Carroll fermions from null reduction: A case of good and bad fermions

We derive Carrollian fermionic actions using the null reduction method from Bargmann spacetimes. In the Lorentzian light-cone formulation, the Dirac spinor naturally decomposes into dynamical and constrained degrees of freedom $-$ the so-called `good' and `bad' fermions $Ψ_{(\pm)}$. These light-cone projections are intrinsically adapted to the null frame and, unlike the chiral decomposition into left- and right-handed spinors $Ψ_{L(R)}$, are valid in arbitrary spacetime dimensions, both even and odd. As in the case of bosons, the magnetic Carroll sector for fermions is governed by the dynamical modes of the parent theory, while the electric sector arises from the constrained modes. Upon deforming to a Bargmann spacetime, these constraints are removed, promoting the `bad' fermions to dynamical modes that describe the electric Carroll fermions. We construct the Clifford algebra on the Carroll manifold through its embedding in the ambient Bargmann manifold, and obtain both electric and magnetic Carroll fermion actions from a \textit{single} Bargmann-invariant Dirac action. We analyze the canonical structure of both theories, establish their invariance under Carroll transformations, and compute the corresponding two-point functions, which exhibit the expected behavior in both sectors. We conclude with some comments on the quantization of these Carrollian theories.

Carroll theories from Lorentzian light-cone theories

We derive Carrollian field theories via null reduction from Lorentzian light-cone actions in Minkowski spacetime. By suitably deforming the light-cone action, we reduce the Poincaré invariance to a Bargmann subgroup, from which both magnetic and electric Carroll actions can be obtained in one lower dimension. Through a canonical analysis, we show that the second-class constraints usually found in Lorentzian light-cone theories are absent for these deformed Bargmann-invariant actions. We demonstrate the procedure for theories with and without gauge symmetry. Notably, while the magnetic Carroll sector can be directly derived from the original Lorentzian action, the deformation is essential to obtain the electric Carroll sector. We further argue that magnetic Carroll solutions in $d$ dimensions represent a consistent truncation of the solutions of the $(d+1)$-dimensional Lorentzian parent theory, providing an effective description of light-cone dynamics near a null hypersurface. For gauge theories, we also highlight the role of the light-cone gauge condition in deriving Carrollian theories.

On the Carrollian Nature of the Light Front

Motivated by recent advances in non-Lorentzian physics, we revisit the light-cone formulation of quantum field theories. We discuss some interesting subalgebras within the light-cone Poincaré algebra, with a key emphasis on the Carroll, Bargmann, and Galilean kinds. We show that theories on the light front possess a Hamiltonian of the magnetic Carroll type, thereby proposing a straightforward method for deriving magnetic Carroll Hamiltonian actions from Lorentzian field theories.

Lessons from discrete light-cone quantization for physics at null infinity: Bosons in two dimensions

Motivated by issues in the context of asymptotically flat spacetimes at null infinity, we discuss in the simplest example of a massless scalar field in two dimensions several subtleties that arise when setting up the canonical formulation on a single or on two intersecting null hyperplanes with a special emphasis on the infinite-dimensional global and conformal symmetries and their canonical generators, the free data, a consistent treatment of zero modes, matching conditions, and implications for quantization of massless versus massive fields.

Radiative Asymptotic Symmetries of 3D Einstein-Maxwell Theory

We study the null asymptotic structure of Einstein-Maxwell theory in three-dimensional (3D) spacetimes. Although devoid of bulk gravitational degrees of freedom, the system admits a massless photon and can therefore accommodate electromagnetic radiation. We derive fall-off conditions for the Maxwell field that contain both Coulombic and radiative modes with non-vanishing news. The latter produces non-integrability and fluxes in the asymptotic surface charges, and gives rise to a non-trivial 3D Bondi mass loss formula. The resulting solution space is thus analogous to a dimensional reduction of 4D pure gravity, with the role of gravitational radiation played by its electromagnetic cousin. We use this simplified setup to investigate choices of charge brackets in detail, and compute in particular the recently introduced Koszul bracket. When the latter is applied to Wald-Zoupas charges, which are conserved in the absence of news, it leads to the field-dependent central extension found earlier in [arXiv:1503.00856]. We also consider (Anti-)de Sitter asymptotics to further exhibit the analogy between this model and 4D gravity with leaky boundary conditions.

BMS symmetry in gravity: Front form versus Instant form

In General Relativity, the allowed set of diffeomorphisms or gauge transformations at asymptotic infinity forms the BMS group, an infinite-dimensional extension of the Poincaré group. We focus on the structure of the BMS group in two distinct forms of Hamiltonian dynamics - the instant and front forms. Both similarities and differences in these two forms are examined while emphasising the role of non-covariant approaches to symmetries in gravity.

Residual gauge symmetry in light-cone electromagnetism

We analyze the residual gauge freedom in light-cone electromagnetism in four dimensions. The standard boundary conditions involved in the so-called $lc_2$ formalism, which contains only the two physical degrees of freedom, allow for a subset of residual gauge transformations. We relax the boundary conditions imposed on the fields in order to obtain all the residual gauge transformations. We compute the canonical generators for Poincaré and gauge transformations with these relaxed boundary conditions. This enables us to distinguish between the trivial (proper) and large (improper) gauge transformations in light-cone electromagnetism. We then employ the Newman-Penrose formalism to identify the incoming and outgoing radiation fields. We comment on the quadratic form structure of light-cone Hamiltonians, often encountered in $lc_2$ gauge theories.

BMS algebra from residual gauge invariance in light-cone gravity

We analyze the residual gauge freedom in gravity, in four dimensions, in the light-cone gauge, in a formulation where unphysical fields are integrated out. By checking the invariance of the light-cone Hamiltonian, we obtain a set of residual gauge transformations, which satisfy the BMS algebra realized on the two physical fields in the theory. Hence, the BMS algebra appears as a consequence of residual gauge invariance in the bulk and not just at the asymptotic boundary. We highlight the key features of the light-cone BMS algebra and discuss its connection with the quadratic form structure of the Hamiltonian.

Local supersymmetry and the square roots of Bondi-Metzner-Sachs supertranslations

Super-BMS$_4$ algebras -- also called BMS$_4$ superalgebras -- are graded extensions of the BMS$_4$ algebra. They can be of two different types: they can contain either a finite number or an infinite number of fermionic generators. We show in this letter that, with suitable boundary conditions on the graviton and gravitino fields at spatial infinity, supergravity on asymptotically flat spaces possesses as superalgebra of asymptotic symmetries a (nonlinear) super-BMS$_4$ algebra containing an infinite number of fermionic generators, which we denote SBMS$_4$. These boundary conditions are not only invariant under SBMS$_4$, but also lead to a fully consistent canonical description of the supersymmetries, which have in particular well-defined Hamiltonian generators that close according to the nonlinear SBMS$_4$ algebra. One finds in particular that the graded brackets between the fermionic generators yield all the BMS$_4$ supertranslations, of which they provide therefore "square roots".

BMS algebra as an extension of the Poincaré symmetry in light-cone gravity

We analyze possible local extensions of the Poincaré symmetry in light-cone gravity in four dimensions. We use a formalism where we represent the algebra on the two physical degrees of freedom, one with helicity $2$ and the other with helicity $-2$. The representation is non-linearly realized and one of the light-cone momenta is the Hamiltonian, which is hence a non-linear generator of the algebra. We find that this can be locally realized and the Poincaré algebra extended to the BMS symmetry without any reference to asymptotic limits.

Asymptotic structure of the Rarita-Schwinger theory in four spacetime dimensions at spatial infinity

We investigate the asymptotic structure of the free Rarita-Schwinger theory in four spacetime dimensions at spatial infinity in the Hamiltonian formalism. We impose boundary conditions for the spin-3/2 field that are invariant under an infinite-dimensional (abelian) algebra of non-trivial asymptotic fermionic symmetries. The compatibility of this set of boundary conditions with the invariance of the theory under Lorentz boosts requires the introduction of boundary degrees of freedom in the Hamiltonian action, along the lines of electromagnetism. These boundary degrees of freedom modify the symplectic structure by a surface contribution appearing in addition to the standard bulk piece. The Poincaré transformations have then well-defined (integrable, finite) canonical generators. Moreover, improper fermionic gauge symmetries, which are also well-defined canonical transformations, are further enlarged and turn out to be parametrized by two independent angle-dependent spinor functions at infinity, which lead to an infinite-dimensional fermionic algebra endowed with a central charge. We extend next the analysis to the supersymmetric spin-$(1,3/2)$ and spin-$(2,3/2)$ multiplets. First, we present the canonical realization of the super-Poincaré algebra on the spin-$(1,3/2)$ multiplet, which is shown to be consistently enhanced by the infinite-dimensional abelian algebra of angle-dependent bosonic and fermionic improper gauge symmetries associated with the electromagnetic and the Rarita-Schwinger fields, respectively. A similar analysis of the spin-$(2,3/2)$ multiplet is then carried out to obtain the canonical realization of the super-Poincaré algebra, consistently enhanced by the abelian improper bosonic gauge transformations of the spin-$2$ field (BMS supertranslations) and the abelian improper fermionic gauge transformations of the spin-$3/2$ field.

Asymptotic structure of the Pauli-Fierz theory in four spacetime dimensions

The asymptotic structure of the Pauli-Fierz theory at spatial infinity is investigated in four spacetime dimensions. Boundary conditions on the massless spin-$2$ field that are invariant under an infinite-dimensional group of non-trivial ``improper'' gauge symmetries are given. The compatibility of these boundary conditions with invariance of the theory under Lorentz boosts is a subtle issue which is investigated in depth and leads to the identification of the improper gauge symmetries with the pure BMS supertranslations. It is also shown how rigid Poincaré transformations and improper gauge symmetries of the free Pauli-Fierz theory merge into the full BMS group as one switches on the gravitational coupling. Contrary to the massless spin-$1$ case, where invariance under boosts is implemented differently and where important differences between the free and the interacting cases have been exhibited recently, the free Pauli-Fierz theory and general relativity show very similar behaviours at spatial infinity.

Dual Superconformal Symmetry of ${\cal N}=2$ Chern-Simons theory with Fundamental Matter at Large $N$

Dual conformal symmetry and Yangian symmetry are symmetries of amplitudes that have aided the study of scattering amplitudes in highly supersymmetric theories like ${\cal N}=4$ SYM and ABJM. However, in general such symmetries are absent from the theories with lesser or no supersymmetry. In this paper, we show that the tree level $2\to 2$ scattering amplitude in the 3d ${\cal N}=2$ Chern-Simons theory coupled to a fundamental chiral multiplet is dual superconformal invariant. In the 't Hooft large $N$ limit, the $2\to 2$ scattering amplitude in this theory has been shown to be tree-level exact in non-anyonic channels, while having only an overall multiplicative coupling dependent renormalisation in the anyonic channel. Therefore, the dual superconformal symmetry that we demonstrate in this paper is all loop exact. This is unlike the previously studied highly supersymmetric theories where dual superconformal symmetry is anomalous at loop levels. Furthermore, we reverse the argument to study the extent to which dual superconformal invariance fixes the scattering amplitude in an ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric theory. We demonstrate that requiring the dual superconformal invariance completely fixes the momentum dependence of the $2\to2$ amplitude, while the coupling constant dependence remain unfixed. Further, we use a combination of parity invariance, unitarity and self-duality of the amplitude to constrain the coupling dependence of scattering amplitude.

Ehlers symmetry in four dimensions

Starting with the light-cone Hamiltonian for gravity, we perform a field redefinition that reveals a hidden symmetry in four dimensions, namely the Ehlers $SL(2,R)$ symmetry. The field redefinition, which is non-local in space but local in time, acts as a canonical transformation in the Hamiltonian formulation keeping the Poisson bracket relations unaltered. We discuss the electro-magnetic duality symmetry of gravity in the light-cone formalism, which forms the $SO(2)$ subgroup of the Ehlers symmetry. The helicity states in the original Hamiltonian are not in a representation of the enhanced symmetry group. In order to make the symmetry manifest, we make a change of variables in the path integral from the helicity states to new fields that transform linearly under the $SO(2)$ duality symmetry.

A hidden symmetry in quantum gravity

The action integral contains more information than the equations of motion. We have previously shown that there are signs of an extended exceptional symmetry for N=8 supergravity in four dimensions. The symmetry is such that the fields used in the Lagrangian are not representations of the symmetry. Instead one has to add representations to obtain a representation of the extended symmetry group. In this paper we discuss an extended symmetry in four-dimensional gravity which is the Ehlers symmetry in three dimensions. It cannot be spanned by the helicity states of four-dimensional gravity but it can be realised once we treat the helicity states just as field variables of the functional integral, which can be changed like variables in any integral. We also explain how this symmetry is inherent to formulations of N=8 supergravity in four dimensions through a truncation in the field space to pure gravity.

Maximal supergravity and the quest for finiteness

We show that N = 8 supergravity may possess an even larger symmetry than previously believed. Such an enhanced symmetry is needed to explain why this theory of gravity exhibits ultraviolet behaviour reminiscent of the finite N = 4 Yang-Mills theory. We describe a series of three steps that leads us to this result.

E$_8$ in $\mathcal N=8$ supergravity in four dimensions

We argue that $\mathcal N=8$ supergravity in four dimensions exhibits an exceptional $E_{8(8)}$ symmetry, enhanced from the known $E_{7(7)}$ invariance. Our procedure to demonstrate this involves dimensional reduction of the $\mathcal N=8$ theory to $d=3$, a field redefinition to render the $E_{8(8)}$ invariance manifest, followed by dimensional oxidation back to $d=4$.

Deriving spin-1 quartic interaction vertices from closure of the Poincaré algebra

We derive the quartic interaction vertex of pure Yang-Mills theory by demanding closure of the light-cone Poincaré algebra in four-dimensional Minkowski spacetime. This calculation explicitly shows why structure constants must satisfy the Jacobi identity. We then prove that corrections to the spin generator, for spin one at this order, vanish. We comment briefly on higher spin fields in this context.
