Late Forming Dark Matter in Theories of Neutrino Dark Energy

We study the possibility of Late Forming Dark Matter (LFDM), where a scalar field, previously trapped in a metastable state by thermal or finite density effects, begins to oscillate near the era matter-radiation equality about its true minimum. Such a theory is motivated generally if the dark energy is of a similar form, but has not yet made the transition to dark matter, and, in particular, arises automatically in recently considered theories of neutrino dark energy. If such a field comprises the present dark matter, the matter power spectrum typically shows a sharp break at small, presently nonlinear scales, below which power is highly suppressed and previously contained acoustic oscillations. If, instead, such a field forms a subdominant component of the total dark matter, such acoustic oscillations may imprint themselves in the linear regime.

Super-acceleration as Signature of Dark Sector Interaction

We show that an interaction between dark matter and dark energy generically results in an effective dark energy equation of state of w<-1. This arises because the interaction alters the redshift-dependence of the matter density. An observer who fits the data treating the dark matter as non-interacting will infer an effective dark energy fluid with w<-1. We argue that the model is consistent with all current observations, the tightest constraint coming from estimates of the matter density at different redshifts. Comparing the luminosity and angular-diameter distance relations with LambdaCDM and phantom models, we find that the three models are degenerate within current uncertainties but likely distinguishable by the next generation of dark energy experiments.

Neutrino Propagation in a Weakly Magnetized Medium

Neutrino-photon processes, forbidden in vacuum, can take place in the presence of a thermal medium and/or an external electro-magnetic field, mediated by the corresponding charged leptons (real or virtual). Such interactions affect the propagation of neutrinos through a magnetized plasma. We investigate the neutrino-photon absorptive processes, at the one-loop level, for massless neutrinos in a weakly magnetized plasma. We find that there is no correction to the absorptive part of the axial-vector--vector amplitude due to the presence of a magnetic field to the linear order in the field strength.

Photoemission From A Two Electron Quantum Dot

We consider photoemission from a two-electron quantum dot and find analytic expression for the cross-section. We show that the emission cross-section from the ground state as a function of magnetic field has sharp discontinuities corresponding to the singlet-triplet transitions for low magnetic fields and the transitions between magic numbers (2J+1) for high magnetic field. We also find the corrections to the photoemission cross-section from a more realistic quantum dot having a finite thickness due to nonvanishing extent of electron wave function in the direction perpendicular to the plane in which 2-D dot electrons are usually confined.

Two Electron Quantum Dot - A Variational Treatment For The Ground State

A variational treatment for a two-electron quantum dot (the artificial helium atom) is proposed which leads to exact answer for the ground state energy. Depending on the magnetic field value the singlet-triplet and triplet-triplet transitions of the ground state take place, which are captured in our solution. Using the same variational technique we find corrections to wave function and energy and the transition field strengths in a realistic dot where electron wave function has a finite extent in the direction perpendicular to the x-y plane in which usually 2-D dot electrons are confined. Using the variational wave function we show that photoemission cross-section as a function of magnetic field has sharp discontinuities, which can be used for experimental verification of the singlet-triplet transitions.
