Electrical transport signatures of metallic surface state formation in the strongly-correlated insulator FeSb2

We present local and nonlocal electrical transport measurements of the correlated insulator FeSb$_2$. By employing wiring configurations that delineate between bulk- and surface-dominated conduction, we reveal the formation of a metallic surface state in FeSb$_2$ for temperatures $\lessapprox 5$~K. This result is corroborated by an angular rotation study of this material's magnetotransport, which also shows signatures of the transition from bulk- to surface-dominated conduction over the same temperature interval as the local/nonlocal transport divergence. Notable similarities with the topological Kondo insulator candidate SmB$_6$ are discussed.

A multi-component Fermi surface in the vortex state of an underdoped high-Tc superconductor

In order to understand the origin of superconductivity, it is crucial to ascertain the nature and origin of the primary carriers available to participate in pairing. Recent quantum oscillation experiments on high Tc cuprate superconductors have revealed the existence of a Fermi surface akin to normal metals, comprising fermionic carriers that undergo orbital quantization. However, the unexpectedly small size of the observed carrier pocket leaves open a variety of possibilities as to the existence or form of any underlying magnetic order, and its relation to d-wave superconductivity. Here we present quantum oscillations in the magnetisation (the de Haas-van Alphen or dHvA effect) observed in superconducting YBa2Cu3O6.51 that reveal more than one carrier pocket. In particular, we find evidence for the existence of a much larger pocket of heavier mass carriers playing a thermodynamically dominant role in this hole-doped superconductor. Importantly, characteristics of the multiple pockets within this more complete Fermi surface impose constraints on the wavevector of any underlying order and the location of the carriers in momentum space. These constraints enable us to construct a possible density-wave scenario with spiral or related modulated magnetic order, consistent with experimental observations.

$f$-electron hybridised metallic Fermi surface in magnetic field-induced metallic YbB$_{12}$

The nature of the Fermi surface observed in the recently discovered family of unconventional insulators starting with SmB$_6$ and subsequently YbB$_{12}$ is a subject of intense inquiry. Here we shed light on this question by comparing quantum oscillations between the high magnetic field-induced metallic regime in YbB$_{12}$ and the unconventional insulating regime. In the field-induced metallic regime beyond 47 T, we find prominent quantum oscillations in the contactless resistivity characterised by multiple frequencies up to at least 3000 T and heavy effective masses up to at least 17 $m_\text{e}$, characteristic of an $f$-electron hybridised metallic Fermi surface. The growth of quantum oscillation amplitude at low temperatures in electrical transport and magnetic torque in insulating YbB$_{12}$ is closely similar to the Lifshitz-Kosevich low temperature growth of quantum oscillation amplitude in field-induced metallic YbB$_{12}$, pointing to an origin of quantum oscillations in insulating YbB$_{12}$ from in-gap neutral low energy excitations. The field-induced metallic regime of YbB$_{12}$ is characterised by more Fermi surface sheets of heavy quasiparticle effective mass that emerge in addition to the heavy Fermi surface sheets yielding multiple quantum oscillation frequencies below 1000 T observed in both insulating and metallic regimes. We thus observe a heavy multi-component Fermi surface in which $f$-electron hybridisation persists from the unconventional insulating to the field-induced metallic regime of YbB$_{12}$, which is in distinct contrast to the unhybridised conduction electron Fermi surface observed in the case of the unconventional insulator SmB$_6$. Our findings require a different theoretical model of neutral in-gap low energy excitations in which the $f$-electron hybridisation is retained in the case of the unconventional insulator YbB$_{12}$.

Unconventional quantum vortex matter state hosts quantum oscillations in the underdoped high-temperature cuprate superconductors

A central question in the underdoped cuprates pertains to the nature of the pseudogap ground state. A conventional metallic ground state of the pseudogap region has been argued to host quantum oscillations upon destruction of the superconducting order parameter by modest magnetic fields. Here we use low applied measurement currents and millikelvin temperatures on ultra-pure single crystals of underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ to unearth an unconventional quantum vortex matter ground state characterized by vanishing electrical resistivity, magnetic hysteresis, and non-ohmic electrical transport characteristics beyond the highest laboratory accessible static fields. A new model of the pseudogap ground state is now required to explain quantum oscillations that are hosted by the bulk quantum vortex matter state without experiencing sizeable additional damping in the presence of a large maximum superconducting gap; possibilities include a pair density wave.

Intrinsic bulk quantum oscillations in a bulk unconventional insulator SmB$_6$

The finding of bulk quantum oscillations in the bulk Kondo insulator SmB$_6$, which has been proposed to be a correlated topological insulator, proved a considerable surprise. The subsequent measurement of bulk quantum oscillations in other correlated insulators including YbB$_{12}$ have lent support to our discovery of a class of unconventional insulators that are host to bulk quantum oscillations, of which SmB$_6$ was the first example. Here we perform a series of experiments to examine evidence for the intrinsic character of bulk quantum oscillations in floating zone-grown single crystals of SmB$_6$ that have been the subject of our quantum oscillation studies thus far. We present results of experiments including chemical composition analysis, magnetisation, thermal conductivity, electrical transport, and heat capacity on floating zone-grown single crystals of SmB$_6$, and a series of quantum oscillation experiments as a function of magnetic field, temperature, and magnetic field-orientation on single crystals of floating-zone grown SmB$_6$, LaB$_6$, and elemental Aluminium. Results of these experimental studies establish the intrinsic origin of quantum oscillations from the bulk of pristine floating zone-grown single crystals of SmB$_6$. The origin of the underlying bulk Fermi surface that bears close similarity with the unhybridised Fermi surface in metallic hexaborides despite the bulk insulating character of SmB$_6$ is thus at the heart of a theoretical mystery.

Hard antinodal gap revealed by quantum oscillations in the pseudogap regime of underdoped high-$T_{\rm c}$ superconductors

An understanding of the missing antinodal electronic excitations in the pseudogap state is essential for uncovering the physics of the underdoped cuprate high temperature superconductors. The majority of high temperature experiments performed thus far, however, have been unable to discern whether the antinodal states are rendered unobservable due to their damping, or whether they vanish due to their gapping. Here we distinguish between these two scenarios by using quantum oscillations to examine whether the small Fermi surface pocket, found to occupy only 2% of the Brillouin zone in the underdoped cuprates, exists in isolation against a majority of completely gapped density of states spanning the antinodes, or whether it is thermodynamically coupled to a background of ungapped antinodal states. We find that quantum oscillations associated with the small Fermi surface pocket exhibit a signature sawtooth waveform characteristic of an isolated two-dimensional Fermi surface pocket. This finding reveals that the antinodal states are destroyed by a hard gap that extends over the majority of the Brillouin zone, placing strong constraints on a drastic underlying origin of quasiparticle disappearance over almost the entire Brillouin zone in the pseudogap regime.

Magnetic anisotropy of the alkali iridate Na$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$ at high magnetic fields: evidence for strong ferromagnetic Kitaev correlations

The magnetic field response of the Mott-insulating honeycomb iridate Na$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$ is investigated using torque magnetometry measurements in magnetic fields up to 60 tesla. A peak-dip structure is observed in the torque response at magnetic fields corresponding to an energy scale close to the zigzag ordering ($\approx 15~K$) temperature. Using exact diagonalization calculations, we show that such a distinctive signature in the torque response constrains the effective spin models for these classes of Kitaev materials to ones with dominant ferromagnetic Kitaev interactions, while alternative models with dominant antiferromagnetic Kitaev interactions are excluded. We further show that at high magnetic fields, long range spin correlation functions decay rapidly, signaling a transition to a long-sought-after field-induced quantum spin liquid beyond the peak-dip structure. Kitaev systems are thus revealed to be excellent candidates for field-induced quantum spin liquids, similar physics having been suggested in another Kitaev material $α-$RuCl$_{3}$.

Fermi surfaces in Kondo insulators

We report magnetic quantum oscillations measured using torque magnetisation in the Kondo insulator YbB$_{12}$ and discuss the potential origin of the underlying Fermi surface. Observed quantum oscillations as well as complementary quantities such as a finite linear specific heat capacity in YbB$_{12}$ exhibit similarities with the Kondo insulator SmB$_6$, yet also crucial differences. Small heavy Fermi sections are observed in YbB$_{12}$ with similarities to the neighbouring heavy fermion semimetallic Fermi surface, in contrast to large light Fermi surface sections in SmB$_6$ which are more similar to the conduction electron Fermi surface. A rich spectrum of theoretical models is suggested to explain the origin across different Kondo insulating families of a bulk Fermi surface potentially from novel itinerant quasiparticles that couple to magnetic fields, yet do not couple to weak DC electric fields.

Fermi surface in the absence of a Fermi liquid in the Kondo insulator SmB$_6$

The search for a Fermi surface in the absence of a conventional Fermi liquid has thus far yielded very few potential candidates. Among promising materials are spin-frustrated Mott insulators near the insulator-metal transition, where theory predicts a Fermi surface associated with neutral low energy excitations. Here we reveal another route to experimentally realise a Fermi surface in the absence of a Fermi liquid by the experimental study of a Kondo insulator SmB$_6$ positioned close to the insulator-metal transition. We present experimental signatures down to low temperatures ($\ll 1$ K) associated with a Fermi surface in the bulk, including a sizeable linear specific heat coefficient, and on the application of a finite magnetic field, bulk magnetic quantum oscillations, finite quantum oscillatory entropy, and substantial enhancement in thermal conductivity well below the charge gap energy scale. Thus, the weight of evidence indicates that despite an extreme instance of Fermi liquid breakdown in Kondo insulating SmB$_6$, a Fermi surface arises from novel itinerant low energy excitations that couple to magnetic fields, but not weak DC electric fields.

Accessing the Full Superconducting Dome in Pristine YBa2Cu3O6+x Under Pressure

We attain the previously unaccessed full superconducting dome in a pristine high temperature cuprate superconductor by applying pressures up to 280 kbar to samples of near stoichiometric YBa2Cu3O7. The obtained superconducting phase boundary as a function of hole doping closely follows the superconducting dome in La2-xSrxCuO4. Measurements are now enabled to trace the evolution of various entangled phases and the Fermi surface from the underdoped to overdoped regime in a single high purity cuprate superconducting family of materials.

Fragile charge order in the non-superconducting ground state of the underdoped high temperature superconductors

The normal state in the hole underdoped copper oxide superconductors has proven to be a source of mystery for decades. The measurement of a small Fermi surface by quantum oscillations on suppression of superconductivity by high applied magnetic fields, together with complementary spectroscopic measurements in the hole underdoped copper oxide superconductors, point to a nodal electron pocket from charge order in YBa2Cu3O6+x. Here we report quantum oscillation measurements in the closely related stoichiometric material YBa2Cu4O8, which reveal similar Fermi surface properties to YBa2Cu3O6+x, despite an absence of charge order signatures in the same spectroscopic techniques such as x-ray diffraction that revealed signatures of charge order in YBa2Cu3O6+x. Fermi surface reconstruction in YBa2Cu4O8 is suggested to occur from magnetic field enhancement of charge order that is rendered fragile in zero magnetic fields because of its potential unconventional symmetry, and/or its occurrence as a subsidiary to more robust underlying electronic correlations.

Quantum Oscillations in Hole-Doped Cuprates

One of the leading challenges of condensed matter physics in the past few decades in an understanding of the high-temperature copper-oxide superconductors. While the d-wave character of the superconducting state is well understood, the normal state in the underdoped regime has eluded understanding. Here we review the past few years of quantum oscillation measurements performed in the underdoped cuprates that have culminated in an understanding of the normal ground state of these materials. A nodal electron pocket created by charge order is found to characterise the normal ground state in YBa2Cu3O6+x and is likely universal to a majority of the cuprate superconductors. An open question remains regarding the origin of the suppression of the antinodal density of states at the Fermi energy in the underdoped normal state, either from mainly charge correlations, or more likely, from mainly pairing and / or magnetic correlations that precede charge order.

Normal-state nodal electronic structure in underdoped high-Tc copper oxides

An outstanding problem in the field of high-transition-temperature (high Tc) superconductivity is the identification of the normal state out of which superconductivity emerges in the mysterious underdoped regime. The normal state uncomplicated by thermal fluctuations is effectively accessed by the use of applied magnetic fields sufficiently strong to suppress long-range superconductivity at low temperatures. Proposals in which the normal ground state is characterised by small Fermi surface pockets that exist in the absence of symmetry breaking have been superseded by models based on the existence of a superlattice that breaks the translational symmetry of the underlying lattice. Recently, a charge superlattice model that positions a small electron-like Fermi pocket in the vicinity of the nodes (where the superconducting gap is minimum) has been proposed a replacement for the prevalent superlattice models that position the Fermi pocket in the vicinity of the pseudogap at the antinodes (where the superconducting gap is maximum). Although some ingredients of symmetry breaking have been recently revealed by crystallographic studies, their relevance to the electronic structure remains unresolved. Here we report angle-resolved quantum oscillation measurements in the underdoped copper oxide YBa2Cu3O6+x. These measurements reveal a normal ground state comprising electron-like Fermi surface pockets located in the vicinity of the superconducting gap minima (or nodes), and further point to an underlying superlattice structure of low frequency and long wavelength with features in common with the charge order identified recently by complementary spectroscopic techniques.

Unconventional Fermi surface in an insulating state

Insulators occur in more than one guise, a recent finding was a class of topological insulators, which host a conducting surface juxtaposed with an insulating bulk. Here we report the observation of an unusual insulating state with an electrically insulating bulk that simultaneously yields bulk quantum oscillations with characteristics of an unconventional Fermi liquid. We present quantum oscillation measurements of magnetic torque in high purity single crystals of the Kondo insulator SmB6, which reveal quantum oscillation frequencies characteristic of a large three-dimensional conduction electron Fermi surface similar to the metallic rare earth hexaborides such as PrB6 and LaB6. The quantum oscillation amplitude strongly increases at low temperatures, appearing strikingly at variance with conventional metallic behaviour.

On the origin of the electronic anisotropy in iron pnicitde superconductors

We use polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy to study the anisotropy of the electronic characteristics of the iron-pnictide parent compounds $A$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($A$~=~Eu, Sr). We demonstrate that above the structural phase transition at Ts the dynamical anisotropic properties of the 122 compounds are governed by the emergence of $xy$-symmetry critical collective mode foretelling a condensation into a state with spontaneously broken four-fold symmetry at a temperature $T^{*}$. However, the mode's critical slowing down is intervened by a structural transition at Ts, about 80~K above $T^{*}$, resulting in an anisotropic density wave state.

Towards resolution of the Fermi surface in underdoped high-Tc superconductors

We survey recent experimental results including quantum oscillations and complementary measurements probing the electronic structure of underdoped cuprates, and theoretical proposals to explain them. We discuss quantum oscillations measured at high magnetic fields in the underdoped cuprates that reveal a small Fermi surface section comprising quasiparticles that obey Fermi-Dirac statistics, unaccompanied by other states of comparable thermodynamic mass at the Fermi level. The location of the observed Fermi surface section at the nodes is indicated by a body of evidence including the collapse in Fermi velocity measured by quantum oscillations, which is found to be associated with the nodal density of states observed in angular resolved photoemission, the persistence of quantum oscillations down to low fields in the vortex state, the small value of density of states from heat capacity and the multiple frequency quantum oscillation pattern consistent with nodal magnetic breakdown of bilayer-split pockets. A nodal Fermi surface pocket is further consistent with the observation of a density of states at the Fermi level concentrated at the nodes in photoemission experiments, and the antinodal pseudogap observed by photoemission, optical conductivity, nuclear magnetic resonance Knight shift, as well as other complementary diffraction, transport and thermodynamic measurements. One of the possibilities considered is that the small Fermi surface pockets observed at high magnetic fields can be understood in terms of Fermi surface reconstruction by a form of small wavevector charge order, observed over long lengthscales in experiments such as nuclear magnetic resonance and x-ray scattering, potentially accompanied by an additional mechanism to gap the antinodal density of states.

Quantum Oscillations in Iron Pnictide Superconductors

Insight into the electronic structure of the pnictide family of superconductors is obtained from quantum oscillation measurements. Here we review experimental quantum oscillation data that reveal a transformation from large quasi-two dimensional electron and hole cylinders in the paramagnetic overdoped members of the pnictide family to significantly smaller three-dimensional Fermi surface sections in the antiferromagnetic parent members, via a potential quantum critical point at which an effective mass enhancement is observed. Similarities with the Fermi surface evolution from the overdoped to the underdoped normal state of the cuprate superconducting family are discussed, along with the enhancement in antiferromagnetic correlations in both these classes of materials, and the potential implications for superconductivity.

Quantum oscillations from nodal bilayer magnetic breakdown in the underdoped high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O6+x

We report quantum oscillations in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.56 over a significantly large range in magnetic field extending from 24 to 101 T, enabling three well-spaced low frequencies at 440 T, 532 T, and 620 T to be clearly resolved. We show that a small nodal bilayer coupling that splits a nodal pocket into bonding and antibonding orbits yields a sequence of frequencies, F0 - ΔF, F0, and F0 + ΔF and accompanying beat pattern similar to that observed experimentally, on invoking magnetic breakdown tunneling at the nodes. The relative amplitudes of the multiple frequencies observed experimentally in quantum oscillation measurements are shown to be reproduced using a value of nodal bilayer gap quantitatively consistent with that measured in photoemission experiments in the underdoped regime.
