Covariance in self dual inhomogeneous models of effective quantum geometry: Spherical symmetry and Gowdy systems

When applying the techniques of Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG) to symmetry-reduced gravitational systems, one first regularizes the scalar constraint using holonomy corrections, prior to quantization. In inhomogeneous system, where a residual spatial diffeomorphism symmetry survives, such modification of the gauge generator generating time reparametrization can potentially lead to deformations or anomalies in the modified algebra of first class constraints. When working with self-dual variables, it has already been shown that, for spherically symmetric geometry coupled to a scalar field, the holonomy-modified constraints do not generate any modifications to general covariance, as one faces in the real variables formula- tion, and can thus accommodate local degrees of freedom in such inhomogeneous models. In this paper, we extend this result to Gowdy cosmologies in the self-dual Ashtekar formulation. Furthermore, we show that the introduction of a $\barμ$-scheme in midisuperspace models, as is required in the `improved dynamics' of LQG, is possible in the self-dual formalism while being out of reach in the current effective models suing real-valued Ashtekar-Barbero variables. Our results indicate the advantages of using the self-dual variables to obtain a covariant loop regularization prior to quantization in inhomogeneous symmetry reduced polymer models, implementing additionally the crucial $\barμ$-scheme, and thus a consistent semiclassical limit.

Effective black-to-white hole bounces: The cost of surgery

We investigate possible geometries allowing transitions from a black hole to a white hole spacetime, by placing a space-like thin shell between them. Such proposals have been advanced recently to account for singularity-resolution in black-hole spacetimes. This space-like shell can be extended to be outside the event horizon and, thereby, reproduce some of the features of these proposals. On the other hand, if the space-like shell is confined fully within the horizon, then it results in a bounce near a space-like singularity inside the black hole. For both cases, the null energy condition is necessarily violated, at least effectively, due to introduction of quantum effects. If the shell, with a non-trivial negative tension, extends beyond the event horizon, then one can see effects of quantum gravity modifications even outside the horizon as a cost of such a space-like surgery. Naturally, one needs to consider whether these types of manufactured spacetimes violates any known laws of nature, allowing for reasonable assumptions. After critically comparing our results with several models in the literature, we reiterate a new way to avoid such black-hole singularities without leaving a white-hole remnant via a quantum bounce.

On singularity-resolution in mimetic gravity

Recently, it was shown that modified mimetic gravity, with a $f(\squareϕ)$ term, results in a singularity-free model of gravity, for both cosmological and black hole spacetimes [1, 2]. In this work, we analyze this model further and show that, since the function $f$ was tuned to vanish rapidly for small values of the argument, the non-singular bounce relies heavily on a subtle branch changing mechanism for the multi-valued function $f$. Furthermore, this mechanism has interesting implications for the proposed link between this model and loop quantum cosmology.

Constraining the loop quantum gravity parameter space from phenomenology

Development of quantum gravity theories rarely takes inputs from experimental physics. In this letter, we take a small step towards correcting this by establishing a paradigm for incorporating putative quantum corrections, arising from canonical quantum gravity (QG) theories, in deriving \textit{falsifiable} modified dispersion relations (MDRs) for particles on a deformed Minkowski space-time. This allows us to differentiate and, hopefully, pick between several quantization choices via \textit{testable, state-of-the-art} phenomenological predictions. Although a few explicit examples from loop quantum gravity (LQG) (such as the regularization scheme used or the representation of the gauge group) are shown here to establish the claim, our framework is more general and is capable of addressing other quantization ambiguities within LQG and also those arising from other similar QG approaches.

Extending general covariance: Moyal-type noncommutative manifolds

In the Hamiltonian formulation of general relativity, Einstein's equation is replaced by a set of four constraints. Classically, the constraints can be identified with the generators of the hypersurface-deformation Lie algebroid (HDA) that belongs to the groupoid of finite evolutions in space-time. Taken over to deformed general relativity, this connection allows one to study possible Drinfeld twists of space-time diffeomorphisms with Hopf-algebra techniques. After a review of noncommutative differential structures, two cases --- twisted diffeomorphisms with standard action and deformed (or $\star$-) diffeomorphisms with deformed action --- are considered in this paper. The HDA of twisted diffeomorphisms agrees with the classical one, while the HDA obtained from deformed diffeomorphisms is modified due to the explicit presence of $\star$-products in the brackets. The results allow one to distinguish between twisted and deformed symmetries, and they indicate that the latter should be regarded as the relevant symmetry transformations for noncommutative manifolds. The algebroid brackets maintain the same general structure regardless of space-time noncommutativity, but they still show important consequences of non-locality.

Klein-Gordon field from the XXZ Heisenberg model

We examine the recently introduced idea of Spin-Field Correspondence focusing on the example of the spin system described by the XXZ Heisenberg model with external magnetic field. The Hamiltonian of the resulting nonlinear scalar field theory is derived for arbitrary value of the anisotropy parameter $Δ$. We show that the linear scalar field theory is reconstructed in the large spin limit. For $Δ=1$ a non-relativistic scalar field theory satisfying the Born reciprocity principle is recovered. As expected, for the vanishing anisotropy parameter $Δ\rightarrow 0$ the standard relativistic Klein-Gordon field is obtained. Various aspects of the obtained class of the scalar fields are studied, including the fate of the relativistic symmetries and the properties of the emerging interaction terms. We show that, in a certain limit, the so-called polymer quantisation of the field variables is recovered. This and other discussed properties suggest a possible relevance of the considered framework in the context of quantum gravity.

Comment on "New variables for 1+1 dimensional gravity"

The results reported by Gambini, Pullin and Rastgoo in (2010 Class. Quantum Grav. 27 025002) are special cases of a general treatment of canonical variables for dilaton gravity models published in (2009 Class. Quantum Grav. 26 035018).

New Hamiltonians for loop quantum cosmology with arbitrary spin representations

In loop quantum cosmology, one has to make a choice of SU(2) irreducible representation in which to compute holonomies and regularize the curvature of the connection. The systematic choice made in the literature is to work in the fundamental representation, and very little is known about the physics associated with higher spin labels. This constitutes an ambiguity whose understanding, we believe, is fundamental for connecting loop quantum cosmology to full theories of quantum gravity like loop quantum gravity, its spin foam formulation, or cosmological group field theory. We take a step in this direction by providing here a new closed formula for the Hamiltonian of flat FLRW models regularized in a representation of arbitrary spin. This expression is furthermore polynomial in the basic variables which correspond to well-defined operators in the quantum theory, takes into account the so-called inverse-volume corrections, and treats in a unified way two different regularization schemes for the curvature. After studying the effective classical dynamics corresponding to single and multiple spin Hamiltonians, we study the behavior of the critical density when the number of representations is increased, and the stability of the difference equations in the quantum theory.

Signature change in loop quantum gravity: General midisuperspace models and dilaton gravity

Models of loop quantum gravity based on real connections have a deformed notion of general covariance, which leads to the phenomenon of signature change. This result is confirmed here in a general analysis of all midisuperspace models without local degrees of freedom. As a subclass of models, 2-dimensional theories of dilaton gravity appear, but a larger set of examples is possible based only on the condition of anomaly freedom. While the classical dilaton gravity models are the only such systems without deformed covariance, they do give rise to signature change when holonomy modifications are included.

Signature change in 2-dimensional black-hole models of loop quantum gravity

Signature change has been identified as a generic consequence of holonomy modifications in spherically symmetric models of loop quantum gravity with real connections, which includes modified Schwarzschild solutions. Here, this result is extended to 2-dimensional dilaton models and to different choices of canonical variables, including in particular the Callan-Giddings-Harvey-Strominger (CGHS) solution. New obstructions are found to coupling matter and to including operator-ordering effects in an anomaly-free manner.

Monopole star products are non-alternative

Non-associative algebras appear in some quantum-mechanical systems, for instance if a charged particle in a distribution of magnetic monopoles is considered. Using methods of deformation quantization it is shown here, that algebras for such systems cannot be alternative, i.e. their associator cannot be completely anti-symmetric.

Hypersurface-deformation algebroids and effective space-time models

In canonical gravity, covariance is implemented by brackets of hypersurface-deformation generators forming a Lie algebroid. Lie algebroid morphisms therefore allow one to relate different versions of the brackets that correspond to the same space-time structure. An application to examples of modified brackets found mainly in models of loop quantum gravity can in some cases map the space-time structure back to the classical Riemannian form after a field redefinition. For one type of quantum corrections (holonomies), signature change appears to be a generic feature of effective space-time, and is shown here to be a new quantum space-time phenomenon which cannot be mapped to an equivalent classical structure. In low-curvature regimes, our constructions prove the existence of classical space-time structures assumed elsewhere in models of loop quantum cosmology, but also shows the existence of additional quantum corrections that have not always been included.

Linking loop quantum gravity quantization ambiguities with phenomenology

Fundamental quantum gravity theories are known to be notoriously difficult to extract viable testable predictions out of. In this paper, we aim to incorporate putative quantum corrections coming from loop quantum gravity in deriving modified dispersion relations for particles on a deformed Minkowski spacetime. We show how different choices of the Immirzi parameter can, in some cases, serendipitously lead to different outcomes for such modifications, depending on the quantization scheme chosen. This allows one to differentiate between these quantization choices via testable phenomenological predictions.

A new look at scalar perturbations in loop quantum cosmology: (un)deformed algebra approach using self dual variables

Scalar cosmological perturbations in loop quantum cosmology (LQC) is revisited in a covariant manner, using self dual Ashtekar variables. For real-valued Ashtekar-Barbero variables, this `deformed algebra' approach has been shown to implement holonomy corrections from loop quantum gravity (LQG) in a consistent manner, albeit deforming the algebra of modified constraints in the process. This deformation has serious conceptual ramifications, not the least of them being an effective `signature-change' in the deep quantum regime. In this paper, we show that working with self dual variables lead to an undeformed algebra of hypersurface deformations, even after including holonomy corrections in the effective constraints. As a necessary consequence, the diffeomorphism constraint picks up non-perturbative quantum corrections thus hinting at a modification of the underlying space-time structure, a novel ingredient compared to the usual treatment of (spatial) diffeomorphisms in LQG. This work extends a similar result obtained in the context of spherically symmetric gravity coupled to a scalar field, suggesting that self dual variables could be better suited than their real counterparts to treat inhomogeneous LQG models.

Spherically symmetric sector of self dual Ashtekar gravity coupled to matter: Anomaly-free algebra of constraints with holonomy corrections

Using self dual Ashtekar variables, we investigate (at the effective level) the spherically symmetry reduced model of loop quantum gravity, both in vacuum and when coupled to a scalar field. Within the real Ashtekar-Barbero formulation, the system scalar field coupled to spherically symmetric gravity is known to possess a non closed (quantum) algebra of constraints once the holonomy corrections are introduced, which forbids the loop quantization of the model. Moreover, the vacuum case, while not anomalous, introduces modifications which are usually interpreted as an effective signature change of the metric in the deep quantum region. We show in this paper that both those complications disappear when working with self dual Ashtekar variables, both in the vacuum case and in the case of gravity minimally coupled to a scalar field. In this framework, the algebra of the holonomy corrected constraints is anomaly free and reproduces the classical hypersurface deformation algebra without any deformations. A possible path towards quantization of this model is briefly discussed.

Testing non-associative quantum mechanics

The familiar concepts of state vectors and operators in quantum mechanics rely on associative products of observables. However, these notions do not apply to some exotic systems such as magnetic monopoles, which have long been known to lead to non-associative algebras. Their quantum physics has remained obscure. This letter presents the first derivation of potentially testable physical results in non-associative quantum mechanics, based on effective potentials. They imply new effects which cannot be mimicked in usual quantum mechanics with standard magnetic fields.

Cosmic variance in inflation with two light scalars

We examine the squeezed limit of the bispectrum when a light scalar with arbitrary non-derivative self-interactions is coupled to the inflaton. We find that when the hidden sector scalar is sufficiently light ($m\lesssim0.1\,H$), the coupling between long and short wavelength modes from the series of higher order correlation functions (from arbitrary order contact diagrams) causes the statistics of the fluctuations to vary in sub-volumes. This means that observations of primordial non-Gaussianity cannot be used to uniquely reconstruct the potential of the hidden field. However, the local bispectrum induced by mode-coupling from these diagrams always has the same squeezed limit, so the field's locally determined mass is not affected by this cosmic variance.

Minisuperspace models as infrared contributions

A direct correspondence of quantum mechanics as a minisuperspace model for a self-interacting scalar quantum-field theory is established by computing, in several models, the infrared contributions to 1-loop effective potentials of Coleman--Weinberg type. A minisuperspace approximation rather than truncation is thereby obtained. By this approximation, the spatial averaging scale of minisuperspace models is identified with an infrared scale (but not a regulator or cut-off) delimiting the modes included in the minisuperspace model. Some versions of the models studied here have discrete space or modifications of the Hamiltonian expected from proposals of loop quantum gravity. They shed light on the question of how minisuperspace models of quantum cosmology can capture features of full quantum gravity. While it is shown that modifications of the Hamiltonian can well be described by minisuperspace truncations, some related phenomena such as signature change, confirmed and clarified here for modified scalar field theories, require at least a perturbative treatment of inhomogeneity beyond a strict minisuperspace model. The new methods suggest a systematic extension of minisuperspace models by a canonical effective formulation of perturbative inhomogeneity.
