Phi meson production in relativistic heavy ion collisions

Within a multiphase transport model we study phi meson production in relativistic heavy ion collisions from both superposition of initial multiple proton-proton interactions and the secondary collisions in the produced hadronic matter. The yield of phi mesons is then reconstructed from their decaying product of either the kaon-antikaon pairs or the dimuon pairs. Since the kaon-antikaon pairs at midrapidity with low transverse momenta are predominantly rescattered or absorbed in the hadronic medium, they can not be used to reconstruct the phi meson and lead thus to a smaller reconstructed phi meson yield than that reconstructed from the dimuon channel. With in-medium mass modifications of kaons and phi mesons, the phi yield from dimuons is further enhanced compared to that from the kaon-antikaon pairs. The model result is compared with the experimental data at the CERN/SPS and RHIC energies and its implications to quark-gluon plasma formation are discussed.

J/psi production in relativistic heavy ion collisions from a multi-phase transport model

Using A Multi-Phase Transport (AMPT) model, we study J/psi production from interactions between charm and anti-charm quarks in initial parton phase and between D and Dbar mesons in final hadron phase of relativistic heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Including also the inverse reactions of J/psi absorption by gluons and light mesons, we find that the net number of J/psi from the parton and hadron phases is smaller than that expected from the superposition of initial nucleon-nucleon collisions, contrary to the J/psi enhancement predicted by the kinetic formation model. The production of J/psi is further suppressed if one includes the color screening effect in the parton phase. We have also studied the dependence of J/psi production on the charm quark mass and the effective charm meson mass.

Diomega production in relativistic heavy ion collisions

Using a multiphase transport model, we study the production of a new strange dibaryon (ΩΩ)_{0+} in dense hadronic matter formed in relativistic heavy ion collisions. The (multi-)strange baryons (Ξand Ω) are produced by strangeness-exchange reactions between antikaons and hyperons in the pure hadronic phase. The rescattering between the omegas at midrapidity leads to a production probability of \simeq 3x10^{-7} (ΩΩ)_{0+} per event at the RHIC energy of \sqrt s=130A GeV. The production probability would be enhanced by two orders of magnitude if (ΩΩ)_{0+} and omega reach chemical equilibrium during heavy ion collisions. We further find that the yield of (ΩΩ)_{0+} increases continuously from SPS to the highest RHIC energy.

Multistrange baryon production in relativistic heavy ion collisions

Using a multiphase transport model, we study the production of multistrange baryons from the hadronic matter formed in relativistic heavy ion collisions. The mechanism we introduce is the strangeness-exchange reactions between antikaons and hyperons. We find that these reactions contribute significantly to the production of multistrange baryons in heavy ion collisions at SPS energies, which has been found to be appreciably enhanced. We have also made predictions for multistrange baryon production in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and found a similar enhancement.

Multiphase transport model for heavy ion collisions at RHIC

Using a multiphase transport model (AMPT) with both partonic and hadronic interactions, we study the multiplicity and transverse momentum distributions of charged particles such as pions, kaons and protons in central Au+Au collisions at RHIC energies. Effects due to nuclear shadowing and jet quenching on these observables are also studied. We further show preliminary results on the production of multistrange baryons from the strangeness-exchange reactions during the hadronic stage of heavy ion collisions.

Strangeness equilibration in heavy ion collisions

Using a relativistic transport model for heavy ion collisions at energies that are below the threshold for kaon and antikaon production in nucleon-nucleon collisions, we study how their abundances approach the canonical equilibrium during the collisions. We find that kaons are far from chemical equilibrium at the initial and high density stage, and they approach equilibrium only during the expansion stage of the collisions when their production rate is small and becomes comparable to their annihilation rate. In contrast, antikaons approach chemical equilibrium much earlier but eventually fall out of equilibrium again as a result of their large annihilation cross sections in nuclear matter.

Charged particle rapidity distributions at RHIC

Using a multiphase transport model (AMPT), which includes both initial partonic and final hadronic interactions, we study the rapidity distributions of charged particles such as protons, antiprotons, pions, and kaons in heavy ion collisions at RHIC. The theoretical results for the total charged particle multiplicity at midrapidity are consistent with those measured by the PHOBOS collaboration in central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt s$ = 56 and 130 AGeV. We find that these hadronic observables are much more sensitive to the hadronic interactions than the partonic interactions.

Antiflow of kaons in relativistic heavy ion collisions

We compare relativistic transport model calculations to recent data on the sideward flow of neutral strange K^0_s mesons for Au+Au collisions at 6 AGeV. A soft nuclear equation of state is found to describe very well the positive proton flow data measured in the same experiment. In the absence of kaon potential, the K^0 flow pattern is similar to that of protons. The kaon flow becomes negative if a repulsive kaon potential determined from the impulse approximation is introduced. However, this potential underestimates the data which exhibits larger antiflow. An excellent agreement with the data is obtained when a relativistic scalar-vector kaon potential, that has stronger density dependence, is used. We further find that the transverse momentum dependence of directed and elliptic flow is quite sensitive to the kaon potential in dense matter.

Antikaon condensation in neutron stars

We investigate the condensation of charged $K^-$ meson and neutral $\bar K^0$ meson in dense neutron star matter. Calculations are performed in relativistic mean field models in which both the baryon-baryon and (anti)kaon-baryon interactions are mediated by meson exchange. It is found that $\bar K^0$ condensation is quite sensitive to the antikaon optical potential and depends more strongly on the nucleonic equation of state. For moderate values of antikaon potential and a rather stiff equation of state, a significant region of maximum mass star will contain $\bar K^0$ meson. The critical density of $\bar K^0$ condensation is always higher than that of $K^-$ condensation. With the appearance of $K^-$ and $\bar K^0$ condensates, pairs of $p-K^-$ and $n-\bar K^0$ are produced with equal proportion leading to a perfectly symmetric matter of nucleons and antikaons in neutron stars. Along with $K^-$ condensate, $\bar K^0$ condensate makes the equation of state much softer resulting in smaller maximum mass stars compared to the case without any condensate.

Meson mass modification in strange hadronic matter

We investigate in stable strange hadronic matter (SHM) the modification of the masses of the scalar ($σ$, $σ^*$) and the vector ($ω$, $ϕ$) mesons. The baryon ground state is treated in the relativistic Hartree approximation in the nonlinear $σ$-$ω$ and linear $σ^*$-$ϕ$ model. In stable SHM, the masses of all the mesons reveal considerable reduction due to large vacuum polarization contribution from the hyperons and small density dependent effects caused by larger binding.

Strong magnetic field in a protoneutron star

We investigate the influence of a strong interior magnetic field on the structure and composition of a protoneutron star allowing quark-hadron phase transition. In contrast to protoneutron stars with noninteracting quark phase, the stars with interacting quark phase have smaller maximum star masses than those of neutrino-free stars. The strong field makes the overall equation of state softer compared to the field-free case favoring the evolution of a protoneutron star more towards a neutron star than a black hole.

Rapid cooling of magnetized neutron stars

The neutrino emissivities resulting from direct URCA processes in neutron stars are calculated in a relativistic Dirac-Hartree approach in presence of a magnetic field. In a quark or a hyperon matter environment, the emissivity due to nucleon direct URCA processes is suppressed relative to that from pure nuclear matter. In all the cases studied, the magnetic field enhances emissivity compared to the field-free cases.

Quantizing magnetic field and quark-hadron phase transition in a neutron star

We investigate the influence of a strong magnetic field on various properties of neutron stars with quark-hadron phase transition. The one-gluon exchange contribution in a magnetic field is calculated in a relativistic Dirac-Hartree-Fock approach. In a magnetic field of $5\times 10^{18}$G in the center of the star, the overall equation of state is softer in comparison to the field-free case resulting in the reduction of maximum mass of the neutron star.

Dense nuclear matter in a strong magnetic field

We investigate in a relativistic Hartree theory the gross properties of cold symmetric nuclear matter and nuclear matter in beta equilibrium under the influence of strong magnetic fields. If the field strengths are above the critical values for electrons and protons, the respective phase spaces are strongly modified. This results in additional binding of the systems with distinctively softer equations of state compared to the field free cases. For magnetic field $\sim 10^{20}$ Gauss and beyond, the nuclear matter in beta equilibrium practically converts into a stable proton rich matter.
