Reheating the D-brane universe via instant preheating

We investigate a possibility of reheating in a scenario of D-brane inflation in a warped deformed conifold background which includes perturbative corrections to throat geometry sourced by chiral operator of dimension 3/2 in the CFT. The effective D-brane potential, in this case, belongs to the class of non-oscillatory models of inflation for which the conventional reheating mechanism does not work. We find that gravitational particle production is inefficient and leads to reheating temperature of the order of ${10^8} GeV$. We show that instant preheating is quite suitable to the present scenario and can easily reheat universe to a temperature which is higher by about three orders of magnitudes than its counter part associated with gravitational particle production. The reheating temperature is shown to be insensitive to a particular choice of inflationary parameters suitable to observations.

Higher order corrections to Heterotic M-theory inflation

We investigate inflation driven by $N$ dynamical five-branes in Heterotic M-theory using the scalar potential derived from the open membrane instanton sector. At leading order the resulting theory can be mapped to power law inflation, however more generally one may expect higher order corrections to be important. We consider a simple class of such corrections, which imposes tight bounds on the number of branes required for inflation.

Warm tachyonic inflation in warped background

We analyze warm tachyonic inflation, proposed in the literature, but from the viewpoint of four dimensional effective action for tachyon field on a non-BPS D3-brane. We find that consistency with observational data on density perturbation and validity of effective action requires warped compactification. The number of background branes which source the flux is found to be of the order of 10 in contrast to the order of $10^{14}$ in the standard cold inflationary scenario.

Prospects of inflation with perturbed throat geometry

We study brane inflation in a warped deformed conifold background that includes general possible corrections to the throat geometry sourced by coupling to the bulk of a compact Calabi-Yau space. We focus specifically, on the perturbation by chiral operator of dimension 3/2 in the CFT. We find that the effective potential in this case can give rise to required number of e-foldings and the spectral index $n_S$ consistent with observation. The tensor to scalar ratio of perturbations is generally very low in this scenario. The COBE normalization, however, poses certain difficulties which can be circumvented provided model parameters are properly fine tuned. We find the numerical values of parameters which can give rise to enough inflation, observationally consistent values of density perturbations, scalar to tensor ratio of perturbations and the spectral index $n_S$.

Proper acceleration, geometric tachyon and dynamics of a fundamental string near D$p$ branes

We present a detailed analysis of our recent observation that the origin of the geometric tachyon, which arises when a D$p$-brane propagates in the vicinity of a stack of coincident NS5-branes, is due to the proper acceleration generated by the background dilaton field. We show that when a fundamental string (F-string), described by the Nambu-Goto action, is moving in the background of a stack of coincident D$p$-branes, the geometric tachyon mode can also appear since the overall conformal mode of the induced metric for the string can act as a source for proper acceleration. We also studied the detailed dynamics of the F-string as well as the instability by mapping the Nambu-Goto action of the F-string to the tachyon effective action of the non-BPS D-string. We qualitatively argue that the condensation of the geometric tachyon is responsible for the (F,D$p$) bound state formation.

Thermodynamics of Born-Infeld Black Holes

We discuss the horizon structure for Born-Infeld black holes, in the context of Einstein-Born-Infeld gravity. We show that the entropy function formalism agrees with a direct calculation of the entropy. With the entropy function formalism we also obtain the entropy when an axion-dilaton system as well as gravitational derivative corrections are included.

Origin of the geometric tachyon

The motion of a Dp-brane in the background of a stack of coincident NS5-branes is analysed as the motion of a relativistic point particle in the transverse space of the five-branes. In this system, the particle experiences a proper acceleration orthogonal to its proper velocity due to the background dilaton field which changes the dynamics from that of a simple geodesic motion. In particular, we show that in the vicinity of the five-branes, it is this acceleration which is responsible for modifying the motion of the radial mode to that of an inverted simple harmonic oscillator leading to the tachyonic instability.

Prospects of inflation in delicate D-brane cosmology

We study D-brane inflation in a warped conifold background that includes brane-position dependent corrections for the nonperturbative superpotential. Instead of stabilizing the volume modulus chi at instantaneous minima of the potential and studying the inflation dynamics with an effective single field (radial distance between a brane and an anti-brane) phi, we investigate the multi-field inflation scenario involving these two fields. The two-field dynamics with the potential V(phi, chi) in this model is significantly different from the effective single-field description in terms of the field phi when the field chi is integrated out. The latter picture underestimates the total number of e-foldings even by one order of magnitude. We show that a correct single-field description is provided by a field psi obtained from a rotation in the two-field space along the background trajectory. This model can give a large number of e-foldings required to solve flatness and horizon problems at the expense of fine-tunings of model parameters. We also estimate the spectra of density perturbations and show that the slow-roll parameter eta_{psi psi}=M_{pl}^2 V_{,psi psi}/V in terms of the rotated field psi determines the spectral index of scalar metric perturbations. We find that it is generally difficult to satisfy, simultaneously, both constraints of the spectral index and the COBE normalization, while the tensor to scalar ratio is sufficiently small to match with observations.

alpha'-Corrections to Heterotic Superstring Effective Action Revisited

In this letter we establish that the supersymmetric R^2 effective action for the heterotic string, obtained from the supersymmetrisation of the Lorentz Chern-Simons term, is to order $α'$ equivalent modulo field redefinitions to heterotic string effective actions computed by different methods.

Gauging CSO groups in N=4 Supergravity

We investigate a class of CSO-gaugings of N=4 supergravity coupled to six vector multiplets. Using the CSO-gaugings we do not find a vacuum that is stable against all scalar perturbations at the point where the matter fields are turned off. However, at this point we do find a stable cosmological scaling solution.

Inflation from D3-brane motion in the background of D5-branes

We study inflation arising from the motion of a BPS D3-brane in the background of a stack of k parallel D5-branes. There are two scalar fields in this set up-- (i) the radion field R, a real scalar field, and (ii) a complex tachyonic scalar field chi living on the world volume of the open string stretched between the D3 and D5 branes. We find that inflation is realized by the potential of the radion field, which satisfies observational constraints coming from the Cosmic Microwave Background. After the radion becomes of order the string length scale l_s, the dynamics is governed by the potential of the complex scalar field. Since this field has a standard kinematic term, reheating can be successfully realized by the mechanism of tachyonic preheating with spontaneous symmetry breaking.

Inflation and dark energy arising from geometrical tachyons

We study the motion of a BPS D3-brane in the NS5-brane ring background. The radion field becomes tachyonic in this geometrical set up. We investigate the potential of this geometrical tachyon in the cosmological scenario for inflation as well as dark energy. We evaluate the spectra of scalar and tensor perturbations generated during tachyon inflation and show that this model is compatible with recent observations of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) due to an extra freedom of the number of NS5-branes. It is not possible to explain the origin of both inflation and dark energy by using a single tachyon field, since the energy density at the potential minimum is not negligibly small because of the amplitude of scalar perturbations set by CMB anisotropies. However geometrical tachyon can account for dark energy when the number of NS5-branes is large, provided that inflation is realized by another scalar field.

Group Manifold Reduction of Dual N=1 d=10 Supergravity

We perform a group manifold reduction of the dual version of N=1 d=10 supergravity to four dimensions. The effects of the 3- and 4-form gauge fields in the resulting gauged N=4 d=4 supergravity are studied in particular. The example of the group manifold SU(2)xSU(2) is worked out in detail, and we compare for this case the four-dimensional scalar potential with gauged N=4 supergravity.

Non-minimally Coupled Tachyonic Inflation in Warped String Background

We show that the non-minimal coupling of tachyon field to the scalar curvature, as proposed by Piao et al, with the chosen coupling parameter does not produce the effective potential where the tachyon field can roll down from T=0 to large $T$ along the slope of the potential. We find a correct choice of the parameters which ensures this requirement and support slow-roll inflation. However, we find that the cosmological parameter found from the analysis of the theory are not in the range obtained from observations. We then invoke warped compactification and varying dilaton field over the compact manifold, as proposed by Raeymaekers, to show that in such a setup the observed parameter space can be ensured.

Hybrid Inflation and Brane-Antibrane System

We study a string theory inspired model for hybrid inflation in the context of a brane-antibrane system partially compactified on a compact submanifold of (a caricature of) a Calabi-Yau manifold. The interbrane distance acts as the inflaton, whereas the end of the inflationary epoch is brought about by the rapid rolling of the tachyon. The number of e-foldings is sufficiently large and is controlled by the initial conditions. The slow roll parameters, however, are essentially determined by the geometry and have little parametric dependence. Primordial density fluctuations can be made consistent with current data at the cost of reducing the string scale.

Electromagnetic Strings: Complementarity between Time and Temperature

We investigate some of the intricate features in a gravity decoupling limit of a open bosonic string theory, in a constant electromagnetic (EM-) field. We explain the subtle nature of space-time at short distances, due to its entanglement with the gauge field windings in the theory. Incorporating the mass-shell condition in the theory, we show that the time coordinate is small, of the order of EM-string scale, and the space coordinates are large. We perform a careful analysis in the critical regime to describe the decoupling of a series of gauge-string windings in successions, just below the Hagedorn temperature. We argue for the condensation of gauge-string at the Hagedorn temperature, which is followed by the decoupling of tachyonic particles. We demonstrate the phenomena by revoking the effective noncommutative dynamics for the D(3)-brane and obtain nonlinear corrections to U(1) gauge theory. We discuss the spontaneous breaking of noncommutative U(1) symmetry and show that the Hagedorn phase is described by the noninteracting gauge particles. The notion of time reappears in the phase at the expense of temperature. It suggests a complementarity between two distinct notions, time and temperature, at short distances.
