Cooperative electron-phonon interaction in molecular chains

Using a controlled analytic treatment, we derive a model that generically describes cooperative strong electron-phonon interaction (EPI) in one-band and two-band Jahn-Teller (JT) systems. The model involves a {\em next-nearest-neighbor} hopping and a nearest-neighbor repulsion. Rings with odd number of sites (o-rings) belong to a different universality class compared to rings with even number (e-rings). The e-rings, upon tuning repulsion, undergo a dramatic discontinuous transition to a {\em conducting commensurate} charge density wave (CDW) state with a period independent of filling.

Phase transition and phase diagram at a general filling in the spinless one-dimensional Holstein Model

Among the mechanisms for lattice structural deformation, the electron-phonon interaction mediated Peierls charge-density-wave (CDW) instability in single band low-dimensional systems is perhaps the most ubiquitous. The standard mean-field picture predicts that the CDW transition occurs at all fillings and all values of the electron-phonon coupling $g$ and the adiabaticity parameter $t/ω_0$. Here, we correct the mean-field expression for the Peierls instability condition by showing that the non-interacting static susceptibility, at twice the Fermi momentum, should be replaced by the dynamic one. We derive the Luttinger liquid (LL) to CDW transition condition, {\it exact to second order in a novel blocked perturbative approach}, for the spinless one-dimensional Holstein model in the adiabatic regime. The small parameter is the ratio $g ω_0/t$. We present the phase diagram at non-half-filling by obtaining the surprising result that the CDW occurs in a more restrictive region of a two parameter ($g^2 ω_0/t$ and $t/ω_0$) space than at half-filling.

Many-Polaron Effects in the Holstein Model

We derive an effective polaronic interaction Hamiltonian, {\it exact to second order in perturbation}, for the spinless one-dimensional Holstein model. The small parameter is given by the ratio of the hopping term ($t$) to the polaronic energy ($g^2 ω_0$) in all the region of validity for our perturbation; however, the exception being the regime of extreme anti-adiabaticity ($t/ω_0 \le 0.1$) and small electron-phonon coupling ($g < 1$) where the small parameter is $t/ω_0$. We map our polaronic Hamiltonian onto a next-to-nearest-neighbor interaction anisotropic Heisenberg spin model. By studying the mass gap and the power-law exponent of the spin-spin correlation function for our Heisenberg spin model, we analyze the Luttinger liquid to charge-density-wave transition at half-filling in the effective polaronic Hamiltonian. We calculate the structure factor at all fillings and find that the spin-spin correlation length decreases as one deviates from half-filling. We also extend our derivation of polaronic Hamiltonian to $d$-dimensions.

An analytic treatment of the Gibbs-Pareto behavior in wealth distribution

We develop a general framework, based on Boltzmann transport theory, to analyze the distribution of wealth in societies. Within this framework we derive the distribution function of wealth by using a two-party trading model for the poor people while for the rich people a new model is proposed where interaction with wealthy entities (huge reservoir) is relevant. At equilibrium, the interaction with wealthy entities gives a power-law (Pareto-like) behavior in the wealth distribution while the two-party interaction gives a Boltzmann-Gibbs distribution.

A distribution function analysis of wealth distribution

We develop a general framework to analyze the distribution functions of wealth and income. Within this framework we study wealth distribution in a society by using a model which turns on two-party trading for poor people while for rich people interaction with wealthy entities (huge reservoir) is relevant. At equilibrium, the interaction with wealthy entities gives a power law (Pareto-like) behavior in the wealth distribution while the two party interaction gives a distribution similar to that reported earlier.

Orbital ordering in undoped manganites using Jahn-Teller interaction

To understand the orbital ordering of $LaMnO_3$ in the ground state, we study it in the A-type spin antiferromagnetic state. We calculate the two-dimensional response functions associated with the Jahn-Teller $Q_2$ and $Q_3$ distortions and find that they diverge at the wavevector $π$,$π$). Furthermore, the $Q_2$ response function diverges faster which indicates that perhaps the ordering of the orbitals at low temperatures is dominated by the $Q_2$ distortion. We calculate the ground state energy for the cases when only one of the $Q_2$ and $Q_3$ modes is excited cooperatively and find that the $Q_2$ excited state yields lower energy.

Jahn-Teller polarons and their superconductivity in a molecular conductor

We present a theoretical study of a possibility of superconductivity in a three dimensional molecular conductor in which the interaction between electrons in doubly degenerate molecular orbitals and an {\em intra}molecular vibration mode is large enough to lead to the formation of $E\otimes β$ Jahn-Teller small polarons. We argue that the effective polaron-polaron interaction can be attractive for material parameters realizable in molecular conductors. This interaction is the source of superconductivity in our model. On analyzing superconducting instability in the weak and strong coupling regimes of this attractive interaction, we find that superconducting transition temperatures up to 100 K are achievable in molecular conductors within this mechanism. We also find, for two particles per molecular site, a novel Mott insulating state in which a polaron singlet occupies one of the doubly degenerate orbitals on each site. Relevance of this study in the search for new molecular superconductors is pointed out.

Analytic treatment of a trading market model

We mathematically analyze a simple market model where trading at each point in time involves only two agents with the sum of their money being conserved and with neither parties resulting with negative money after the interaction process. The exchange involves random re-distribution among the two players of a fixed fraction of their total money. We obtain a simple integral nonlinear equation for the money distribution. We find that the zero savings and finite savings cases belong to different universality classes. While the zero savings case can be solved analytically, the finite savings solution is obtained by numerically solving the integral equation. We find remarkable agreement with results obtained by other researchers using sophisticated numerical techniques.

Colossal Magnetoresistance using the Small Polaron Picture with Finite Bandwidth Effects

We present a small polaron picture and show that finite bandwidth effects are important to understand colossal magnetoresistance. Besides the polaron size parameter, we show that there is another parameter (adiabaticity parameter) that is relevant to studying magnetoresistance. We find that for fixed values of the polaron size parameter an increase in the adiabaticity parameter increases the magnetoresistance. The magnetic transition is studied within a mean field approach. We point out important oversights in the literature. We find that for the reported values of the bandwidth (based on band structure calculations) and for experimentally determined values of activation energy and Debye frequency, the calculated values of the magnetoresistance compare favorably with experimental ones. We calculate the optical conductivity too and find that there is reasonable agreement with experiment.

Mean-Field Approach to Charge, Orbital, and Spin Ordering in Manganites

We present a mean-field theory of charge, orbital, and spin ordering in manganites at 50% and 0% dopings by considering Jahn-Teller interaction, nearest-neighbor repulsion, and no single-site double occupancy. For spinless fermions, we show that Jahn-Teller distortion and charge-orbital ordering occur simultaneously. In our two-dimensional model at 50% doping, for small nearest-neighbor repulsion the system is orbitally polarized while for larger repulsion the system undergoes CE type ordering. As for the 0% doping case, the ground state is orbitally antiferromagnetic. Upon including spin degree of freedom, at both 50% and 0% dopings the ordering remains the same at small antiferromagnetic coupling between adjacent core spins.

Comment on ``Spin Dependent Hopping and Colossal Negative Magnetoresistance in Epitaxial $Nd_{0.52}Sr_{0.48}MnO_{3}$ Films in Fields up to 50 T''

Recently Wagner et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. Vol. 81, P. 3980 (1998)] proposed that Mott's original model be modified to incorporate a hopping barrier which depends on the misorientation between the spins of electrons at the initial and the final states in an elementary process. They further claimed that using the model they can explain the observed scaling behavior-- negative-magnetoresistivity scaling proportional to the Brillouin function $\cal{B}$ in the ferromagnetic state and to ${\cal{B}}^2$ in the paramagnetic state. In this comment we argue that the modification needed for Mott's original model is different from that proposed by Wagner et al. and further show that our picture will successfully explain the observed scaling in the two regimes.

Mixed Charge-Spin Response Functions of an Arbitrarily Polarized Electron Gas

In this paper, using different approaches we demonstrate the equality of the two mixed charge-spin response functions of a spin-polarized electron gas when orbital effects are negligible. Within a generalized STLS approximation we show that the two mixed responses are equal. We also present arguments for the equality of the two dynamic responses by considering a symmetry of the effective screened interaction between two opposite spin electrons. Furthermore, using the reflection symmetry of the system and the fact that the hamiltonian is real we prove rigorously that the two responses coincide identically.

Screened Interaction and Self-Energy in an Infinitesimally Polarized Electron Gas via the Kukkonen-Overhauser Method

The screened electron-electron interaction $W_{σ, σ'}$ and the electron self-energy in an infinitesimally polarized electron gas are derived by extending the approach of Kukkonen and Overhauser. Various quantities in the expression for $W_{σ, σ'}$ are identified in terms of the relevant response functions of the electron gas. The self-energy is obtained from $W_{σ, σ'}$ by making use of the GW method which in this case represents a consistent approximation. Contact with previous calculations is made.

Small Magnetic Polaron Picture of Colossal Magnetoresistance in Manganites

We present a small-but-sizeable magnetic polaron picture where transport at high temperatures is activated while at low temperatures it is band-like. We show that both double exchange and finite bandwidth effects are important to understand colossal magnetoresistance as well as the coincidence of the metal-insulator and the ferromagnetic transitions in manganites. The magnetic transition is explained using band-like motion of the polarons.
