Symmetry-selective field-induced triplet superconductivity in Ising-superconductor monolayer NbSe$_2$

We investigate superconductivity in monolayer NbSe$_2$, an Ising superconductor, under an in-plane Zeeman field $h_x$, focusing on the emergence of symmetry selected equal-spin triplet pairing. Using a self-consistent Bogoliubov--de Gennes approach with realistic hopping parameters for monolayer NbSe$_2$ on a triangular lattice, we determine the energetically favored singlet pairing states in a range of chemical potentials $μ$ for onsite, nearest-neighbor, and next-nearest-neighbor pairing channels, and map the resulting phase diagram in $(h_x,μ)$ plane. A momentum-resolved analysis reveals distinct dominant contributions in order parameters arise from the surroundings of $Γ$, $K$, and $K'$ points of the Brillouin zone. We find that an in-plane magnetic field helps to induce a triplet pairing whose symmetry is determined by the parent singlet state, upon opening the triplet interaction channel. For the nonlocal pairing channels, chiral-$d$ pairing is energetically favored and it induces chiral-$p$ equal-spin triplet component with opposite chirality. We further find that Rashba spin-orbit coupling, relevant to substrate coupling and electrostatic gating, suppresses the superconducting orders and reduces the critical field. Our results establish a direct link between the symmetry of the parent singlet condensate and the emergent triplet superconductivity, highlighting monolayer NbSe$_2$ as a promising platform for field-tunable mixed-parity superconducting states.

Phase-Shifted Planar Hall and Magnetoresistive Responses in Weyl Semimetals

The planar Hall resistivity and magnetoresistivity of Weyl semimetals are conventionally expected to exhibit $\sin 2ϕ$ and $\cos2ϕ$ angular dependences, respectively, where $ϕ$ is the angle between electric and magnetic fields. However, experiments reveal shifted extrema in the planar Hall signal and sign reversals in magnetoresistivity at $ϕ< π/4$. Here, using a diagrammatic Kubo-formula approach, we identify an intrinsic quadratic magnetic-field contribution to the planar transport response that is absent in conventional semiclassical description. This contribution introduces an additional term proportional to $\cos 2 ϕ$ and $\sin 2ϕ$, respectively, in transverse and longitudinal conductivities. Consequently, both planar Hall and magnetoresistive responses acquire a phase-shifted form $\sin 2(ϕ+ϕ_r)$ and $\cos 2(ϕ+ϕ_r)$, respectively. The same phase shift extracted independently from longitudinal and transverse responses quantitatively describes available experimental data. Our results establish a microscopic origin of the anomalous angular dependence observed in Weyl semimetals.

Probing Axion Dark Matter via the Chiral Magnetic Effect in Zero-Bias Weyl Semimetals

Sub-eV axion dark matter behaves as a coherent classical field that can induce macroscopic current in quantum materials. We explore the possibility of axion detection via the chiral magnetic effect in zero-bias Weyl semimetals under a static external magnetic field. We demonstrate that for a $1 \, {\rm cm^2}$ sample in a realistic $10 \, {\rm T}$ magnetic field, the signal remains in the observable femto-ampere range. Utilizing state-of-the-art SQUID-based current readout, the setup can probe axion-electron couplings below existing stellar cooling bounds across a broad range of axion masses.

Trimerized Spin-$1/2$ Chain: Emergent Low-Energy Hamiltonian, Higher-Energy Excitations, and Magnetic and Thermodynamic Responses

We investigate a spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic chain with trimerized exchange couplings relevant to Na$_2$Cu$_3$Ge$_4$O$_{12}$. We show that the low-energy Hilbert space maps onto an effective Heisenberg chain of composite spin-1/2 trimer degrees of freedom with positive coupling, enabling an exact spinon excitations via the Bethe ansatz. To access higher-energy dynamics, we develop a self-consistent Jordan-Wigner mean-field theory that yields three fermionic bands reflecting the underlying trimer structure. Remarkably, this approach reproduces the exact low-energy spinon continuum while predicting two additional higher-energy excitation bands consistent with the experimental observations and previous numerical simulations. The theory further captures the 1/3 magnetization plateau under an applied magnetic field, and provides testable predictions in magnetic susceptibility and specific heat. Our results establish a unified framework connecting low- and high-energy excitations in trimerized quantum spin chains.

Fermionic Band Dispersions and an Evidence of Cooperon Excitations in a Spin-$1/2$ Trimer Chain

We obtain the solution of the Hamiltonian of an antiferromagnetically coupled spin-$1/2$ trimer chain in terms of three bands that host three different species of fermions. While the lowest two bands correspond to spin-$1/2$ fermions, the fermions in the highest band are of spin-$3/2$. Because the bands are for different species of fermions, the particle-hole excitation channel across the bands is closed. However, fractionalized excitations as spin-$1/2$ and spin-$3/2$ fermions in pairs open a cooperon channel of excitations in Raman scattering. The background spectral intensity profile obtained by Raman scattering measurements in Na$_2$Cu$_3$Ge$_4$O$_{12}$ having a trimer chain consisting of spin-$1/2$ Cu ions, has comprehensively been shown to be consistent with these excitations.

Inhomogeneous phase stiffness in two-dimensional $s$-wave disordered superconductors

We investigate the effect of white-noise disorder on the local phase stiffness and thermodynamic properties of a two-dimensional $s$-wave superconductor. Starting from a local attractive model and using path-integral formalism, we derive an effective action by decoupling the superconducting order parameter into amplitude and phase components in a gauge-invariant manner. Perturbative techniques are applied to the phase fluctuation sector to derive an effective phase-only XY model for disordered superconducting systems. Solving the saddle-point Green's function using Bogoliubov-de Gennes theory, we calculate the distributions of nearest-neighbor couplings for various disorder strengths. A single-peak distribution is observed for low disorder strength, which becomes bimodal with one peak at negative couplings as the disorder strength increases. The local phase stiffness remains randomly distributed throughout the lattice and shows no correlation with pairing amplitudes. The temperature dependence of the superfluid stiffness ($J_s$) is studied using Monte Carlo simulations. At strong disorder and low temperatures, $J_s$ increases with increasing temperature, exhibiting anomalous behavior that may indicate the onset of a glassy transition. Additionally, calculations of the Edwards-Anderson order parameter in this disorder regime suggest the emergence of a $phase$-$glass$ state at very low temperatures.

Theory of Polar Skyrmions in Layered Structure of Ferroelectric Perovskites

Discovery of polar skyrmions on the (PbTiO$_3$)$_n$/(SrTiO$_3$)$_n$ superlattice in the absence of any known interaction, which can orient electric polarizations at a point with respect to its neighboring points, is enigmatic. We here show that the coupling of the electric polarization and strain at each layer is responsible for orienting polarizations. We formulate coupled Euler equations for electric polarization and elastic displacement vectors, and solve to find skyrmion solution for a range of electric fields with unique topological number in each layer. The types of skyrmions vary from Neel to Bloch depending on the position of the layers in the superlattice, as observed in the experiments.

Enigmatic 2+6/13 Filling Factor: A Prototype Intermittent Topological State

Observation of filling factor 6/13 is one of the surprising fractional quantum Hall states in the second Landau level because, in contrast to the standard wisdom, the fractions ($ν< 1/2$) with lower numerators, namely 4 and 5, have not yet been observed. We find that a state indeed forms at $ν=6/13$ as an intermittent topological state between two prominent states at $ν=1/2$ and $ν= 2/5$ with lower numerators. Also, we predict that a state forms at $ν=5/13$ as an intermittent to $ν= 2/5$ and $ν=3/8$. Our proposed wave functions for $ν=6/13$ and $5/13$ have excellent overlaps with the corresponding exact ground state wave functions. The Chern-Simons coupling matrices deduced from the form of these wave functions are analyzed to predict the topological properties, which may be experimentally verified.

Fractional Quantum Hall States of the $\mathcal{A}$ phase in the Second Landau Level

A proposal of the existence of an {\em Anomalous} phase ($\mathcal{A}$ phase) [https://journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevLett.131.056202 Das et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 131, 056202 (2023)] at the experimental range of moderate Landau-level-mixing strength has recently been made for $5/2$ state. We here report that the gapped $\mathcal{A}$ phase is generic to the sequence of spin-polarized fractional quantum Hall states with filling fractions $ν= n/(nm-1)$ and $ν= 1-n/(nm-1)$, $(n \geqslant 1,\,m\geqslant 3)$, that exhausts almost all the observed states and also predicts some states in the second Landau level for GaAs systems. Our proposed trial wavefunctions for all these states have remarkably high overlaps with the corresponding exact ground states and can support non-Abelian quasiparticle excitations with charge $e/[2(nm-1)]$. By analyzing edge modes, we predict experimentally verifiable thermal Hall conductance $2.5(π^2 k_B^2T/3h)$ for all the states in these sequences.

An Anomalous Reentrant 5/2 Quantum Hall Phase at Moderate Landau-Level-Mixing Strength

A successful probing of neutral Majorana mode in recent thermal Hall conductivity measurements opines in favor of the particle-hole symmetric Pfaffian (PH-Pf) topological order, contrasting the theoretical predictions of Pfaffian or anti-Pfaffian phases. Here we report a reentrant anomalous quantized phase which is found to be gapped in the thermodynamic limit, distinct from the conventional Pfaffian, anti-Pfaffian, or PH-Pf phases, at an intermediate strength of Landau level mixing. Our proposed wave function consistent with the PH-Pf shift in spherical geometry rightly captures the topological order of this phase, as its overlap with the exact ground state is very high and it reproduces low-lying entanglement spectra. A unique topological order, irrespective of the flux shifts, found for this phase possibly corroborates the experimentally found topological order.

Superfluid Density in Conventional Superconductors: From Clean to Strongly Disordered

The highly convergent form of superfluid density in disordered conventional superconductors available in the literature and independently obtained by us following the approach of an earlier paper [Phys. Rev. B $\bm{102}$, 024514 (2020)] has been reformulated to separate out the generally used so-called `dirty-limit' term and an additional term. We use this new expression for making an extensive comparison with previously published experimental data and show that the former, generally used, term is {\em not} sufficient for analyzing these results. We point out that consequently, there is a large regime (disordered superconductors with moderate to no disorder) where theoretical predictions need to be confronted with experiment.

From the Gaffnian critical point to the incompressible 2/5 quantum Hall state

Despite the high overlap with the exact Coulomb ground state, the so-called Gaffnian state fails to describe the incompressibility at the 2/5 quantum Hall filling factor and consequently it was conjectured to be a quantum critical state. To achieve a gapped state starting from the Gaffnian wavefunction, which we interpret as the inter-flavor pairing of the composite fermions, we propose a minimally `modified Gaffnian' wavefunction keeping the pairing intact. We find that a suitable hybridization of these two wavefunctions is an excellent description of the 2/5 quantum Hall state. It has a very high overlap with the exact Coulomb state and their entanglement spectra match up to reasonably higher levels. Interestingly, this hybridized wavefunction being a representative of a paired state suggests an exotic possibility of non-Abelian quasiparticle excitations at 2/5 filling.

Length-scale independent skyrmion and meron Hall angles

Motivated by the recent observation [Zeissler et al, Nature Comm. 11, 428 (2020)] of enigmatic radius-independent skyrmion Hall angle in chiral magnets, we derive skyrmion Hall angle based on the recent solution of skyrmions characterized by the sole length scale determined with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction strength and applied magnetic field. We find that the skyrmion Hall angle is independent of input current density and the length-scale which determines the radius of a skyrmion. This is corroborated with the single length-scale dependent skyrmion profile which is the solution of the Euler equation of polar angle representing magnetization. Although the magnitude of Hall angle may change with the change of profile (shape) of the skyrmion, it remains unchanged for a particular profile. With the application of tunable current along mutually perpendicular directions, this property enables us to propose an experimental setup by which the transverse motion of a skyrmion can be restricted so that the skyrmion can only traverse longitudinally. We further find the length-scale and input-current density independent Hall angles for merons where their transverse motion will be opposite depending on whether the spin at their centers are up or down, in agreement with an experiment.

Skyrmions at Vanishingly Small Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction or Zero Magnetic Field

By introducing biquadratic together with usual bilinear ferromagnetic nearest neighbor exchange interaction in a square lattice, we find that the energy of the spin-wave mode is minimized at a finite wavevector for a vanishingly small Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), supporting a ground state with spin-spiral structure whose pitch length is unusually short as found in some of the experiments. Apart from reproducing the magnetic structures that can be obtained in a canonical model with nearest neighbor exchange interaction only, a numerical simulation of this model with further introduction of magnetic anisotropy and magnetic field predicts many other magnetic structures some of which are already observed in the experiments. Amongst many observed structures, nanoscale skyrmion even at vanishingly small DMI is found for the first time in a model. The model provides the nanoscale skyrmions of unit topological charge at zero magnetic field as well. We obtain phase diagrams for all the magnetic structures predicted in the model.

Unconventional Filling Factor 4/11: A Closed-Form Ground State Wave Function

The ground state at 4/11 filling factor is very well understood [Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 016801 (2014)] in terms of the 1/3 filled second effective Landau level of the composite fermions whose correlations resemble with that of electrons in the ground state of two-body Haldane pseudo-potential of relative angular momentum 3, $V_3$. We here propose a closed-form ground state wave function for $V_3$ at 1/3 filling factor. We successfully compare it with the exact wave function for the systems with a few electrons, by calculating their mutual overlap, pair-correlation function, and entanglement spectra. By numerical exact diagonalization for a few electron systems, we find a window of nonzero $V_3$ is essential together with $V_1$ for being 4/11 state incompressible. The constructed wave function for 4/11 state using this proposed wave function has satisfactorily high overlap with the previously studied composite-fermion-diagonalized ground state wave function.

Microscopic free energy functional of superconductive amplitude and phase: Superfluid density in disordered superconductors

Recent experiments on disordered superconductors find that the superfluid density $n_s(T)$ decreases dramatically and characteristically with disorder, differently from what is expected for a mean order parameter field or BCS, amplitude only, picture for the superconductor. We describe here a new microscopic free energy functional which explicitly describes its dependence on both the amplitude and phase of superconducting order, in a gauge invariant manner. We use this here in an approximation of noninteracting phase fluctuations (Gaussian or harmonic approximation) to obtain $n_s(T)$ in the presence of (static) disorder. We compare our results successfully with experiment.

Theory of skyrmion, meron, anti-skyrmion and anti-meron in chiral magnets

We find closed-form solution of the Euler equation for a chiral magnet in terms of a skyrmion or a meron depending on the relative strengths of magnetic anisotropy and magnetic field. We show that the relevant length scales for these solutions primarily depend on the strengths of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction through its ratios, respectively, with magnetic field and magnetic anisotropy. We thus unambiguously determine the parameter dependencies on the radius of the topological structures particularly of the skyrmions, showing an excellent agreement with experiments and first-principle studies. An anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction suitable for thin films made with $C_{nv}$ symmetric materials is found to stabilize anti-skyrmion and anti-meron, which are prototypical for $D_{2d}$ symmetric systems, depending on the degree of anisotropy. Based on these solutions, we obtain phase diagram by comparing the energies of various collinear and non-collinear competing phases.
