Finite-range pairing in nuclear density functional theory

Pairing correlations are ubiquitous in low-energy states of atomic nuclei. To incorporate them within nuclear density functional theory, often used for global computations of nuclear properties, pairing functionals that generate nucleonic pair densities and pairing fields are introduced. Many pairing functionals currently used can be traced back to zero-range nucleon-nucleon interactions. Unfortunately, such functionals are plagued by deficiencies that become apparent in large model spaces that contain unbound single-particle (continuum) states. In particular, the underlying computational schemes diverge as the single-particle space increases, and the results depend on how marginally occupied states are incorporated. These problems become more pronounced for pairing functionals that contain gradient-density dependence, such as in the Fayans functional. To remedy this, finite-range pairing functionals are introduced. In this study, this is done by folding the pair density with Gaussians. We show that a folding radius of about 1\,fm offers the best compromise between quality and stability, and substantially reduces the pathological behavior in different numerical applications.

The nucleardatapy toolkit for simple access to experimental nuclear data, astrophysical observations, and theoretical predictions

Systematic comparisons across theoretical predictions for the properties of dense matter, nuclear physics data, and astrophysical observations (also called meta-analyses) are performed. Existing predictions for symmetric nuclear and neutron matter properties are considered, and they are shown in this paper as an illustration of the present knowledge. Asymmetric matter is constructed assuming the isospin asymmetry quadratic approximation. It is employed to predict the pressure at twice saturation energy-density based only on nuclear-physics constraints, and we find it compatible with the one from the gravitational-wave community. To make our meta-analysis transparent, updated in the future, and to publicly share our results, the Python toolkit \texttt{nucleardatapy} is described and released here. Hence, this paper accompanies \texttt{nucleardatapy}, which simplifies access to nuclear-physics data, including theoretical calculations, experimental measurements, and astrophysical observations. This Python toolkit is designed to easily provide data for: i) predictions for uniform matter (from microscopic or phenomenological approaches); ii) correlation among nuclear properties induced by experimental and theoretical constraints; iii) measurements for finite nuclei (nuclear chart, charge radii, neutron skins or nuclear incompressibilities, etc.) and hypernuclei (single particle energies); and iv) astrophysical observations. This toolkit provides data in a unified format for easy comparison and provides new meta-analysis tools. It will be continuously developed, and we expect contributions from the community in our endeavor.

The mass of $^{101}$Sn and Bayesian extrapolations to the proton drip line

The favorable energy configurations of nuclei at magic numbers of ${N}$ neutrons and ${Z}$ protons are fundamental for understanding the evolution of nuclear structure. The ${Z=50}$ (tin) isotopic chain is a frontier for such studies, with particular interest at and around the doubly-magic \textsuperscript{100}Sn isotope, for which the mass is a topic of debate. Precise mass values for neutron-deficient isotopes provide necessary anchor points for mass models to test extrapolations near the proton drip line, where experimental studies remain out of reach. In this work, we report the first Penning trap mass measurement of \textsuperscript{101}Sn. The determined mass excess of $-59\,889.89(96)$~keV for \textsuperscript{101}Sn represents a factor of 300 improvement over the current precision and indicates that \textsuperscript{101}Sn is less bound than previously thought. Mass predictions from a recently developed Bayesian model combination (BMC) framework employing statistical machine learning and nuclear masses computed within seven global models based on nuclear Density Functional Theory (DFT) agree within 1$σ$ with experimental masses from the $48 \le Z \le 52$ isotopic chains. The framework's resilience to new mass data gave confidence in the extrapolation of tin masses down to $N=46$. Our calculations suggest that \textsuperscript{96}Sn is a two-proton drip line nucleus and predict a mass excess of $-58\,090(800)$~keV for $^{100}$Sn, showing a preference within 1$σ$ for the mass of \textsuperscript{100}Sn derived from the $β$-delayed $Q$-value measured at GSI.

Star Log-extended eMulation: a method for efficient computation of the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations

We emulate the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equations, including tidal deformability, for neutron stars using a new method based upon the Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD). This method, which we call Star Log-extended eMulation (SLM), utilizes the underlying logarithmic behavior of the differential equations to enable accurate emulation of the nonlinear system. We show predictions for well-known equations of state (EOSs) with fixed parameters using the SLM, accurately recreating high-fidelity results while achieving a computational speed-up of $\approx 2.4 \times 10^4$. We test our parametric SLM method for a two-parameter quarkyonic EOS against high-fidelity RK4 TOV calculations and find a computational speedup of $\approx 7.0 \times 10^4$. Hence, SLM is an efficient emulator for the numerous TOV evaluations required by multi-messenger astrophysical frameworks that infer constraints on the EOS. The ability of the SLM algorithm to learn a mapping between parameters of the EOS and subsequent neutron star properties also opens up potential extensions for assisting in computationally prohibitive uncertainty quantification (UQ) for any type of EOS. The source code for the methods employed in this work is openly available in a public GitHub repository for community modification and use.

Crust Cooling Models are Insensitive to the Crust-Core Transition Pressure for Realistic Equations of State

Neutron stars cooling after sustained accretion outbursts provide unique information about the neutron star crust and underlying dense matter. Comparisons between astronomical observations of these cooling transients and model calculations of neutron star crust cooling have frequently been used to constrain neutron star properties such as the mass, radius, crust composition, and presence of nuclear pasta. These calculations often use a fixed pressure at which the crust-core transition happens, though this quantity depends on the dense matter equation of state. We demonstrate that varying the crust-core transition pressure in a manner consistent with adopting various equations of state results in modest changes to the crust cooling light curve. This validates the approach adopted in most crust cooling studies to date, where the neutron star mass and radius are varied while leaving the crust-core transition pressure constant.

Thermal Effects in Dense Matter Beyond Mean Field Theory

The formalism of next-to-leading order Fermi Liquid Theory is employed to calculate the thermal properties of symmetric nuclear and pure neutron matter in a relativistic many-body theory beyond the mean field level which includes two-loop effects. For all thermal variables, the semi-analytical next-to-leading order corrections reproduce results of the exact numerical calculations for entropies per baryon up to 2. This corresponds to excellent agreement down to sub-nuclear densities for temperatures up to $20$ MeV. In addition to providing physical insights, a rapid evaluation of the equation of state in the homogeneous phase of hot and dense matter is achieved through the use of the zero-temperature Landau effective mass function and its derivatives.
