribution of Mn atoms among tetrahedrally and octahedrally coordinated sites in the spinel lattice give rise to different variations in the structural parameters and saturation magnetisations in different concentration regimes of Mn atoms substituting the Cr. A composition dependent magnetic compensation behaviour points to the role conversions of the magnetic constituents. In this work, we have investigated the thermodynamics of cation disorder in $Co\left(Cr_{1-x}Mn_{x}\right)_{2}O_{4}$ system and it's consequences on the structural, electronic and magnetic properties, using results from first-principles electronic structure calculations. We have computed the variations in the cation-disorder as a function of Mn concentration and the temperature and found that at the annealing temperature of the experiment many of the systems exhibit cation disorder. Our results support the interpretations of the experimental results regarding the qualitative variations in the sub-lattice occupancies and the associated magnetisation behaviour, with composition. We have analysed the variations in structural, magnetic and electronic properties of this system with variations in the compositions and the degree of cation disorder from the variations in their electronic structures and by using the ideas from crystal field theory. Our study provides a complete microscopic picture of the effects that are responsible for composition dependent behavioural differences of the properties of this system. This work lays down a general framework, based upon results from first-principles calculations, to understand and analyse the substitutional magnetic spinel oxides $A\left(B_{1-x}C_{x} \right)_{2}O_{4}$ in presence of cation disorder.

Structural, electronic and magnetic properties of Fe doped CoCr$_{2}$O$_{4}$: insights from ab initio calculations

CoCr$_2$O$_4$ has attracted significant attention recently due to several interesting properties such as magnetostriction, magnetoelectricity etc.. More recent experiments on Fe substituted CoCr$_2$O$_4$ observed a variety of novel phenomena such as the magnetic compensation accompanied by the occurrence of exchange bias, which reverses its sign. Understanding of such phenomena may lead to control the properties of these material in an efficient way to enhance its potential for multifunctional applications. In this paper, we study the microscopic understanding of Fe doping in modifying the structural and magnetic properties of CoCr$_{2}$O$_{4}$ with varying composition and substitution of Fe at different sublattices by first-principles density functional calculations. We have analysed in detail the effect of Fe substitution on crystal field and exchange splittings, magnetic moments and interatomic exchange parameters. It is also observed that with increasing concentration of Fe impurity, the system has a tendency towards forming an "Inverse Spinel" structure as observed in experiments. Such tendencies are crucial to understand this system as it would lead to modifications in the magnetic exchange interactions associated with sites with different symmetry finally affecting the magnetic structure and the multiferrocity in turn.

Anti-site disorder and improved functionality of Mn$_{2}$Ni{\it X} ({\it X}= Al, Ga, In, Sn) inverse Heusler alloys

Recent first-principles calculations have predicted Mn$_{2}$Ni{\it X} ({\it X}=Al, Ga, In, Sn) alloys to be magnetic shape memory alloys. Moreover, experiments on Mn$_{2}$NiGa and Mn$_{2}$NiSn suggest that the alloys deviate from the perfect inverse Heusler arrangement and that there is chemical disorder at the sublattices with tetrahedral symmetry. In this work, we investigate the effects of such chemical disorder on phase stabilities and magnetic properties using first-principles electronic structure methods. We find that except Mn$_{2}$NiAl, all other alloys show signatures of martensitic transformations in presence of anti-site disorder at the sublattices with tetrahedral symmetry. This improves the possibilities of realizing martensitic transformations at relatively low fields and the possibilities of obtaining significantly large inverse magneto-caloric effects, in comparison to perfect inverse Heusler arrangement of atoms. We analyze the origin of such improvements in functional properties by investigating electronic structures and magnetic exchange interactions.

First-principles study of the lattice instabilities in Mn$_{2}$Ni{\it X} ({\it X}= Al, Ga, In, Sn) magnetic shape memory alloys

Using first-principles based Density Functional Theory (DFT), we have investigated the structural instabilities in the austenite phases of Mn$_{2}$Ni{\it X} ({\it X}= Al, Ga, In, Sn) magnetic shape memory alloys (MSMA). A complete softening is observed in the acoustic TA$_{2}$ branches for all the materials along [$ξξ$0] directions leading to the instability in the austenite structure which effectively stabilizes into martensitic structure. The reasons behind this softening are traced back to the repulsion from the optical T$_{2g}$ branches and to the nesting features in the Fermi surfaces. The vibrational density of states, the force constants and the elastic moduli are also computed and analyzed, which reconfirm the underlying mechanism behind the instabilities. The results indicate that the phonon anomalies are related to the occurrence of possible pre-martensitic phases which can be quite complex.

Interplay of force constants in the lattice dynamics of disordered alloys : An ab-initio study

A reliable prediction of interatomic force constants in disordered alloys is an outstanding problem. This is due to the need for a proper treatment of multisite (atleast pair) correlation within a random environment. The situation becomes even more challenging for systems with large difference in atomic size and mass. We propose a systematic density functional theory (DFT) based study to predict the ab-initio force constants in random alloys. The method is based on a marriage between special quasirandom structures (SQS) and the augmented space recursion (ASR) to calculate phonon spectra, density of states (DOS) etc. bcc TaW and fcc NiPt alloys are considered as the two distinct test cases. Ta-Ta (W-W) bond distance in the alloy is predicted to be smaller (larger) than those in pure Ta (W), which, in turn, yields stiffer (softer) force constants for Ta (W). Pt-Pt force constants in the alloy, however, are predicted to be softer compared to Ni-Ni, due to a large bond distance of the former. Our calculated force constants, phonon spectra and DOS are compared with experiments and other theoretical results, wherever available. Correct trend of present results for the two alloys pave a path for further future studies in more complex alloy systems.

A new first principles approach to calculate phonon spectra of disordered alloys

The lattice dynamics in substitutional disordered alloys with constituents having large size differences is driven by strong disorder in masses, inter-atomic force constants and local environments. In this letter, a new first-principles approach based on special quasi random structures and itinerant coherent potential approximation to compute the phonon spectra of such alloys is proposed and applied to Ni$_{0.5}$Pt$_{0.5}$ alloy. The agreement between our results with the experiments is found to be much better than for previous models of disorder due to an accurate treatment of the interplay of inter-atomic forces among various pairs of chemical species. This new formalism serves as a potential solution to the longstanding problem of a proper microscopic understanding of lattice dynamical behavior of disordered alloys.

A first principles study of magnetism in Pd$_{3}$Fe under pressure

Recent experiments on Pd$_{3}$Fe intermetallics [Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 237202 (2009)] have revealed that the system behaves like a classical invar alloy under high pressure. The experimental pressure-volume relation suggests an anomalous volume collapse and a substantial increase in bulk modulus around the pressure where invar behavior is observed. With the help of first-principles density functional theory based calculations, we have explored various magnetic phases (ferromagnetic, fully and partially disordered local moment, spin spiral) in order to understand the effect of pressure on magnetism. Our calculations reveal that the system does not undergo a transition from a ferromagnetic to a spin-disordered state as was thought to be the possible mechanism to explain the invar behavior of this system. We rather suggest that the anomaly in the system could possibly be due to the transition from a collinear state to non-collinear magnetic states upon the application of pressure.

Electronic, magnetic and optical properties of random Fe-Cr alloys

In this communication we have studied the electronic structure, magnetic and optical properties of bcc \fecr alloys in the ferromagnetic phase. We have used the augmented space recursion technique coupled with tight-binding linearized muffin-tin orbital technique (TB-LMTO-ASR) as well as the coherent-potential approximation based on the Korringa-Kohn-Rostocker method (KKR-CPA). Also the plane wave projector augmented wave (PAW) method has been used with the disorder simulated by the special quasi-random structure method f or configuration averaging (SQS). This was to provide a comparison between the different methods in common use for random alloys. Moreover, using the self-consistent potential parameters from TB-LMTO-ASR ca lculations we obtained the spin resolved optical conductivity using the generalized recursion technique proposed by Müller and Vishwanathan.

An augmented space approach to the study of phonons in disordered alloys : comparison between the itinerant coherent-potential approximation and the augmented space recursion

A first principles density functional based linear response theory (the so called Density Functional Perturbation theory \cite{dfpt}) has been combined separately with two recently developed formalism for a systematic study of the lattice dynamics in disordered binary alloys. The two formalisms are the Augmented space recursion (ASR) and the Itinerant coherent potential approximation (ICPA). The two different theories (DFPT-ASR and DFPT-ICPA) systematically provides a hierarchy of improvements upon the earlier single site based theories (like CPA etc.) and includes non-local correlations in the disorder configurations. The formalisms explicitly take into account fluctuations in masses, force constants and scattering lengths. The combination of DFPT with these formulation helps in understanding the actual interplay of force constants in alloys. We illustrate the methods by applying to a fcc Fe$_{50}$Pd$_{50}$ alloy.

Towards a first principles description of phonons in Ni$_{50}$Pt$_{50}$ disordered alloys: the role of relaxation

Using a combination of density-functional perturbation theory and the itinerant coherent potential approximation, we study the effects of atomic relaxation on the inelastic incoherent neutron scattering cross sections of disordered Ni$_{50}$Pt$_{50}$ alloys. We build on previous work, where empirical force constants were adjusted {\it ad hoc} to agree with experiment. After first relaxing all structural parameters within the local-density approximation for ordered NiPt compounds, density-functional perturbation theory is then used to compute phonon spectra, densities of states, and the force constants. The resulting nearest-neighbor force constants are first compared to those of other ordered structures of different stoichiometry, and then used to generate the inelastic scattering cross sections within the itinerant coherent potential approximation. We find that structural relaxation substantially affects the computed force constants and resulting inelastic cross sections, and that the effect is much more pronounced in random alloys than in ordered alloys.

Phonons in random alloys: the itinerant coherent-potential approximation

We present the itinerant coherent-potential approximation(ICPA), an analytic, translationally invariant and tractable form of augmented-space-based, multiple-scattering theory in a single-site approximation for harmonic phonons in realistic random binary alloys with mass and force-constant disorder. We provide expressions for quantities needed for comparison with experimental structure factors such as partial and average spectral functions and derive the sum rules associated with them. Numerical results are presented for Ni_{55} Pd_{45} and Ni_{50} Pt_{50} alloys which serve as test cases, the former for weak force-constant disorder and the latter for strong. We present results on dispersion curves and disorder-induced widths. Direct comparisons with the single-site coherent potential approximation(CPA) and experiment are made which provide insight into the physics of force-constant changes in random alloys. The CPA accounts well for the weak force-constant disorder case but fails for strong force-constant disorder where the ICPA succeeds.
